Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. This carefully crafted story inspires us to understand the values of friendship, honesty, and compassion. It is a series of stories within a story, a mystery, a tale of friendship, and the importance of family ties and understanding. My daughter and I read this together over 5 years ago, when she was 9 years old and I still remember the number of discussions which came from reading this story together.

Steeped in science, history, and fact this work will engage readers who appreciate excellent historical fiction and the study of human motivation. The transition between 17th century events and more present times pulls the reader through the events which fueled the Salem witch trials and associates the realm of science to belief.

Creative, artful, and rich in style and construction, Ms. Russell takes you on a journey through the lives and imaginations of her characters.[t] Each story is a collage of characters, their thoughts and emotions portrayed with colorful dialogue, description, and a hint of mysticism.[/t] It is easy to become totally absorbed in each story, and to feel as though you are right there between the lines.
