Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Global Achievement Gap
by
Tony Wagner

Wagner is known for pushing for a change in how we educate our youth. He strongly supports using project-based learning, encouraging creativity, and fostering good citizens. He points out how current education methods such as straight lecturing and rote memorization is very outdated--well, in some instances it is okay, but as the main vehicle of education...not at all. This is a fairly easy read and hammers home the same 5 or so points throughout the book. I recommend it for all teachers K-12 and college.

Unbroken A World War II Story of Survival Resilience & Redemption
by
Laura Hillenbrand

, August 04, 2012
Unbelievable story of survival and courage of Louis Zamperini. Hillenbrand's writing is straightforward and clear, perhaps because she wanted Zamperini's story to be the primary focus. So, if you want spectacular writing, this is not for you, but if you want a quick read of an amazing true story, then choose this.
