Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Little Blue Truck

This board book is a hit with my 2-year-old and has been since he was several months old. He loves the bright, colorful illustrations, the rollicking, song-like text, and the camaraderie between Little Blue and the animals that he meets as he travels across the countryside and helps a misguided dump truck in a sticky situation. I like the message of teamwork and respect, as well as the text that lends itself to singing and sound effects. I highly recommend this for all smaller children!

Girl Who Loved Wild Horses

This is one of the best children's books that I've come across. The story of a young Indian girl who tends her tribe's band of horses is eloquent and touching, and the illustrations are strikingly beautiful. I read it with my 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son regularly, and the story prompts discussions about families, love, and how legends are created. This is a treasured part of our book collection.

Dougal The Garbage Dump Bear
by

Dougal is a shy little bear whose luck turns from terrible to wonderful. He is tossed out in the garbage because he is not as new and fancy as some other stuffed animals, but he then finds a whole new world and a wonderful collection of "new" friends who similarly have a lot to offer other than fancy good looks. This is one of our family's absolute favorite children's books!

I read this book after using the California Newsreel/Independent Lens DVD by the same name in several of my college courses. The book is insightful and very interesting. My only complaint is that I wish it was even more in depth!

Eating Animals
by
Jonathan Safran Foer

I read this book primarily because I have enjoyed several other books by this author. I was intrigued by the subject matter as well, though. I am a struggling vegetarian, meaning that I try to be one but falter on an infrequent basis. This book has helped me reconsider my choices, as well as how I rationalize what, and how, I eat. Foer does not demand that the reader give up eating animals, but he does demand that you take a closer look at how you approach the subject on an intellectual and moral level.

One of my most-used cookbooks, proven by its dog-eared pages and well-worn cover. This book is down-to-earth and full of great, easy recipes. I particularly like the index in the back...I use it when I have a handful of random ingredients in the kitchen and no idea how to use them!

A wonderfully touching look into the life of the author and her Newfoundlands. From dog shows and trials to accommodating for a litter of puppies, the reader is exposed to life with some of the most intriguing dogs in the world. A quick, but very engaging read!
