Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I just loved the wordplay in this delightful YA novel. Even more appealing to me is the way it skewers (and puts a fresh face on) the usual sexist tropes found in YA girl-hero books. It's one of those books I found really hard to finish, because I didn't want it to end.

Around My French Table
by

I'm part of a group of bloggers making all the recipes in this book, so I've already made nearly a dozen of them, and every one came out exactly as the book said. I find that truly remarkable. The recipes are easy to follow, use easy-to-find ingredients, and make my family happy, so what could be better? Greenspan's writing is so warm and inviting, to match the food.

I already love this cookbook. It's large and beautiful, and the text and photos are both gorgeous. So far, I've only made one of the recipes -- the gougeres, or cheese puffs -- but it was dead easy and delicious, so I'm happy to be participating in a blog event where we'll cook through the whole book together (frenchfridayswithdorie.com; they didn't pay me to say that). Yum.

War For The Oaks

This is a delightful book. It's fantasy for people who aren't necessarily fantasy fans. That is, the characters are fairies and the like, but she doesn't take pages and pages just to describe in great detail which wings the left phalanx of fairies sports, and which ancient celtic battle gave them their name and their broad, blue swords, and on and on. It's just a good story with a modern-day protagonist entering a world she didn't know existed. I really liked it a lot.

Mcdougall Program Healthy Heart
by

I've been following the program for five days, and it's very easy, and my fatigue and joint pain and heart symptoms have almost disappeared. I especially notice my increased energy and diminished need for sleep. I'm looking at this as an experiment -- follow the program 100% for a while and see what it does to my numbers. I'll report back when I get my next blood tests. So far, the recipes I've tried have been great, and the folks at the discussion board at drmcdougall.com have been very helpful, too.

Letter to a Christian Nation
by
Sam Harris
Serene
, August 14, 2007
As an atheist, I'm not the ostensible audience for this book, but I found myself in a situation where I felt like I was the choir being preached to. That is to say, I agree with most of Harris's ideas, so it's unfortunate that I found so much of his logic shaky, and his writing disjointed. Still, the book raises some important points, draws attention to some really urgent issues of national (US) policy, and is small enough to be read in one sitting. I liked it. I wanted to love it.

Only Begotten Daughter
by
James Morrow
Serene
, August 06, 2007
I'm not a huge reader of science fiction, and I have never read Morrow before, but I really did enjoy this book. It was both deeper and funnier than I expected. It was also more violent than the light tone at the beginning would suggest. You don't have to have a feeling about religion one way or the other to enjoy this book, but if you've ever been an evangelical Christian, I think there are some special jabs in there for you.

Interpreter of Maladies
by
Jhumpa Lahiri
Serene
, August 06, 2007
This is an easy read, but a complex one, as well. I read it on the plane from Tokyo to San Francisco, and it made me feel like a citizen of the world. A friend in India tells me that Lahiri's books are considered to be the romanticization of India that one would expect from an American of Indian descent. "Kind of like cowboy movies," he said, and I knew instantly what he meant. Still, this is a darn good cowboy movie, if you ask me.

In the Palm of Your Hand The Poets Portable Workshop
by
Kowit, Steve
Serene
, August 06, 2007
This is the best writing manual I've ever read, and I've read a ton of them. I had the good fortune to have the author as a poetry instructor in college, but the book is the reason I got published -- the first three exercises I did in the book were my first three published poems. If you ever wanted to write a poem that's not only evocative and lyrical, but in clear English and not pretentious, this is the book for you.
