God Made It All
by
Ruthie Godfrey
mizroady
, February 28, 2022
I consulted to of my “professional” listeners before doing this review: my grandsons ages 4 years and 2 years. I know what I liked about the book but more important what did they think! Children love learning about opposites. Ms. Godfrey’s book made it fun and also puts God front and center, the One who created opposites! I was impressed with the beautiful, colorful illustrations that fill every inch of every page. Each opposite is composed of 2 pages of artwork. I liked that each was only 1 sentence; this keeps the “little’s” attention and doesn’t overwhelm them. Yet our reading was not fast as they took much time scanning the pictures and pointing out details. If I am not mistaken I counted 21 different examples of opposites. I was pleased with this as it introduced the boys to way more than you would usually think of! I asked them which their favorite was and to my surprise it was the one about food, “sweet and sour, messy and neat”. This will definitely be reread, again, again and again. . . Once they like a book it must be read several times a day for quite a while. Yes the book teaches opposites but first and foremost it teaches these precious children that God is the Creator of ALL THINGS.

The Girl Who Could Breathe Under Water
by
Erin Bartels
mizroady
, January 25, 2022
While I applaud Ms. Bartel’s talent as a writer, I cannot give this book the review I was hoping. It was a bit of a surprise. The situations portrayed in the book were not what would be expected from a Christian publisher. I hate giving bad reviews but it was not something I feel comfortable reading or encouraging others to. There is frequent alcohol use, drunkenness, and descriptions of sexual molestation. The latter, due to the very nature of it, while not as explicit as it could have been, cannot be made clean. The main character even has a man she has never met before stay in her cabin with her. He is there to help her translate her book into another language. That is innocent enough, and nothing happens between them, but not in keeping with godly conduct. There are several references and descriptions of the woman’s scantily clad attire, and her molester looking her over. This made me uncomfortable just reading it. In fact there is not Christian aspect or even God mentioned in the story. I would not have agreed to review this book had there been any indication of these things. This book was definitely not for me. I received this book from Revell publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own.

Eat God's Food: A Kid's Guide to Healthy Eating
by
Susan U. Neal
mizroady
, August 26, 2021
I was very impressed with this book and I wish it was around when my girls were young. I am happy it is here for my grandsons though! Healthy eating is very important, but most people today still do not choose it. Our bodies are the temple of God and as Christians caring for them is very important. Children are bombarded with all the unhealthy foods by friends, family, and advertisements. This book not only teaches them healthy eating in a fun way but also biblical perspective. Each section asks the question, “Why did God give you. . .” and names a particular food group. It covers fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, seed, meat and seafood and water (not recipe on the last one of course!) The pages are colorfully illustrated to spark young one’s interest. Included are fun activities to aid in learning and a healthy recipe! Children will learn and enjoy doing it. The book covers even more important information kids need to not only make healthy eating choices but why. A great book to encourage children to start eating right at an early age! I received this book as a gift from the author. The opinions stated are my own.

These Nameless Things
by
Shawn Smucker
mizroady
, July 22, 2020
This is my second book of Shawn Smucker’s to read. I had trouble getting into the book. While the writer was wonderfully descriptive in not only visual terms but also the emotions of the characters I found the story very confusing. I would connect with parts this all of sudden be confused about what was going on. The characters didn’t seem to have much of a personal history other than an escape from somewhere on the other side of the mountain. I wanted to know more about them. It was difficult to follow a storyline. There kept being more questions, but no answers. I left me with a very unfinished feeling about the story. Also with this being from a Christian publisher I thought there would be a Christian theme running through it. There is no mention of scripture or God in the book. I loved the cover, it drew me in to read the book. I think a big part of the problem is that the dystopian genre is not for me. I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own.

Made to Move Mountains: How God Uses Our Dreams and Disasters to Accomplish the Impossible
by
Kristen Welch
mizroady
, May 08, 2020
Whatever mountains loom ahead of us in our spiritual walk, whether a dream or a problem, they usually seem enormous and impossible to overcome. I always try to remind myself that God loves impossible situations to show Himself strong. Ms. Welch tells about the mountains she has climbed in her life. I liked that she was open about her experiences, sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly. Transparency like that helps me get more out of the book. I can relate to being imperfect and do not feel I am somehow don’t measure up. Like many of us, her life had a mountain range to overcome and by that I mean they were in different areas of her life. As the founder of an organization providing homes for pregnant teens her challenges seemed hopeless. She did not falter but obediently looked to God no matter what fears or obstacles. This rang true for each mountain that arose in her path. I liked that she used her own experiences to illustrate the different kinds of mountains we might encounter. Included are scripture references to direct and encourage the reader. I like the scriptures, and questions at the end of each chapter to help me apply the information to my personal situations. I also appreciated the page to journal my thoughts. It made the book even more personal to me. I received this book from Baker Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I stated are my own.

Basic Bible Atlas A Fascinating Guide to the Land of the Bible
by
John A Beck
mizroady
, March 31, 2020
What a fantastic Bible reference book for study and just reading! The book isn’t big or long, but what it packs into 171 pages is incredible. I liked the way the book was arranged. I know the Bible is true and real without a doubt, but the author brought it to life for me. The Bible history, eye-catching, clear map illustrations and the wonderful word descriptions that went with them gave me a greater picture of the events I have read about so many times. I know from now on when I read my Bible what I have learned will come to mind and add to my time in the Word. Mr. Beck covered from Genesis to Revelations! Some thing that impressed me was the many scriptural references on every page. The scripture index and place names index at the back of the book make it simple to look up specific books, scriptures, locations you might be studying. A treasure to have! I know I will be using it often. I received this book from Baker Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I stated are my own.

Living Lies
by
Natalie Walters
mizroady
, June 16, 2019
Natalie Walters hit a home run with her first book! The characters and the plot were amazing, but the author skillfully included serious issues in the forefront of society today: PTSD, depression and anxiety. The story immediately grabbed my attention from the first paragraph and didn’t let go. I was hooked into the old readers’ syndrome, “I am just going to read one more chapter to see what happens”. It is late at night and a young woman (Lane) is standing near the edge of bridge on the verge of jumping to her death. The town’s new deputy (Charlie) happens by and finds her. She attempts to explain she is just taking pictures but Charlie can see through the facade. Ashamed and frightened she bolts into the woods but in the darkness she trips over something and falls. That something was a dead body! Very quickly a troubled war veteran with PTSD is suspected and the small town wants justice! Lane knows in her heart he is innocent and courageously takes a stand for him. Lane is a widow and mother who had moved back to her hometown and start a new life leaving her guilt, grief and secrets behind. Charlie, a war veteran has moved there to work with his uncle, the sheriff. Both are sure they want no part of romance or marriage but God has other plans. Lane suffers from severe depression and anxiety. Due her family’s attitude toward her struggle, lack of support and understanding she sees herself as broken and undeserving of love. Charlie also faces family disapproval for leaving a career in the military. The story moves so smoothly as clues to the murderer’s identity is sought. The author does a beautiful job of showing the minds and hearts of those with mental illness. I feel it gives the reader a greater understanding of how those afflicted suffer, needing our compassion and understanding, not disapproval. They are often hindered in forgiving and accepting themselves by the harsh judgement of others. Ms. Walters shows throughout the book that the true source of overcoming and moving on is trust in God. I cannot wait to read the next book! I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own.

Joyful Surrender: 7 Disciplines for the Believer's Life
by
Elisabeth Elliot
mizroady
, April 19, 2019
To read one of Elisabeth Elliot’s books is a spiritual experience. Her writings are not just from the heart but come from a much deeper place: her lifelong relationship with the Lord and what He has taught her. She doesn’t just write about it she has lived it. Going back to the tribe that killed your husband to lead them to Christ more than qualifies her to write about discipline! I love her statement at the very first of the book: “Discipline is the believer’s answer to God’s call.” This is a very timely subject in our world today. Discipline is gradually fading in all areas of life and being replaced with a willy-nilly fleshly attitude of doing whatever one desires. If the flesh leads and is not brought under submission, we cannot follow or serve Christ. Scripture tells us of this spiritual war. Ms. Elliot shows the reader through her skillful writing, personal experiences and scriptures, the 7 areas a Christian must work toward discipline to fulfill their calling in Christ. She includes not only the how but the why. The areas are: body, mind, place, time, possessions, work and feelings. I found the subjects of possessions and feelings to be ones maybe people don’t look at in this light. This is a book you will want to read more than once and study. I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

When Life Doesn't Match Your Dreams: Hope for Today from 12 Women of the Bible
by
Jill Eileen Smith
mizroady
, April 05, 2019
Whether we admit it or not, we have all have an unconscious “script” written in our heads about how our lives will progress. This is more than dreams of setting goals; it is also a dream because we cannot know all the details of our future. When life takes a different course, we are shocked, hurt, and disheartened even if it is due to our own bad choices. Ms. Smith looks at 12 different women of the Old Testament whose lives did not follow their expectations and plans. She helps us see that these ladies weren’t just Bible characters but real flesh and blood women just like us. They had the same emotions and feelings as any woman. Each faced disappointments, difficulties and made mistakes just as we do. God wrote about them that we might learn from their examples good or bad. I was delighted that the author not only wrote about well-known women from the Scriptures but several you wouldn’t have thought of studying in this way; Adah (Noah’s wife), Melah (Lot’s wife) and Aneksi (Potiphar’s wife). All very interesting! If God included them in His Word, they are important too! The author does an amazing job of bringing each of these women to life. I was able to put myself in their place and time, seeing events from their perspective. The next part of the chapter is entitled “In Our World”. Here I was able to realize how what happened to a woman who lived 1000’s of years ago can be applied to my life today. I really liked this part. It helped me see that though time and customs may be different today, who we are as human beings never changes. “Imagine with me” returns to that particular woman seeing through her eyes the impact of her experience on the rest of her life. I found Ms. Smiths in sights on the lessons that can be learned very interesting. She went past the obvious and brought out things I would not have thought of. The questions at the end of the chapters really aided me in looking deeper at myself, thus gaining even more from the study. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Breaking the Power of Negative Words: How Positive Words Can Heal
by
Mary C. Busha
mizroady
, April 04, 2019
Words seem like such small things in passing. They can be quickly spoken, thought or read, but they hold a great deal of power in many areas. Influence to hurt, damage, encourage, or heal sometimes for a lifetime. We all remember words that have wounded us in the past. I know I do. Cruel thoughtless ones, sometimes spoken on purpose that 60 years later still sting at their remembrance. Just as bad if not worse are those I have thought toward myself, oftentimes on a regular basis. I believe such have had even a greater impact on shaping my view of me as a person. I cringe to think the effect my unkind words may have had on others. With negativity being such a scourge in today’s society I found this book to be a fantastic study! Through personal illustrations and lots of scripture (a big plus to me!) the author helps the reader take an in-depth, even microscopic look at many aspects of negative words. She doesn’t just leave us hanging there, but in great detail gives us the knowledge and tools to change not only ourselves but overcoming that which is spoken by others. Ms. Busha points out that negative communication in any form is not what God intends. Scripture has a lot to say about the power of the tongue. At the end of each chapter there are study questions for deeper self-examination. These are great! This is a book you will want to read more than once to study. It is a wealth of wisdom and knowledge. I believe everyone can benefit from it and make lasting changes. I received this book from Revell Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Courting Mr. Emerson
by
Melody Carlson
mizroady
, March 25, 2019
I have said it before and I will say it again, Melody Carlson is one of my favorite authors! Any book I see with her name on it I HAVE to read! This book was a fun read and a bit different as the main characters are in their 50’s. George Emerson has reached his retirement after 30 years as a high school language arts teacher. He is stuck in an 80’s time warp, maybe even further than that! He has eschewed any type of technology despite his intelligence and education. This guy puts the “N” in nerd. Uncomfortable in his own skin, especially in social interactions, he is a loner and confirmed bachelor. Willow West is the totally opposite end of the spectrum! She was raised in by hippies and her wild youth labeled her with name Wild West Willow. You get the idea! She is now a Christian and her youthful exuberance is now channeled as a buoyant, impromptu, woman who totally enjoys life! These two oil and water no make that gas and fire personalities, meet when Willow asks Mr. Emerson for a referral letter for her grandson’s college application. They learn they both attended high school together. She finds herself interested in him but she is not sure exactly how. She describes him as “Mr. Bean”. George is not sure how he will spend his new freedom retired. He envisions his rigid, OCD life continuing to be a cocoon of comfort. Willow on the other hand sees him needing to try new experiences and add excitement to his life. Though I do not think consciously, she makes it a project to help him do just that. This is where the rushing wind meets a brick wall. George sees her as fascinating. Because of the lack of the courage to say “no” he continually finds himself in circumstances and experiences he would have never chosen! After he has survived each one George finds he actually enjoyed himself but vows never to give in again! Both grow more attracted to each other but their disparities usually end up in misunderstandings and hurt feelings, only to be followed by an apology. Ms. Carlson does a beautiful job of helping the reader clearly see the George and Willows extremely different viewpoints. The characters were fun, quirky and real! I thought it was beautiful that Willow’s interest in George was one of compassion and concern. As the story unfolds her concern is for his soul as he professes to be an atheist. He was a beautiful example not to give up on an unbeliever no matter how impossible salvation may seem. You will find yourself laughing, crying and feeling joy as you read this book. Thank you Ms. Carlson for another amazing book! I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I stated are my own.

Almost Home
by
Valerie Fraser Luesse
mizroady
, March 25, 2019
I am classifying this as a cozy, warm fuzzy read! The people, the setting, the story filled me with nostalgia. I was transported back to a difficult but simpler time, before technology invaded life. Being a southern girl I totally related to the hospitality, kind spirits and sweetened ice tea!! Add to all this mystery and you have a 5 star read! Dolly and Si live in Alabama in a 100 year old home out in the “boonies”. They have turned it into a boarding house to make ends meet. It is WW2 and people have been wounded by the war in many ways. Families who have lost loved ones, soldiers returning with emotional and physical wounds, those who have lost jobs, homes, and finances. Everyone is hurting in some way. Dolly’s home was the perfect place for the eclectic mix of wounded hearts. They became a family and Dolly and Si like loving parents. Her big southern breakfasts and home cooked meals brought everyone together around the table to share burdens and encourage one another, like in times past. Basking in her love and kindness I was delighted to see each of the characters to heal in their own way and time. Their individual stories were so varied that I found myself immersed in each of their lives. I loved Dolly’s and the elderly neighbor’s homespun wisdom! I have marked the pages and am going to write them down to remember! Dolly’s homey letters to her sister Violet were delightful. It made me feel a bit like I was reading someone else’s mail! (No I don’t do that but I did enjoy it!) One strong thread that ran throughout the book was faith in God and waiting upon Him. I was so sad to have this book end. It was as if my visit was over and I had to leave Dolly and her wonderful home. I cannot wait to read more of Ms. Luesse’s books! I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Mending Fences
by
Suzanne Woods Fisher
mizroady
, February 25, 2019
When I see a new book by Ms. Fisher I know it will be good! This one was great! Luke Schrock is an Amish bad boy. He has a loving family, community and strong roots to a simple and good life. He throws it away and finds himself in trouble with the law and in rehab for alcoholism. His Bishop, David and his rehab counselor feel the best way for Luke overcome his problems is return to home to Stoney Ridge and apologize to the people he has wronged. And there is more. He must offer to make amends and ask them how it affected their lives. His list of victims is quite long. This is his last chance and He to “mend fences” and start a new life. Amos and Fern Lapp have offered to bring him into their home, with meals and a place to stay in exchange for work. What a shocker when he finds out his room is in the barn! Izzy has also been taken in by the Lapps a year ago; she gets to stay in the house of course! She lacks and craves all Luke took for granted; a secure home, a loving family and place to belong. She treasures having these blessings and sees how valuable they are. Luke is intrigued by Izzy. She is quite, even secretive and totally unimpressed by his charms that have always turned the girl’s heads. I loved this book. The title is so appropriate. I enjoyed watching Luke grow and change as he realized the damage what he considered “innocent pranks” did to so many. It was extremely interesting to look into the lives of those wronged and how it had changed them. I saw his years of selfishness and his attitude of entitlement fall away as he grows spiritually, truly loving and caring for his people. Izzy is a beautiful soul trapped inside a shell of childhood hurt and resentment. It was painful to see her struggle with trusting even the Lapps and realizing she was loved. I just wanted to hug Amos and Fern. Their challenges and hardships could have easily caused them to abandon Luke and Izzy to focus on their needs but they didn’t. They were so sweet and sincere in their sacrifices to help troubled youth. One of my favorite parts of the books was Luke’s problems with a wily raccoon and Amos’s beloved horse Bob. I was sorry for the book to end, it was that good! It did make me happy to see this is a series another book will be coming! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Miriam Daughter of Finnish Immigrants
by
Diane Dettmann
mizroady
, February 24, 2019
I will say outright I am a fan of Diane Dettmann and her writings! She uses the same words we all do but somehow she puts them together in a way that draws you in both with her fiction or nonfiction books. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would call it a “cozy read”. The story of her grandparents was so personal I felt as if I were a part of the family and reading about my heritage! The Great Depression was a very difficult time for those who lived in that era. Reading about their hardships and deprivation made me feel a bit guilty. Our internet goes out for a few hours or we have a power outage and we feel we are suffering. Forget modern conveniences, they had practically nothing, but it was the everyday norm for them. If you add to that being immigrants from another country, learning our ways and language I feel these people had a greater challenge to survive. Their story is far from discouraging or gloomy though! There is so much humor and joy and that makes it all the brighter with the back drop of those times. I found myself laughing over and over at family incidents shared. This memoir was also an in depth history lesson of day to day living and endurance. I think one of my favorite chapters if I had to choose one was “Mother’s Influence." Her ingenuity and resourcefulness in caring for her family’s needs was amazing, especially when I think of today’s society of “throw it away and buy a new one”. They didn’t feel underprivileged or lacking; whatever they were blessed with brought the family contentment. A delightful read! I received this complimentary copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

I'm Not Afraid
by
Lee Ann Mancini
mizroady
, February 23, 2019
Ms. Mancini has hit the mark on understanding another issue little folks face: Fear. With her colorful and whimsical characters she grabs their attention and helps them relate. Children avoid at all costs letting their friends know they are afraid . . . of anything! Possibly being made fun of and their childhood pride can’t bear the thought. When you think about it they are afraid of admitting they are afraid! Susie shark finds herself in this exact same predicament at the Undersea Amusement Park with her friend Rachel octopus. Rachel wants to ride the new roller coaster ride but Susie is afraid. (Even adults can relate to this!) She makes excuses and tries to distract her friend from the idea with carnival games, less scary rides and binging on fair food. When Susie runs out of tactics her friend confronts her and uses the accusation every child dreads hearing: Scaredy-Cat! Time is up! After making a call to her mom for advice and praying she faces her fear and as with most fears she finds out there was nothing to be afraid of! To add to the fun, there is a Bible symbol to look for throughout the book. One thread runs through all of this series that I love is: Prayer. Some children are taught to pray before meals, but few are taught approach God with all of their needs. This teaches them to pray about everything but shows them that nothing is too small for the Lord to care about. The book reassures little ones that they are the only ones that are fearful, but best of all it shows them how to face it with prayer. I also liked the example of Susie calling her mom for advice. After conquering her roller-coaster fear, she realizes that with the Lord she has nothing to fear. This is a great lesson for children and adults alike! An exceptional book in every way! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. The opinions stated are my own.

What a Bragger!: Adventures of the Sea Kids
by
Lee Ann Mancini
mizroady
, February 10, 2019
I am so impressed with this author and series!! Each book focuses on the compassion we should have for others and our relationship with God. Big ideas for such little readers, but Ms. Mancini shares them in delightful and memorable stories. Adults and children alike have trouble tolerating someone who is always bragging and tooting their own horn. The author helps young ones and adults look at this through God’s eyes. Corey and his friends have had it up to their gills with Melissa blowfish always boasting about her possessions and superiority to the others. This goes on every day. In anger, Corey goes home and shares Melissa’s irritating attitude with his parents. I love that his parents just didn’t agree and join in his gripe session. They gently guided their little boy in showing God’s love and kindness. Upon following her home the next day he finds she is very poor and has nothing. This prompts him to realize his many blessings and thank God for them. With Melissa’s birthday coming up and the teacher planning a surprise party, Corey and his friends pool their money to give her a special gift. What a beautiful example for kids to follow; love and the joy of giving sacrificially! Melissa is overwhelmed by her surprise. She in turn brings thank you notes to all the students. I like this because children don’t write thank you notes anymore; they must be taught to show gratitude. At the end of the book she thanks the Lord for her friends and family. The colorful bright illustrations are attention getters. As with the other books there is a hidden Christian symbol of the fish (cute!) to find. The books are of superior construction and materials and made to last for a long time. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. The opinions stated are my own.

The New You: A Guide to Better Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Wellness
by
Nelson Searcy and Jennifer Dykes Henson
mizroady
, January 28, 2019
For as long as I can remember I have always heard we physical, mental, emotional and spiritual beings. These cannot be separated are divided, it is what makes us complete. The world, even ourselves try to compartmentalize these in dealing with life. It doesn’t work that way. This is a wonderful book that shows you how to address each of these 5 areas for better overall health. The chapters for each section share vital information you need to know to make the needed changes, baby steps on how to achieve your goals, ideas, advice, and personal accounts you can relate to. Some of this I already knew, but needed to hear again. It was made more relevant to me in the light of having help to apply it not just know it and seeing it through the Bible. What I like most about this book is all these changes are made with God and His Word as our focus. Apart from Him we can achieve nothing lasting. All are approached from a biblical and scriptural perspective. The Lord created every part of us and His plan and guidance cannot be ignored if we truly want the best for all areas of our health. This is not a book to rush through but to study and digest. The end of the book entitled “The Small Steps Challenge” lines out a how to implement what you have learned over the course of 4 months. You might be saying, “Four months! That is too long!” It isn’t a race. Taking it gradually will ensure that these habits are ingrained and with a Christian outlook. I am excited to study, learn and change! I received this book free from Baker Books in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Made for the Journey One Missionarys First Year in the Jungles of Ecuador
by
Elisabeth Elliot, Kay Warren
mizroady
, January 27, 2019
I read Ms. Elliot’s first book, “Through the Gates of Splendor” when I was in my mid-twenties. From that very first book, I found a great respect for her and her writings. She does more than just put words on a page. They go deep into you and teach you spiritual lessons, also reaching you on a deep emotional level. I have never read any of her books that I have not walked away with something life-changing. Therefore I was excited to read this book. Her spiritual strength and close relationship with God is shown in following His calling to be a missionary in the jungles of Ecuador as a young woman. I guess it is my own stereotype but I picture those serving on mission fields as older. Even with her maturity venturing out so young, had to make it even more of an eye opening experience. Culture shock does not even begin to describe her experiences there. The Colorados Indians did not request they come there and introduce Christ. It wasn’t like a visiting preacher coming for a revival and hospitality abounding. I don’t think we realize all the sacrifices God’s servants make to do his work is such remote places. She brought it all to life, not just existing there but the gamut of emotions that she felt. In each chapter of the book you are a companion to Elizabeth as you walk beside her experiencing different parts of her work and all she saw and did. My favorite chapter was “Jungle Housekeeping”. All food and drinking water was a laborious task, not just from obtaining it but also to protect themselves against nasty diseases and parasites. And there is more. They had to live in primitive, dirty places forever prey to wild animals and un-American bugs. Travel was precarious at best and they were oddities as white women in the strange land. They faced death and medical emergencies in the most primitive conditions and which they had no training for. To add to all the work and distractions she had to learn the language not only to communicate but to write a Bible for the Colorados. They had no written language! As I put myself in her place I felt exhausted, discouraged and at times frightened. Yet she and her fellow missionaries served with all their hearts. Here Christians in America have conveniences and comforts beyond what they need, yet if problems arise or busy times, their church attendance suffers! Shame on us! This is an incredible read you won’t want to miss. I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

The Bride of Ivy Green

, January 27, 2019
I have been very fortunate to read the 2 previous books in the Ivy Green series. While I have enjoyed them all I think this one is the very best! I must admit I am very sad it is the last. I truly believe you could read each book as a standalone, but I wouldn’t. Each one builds on the other. Having read the previous books made this one so much more enjoyable, knowing Jane, Rachel’s and Mercy’s history in Ivy Hill and as friends. I found previous incidents popping into my head from their past. It gave so much depth to their present interactions and experiences in this book. As with the other novels Ms. Klassen’s attention to detail in setting and experiences made me feel like I was a part of Ivy Hill. Whether it be strolling down the streets or in one of the characters homes, the 1820’s was brought to life. Old romances are renewed and moved forward, and new ones bloom. The story for me focuses on Jane and Mercy and a new character, Victorine. I found the latter a very exciting and interesting young lady. Each of the ladies learns valuable lessons in letting go of the past and embracing a new future. As with any prospect of change, they must work through their fears and doubts. I liked how Jane and Mercy both sought God when they did not know which way to go. I draw pictures in my mind of the characters and mine somewhat changed concerning Mercy. I pictured her as a homely, gaunt, hawk nosed woman. As the story unfolded I realized this was her view of herself as she has not one but two men that find her beautiful! Mercy is also the one that faces the greatest trials and difficulties. She was inspiring with her great faith in God and wanting His will no matter what she thought the outcome might be. A delightful book! Ms. Klassen doesn’t write any but the best! I hope upon hope that these books will be turned into a TV series!! I received this book from Bethany Publisher in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Switch on Your Brain Every Day: 365 Readings for Peak Happiness, Thinking, and Health
by
Caroline Leaf
mizroady
, November 20, 2018
God created our brains to be amazing and powerful. I think this fact is ignored and often neglected in our daily walk. Our minds influence every aspect of our lives; mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally. I believe we often forget this and accept whatever thoughts come into our minds as ... well okay. Scripture is filled with examples and the importance of our thoughts. Science has even verified this, but I love it that Dr. Leaf shows the scriptural truths behind what man has learned about our marvelous brains. This is a full year of devotionals. It can even be a study if you would like. Everyday has a verse and a “brainy tip” as the author calls it. It is scientific information about our brains. These really had an impact along with the scripture on seeing the enormity of this and how it affects me. The author suggests you keep a journal. Each day write down questions you find yourself asking. Next answer them by applying them to your life. Lastly write down your personal thoughts and plans to implement what you have learned. This is far more than just a positive thinking book. It is tool to see and control your thoughts, changing your life and Christian walk. Pardon the pun but this is a “mind altering” book! I do wish the verses had been in the King James Version, but I easily looked them up. I received this book from Baker Books in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

The Lady of Tarpon Springs

I love it when I love learning something new about history. Not just facts and dates but unusual subjects I would not have dreamed of. This novel truly did that! I never thought of the sponge business and the divers or how they risked their lives. I felt as if Ms. Miller took be back in time and dropped me into the early 1900’s in the town of Tarpon Springs. Zanna Krykos and her friend Lucy Penrose are challenging the norms of the day. Zanna is a lawyer and Lucy is the town’s doctor. They are very close friends. When Lucy’s father suddenly dies she finds herself inheriting a sponge diving business he had arranged and she knew nothing of! She wants zero to do with it and asks Zanna to help. There is no way out and on top of that, 50 sponge divers are coming from Greece to be housed and fed! Lucy hands it ALL over to Zanna to manage. Heading the crew is Nicos Sevdalis. He and his men are unaccustomed to women filling any management capacity or giving them directions. Nicos and Zanna are forced to work together. He knows no English and depends on Zanna (Greek also) for translating. Their beginning is pretty rocky, but they become a team. I am absolutely fascinated by the details about diving during that era. Having seen the big heavy diving suits I never thought of how difficult and dangerous it was. Not to mention the medical problems should something go wrong. My knowledge of sponges was zero. It impressed me how incredibly hard the work was for something I am sure people during that time took for granted. The Greek customs, food and family dynamics was wonderful. There were times I felt I was hiding behind chair listening. I would love to try some of the food mentioned. When I pick up books by Judith Miller I know without a doubt I will enjoy them! She checks all my boxes for a good read: Christian, historical, suspense, and a dash of romance! I received this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. It's Okay Not to Be Okay: Moving Forward One Day at a Time
by
Sheila Walsh
mizroady
, November 11, 2018
The title says it all! We go through life fretting because we are not okay in so many areas; like something is badly wrong with us. Instead of turning to the Lord, we try to stuff our perceived failures and limitations under the rug, which only stresses us more. Media, magazines, books everything around us shouts that we can and should reach some sort of perfection. This lie has become so ingrained in us we are blinded and view it as “truth”. Ms. Walsh’s book blasts fib to pieces with the real truth. I found the book to be comforting, inspirational, and helpful. The author’s openness and honesty were a blessing. I could relate to her frustrations, depression and struggles. I wasn’t happy she had them but it was nice to know I wasn’t the only one. Someone else was facing the same thing plus sharing their insights to overcome. Also it was a reality check that even the most successful and spiritual people face the same conflicts. We can’t be perfect in any area because we aren’t; only Christ is, and we live in an imperfect world. No wonder it all seems so impossible! God is always there to help, heal, love, pick us up…everything. Trying to fix ourselves is doing it in our own strength and we don’t have that kind of power, only God does. She reminded my past doesn’t irreparably break me nor does my present defeat me! The 8 steps she shares to move forward so simple and clear! We have to get our focus off of circumstances and self, plus trying to make our world “just” right and focus on the One that can! An outstanding book! Petite Treats Mini Versions of Your Favorite Baked Delights

On cuteness scale from one to ten this book and the recipes get a 12! Cute! Cute! Cute! But it doesn’t stop there. This cookbook is a treasure trove of yummy Lilliputian recipes. Their size makes them even more of a delight. Everyone wants to cut back on eating sweets but face it, the craving is still there. When we go to have a “serving” it is more than we need plus we usually have the tendency to super-size it or go back for seconds. With these mini desserts you can go back for thirds and be okay! They are just enough to satisfy hankering for something luscious. Recipes include muffins, cakes, yeast rolls, yippe pies instead of whoopee pies, cupcakes, brownies, pies, donuts, and some extra special ones in the “Fancy Stuff” chapter that will surprise you. There is also a section with frosting, fillings, toppings and drizzles for your masterpieces! Muffins are made in mini muffin pans of course but the instructions to use a one inch cookie scoop made me chuckle. A recipe of 2o or 24 servings is all baked in a 9 inch pan. Cakes are baked in mini Bundt pans. You get the idea of the scale. Even more than the tininess of the recipes, I was impressed with how good they were! The variety is amazing! My mind ran with idea in ways to enjoy this book. You could make several different recipes for a ladies meeting and every one get a plate full of the small goodies. I know they would delight children, and what about a little girl’s tea party. I can also see making a variety of recipes and give in a special box as a gift for Christmas, birthday or any special occasion! I received this book from Ulysses Press in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Calming Dot to Dot: Intricate, Stunning, Stress-Relieving Patterns for Adults

Calming Dot to Dot By Emily Wallis To be honest, when I saw the adult coloring books come out I was elated! Now I didn’t have to hide that I still enjoyed coloring as a grown-up. This book takes it up a notch!!! Another great childhood pleasure made available to adults and with challenges equal to our abilities. I found it a stress reliever just like the coloring books, but with the bonus my concentration was heightened therefore engaging my mind even more. Not only was it fun to do, but I never knew for sure what my picture would become once all the numbers were connected. It was always a surprise especially how intricate they were. I counted approximately 43 pictures, a nice number to keep me busy for a while! The book is printed on thick quality paper so if my attention to my work leads to a little too much pencil pressure on the picture, the paper didn’t tear. After I was finished with my masterpiece, I could then color it for a little more relaxation. Yes the numbers were small, but I did fine with my dollar store glasses. The book is small enough I can easily take it with me while waiting and pass the time. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to others, who enjoy challenges and would like something different, I received this book from Ulysses Press in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Id Rather Be Reading The Delights & Dilemmas of the Reading Life
by
Anne Bogel
mizroady
, September 24, 2018
The title of this book captured my attention because it is a regular thought of mine. That and the picture of the crammed bookshelf! I mused about the books written for other interests, but none are as quirky as a book to read about reading. I had to chuckle. They say “birds of a feather flock together” that is true of avid readers. We don’t have anything outwardly to show about our passion other than shelves and stacks of books visible only to those who visit our homes. In our collective love of the written page we share certain traits and oddities exclusive to our tribe. This book is for us!!! Ms. Bogel totally gets it! It is not genre biased (and neither are we, a reader is a reader!). As you read the essays you feel a sense of “yes, there are others like me!” I felt understood and accepted in my odd little world as a bookworm. She took me through a whole rainbow of emotions, from tears of laughter to tears of the heart. Ms. Bogel captured the joys of being a bookroom along with the emotional and mental conflicts. The chapter, “How to Organize Your Bookshelves” really close to home as that has been a goal for a long time. I was also taken back in time to my childhood beginning love of books. The trips the library every week in the summer. Reading all the Wizard of Oz books (I was so surprised to find there was more than one story!) and the Wind in the Willows series. The memory of being put to bed and reading under the sheet with a candle, yes a candle! Only to spill hot wax on the sheet upon hearing my mother’s footsteps. That was a sticky wicket to explain! I found this book to be delightful, making be feel normal as few of my friends, acquaintances or family is readers. If you are addicted to reading, add this book to your TBR list! I received this book from Baker Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I stated are my own.

Everything She Didnt Say

Jane Kirkpatrick

Will Rogers said he never meet a man he didn’t like, well I never read a Jane Kirkpatrick book I didn’t like! Her books always draw me in because they are about real people and history. She never ceases to amaze me how she fleshes out the historical facts she has with emotions and details to make the reader feel like they are living actual events. She has introduced me to so many women that played important roles in the past that I have never heard of. Carrie Strahorn lived an exciting and adventurous life that few women in her time had the opportunity to experience. When she married Robert Strahorn she believed her dreams would be fulfilled; children, a home, being a homemaker and entertaining friends and family as her mother had. After her the vows her said, she quickly found her life would be nothing like this. In fact it would be totally the opposite. Her husband Robert Strahorn was a writer for the railroad, creating detailed pamphlets to attract people to move west and settle with the purpose of creating communities and towns where the railroad would eventually travel through. To say this was a passion of his is an understatement. Travel almost constant travel by train, stage coach, and ship spanned a period of 45 years. There were not the comforts and amenities we have now not to mention how rough, dangerous, exhausting those modes of travel were. I don’t know how she survived. A long car trip does me in! I loved the part where they rode and cow catcher on the front of the train for a thrill; hilarious but frightening! I greatly admired her dedication and commitment to her marriage. It was far from perfect, but she chose to be the best wife she could and turn to the Lord to deal with her many hurts and struggles. Ms. Strahorn wrote a memoir, Fifteen Thousand Miles by Stage. There are excerpts from this book at the end of each chapter. I am looking forward to reading this book also and of course the next one Ms. Kirkpatrick writes! I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own .

Christmas by the Sea
by
Melody Carlson

, September 18, 2018
Hooray! A new Christmas book from Melody Carlson! It has become a holiday tradition for me! I love them! Each one stirs up Christmas nostalgia and those warm feelings the season brings. Wendy is struggling financially after her husband’s death and trying to keep her life has she has known it afloat, not only for her but for her son Jackson. She can’t see past putting one foot in front of another and maintaining her job. She gets word she has inherited her grandparent’s beach cottage in Maine. Wendy sees it as a way to pay off her bills by fixing it up and selling it in the 3 weeks they are there. This will enable them to be home by Christmas. As she enters the little town that held so many happy childhood memories her emotions are in turmoil. Her 12 year old son has other plans. He wants a fresh start in a new place, as he has been miserable since his Dad’s death. The town isn’t as small and dead as it used to be. It has grown with new people and businesses. With each reminiscence, she wards off the tugs at her heart to love the town, house and people. She has blinders on envisioning their life in Ohio as the only way they can live. Jackson barrels ahead embracing every experience and moment, and appears to think they are moving there. Wendy, not wanting to burst his bubble, makes it harder on herself by not telling him the truth. His enthusiasm and joy draws her in. When we are adults and suffer tragedy, we cling to what is familiar, unable to realize new opportunities in front of us. Children’s eyes and hearts are clear to comprehend and embrace the joyfulness of new beginnings. I saw this in Wendy and Jackson. I can relate as after my husband died I too wanted to cling to what I had known, changes were frightening and sometimes still are. I have grown to realize that I cannot continue to in the life I had because a vital part of it is no longer there. Thank you Ms. Carlson for another wonderful and touching book to warm my heart! Crack Yourself Up Jokes for Kids

Kids love jokes, the cornier, and the sillier the better! They love to tell them and will laugh at the same ones over and over even if no one else does. This book is especially for the miniature budding comedians in your life. It is packed full of jokes, riddles, and stories kids will love. All or clean, nothing off color or suggestive, something I value and appreciate in children’s reading material. The jokes have large spaces between each one so they are easy to read. While you may not find the jokes as humorous as the children, you will find yourself cracking up at the sound of their laughter. I know I do! This book came at the perfect time! I have a 5 month old grandbaby and he is already very curious and interested in everything! His favorite toy is a squishy soft book but it won’t be long till he will graduate to board books. It is never too early to introduce prayer to a little one’s life. This one checks all the boxes: Sturdy, wipe clean pages, great pictures. The pictures are soft colors. I didn’t think I would like that but I find them very soothing. They are of children (which appeals to children!) illustrating the subject of the prayer. Almost all the prayers are four lines long, just right to hold a child’s attention. They are written in rhyme which is not only entertaining but will help kids remember the prayer. I can’t wait to share it with my little boy! Rumored Fortune

Wooo whoo! Another bookshelf keeper! Tressa was filled with excitement and expectation at her father’s summons for her and her mother to come home. He had never done it before! Upon arrival she finds it was the butler who sent the message and her father is dead. She is of course heartbroken. She had never given up hope to have a relationship with her cold and distant father. Her mother is delighted because now she can spend his vast fortune he controlled. A monkey wrench is thrown into her greedy plans because it is rumored he has hidden the wealth but no one knows where! He had promised to tell Tressa before he died! So she and her mother sit in their magnificent castle home with an unpaid staff of 65 and “shillingness”. As you know when it rains it pours with life’s problems. Merchants are demanding unpaid bills, treasure hunters and greedy relatives descend upon the castle hoping to get part of the hidden treasure. On top of that she is met by a shadowy man that claims was hired for her father to care for the vineyards. A job he never delegated to anyone! I found this book to have many “treasures” of the best kind. First was the spiritual analogy of the vineyard and John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” Even though this was a fiction book, it drew the reader to the importance of Christ and their relationship with Him. The author did it so naturally! It made the story even more beautiful. Instead of just reading and enjoying it I also derived spiritual insights and thoughts. The quotes from the notebook of a viticulturist before each chapter were though provoking, making me want to them more than once. I loved the mystery, suspense and excitement! I was guessing from moment to the next about what was going to happen. Even when I jumped to conclusions I was usually wrong! Tressa’s sweet spirit and living as a Christian in such dire situations was refreshing. Her focus was on the needs of others despite her problems. I must say her mother was a bit annoying with her shallowness and “llama llama mama drama.” The author’s detailed descriptiveness of characters, emotions and setting made it like a movie was playing in my head! An incredible book! I will definitely want to read every book Ms. Politano writes! I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

This is my first book of Ms. Hunter’s to read and it has left me wanting to read all of them. I cannot even begin to express how much I liked this book and how well written it is. In the early 1800’s in England, a young aristocratic woman that found herself expecting out of wedlock had no hope. The standard protocol for the family was to disown her or send her away. Shame and ruin of the family name in society outweighed a daughter’s needs or that of the innocent child. Fathers of these precious babes were far and few between who would step up and take responsibility. Twelve years earlier Kit left her life of privilege and wealth to embark on the mission to help these unwed mothers and save their children. It was all due to her feeling responsible for her friend, Daphne ending up in the family way. In that time they had grown to a family of 12 children, her, Daphne and another woman named Jess. Her love and concern for the mothers and children were sincere but she was fueled by her guilt and trying to somehow pay for Daphne’s plight. Her methods of providing for everyone were somewhat underhanded and dark, but she saw it as justifiable with so many lives at stake. During one of her excursions into London she finds herself being chased and finds retreat hiding behind the plants at an elite ball. Lord Graham Wharton spots her and is captivated by her. Even after she flees he cannot forget her. About this time he is drawn into his friend Oliver’s search for his sister who has disappeared. Unwittingly he finds himself on Kit’s doorstep literally. Secrets unfold, romance blossoms and God begins to work in all their lives. Not only is this an intriguing novel, but I found it inspirational too. Trust in God was a strong thread that ran throughout the story. I saw how sometimes we think we trust Him and are not. We can get so drawn into “taking care” of ourselves we do not see we have put Him aside. The author also beautifully illustrated how He is taking care of your problems even though the answers have not appeared. I love love, loved this book! I cannot wait to read the next two in the series! You can read the novella that precedes the book, A Search for Refuge for free on Amazon! I received this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

This book was a great disappointment to me. The author is obviously a talented writer and I love the cover, but I found the book very confusing as to the characters and events going on. That is not where the problem lies for me though. There is no way I can qualify it as Christian fiction. The story refers to angels and the tree of life but not in a biblical sense and that was the first thing that came to my mind when seeing those words. God, Christ, and everything associated with such terminology was never mentioned. I felt that the sacred things of God and His Word were used as part of something dark, even evil. To me this was a sacrilege. I was unable to finish the book I found it so offensive. I do not believe you can associate the Holy things of God with demonic, sinful ideas. Sci-Fi and the Lord just do not mix. I hate to leave negative reviews but this book was not for me. I received this book from Revell Publishers for an honest review. Minding the Light

Suzanne Woods Fisher

I was so happy to get to read this second book in the Nantucket Series! I must admit I was thinking, “How can the author top Phoebe’s Light?”, but she did! It is now the 1800’s and the story of Mary Coffin Starbucks family continues as does her mysterious and treasured diary from 1660. The last book was such an interesting wealth of information about the life of whalers. This books shares another side of their story, what their families faced while they were out to sea earning a living. Daphne and Jane Coffin Macy are Mary’s great-great-great granddaughters. Great Mary’s diary has been passed down through the years and falls in to the hands of Daphne. As with the last book, pages of her diary are shared throughout the book. I cannot imagine having my spouse away for that long of a time, not knowing if he were dead or alive or even to return. The hardships financially and emotionally of the wives, children, and family was incredible as Ms. Fisher so deftly draws the reader into. Look at it from the whaler’s view. How much as his home and family changed in that time? I saw Ren struggle with adapting to home and the difficulties he was presented. After all, the challenges on a ship are far different than those among family and at home. There are so very many adjustments for everyone even though they are blessed to be back. I always like how Ms. Fisher’s characters, no matter how small, are fleshed out that you feel as you know them and have met them. No matter how many years pass, man’s shortcomings never change nor does virtue and character. Daphne was so sweet and kind, always putting others needs before hers. Her faith and reliance on God was inspiring. You can’t even begin to believe, that she is Lillian’s daughter. Lillian is her opposite, a very bitter, dishonest greedy woman. I think my favorite character was Abraham; Ren’s extremely loyal black officer and friend on Ren’s ship. He had more character in his pinkie than some of the wealthy, “upstanding” citizens of the island. This story holds more surprises and intrigue than the other book, especially concerning Great Mary’s diary. I even more anxious for the next book to come out!!! I received this book from Revell publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own.

Hearts Entwined: A Historical Romance Novella Collection
by
Karen Witemeyer and Mary Connealy and Regina Jennings

, July 09, 2018
Novella’s are such a wonderful change of pace in reading. While a good long book is really to get into is great, I love how novella’s allow you have a have a “snack” and the treat of moving on to the next story! Hearts Entwined is exceptional as are all the authors! This collection of historical romances is top notch! The Love Knot by Karen Witemeyer, has an unusual plot which I thoroughly enjoyed. Misunderstanding drove Claire and Pieter apart years ago but a surprising event brings them back together. This is a beautiful story of forgiveness and what true love really is. It can overcome the strongest stubbornness and pride. The Tangled Ties That Bind by Mary Connealy, was a delightful read, filled with so much humor. Conner has been gone from home for 5 years but returns with big plans for his future to marry his childhood love Maggie. After 5 years she has quit waiting and has moved on with her life. He definitely took her for granted. Both are equally set on pursuing their dreams and it doesn’t set well with each other. Conner is determined not to give up. Through his deep love and sacrifices for Maggie, God brings about amazing things. Bound and Determined by Regina Jennings. Ms. Jennings books are hard to put down so this story was a page turner too! This novella had a lot of humor in it too. (Love that!) Bradley Willis is a private in the cavalry. His youthful impulsiveness though with good intent has him “punished” with a mission to carry out. To his surprise it is escorting a Captain and is very attractive daughter, Ambrosia, across the scorching Texas plain. Oh and the captain’s beloved camels! Bradley and Ambrosia’s feisty personalities were fun to watch play out. Learning about the camels was fascinating and their usefulness to the Texas Calvary in the mid 1800’s. Tied and True by Melissa Jagears kept me turning pages. It is the story of poor boy falls in love with rich girl but with a twist to it. Marianne’s parents had her life planned out for her up to the detail of whom she would marry, an equally wealthy childhood friend, David. Her heart though had made other plans as she fell in love with his poor secretary, Calvin. He returned her feelings but strongly believed it would not work. The things she did to prove her love were incredible! I liked her compassion and true servant’s heart in the Lord. Not only her family’s bank account stood in the way of convincing Calvin but memories of a difficult childhood. Marianne truly displayed the motto, “Actions speak louder than words” to show him that her love was what was important, not rich lifestyle was all she wanted. My what spunk she had! A sweet love story. I received this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

The Sound of Rain

The Appalachian Mountains are as much a part of Judd Markley as the blood that flows through his veins. They were his beloved home but, that all changed when the mine collapsed where he and his brother, Joe, worked, badly injuring him and taking the life of his little brother. The grief and the memories are to strong and he can’t bear to stay. He flees to South Carolina and is hired by a timber company. There he throws himself it to work and tries to make sense of his scattered future without Joe. When he first meets the boss’s beautiful daughter Larkin, all he sees is a superficial bratty rich girl. But as they say you can’t judge a book by its cover, even a pretty, wealthy one. Always running into each other, they begin to develop a friendship and Larkin is not what she had judged her to be. Joe was running from the past and Larkin wanted to run into the future she felt God had for her. That is to serve with her disowned brother, Ben, who was a pastor in the woodlands of Kentucky, helping the poverty stricken. Both find themselves in need of God’s strength. Ben needs His strength to turn back to Him and trust Him again. Larkin needs His strength to go against her father and his worldly plans for her even if it means hurting him. Larkin pulls some real doozeys to have her way, catching Judd in the middle. In spite of all the internal and external conflicts they find themselves falling in love. I can understand Judd’s grief and wanting to run from it. I admired his fortitude and gumption to put all he had into a new and very unfamiliar job. His work ethic was amazing. I loved Larkin’s faith and determination to follow God’s plan no matter what obstacles stood in her way. Even when faced with the reality of her naivety she wasn’t deterred. The Appalachian people and their lifestyle has long been great interest to me. The community and people that Ben worked with were wonderful! Their personalities, behavior and customs were intriguing. The contrast between their lives and Larkins were startling especially as she tried to integrate herself into their mountain home. I think my favorite character of all was Granny Jane. She was such fun and her patience Larkin and wisdom were refreshing. I was caught up in her way of thinking and sayings! An excellent book that truly drops you into the time and place right along with the characters. Another terrific book by Ms. Thomas. I received this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Hearts Appeal London Beginnings Book Two

Jennifer Delamere

, June 26, 2018
This is my first book to read of Ms. Delamere’s and I must say I was very impressed! Since this is the 2nd in a series I definitely want to read the first one, “The Captain’s Daughter”. Julia is a strong woman, in determination and faith. She is going to need both to achieve her goal of becoming a doctor in 1881. Women’s doctors were frowned upon and faced great opposition. There were few places they could go to medical school and be trained. Already a competent midwife/nurse (both of which were acceptable according to society) Julia had a master plan. She was going to get into medical school then head to Africa as a missionary to heal souls and bodies. This is her passion. With little in the way of money but lots in the way of motivation she forges ahead. Her master plan is in place until one faithful day when involved in a subway accident she saves the life of Michael, a handsome, wealthy lawyer with plans of his own that do not include God. He desires to marry well and be a huge success. Julia is intrigued by him and after the accident persuades him to give her lessons in Latin (which she sorely needs for her upcoming exam). It turns out he is the very attorney on the case to close down the women’s medical school she is working so hard to enter! They find themselves falling in love but their path is scattered with many complications greater than the conflict of interests. There are so many things I liked about this book! Foremost, how faith and dependence on God was key throughout the book. I found it ironic that Julia was a woman of prayer and sought the Lord in all matters, yet she had left Him out of HER life plan. A trap I feel many of us fall into at one time her another. I loved the fact that she was raised in George Mueller’s orphanage; no wonder she had such a strong walk with God! It was inspirational to see her commitment to the Lord with all people no matter how they ridiculed or rejected her. She truly lived Christ. Michael to me represented the standards of the world even today: money, fame, achievement, all without God. In both their lives I saw how we can make all the plans we want, but will step in and change them to His. Sometimes His intervention may come in the form of problems and difficulties. This was much more than a wonderfully written historical romance! There was danger, mystery, and a totally unpredictable plot! I loved it! Breaking the Fear Cycle: How to Find Peace for Your Anxious Heart
by
Maria Furlough
mizroady
, May 15, 2018
I related to this book as soon as I read the title. The fear cycle, yes I know it well for many years. The picture pops in my head of a bicycle wheel going around and around. There are times that my fears would fade only to be brought back full force by thoughts or circumstances. I know from experience it is a vicious “cycle”. I know God in His Word says “do not fear” but I have been caught in its endless circle. Ms. Furlough’s book is light shining on this dark problem all believers face. She openly and honestly shares her journey in overcoming this debilitating stronghold Satan builds in our lives. The lessons she learned are the reader’s blessings. She asks questions I knew the answer to but was afraid (yes fear again) to face. The gentle way she nudged me into facing my fears, some I had not even named. I like that she didn’t just talk about the problem but through scripture and reflection guided me with workable solutions defeat this foe in my life. She doesn’t sugar coat the fact that it will be a battle I have to fight with the Lord beside me, reminding me that my weapon is scripture. The 14 promises in scripture that God will protect me will be something I will use from now on. Sharing her personal fears and struggles with them not only were uplifting but made me feel she truly understands! With God we have nothing fear and the old saying popped into my head, “we have nothing to fear but fear itself”. Yes! I want “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding” in Philippians 4:7 It is not a read it once book. You will want to read it, highlight in it, and make notes. I feel now I have a scriptural battle plan and the mindset truly have victory. It is going to be a process and a journey but so worth it! The Rescue: Seven People, Seven Amazing Stories...
by
Jim Cymbala
mizroady
, April 30, 2018
The Rescue By Jim Cymbala, Contributor Ann Spangler Seven different, people, seven different messed up lives, and one loving God. Anyone looking from the outside would say they have no chance of ever changing but thank goodness God doesn’t look on the outside! It might also appear that their situations were so dire and far gone that they had no hope. But with God all things are possible! To society these people would seem to be broken beyond repair but enter the Lord and His miraculous healing and love. I have read inspirational stories about God redeeming people deep in, but I found this one to be a bit different. The people tell their own stories in a very detailed and personal way. I could feel their despair and misery through their words. I also felt their amazement and joy when they met the Lord and he changed their lives forever. Some of them were victims of the wrongs of others, and some put themselves where they were at by their own choices. I was reminded of the quote by R. Zaccharias “ Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.” The stories brought to light how a transgression will multiply into many as time goes on, and continues to grow worse until one surrenders to God’s intervention. I was blessed at reading the many different ways the Lord reached out and spoke to each person. It shows what a personal God He is. There is no cookie cutter pattern for God to touch a life. Thank goodness! They did not even know they needed Him, but He came to them and met them where they were at. No matter how far the individuals had fallen, when they accepted Christ the changes were permanent. How wonderful to read about their lives before Christ and after. I was amazed. One the biggest ways this book spoke to me was that although my problems may not be of the same magnitude, He will do miraculous things for me too! His power is limitless in all areas! I knew this already but the book brought it home even closerThis book was so encouraging and hope filled! What testimonies of God’s love and power today! I received this book from Chosen Books in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Ladies of Ivy Cottage

I was well into this book before I realized it was a continuation of the previous one, The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill. To me this shows it can absolutely be read as a standalone! I had trouble getting into the story, it was a slow start, but I am so glad I continued! It was a rewarding read! There are a lot of characters but Ms. Klassen did a stellar job of making it easy to keep them straight by her detailed personalization of their individual emotions, thoughts, and characteristics. She flawlessly wove in and out of each one’s experiences giving the story depth. The 1800’s was not an easy time for a single woman, especially in providing for themselves. The book shares the lives of three such women. Jane is a widow who has the blessing of being proprietor deceased husband’s family. Rachel is alone due to the death of her father, but lost her inheritance and her only source of income. Mercy has given up finding love and resigned herself to spinsterhood. While each lady faces difficult challenges they have the strong support of one another. Romance blooms for each, but not without difficulty and heartache. Even though Jane had a source of income, handling the stress and responsibility alone was challenging to say the least. It was no walk in the park! Though she was cheerful and caring, she carried a heavy load of grief in the loss of many children by miscarriage. Of the three, Rachel had the least and solely relied on the kindness of her friends. Her story saddened me. She had lived in wealth and comfort before she lost her father. I feel her situation was the hardest to go from having everything to being homeless and penniless. I admired her spunk and determination to provide for herself and earn a living with what meager means there were. Mercy, poor homely Mercy. She had such a sweet and loving spirit. Though her outside was plain her inside was beautiful. She ran a girl’s school and lived with her Aunt Matilda. I loved Aunt Matilda, she was such a hoot. Not only did she make me laugh but I enjoyed the spirit in which she shared her wisdom with the girls. Mercy was so dedicated to her students. Her home actually belonged to her brother who was living overseas. After he marries her meddling (and irritating) parents give her an ultimatum to marry a suitor they have introduced her to or lose everything. Her situation reminded me of how few choices women, especially from wealthy families, had during this time. Mercy wants to marry for love. But with her looks her parents feel she will be lucky if ANYONE will have her. Each of the characters were inspiring in their faith, growth, and in spiritual lessons Their lives taught. A wonderful read! I received this book from Bethany House Publisher in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

A Borrowed Dream

Catherine Whitfield is a school teacher in the Texas town of Cimarron City, in the late 1800’s. She cared deeply for all her students and was concerned about their welfare as well as their education. A new student, Hannah Goddard comes to school with her strikingly handsome widowed father. They had recently purchased a ranch and moved from Pennsylvania. His daughter is very unhappy and struggling to adjust. Unbeknownst to the town, he is not a rancher, but a doctor, attempting to hide and protect his daughter from a criminal. Catherine having just lost her mother due to the local doctor’s primitive medical treatment, has more on her mind that the attractive new man. Hilariously he is all the mothers in town with single daughters of a marriageable can think of. Although I laughed, I felt sorry for poor Austin trying to politely dodge all of them. I found the story very entertaining and suspenseful but there were also some surprising parts. The first being Austin wasn’t just any doctor but a plastic surgeon! I didn’t even know there were any back then! My first thoughts were, “There weren’t face lifts, breast plants or liposuction, and so what did they do?” After some research I found they did reconstructive surgery on severe injuries. Many of their patients were soldiers injured in battle. Conniving and hardened criminals were just as much present then as now. Just such a one was in pursuit of Austin to force him to use his skills evil plans. I naively have pictured the era that this was written in as far simpler than our society today. It surprised me that the same problems and corruptions existed in this era too! One of Catherine’s students’ is severely abused and neglected by his father. A young girl is raped and becomes pregnant. There were no government agencies or special law enforcements to help the victims or bring their perpetrators to justice. The care and protection of the innocent came from loving, kindhearted and caring people. It was a reminder that individuals were much more personally involved in the lives of their neighbors, especially in times of need. Ms. Cabot beautifully illustrates true forgiveness and godly character in the face of horrible circumstances and offenses. A wonderful book! I received this book from Revell Publications in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Singing the Scriptures How All Believers Can Experience Breakthrough Hope & Healing
by
Julie A Meyer, Heidi Baker

It was many years ago when I learned heard about singing the scriptures. I have since then loved the idea as another way to praise and worship God. What better words to sing to God than His own. I pray them to Him but I want to sing them too. I was definitely interested in this book! I have read that if we read, speak, and write something we will have a greater capacity to remember it. How much more so if we sing it too, and of all things we read the Bible is the most important to recall! In fact words set to music are easier to memorize, they naturally just stick in your mind. What about commercial jingles? How many of those do can we sing word for word even from out childhood? God loves for us to sing to Him. He doesn’t care if we have a wonderful voice or not. He hears from our heart. Numerous times in scripture we find it as a command. Consider that the Lord placed an entire book on the Psalms sang to Him. I must say I was a little apprehensive about how hard this might be, as I had studied a method of matching old hymns to Bible verses and it was quite daunting. Ms. Meyer’s method is very easy and doable for everyone. Just sing, make up a tune; anyone can do this! The book is filled with encouragement to step out and try. There are many testimonies the incredible change this practice has had on the author’s and others lives. She also brings out what the scriptures have to say about song and those who sang to Him. At the end of the chapters is a suggested prayer, questions to answer and a big bonus; the link address to Ms. Meyers’ website for a video to further instruction in this. I loved her passion and excited for this, it is contagious. A fantastic book1 I received this book from Chosen Books in exchange for an

This book gave me a personal view of life during the American Revolution I had not seen before. I hadn’t thought how much of a perilous time it was for many. History is great at giving the facts but does not share the intimate experiences of individuals during that era. I knew the Patriots and Tories were passionately opposed America’s independence, but I had never taken into consideration the great cost and private losses to those faithful to the Crown. I found it strange to think George Washington and Patrick Henry were viewed as the bad guys, when they are our heroes! Through Elizabeth Lawson I was able to experience all of this. It is 1775 in Williamsburg Virginia. Wealthy and socially elite, she plans her wedding to Miles Roth. There is no love involved; it is arranged by her father. Sadly what Miles has in social standing he lacks in morality and character, a skirt chaser and gambler. On the night of their engagement party he is involved in is favorite pastimes and sends his cousin Noble Rynallt to escort her. This causes quite a stir in more than one way; Rynallt is a Patriot. She is extremely impressed by him, especially in comparison to his no-count cousin. Then one night her entire world is turned upside down and her future changed forever. The Tories flee, including Elizabeth’s father and fiancé, the revolutionaries ransack her beautiful mansion, looting and destroying. All her servants flee but two and she survives unharmed. She goes from being rich to homeless. Noble steps up and to offer his protection by inviting her to his home. This was an awkward situation at best, especially considering their opposing political sides. Having no choice she accepts. I was amazed at her strength and faith! She was not the whiney, shallow rich girl that many of that time were. I saw a great lesson in controlling one’s thoughts. She did not allow negative, self-pitying, or fearful thoughts to remain, but consistently directed her mind back to God’s Word. This was quite a feat considering her French maid was constantly bombarding her with negativity. Noble, lives up to his name and proves to be a man of integrity and compassion. He too has a strong faith in God and that his guide. I admired how he was able to allow Elizabeth her views while continuing to pursue and stand for his quest for our nation’s independence. Through Ms. Frantz’s skilled writing I was a part of the scenery, customs, and drama of the time! A book I truly enjoyed! I received a copy of this book free from Revell Publications. Missing Isaac

I spent my childhood in the 1960’s so I felt a certain connection with Pete McLean. I was not faced with the loss of my father as he was but the times he lived in I vividly remember. After his father dies in a terrible farming accident on their land, he feels lost and overwhelmed. He was blessed in having Isaac Reynolds, a Negro farm worker that had been there as long as Pete could remember. He was not only a loyal friend to the late Mr. McLean but also to Pete. While the McLean’s embraced all people the same regardless of their skin color, at that time society did not. Isaac had character, wisdom and gentleness despite his background of poverty. But the young boy’s source of comfort is quickly gone as his friend suddenly disappears without a trace. He resolves to discover what happened to his dear friend no matter what it takes. For the next six years as he grows from boyhood to young manhood he puts his heart and soul into solving the mystery. In his searching for the truth his path crosses with Dovey Pickett. There couldn’t be two more opposites socially. A wealthy white boy and a back woods impoverished girl. Here again Pete turns his back on societal norms and romance blossoms. The book was entertaining and informative. I grew up in a middle class family that had enough, and I had friends that were wealthy, but I had no idea there were people living in such hardship and deprivation. I saw on the news about racism in the nation, but I had trouble understanding why such conflict existed. I admired Pete’s integrity that gave him the strength to not give into hypocrisy or discrimination. He was a strong testimony of what child is taught in the home will carry into his adulthood and values. His relationship with Isaac and Dovey shows that compassion and character override any obstacles in friendship or love. An outstanding first novel for Ms. Luesse! I look forward to reading more of her books to come! I received a copy of this book free from Revell Publications. I was not required to write a positive review. Cherished Mercy

I have read the 1st book in this series and now this one (the 3rd). They can be read as a standalones. I am waiting on book number 2 now. While a very young girl Mercy Flanagan had lived through the Whitman Massacre. I was in awe that after being part of such a horrific experience and losing her parents, that she would want to return to the area. Their dear family friend Eletta Browning was expecting and needed care and help with their young daughter. Her willingness to go was three fold: bored with her life in Oregon City, she wants to spread her wings, her desire to help the Browning family, and deep love of and desire to minister the Tututni Indians. She wanted to share God with them but also promote peace between them and the white man. Her sisters are concerned if she will be safe but are assured no harm will come to her. They concede with trepidation as this is their baby sister. She travels to the Rogue Valley Mission. There she also meets Adam, a strong influence and Christian leader at the mission. Both have no desire to marry. Mercy’s has no interest in finding a spouse and Adam has hurts from the past that have built walls toward any romantic involvement. Both are caught off guard when find themselves strongly attracted to each other. They deny it to themselves and try to explain it away but their hearts won’t listen. Problems do arise and to the point and their lives are in danger. Mercy’s strength and courage amazed me. It was an eye opener to see all she had to do to perform even simple tasks. I guess living with so many conveniences now I expected her to be complaining about all the work! Hardship was a way of life. The Brownings, Adam and Mercy’s reliance on God was deep. He was the first One they turned to whether the need be large or small. If something was lacking they had to find a way to supply it; if there was danger there was 911 to call. It made me think how much we rely on all we have available rather than crying out to God first. The story is suspenseful, exciting, and filled with so many examples of godly character. I truly enjoyed this book as I do all of Ms. Peterson’s. I received this book from Bethany Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Unwrapping the Names of Jesus An Advent Devotional

I have always been intensely interested in the names of Jesus and God. They aren’t just names they have much deeper means. I couldn’t wait to read this book! Right away the cover drew me in. It is so pretty and festive! I love the title too! Christmas is associated of course with the giving and opening of material gifts. While is nothing wrong with giving and receiving gifts, unfortunately it has become the focus of the holiday instead of Christ’s birth. We forget to “unwrap” the greatest gift we will ever receive, Jesus! There are 4 weeks devotionals divided into five days each and one for Christmas day. Everyday centers around a name of Jesus. The 4 sections begin with an introduction and lighting the advent candle. Verses to read, discussion questions and a suggested Christmas carol to sing. These are a great start for the ones that follow. The daily devotions are short but well written and include scriptures. At the end of all of them is a prayer, a challenge and more scriptures to study. (I like that!) When you finish the 5 days, there is more!! Listed are service focused activities to choose from that your family can together that focus on Christ. This book is beautiful inside and out! It adds so much meaning to celebrating Christmas! It would be great for a family, group, or personal study to be used year after year! I wish I could give Ms. Ciuciu’s book 6 stars! I found it inspiring and a great blessing! I received a free copy of this devotional in exchange for my review. I was not required to give a positive review. The thoughts and opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck
by

, December 05, 2017
Sarah had it all…well she thought she had it all. She was married to her high school sweetheart, she was a famous writer of sleazy romance novels, and extremely wealthy, then her marriage begins to fail. Her world falls apart when she finds her husband cheating on her in their home. After her divorce she feels confused and unhinged. Her friend, Piper, reaches out to her and leads her to Christ. On her very first visit to Piper’s church she meets the minister, Ben. They are both are instantly smitten with each other. A bit of a complicated situation considering he is a man of God and she is the writer of X-rated books? She is a new creature in Christ and wants to follow Him in all areas of her life including her writing. This book’s story line is unusual in several ways. First, I have never read Christian fiction about a newborn Christian and their spiritual growth. Many of us as believers may have forgotten the newness of our walk with God and total dedication to the Lord. Sarah’s new life is a reminder of that sweet season and also how easily we can lose that focus as time goes on. I enjoyed watching her learn God’s ways and strive to change when He convicted her of sin. Her hunger to learn and obey the Lord was so wonderful! The story addresses passion and physical desire between a single man and woman that honor God’s guidelines for purity before marriage. The author handles this in a very tasteful way. The temptations and difficulties faced were so true-to-life. Being attracted to the opposite sex is a natural part of how we are created. What is important is how it is handled according to God’s Word. I loved the cleverness and humor throughout the book. I understand what the author was trying to convey, but was disappointed that Ben and Sarah’s relationship seemed rather one dimensional, focusing on the physical and not the other aspects of a healthy relationship that grows toward marriage. In addition, Ben as a pastor didn’t seem interested in discipling his new convert. I found the book unusual and entertaining. I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

Lady Jayne Disappears

Joanna Davidson Politano
mizroady
, December 05, 2017
This is Ms. Politano’s first book and I know without a doubt I will want to read anything she publishes! What a talented writer! I was hooked after I read the first page! The setting is in England during the 1860’s. Debtor’s prisons were notorious then. Those who owed were locked up until they could pay their debts or someone else would pay for them. Aurelie Harcout grew up in one such prison with her father. He was a famous writer with the penname of Nathaniel Droll. He dies and without finishing the ending to his novel, “Lady Jayne Disappears”. She purposes to finish it under her father’s professional name. All she knows of his wealthy family are the stories he has told. Lady Jayne was her mother. Now left in total poverty and all alone, she is summoned and escorted to the infamous Lynhurst Manor, her father’s family home. She had never met his family. When she arrived they were expecting his personal affects, not a young woman! Although she grew up in the prison, she is a beautiful, articulate, young woman with strong character. Entering the world outside would have been enough of transition for her, but to be thrust into high society with such a cold, unwelcoming, secretive family was over the top. Though she was only 20, her maturity and strength allowed her to cope with such dignity and grace. I love her sweet and innocent spirit. This is a wholesome Christian mystery thriller. The plot was outstanding! There were so many surprising developments and totally unexpected turns that I couldn’t put the book down. Don’t’ expect to pre-guess the outcome of any part and prepare to be astonished over and over. I am finding it difficult to write this review as how to you describe a masterpiece! I can say this; you will WANT to read this book! Ms. Politano has been “engraved” into my favorite author’s list. I cannot wait to read her next book in 2018. I hope she writes many many more! I received this book from Revell Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

This book was amazing! It is 1909 and immigrants from all over the world were coming to America seeking a better life. Many family members went ahead and made the way for others to come. This was the case for Rune, Signe Carlson and their 3 sons. Their dream was to come to the U.S. from Norway to own land and have their own farm. Their opportunity came when Einar Strand, Rune’s uncle sends a letter to his parents. He has settled in Minnesota. The land he is homesteading is covered in huge pine trees. He needs help logging them and sending them to mills. His wife Gerd is ill and he requests for Rune and his family to move there and help. There is the promise of a home already built and large enough for all of them to live in, a school for children, and the understanding that after their tickets were paid back they would receive their own land. The Carlson’s had never met the Strands, but they were family right? Norwegian Families were close and caring, right? The summer voyage is very difficult and uncomfortable and to make matters more challenging, Signe is pregnant with her fourth child. After previous miscarriages she is concerned about losing the baby. The worse is yet to come though. Arriving at Uncle Einar’s is when the nightmare begins. There is not a proper room other than the cold attic for the family to sleep in. The house is filthy and Aunt Gerd is bed fast and declining because of lack of care. Einar is hateful, uncaring and demanding. He has not concern for the young family’s needs or even health. Aunt Gerd is constantly hollering for something and speaks little otherwise. She is also ungrateful for any kindnesses and very uncooperative. The promises go up in smoke and the Carlson’s find themselves as nothing more than slaves with no end in sight. The author captures the minute details of day to day life in this era and the emotions and struggles of Rune and Signe. I even got tired reading about all the work they did, especially Signe and with expecting a child! I hurt for her missing and needing her loving family. She was so alone. In addition to being a delightful read, the most powerful part of this book is their Christ like attitudes Carlsons (even their children) in the face of constant cruelty and abuse. What a testimony!!! They kept their words kind, and continued to do their very best work. The patience the family displayed was incredible! Yes they became aggravated and upset but chose to give a soft answer or turn the other cheek. Their children followed their example in word and action with maturity far beyond their years. A strong faith in God and living His Word were their foundation. I admired them so much! I cannot wait for the sequel! I received this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

As I have mentioned in past reviews, I love historical fiction, medicine, midwifery, and the Appalachian people. This book checks all those boxes! To say the least I was excited to start reading it, but I had no idea incredible writing skills of Ms. Gabhart! I had never heard of the Frontier Nursing Services before reading this book. The character Breckinridge was a real person and founder. The author read these midwife’s real first-person accounts of their services. This gave the book the realism and authenticity that allows the reader to experience the unique lifestyles of the Appalachian families and the experiences of the nurses. I thoroughly enjoyed the unusual Appalachian words and sayings! I found them very clever and entertaining. Ms. Gabhart’s research not only made the people in the story come to life, but also gives a deep glimpse into the mind, personality, beliefs, and strength of these amazing people. After reading the book, the term “hillbillies” is such a derogatory term to assign to these incredible Appalachians. After Fran hears the man she thought was to be her husband is coming home engaged to an English girl, all her plans go up in smoke. Her dreams of being a wife and mother are shattered. Her overbearing, critical mother isn’t very sympathetic. When she hears of the midwife training in the hills of Kentucky she feels this is where she needs to be. She falls in love with the hills, the mountain people, and the many challenges of “catching babies” and tending to varied medical emergencies. Ben belonged to the hills but had been away at war serving as medic. Much had changed in the years he had gone, most of all, his father’s death. Part of him wants to stay and the other wants to use the GI Bill to further his education. He meets Fran and his feelings for her only add to his confusion. I liked the way I could see the mountains through Ben’s eyes, his appreciation and depth of having grown up there, but it was also a delight to see them through Fran’s. She observed everything with freshness, newness and innocence. It was her observations of both mind and heart that made me feel a part of the hardships, difficult weather and learning to live a totally new way of life. I cannot pick a favorite character, they were all delightful. The book has romance, suspense, adventure, and humor. I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read more writings by Ms. Gabhart! I received this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

I am always excited when Ms. Carlson publishes and new book and cannot wait to read it. I love the way she captures the true Christmas spirit in so many different ways. All stories are different and filled with faith and surprises. All my other books including this one stays on my bookshelf. I do not even loan them out! It’s 1944 and men are being shipped off to war at a moment’s notice. Caught up in whirlwind romances and knowing the possibility of being separated for years or forever, it wasn’t uncommon for young couples to give into temptation. This is what happened to Amelia when she fell in love with James. She gives birth to his son only to find out that he is reported dead. She finds herself with no job and no money to provide for her child. She decides her only hope is to go to James’ parents for help. The problem is they have no clue that her and baby Jimmy even exist. Upon learning that his family is influential and wealthy she cringes at how they might react to her being an unwed mother? Would they believe her story? Will they reject her, and worse yet her son? Does she have any hope? Bravely she leaves California and travels to his hometown in Montana. There she faces heart wrenching difficulties and serious problems for her and her baby. Things go from bad to worse but she still struggles to go to James’ family. Finally a life threatening situation causes her to make a desperate decision but one made from the depths of love. My heart ached for Amelia as she struggled. I admired her true mother’s love and devotion, and sacrifices she made for her little boy. The story had many surprises and sudden turns. Ms. Carlson beautifully illustrated the true meaning of Christmas is an unusual and unexpected way. While Amelia was pregnant out of wedlock, her issue was in no way treated as acceptable or appropriate. Another 5 star book! Thank you Melody Carlson! I understand this is the third book in a series. I have not read to the first two books and I feel like I missed a great deal. I don’t feel like it can be read and truly enjoyed as a standalone. Scotland is some place I would love to visit. The author captured the beauty of the landscape, the historical background, and the heart of the people that live there. While I enjoyed his attention to detail in all aspects, at times it made the reading rather slow and cumbersome. There were points I had to push to get keep going as my interest waned. Loni unexpectedly inherits a small island in the Shetlands. The Scots strongly steeped in tradition and family ties were not happy with an outsider suddenly being thrust upon them in a position of leadership. The resident’s rejection makes Loni’s adjustment even more difficult, causing her to question what path to take. As a unique twist to the story she finds herself falling for the local chieftain, David Tulloch whom the islanders believe to be the true heir. The story switches back and forth between Loni and David’s present day romance and that of her great-grandparents through old journals written by her great-grandmother. I especially liked the latter parts. They were relevant to me for a couple of reasons. I have a diary kept by my uncle that describes my father’s and his life growing up. Also I have a friend doing a genealogy search for me on my family history. There is something special about knowing where you came from and who your past family was. It gives you grounding and a feeling of belonging. I see this in Loni as she reads the journals. The most important thing is finding strength and inspiration from your spiritual heritage. Over all I had trouble sticking to the story, maybe because I hadn’t read the first two books. I received this book from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions I stated are my own.

With You Always: Orphan Train #1
by
Jody Hedlund

, August 17, 2017
After losing both her parents, German immigrant Elise Neumann, finds herself homeless and sole provider for her 2 younger sisters and 2 motherless orphans. In the late 1850’s life was harsh for women in poverty and alone. She is only 19 years old but very mature and courageous from all the suffering and adversities she has faced in her young life. They find themselves living on the streets and in dire straits. Miss Pendleton, a wealthy, Christian woman who has sold all to open a mission in the slums of lower Manhattan, invites them to live there. While the mission is better than the streets, it has not been renovated yet and is filled with filth and vermin. No matter, Elise and her sisters are grateful. Miss Pendleton’s purpose for her ministry is to help prostitutes get off the streets and earn and honest living. She hires them as seamstresses to do work for local business. This is Elise’s trade and she begins work. Not long after, the city finds itself in severe financial straits and the work ends. With a broken heart she is forced to leave her sisters there while she goes west to work in a new town being developed along the railroad. Little does she know the new town she is going to be employed in is part of a challenge between Thornton Quincey and his twin brother to prove who is worthy to inherit the family business from their dying father. Thornton Quincy, wealthy New York socialite, is completely at the other end of the social scale from Elise. Here their paths cross again (you have to read the book to find out how they met). She was proof you don’t’ have to be wealthy to be confident and he confirmed you don’t have to be poor to be meek. I totally enjoyed their interactions and sense of humor. Despite the vast ocean of class that divides them a seed of romance is planted. The story is a touching example that true love knows no boundaries, and God’s plans are not limited by circumstances. While since her parent’s death and one setback after another, Elise feels God has abandoned her. Through her adversities she grows to see He has always been there. I was reminded of Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Being a huge fan of historical Christian novels, I appreciated the author’s thorough research. Being based on a true incident, Ms. Hedlund did a skillful job of fleshing out the story and characters. I had heard a lot about the orphan trains but was unaware of plight poverty-stricken women during this era. It shocked me to realize so many had to leave their children to work in the Midwest to provide for them. It seemed they jumped out of the frying pan into the fire as the employers exploited and abused them. I cannot imagine going through what these women did. An outstanding book! Can’t wait for a sequel! I received this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own. . ,

A Love So True
by
Melissa Jagears

, August 15, 2017
This is my first book to read of Ms. Jagears and I was very impressed. Her subject was unique to most novels; prostitution in the early 1900’s. It was as destructive a lifestyle then as now. Evelyn Wisely had a heart for those affected by it, not only the women but also the children born as a result and the men who paid for the services. You would think she would be applauded by the people of her town but most people during that era were quick to judge and reject the sinner than to help. She faced great opposition. This did not deter her from pursuing the ministry she felt called to. David Kingsman, a business man, joins her by allowing the women to earn honest money by cleaning his factory after hours. He is also attacked in his efforts by his employees. Both are strong Christians and determined to help no matter what the cost. To say the obstacles they face are formidable is putting it mildly. The conditions the women and children lived in was tragic and even more so knowing the same things are happening in our day and time. Morality and Christianity, during that era held very high standards but tended to be snobbish and repulsed by those living in sin. There was definitely a “holier than thou attitude.” They failed to hate the sin and love the sinner. David truly impressed me and I enjoyed him. Even though he exuded wealth and good looks his humility and respect for the prostitutes and children was a beautiful testimony. I love how at ease he was with them and did everything to make them feel comfortable. I also admired Evelyn and David because the each was struggling with difficult and painful personal issues but that did not deter them from giving 100% of themselves. Most people go inward with self-pity and selfishness rather than looking outward. A great story with a strong Christian message. It brought to my mind Philippians 2:3. “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” I received this book from Bethany Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own. “

Beverly Lewis is a classic writer! Her books always give me spiritual and scriptural inspiration. I truly enjoy reading them. Twenty year old Sallie Riehl is at that point in her life where she must choose to make a lifetime commitment to the Amish church by joining and being baptized. She even has a beau courting her, Perry, whom she has no attraction to. Sallie is invited by a wealthy family to spend the summer as their nanny at the beach in New Jersey. Her parents agree to let her go but with great reservations. Her strong desire to travel and see the world is a constant conflict with the Amish beliefs. Reasoning that this trip will get it out of her system she more than happily agrees to go. What fun it was to experience the trip, the ocean and the beach through her eyes! Such a fresh view of so much we take for granted. As if all there was to see and do are not enough she gets a taste of freedom she never before had. Her weekends are open to do as she pleases. On her grand adventure she meets Kevin. He is fun, interesting, shares her dreams to travel and she finds herself having strong feelings toward him. Upon her return home the trip has not only failed to extinguish her passion for travel, but Sallie finds herself desiring it even more. Her eyes being opened she realizes she is not happy with her Amish life. She must now make the decision to disappoint her family and leave or stay forever living in discontent. The book’s title was so meaningful to the story. The way time and circumstances pulls us forward into the future and back into the past. The book presents a strong testimony of seeking God’s will in the face of tough decisions; pleasing Him or others. An excellent book! Treasured Grace 1 Heart of the Frontier
by
Tracie Peterson

Historical novels are always so exciting to me as I get to step into the past with characters and their lives the author has created. I live beside them and experience living and facing challenges during that era. The early American frontier was such a time of change and adventure. That’s why so many of us love westerns right? Reading about those times and entertaining ourselves with movies is far different than living during that era. This is something the author really brought to light for me. If you lost your family you were on your own and at the true mercy of others. You couldn’t run down to Walmart and buy medicine when you were sick or groceries and these are just a few difficulties they faced! After losing her parents, Grace marries the bad-tempered Rev. Martindale so she could provide for her sisters and travel the Oregon Trail west. It was a marriage of convenience as he had to be married to serve as a missionary. Her plans were derailed when he suddenly dies along the way. She is left with nothing again. Dr. Whitman of the Whitman Mission (of the infamous massacre) allows them to stay. Grace finds herself in conflict with the doctor/missionary because she is an herbalist. He does not want her treating anyone. This is ironic as she saved so many lives with her remedies on the wagon train. It reminded me of western medicine and holistic medicine conflicts today. While Grace and her sisters have a roof over their head they are not out of danger. Unfortunately the wagon train brought an epidemic of measles and there are many deaths, especially among the Indians. The Cayuse Indians the doctor is treating are dying in large numbers. They believe his medicine is purposely killing them. Add to that the problem of the increasing population of white men taking the Indian’s land, and there is serious trouble. Hostilities are increasing and the mission is in danger of Indian attack. A bright note in her life is handsome trapper Alex Armistead. Familiar with the ways of the Indians and the wilderness, he protects and watches out for Grace and her sisters. There were so many things I liked about the book. First and foremost was the focus on scripture and the plan of salvation. So rare to find a novel that actually shares this. The author emphasized strongly the reliance on God and strong faith in any situation, not allowing compromises. The tragedies faced by the characters are heart-breaking. I use natural remedies and oils regularly. I found it extremely interesting as to how Grace used and obtained her treatments. Once again a startling reminder of the hardships the people faced with injuries and illness. Always a great author, Ms. Peterson did an extraordinary of capturing historical facts and bringing to life the raw emotions of those who lived through the events. A book you will want to read! Murder on the Moor

Deering, Julianna

I enjoy nothing more than a good clean mystery. Ms. Deering certainly delivered! I can’t wait to read more of her books this was my first! The married amateur detective duo of Drew and Madeline brought to mind the old classic movies of Nick and Nora, whose films were made in the 1930’s, the same era as the book’s setting. The couple is called to an old school chums estate in the English Moors to help him solve 2 murders that there could possibly be no motive; the vicar and a poor elderly woman. Also because his bride of less than a year has been hearing things and feels she is being followed His friend Beaky Bloodworth would be what you would call a geek or a nerd during their school days, the victim of constant bullying. Not only has Beaky done quite well for himself but is married to an absolutely beautiful woman, so much so her reasons for marrying look suspicious. Not to mention her attitude toward her husband, Definitely not that of a gushing newlywed. The author’s descriptiveness of the characters, their personality and physical characteristics were so fantastic, I felt I had a snap shot of them in hand. Beaky’s name gave me a chuckle as it fit his thin, hawkish appearance. She beautifully captured the interactions between the individuals on all levels. I loved Drew and Madeline’s sweet and loving relationship. Not gushy but as a good, caring marriage would be. It didn’t stop there she painted a word picture of the homes, stores, pub, and especially the moors. I found the latter quite depressing, and gloomy. A perfect location for solving a crime! The book kept me on edge. Lots of surprises. Every time I thought I had the murderer cornered in my mind another person would appear equally as guilty! It wasn’t until the very end the criminal is revealed and I wasn’t right on any counts! What a surprise! Just the way I like a whodunit! A book you will want to read! Naomi's Hope

, July 02, 2017
Naomi Schrock and her family decided to move west to Pleasant Plain. It is the 1840’s so wagons are the mode of transportation; difficult and with danger always lurking around the bend. On their journey they came across a horrendous scene. A family’s home had been utterly destroyed and the only survivor was a small boy, Davey. The family took him in and their daughter Naomi adopted him as her own. In this book they have arrived at their destination and have been there 3 years. At seven years of age Davey is a lively, high spirited boy that gives Naomi a run for her money! The new Amish settlement is prospering and many other families are coming to make it their home also. One of those people was a widower Cap Stolzfus. Still grieving over the loss of his wife and baby he is resolved to make a fresh start. His farm is beside Naomi’s parents. Davey meets Cap in one of times of exploration and they become fast friends. The young boy longing for a Dad and family decides to make believe Cap his father. As little ones will, he brings Naomi, her family, and Cap together as they become dear friends. Romance begins to blossom but both have doubts and concerns, not to mention their disagreement in how Davey should be raised. An old acquaintance of Cap’s arrives at the settlement wanting to become a second minister. He presents himself as a man of the cloth, but is a sheep in wolves clothing. Cap knows Shem Fischer will be trouble and that is exactly what he brings to the peaceful community, especially Naomi. The book is very exciting and fast paced. Not your usual Amish novel with mild conflicts and struggles. I liked that it shows a different side of the Amish life especially during that era. Davey’s antics and escapades were spot for a rambunctious boy that age. My heart went out to Naomi for trying to deal with his nonstop mischief. I liked it that the author fleshed out many characters with their own outlooks and experiences, but it was not hard to keep them straight. It added to the realism and entertainment of the story. I appreciated the fact that the characters lived out their faith and biblical principles no matter what hardships or problems they faced. A read alone book from the 1st two in the trilogy, but you definitely want to read the others! I received this book from Revell Publications in exchange for an honest review. Freedom's Price

Imagine you are 23 years old, your mother has died and now your father. In the 1850’s there are not many options for you to support yourself, other than a life of drudgery or a marriage of convenience. This is what Catherine Haynes was facing. Neither had she wanted. With great courage and faith in God, she leaves her home in England and faces a difficult journey to America. There in Louisiana she plans to find her mother’s family and the plantation where she once lived. Even though they do not even know of her existence she hopes to claim her inheritance in the Black Oak Plantation. As if overwhelming grief and loss of all she held dear were not enough she finds herself shipwrecked. In this tragic situation, sailor Tom Worthington enters her life. Although their relationship mixes as well as oil and water, he becomes an important part of her life. Upon her arrival she finds the plantation her mother shared such love of in a horrible state of deterioration and neglect. To make matters worse, it has fallen under the management of an evil, dishonest man and the family she hoped for is gone. She is appalled at the cruel and inhuman treatment of the slaves. This was Pre-Civil War era so her ideas of equality for all men were very foreign at that time. Catherine soon finds herself thrown in to danger and mystery. This was a hard book to put down, a real page turner!!! There were times I realized I was tensed up wondering what would happen next! I loved the way the author showed the characters trust and reliance on God no matter how seemly impossible their circumstances were. The historical information was well researched and gave a clear picture of Louisiana in this era. I found this extremely interesting. An extremely captivating historical romance. Thank you Ms. Johnson for another very entertaining book! I received this book from Revell Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own. .

A Stolen Heart

A Christian, crime, mystery, romance, historical novel, who would think it could be done!? Author Amanda Cabot did and she has succeeded with this wonderful novel! The author really showcased her writing skills with this new book! Poor Lydia Crawford uproots herself from her New York home, quits her job as a school teacher, and heads to Texas to meet the love of her life, finance, Edgar. Upon arriving with engagement ring in hand, not only does she find that Mr. Right has disappeared but has also left behind a pregnant wife! In the face of the shock and pain of this betrayal, she also finds that even though the civil war has been over for 15 years, the hostility of the town people toward Yankees had not abated. Little did she know the handsome and very helpful sheriff, Travis, who meets her at the stagecoach, was going to be her protector and new romance? As the story progresses you see how perfectly matched they were to each other, both, kind, giving and caring people. He senses her dilemma and immediately finds her a place to stay and work with his great Aunt Bertha. Aunt Bertha is rich, and has strong influence. Someone the residents dare not cross. This gives Lydia protection from the cruelty and acceptance in the community. An added blessing is the closeness the two quickly develop. Lydia is a strong woman of faith. She trusts God and believes she was brought her to here for His purpose, but she has no idea what that is. Though the town is small it harbors many mysteries and Lydia aims to discover them. Soon after her arrival a string of minor crimes begin to occur. She teams up with Travis to get to the bottom of it. The characters were well fleshed out and delightful. You feel as if you knew them personally. The descriptions of the town and activities of the characters were vivid. I like feeling as if I am there and a part of the story. The plot was entertaining and intriguing. You will be kept guessing! A great book. I was very happy to see that this is a trilogy so more books are to come! Innkeeper of Ivy Hill

I know when I open one of Ms. Klassen’s books I can be sure I am in for a good read! This novel is proof again! The setting is Wiltshire, England, 1820. Jane was suddenly widowed a year ago when her husband was in an accident. He ran a family inn named, the Bell. She had no part in the business but thanks to the laws, suddenly finds herself proprietor and owner. She knows nothing about running such an establishment and has no desire to. The Inn means everything to her mother-in-law, Thora Bell, as it belonged to her parents. Thora moves back to the Bell in hopes of helping out. To make a sticky situation even worse, Thora has never really liked her daughter-in-law. Her brother-in-law, Patrick, also resides there and has his own agenda for the Bell. The inn is in great need of repairs and deep in debt. At first she feels she has no choice but to manage the inn has she has no other means of income. Later she realizes that is about more than just her, and the success of it affects many lives. I overwhelmed for Jane in all she had to learn and do. I found it very interesting the workings and running such a business in that era, it was hard! Definitely not like our Holiday Inns now! She sets goals to bring new life to the business but not without opposition from some. Without finances this certainly seems impossible. I admired Jane’s perseverance even in the face of resistance and insurmountable odds. There are mysteries concerning her husband’s death she wants to solve in addition to her mounting responsibilities. The book has a wonderful cast of complex characters that the author brings to life in detail and personality. This makes it a very in-depth story. There are many surprises, twists and turns on different levels and within each characters life. I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next sequel. I was provided a review copy of this book by Bethany House Publishers, with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I couldn’t wait to read this book! I hate child trafficking and love to read about rescues and the new lives they receive. The first chapter started off with a bang! I devoured it as my interest was strong and couldn’t wait to read more. Then that was it. I was so disappointed. It wasn’t until the end of the book once again a part was told of one girl’s story that ended in suicide. Very little of the book is about these precious little souls. The majority of it is about the author’s childhood, and life leading her to her ministry. Not what I was hoping to read. I could understand her sharing her testimony, but to make it the focus of the book made for me, the title misleading. She also jumped around a lot about visions and dreams she had as she was being led into her life service. I am a Christian but this type of supernatural events made me feel uncomfortable. This book is definitely not what I was expecting. I was provided a review copy of this book by Chosen Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, with no expectation of a positive review. A group of Amish from Germany undertake the long and difficult journey to Pennsylvania under the leadership of Jacob Bauer. He had been before them and claimed land to start the new community. They were a small group and the only one that spoke English was Anna. While on the ship they discover the Bauer’s son that was lost many years ago, now a grown man. He was also Anna’s sweetheart. While the group stays back in Philadelphia to sort out legal matters, Jacob insists on going head to the land with his wife with instructions on how to find him. Unknown to his congregation, he becomes seriously ill along the way and is taken in by another religious group called the Ephrata Community. The group is struggling without leadership, when a newcomer appears on the scene and asks to join their group. He appears to be just what they need. His charm, wisdom, knowledge of scripture and the land impress the people. He begins to help and guide the people. Thinking Jacob is dead they begin to turn to him. I loved the characters!!! Anna’s displayed faith and steadfastness.. Bairn their reunited son taught such a strong lesson in making hasty decisions and not taking time to see what one really wants. His little brother Felix was a hoot. I laughed at his escapades and all the trouble he innocently found himself it. His curiosity and reasoning for his actions let you into the mind of an 8 year old boy. I love Dorothy, Jacobs’s wife. Her gentle and loving spirit, not to mention her courage as she found herself in a totally new environment and religion while facing her husband’s death, was inspiring. The newcomer was certainly mysterious and seemed to be an incredible man, but things may not be as they appear. This was a fantastic book. I received this book from Revell Publishing. How incredibly easy it is to see the faults of our own family, overlooking the blessings. Equally simple is see only the good things of another family and be blinded to the problems. The source of this is discontentment. That is exactly where Leona Speicher finds herself. Her heart yearns for her family to be like her best friend’s Gloria Gingrich: Fun, affectionate, and close. She idolizes them and fantasizes about becoming a permanent household member. To make the situation even more ideal, Leona and Gloria are as close as best friends can be. Her heart is broken when the Gingrich family is shunned from the Amish church, disappearing in the night without even saying goodbye. Leona never quits missing her friend and mourns her absence for 3 long years. Out of the blue Gloria reaches out to her begging her to come for a visit. The family has abandoned their Amish faith and turned English. Leona wrestles whether or not to go. She still loves her friend deeply but isn’t sure not only what to expect but also putting herself in the English world. With the purpose of trying to bring back with her and become Amish again she decides to go. The trip turns out to be more than the rescue mission she had anticipated. She is shocked and disheartened by what she finds not only Gingrich’s lives now but what they had been all along. A beautiful story of love, true friendship, and learning to see the wonderful gifts God has given us. I received this book Bethany House Publishing and was not required to give a positive review. Cheaters Never Prosper: Volume 4
by
Julia Cook

, January 10, 2017
This book addresses a much needed subject with children – CHEATING! Not just in school but anywhere. As with all her books the subject is presented in a fun, interesting way that children can relate to. Great illustrations and the story written in rhyme are wonderful attention grabbers. Some children don’t know cheating is wrong; others do and use it as an easy way to get the rewards or avoid unpleasant consequences. The sad thing is if a child cheats they will grow into an adult that does. Once someone cheats in one area it will spread to other areas of their lives. That is why I am so pleased to see Ms. Cook’s book on this subject so children can learn early. Noodle has fallen into the cheating trap already in many parts of his young life. He doesn’t see anything wrong with it and uses the dishonesty of others as an excuse (sound familiar). I love what his mother says, “You can’t control what others do, Noodle, but cheating is a HUGE deal to you!” Mom covers the many reasons people may choose to cheat and how easy it is to continue doing it once you start. She shows beyond a doubt that cheating is NEVER the answer. Noodle and Mom discuss ways he can break this bad habit and make things right with those he has wrong. At the end of the book she shares 11 tips to help a child stop cheating. All are very insightful and helpful! This book is a part of Ms. Cook’s “Responsible Me” Series. A great way to help children build character!

Mattie's Pledge

I always pictured the Amish as staying in one place. The Schrock family has decided to move to Indiana from Pennsylvania for he better farmland at good prices is the lure. Plus an Amish community has already been started there. Mattie is excited to go. She has had a wanderlust to have adventure. Jacob Yoder knew Mattie from when they lived in the same community. She has always had a part of his heart. Mattie finds herself drawn to Jacob too, but struggles with becoming the typical Amish wife. Faith, family, and the simple lifestyle are ingrained in her, but her youthfulness finds many temptations. One such temptation is a dark haired, wicked thief, one of three brothers that continue to follow them to steal their horses. The story gives explicit details of the life and hardships of wagon travel in the 1840’s. Their strong faith was their driving force and they never questioned or wavered. This would explain their success against some insurmountable odds. The novel brought to light spiritual struggles we face today. One was Mattie’s discontentment with what they Lord had provided. Her unhappiness had nothing to do with her situation or others, but within herself. A highlight for me was seeing true forgiveness. The entire Amish group not only forgave them men that tried to harm with and steal, but helped them when they were in need. This book was exciting, historically educational, and very entertaining! This Road We Traveled

Tabitha Brown lived during the 1840’s and became known as the Mother of Oregon. She founded the Oregon Orphans’ Asylum and School at Tualatin Plains. She was a widowed pastor’s wife, a spunky, outspoken, independent woman. When her family decides to move to Oregon from Missouri, her son announces it is best for to stay behind! He cites her age, 65, and a lame leg that makes it difficult to get around. She is hurt and stunned. With her usual determination she buys her own wagon, supplies and animals, announcing she is going. The trip is treacherous and dangerous, testing her in ways she had never been challenged. In the 1840’s such trips were trying even for the young. Not only did she face every peril, but actually helped her family in different crisis’s. I related to Tabitha in several ways. I am in my 60’s also a widowed pastor’s wife. How would I feel if my children announced they were all moving away and leaving me behind? What if I lived in that era and the trip would not mean jumping in a car and being there in a few hours. Would I have the courage and strength? Her strong faith in God is what carried her. I admired that as with all the discomfort, opposition, and hazards she faced it showed she had true trust in God. No matter how difficult the experiences were, she continued to think of and care for others. What an inspiring woman! Six stars to Ms. Kirkpatrick for another outstanding book! To be honest I am not a fan of western novels but I thought would give this one a try and I am so glad I did! I thoroughly enjoyed it! This is also the first time I have read one of Ms. Connealy’s books. Yes, it was an action packed western, but I was delighted to see it also a romance, a mystery, filled with danger and suspense, but my biggest surprise was the wonderful humor throughout the book! Chance Bowden was a wealthy and powerful man. His children are grown and all have left the ranch except one. The other two have pursued careers they love away from the family empire. Chance is unexpectedly seriously injured in an avalanche. Before he is taken to Denver for treatment to save his live he calls his children, Cole, Justin, and Sadie, to his bedside and delivers a surprising ultimatum. They must all agree to live together on the ranch for a year or lose their inheritance ( a quite substantial one) to a cousin the detest. They grudgingly agree. Hired hand, Health Kincaid stands by them. His wisdom and skills become invaluable to the siblings when serious trouble begins to emerge. Much to her brother’s disapproval Sadie begins to see him as more than an employee. Little did they know when they agreed to their father’s demands how much danger they would face and what hidden family secrets they would uncover. A very exciting and entertaining book! I look forward to reading more by Ms. Connealy! I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers

Lucinda Curtis didn’t have a typical upbringing. Her Dad was a con-artist and employed her as part of his devious escapades. It is all she has ever known until one day she gets word he is dead. She finds herself penniless and homeless. Her only option to go to her uncle’s house in West Point, New York. He cut all ties with her mother when she married her father. Their reception of her is not quite welcoming, but they allow her to stay. Lucinda does her best to fit in and tries to turn around from her dishonest ways. She meets Seth Westcott a cadet at West Point. He is everything she has never been, upstanding, hardworking, and honest. He captures her heart but she feels she is not worthy of him. Seth wants to go home and help his sister who has been swindled out of the family farm but the military will not give him permission. He decides to cast aside his good grades, perfect conduct and become a “bad” boy with the help of some not so upstanding cadets so he will be discharged. This pre-Civil war historical novel is great. I love the characters, so many different personalities, and attitudes! Learning about the life of the cadets and some of the antics that went on was extremely interesting. There are lots of unexpected twists and surprises! The author beautifully shows how complete God’s forgiveness is and not matter how bad your past, He always has a new beginning! .I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers.

That Rule Doesn't Apply to Me: Volume 3

, November 13, 2016
Most kids hate rules! They put restrictions and guidelines on them that require obedience and self-control. Noodle shares their feelings and as usual he has oodles of attitude about following them. He resolves this issue by deciding most of them don’t apply to him! Noodle goes through a mental list of a few rules in his life and decides they all “STINK”! At school when confronted for breaking a rule he explains why he is exempt from it. He is continually being called down his teacher which only annoys him more. One day his teacher gives an assignment to write a poem for homework. Noodle decides write one entitled “Rules Stink”. In rhyme (just as the teacher assigned) he proceeds to prove his point. His Mom isn’t very impressed with his poetry. She talks to him about how rules are there to help him and without them life would really STINK. Finally understanding the importance of these guidelines, he rewrites his poem. It sounds the same but there is a surprise ending! Following rules is a major part of life. Children need to learn this at a very young age because adulthood has even more rules to follow! This delightful fun book gets the point across in the special way only Ms. Cook can reach them. At the end of the book the author shares 10 tips to teach children to follow rules. They are excellent!

I Just Dont Like the Sound of No My Story about Accepting No for an Answer & Disagreeing the Right Way

I don’t know of a child that likes to be told “no”. When children argue most parents argue back, reason, ignore, bribe, give in or lose patience. None of those are a good outcomes for either parent or child. earn to respond correctly when told no. This is a win-win situation for everyone and lays an important foundation for years to come. R.J. hates to be told, ”No”. Everything is battle, does that sound familiar? His teacher has had enough of his backtalk and disputing what she says. She encourages him to become a member of the “Say Yes to No Club.” He is intrigued and wants to know what he must do. The teacher tells him at two things: accept “no” for an answer, and disagree in the right way. She outlines four very simple steps for each one. I loved these and believe every home needs this club! R.J. wanting to be a member of the club begins to apply what he has learned not only at school but also at home. His parents are in shock at first but very pleased! As the story unfolds children are shown how to implement these ideas. Not only will they be happier, but it will prevent conflicts with parents and teachers. Special words are emphasized in color and a larger font. My granddaughter really liked this in the author’s books. At the end of the book are tips to deal with kids that don’t like the sound of “no”! Every home and classroom needs this book! I love these books!!

Making your own household cleaners is all the rage right now and rightfully so. The benefits include protecting the environment, your family’s health from harsh chemicals, and financial savings. I have definitely hopped on this band wagon! All across the internet are recipes for every type of cleaner imaginable. I have been faithfully copying, pasting, and saving the recipes in my documents. And there they sit, to be edited, re-fonted and printed to put in a special binder. You guessed it I haven’t done it yet. The thought of all that work stops me cold. I was excited to see this book! Now I have all the recipes in one book and easy to access! They have thought of everything you can imagine and some you haven’t! The recipes cover every room in the house, laundry, yard, outdoors, and more. I was impressed with how few ingredients you need to mix so many different cleaners and most you will have on hand or can easily find. A great book! God Made You Just Right

I strongly believe a child is never too young to be introduced to reading and books. It will create a life time love of both and open the door to so many adventures and opportunities to learn. Not just any books are acceptable, but wholesome, quality ones. This book is perfect! It is a sturdy, washable board book that a little one can call their own and hold up to budding bookworms. Today even the youngest children are made to feel self-conscious about themselves and it only grows worse as they get older. Through media, friends, and even unintentional examples of parents and older siblings, they begin to struggle with self-acceptance. I very much liked how this book focuses on the fact that God is our basis of self-worth. As the title says, He made us “just right”. The sweet story covers all the bases; ability, size, physical features, aptitude, sense of humor, creativeness, and uniqueness in every area! Illustrations are excellent, depicting activities children participate in and enjoy. I love the way the author sums it all up with the most important point of all, “You may not be like other kids- that’s not your job at all.” An encouraging and uplifting book for little hearts! I know I need to exercise more and I want to. I can’t afford the gym and going takes valuable minutes out of an already busy day. Exercise videos are great too, but again, I have to set aside time. Where extra time is concerned I have trouble being motivated on top of my regular lack of motivation! What’s a girl to do? This book was the answer to my problem! It incorporates exercise into tasks I am already doing!! A win win solution! The exercise illustrations are great and even a bit humorous. The book is divided into areas of daily routine we all do: the bathroom, (yes you can sit on the toilet and exercise! Genius!) shopping, cleaning, driving, at the office, in the kitchen, on the couch, and in the bedroom. The small size of the book makes it easy to carry it with you from room to room. This won’t prepare me to enter a fitness pageant, but I be getting into better shape. I see once these workouts and everyday activities become a habit, my fitness level will increase. I believe success and feeling better will motivate me to do more, maybe some exercise videos. You never know, I might even save up and go some classes at the gym! Busy, Busy!

I love board books for toddlers! Their sturdy pages and washable surface make it a great introduction for little ones to enter the world of reading. The book is their own to explore and enjoy without any restrictions. I appreciated that this book has 20 pages instead of the average of only 12 most offer. That’s more to see and enjoy! Each page has a colorful illustration of a different animal smiling as they do their job. This also helps a child see the “work” each animal does that is unique to its species. This adds learning to the fun! We live in a day and age of constant busyness. Children, with no concept of responsibility, have difficulty understanding why adults have so much to do. Ms. Spinelli’s book shows children that everyone has lots to do, even the animals. Yet no matter how full the schedule the child is still important and there is always time for them. A very sweet book with a very important message: Children are always important! I received this book free from Worthy Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The Midwife's Dilemma

I was sad to see this was the last book in the At Home in Trinity series. I have enjoyed all of them. As I read it, I couldn’t help but think about when I met Martha in the first book, The Midwife’s Tale. It was like thinking back on the life of a friend. Midwife Cade has faced many changes in the three books. She is a middle aged widow and these new chapters in her life hold true for women even now: children becoming adults, letting go of control in their lives and ours, realizing we cannot keep up our youthful pace, confronting new decisions about the future, and most of all accepting the time of life we are in. There were moments I became aggravated at the Martha for her overbearing, bossy attitude toward others. Then I realized taking control of situations was just part of her calling as midwife spilling over into other relationships. I admired her for waiting on God’s guidance in the choices set before her, and I could relate to how much harder those are later in years. A lesson that ran throughout the book was how God provides for us even before the need arises. I experience this in my life as a widow. I continued to enjoy the fascinating facts about medicine and midwifery during that era. Ms. Parr’s solid characters and wonderful sense of humor made this another great book. I loved the ending!! Childhood best friends, that was the way it was supposed to stay as they grew older, but the heart doesn’t listen to reason where love is involved. Zane and Lila lifelong friendship turned into a deep love and respect.Their families have always been close and supportive of one another too, despite the fact that Lila’s family is devout Amish and Zane’s are not. Lila is torn. She could never leave her faith and her father and siblings depend on since her mother is gone. Yet she knows there is no way she can marry the Amish boy her father has decided is the one for her. Zane decides to share his true feelings and the possibility of them being married. The attempt blows up in his face when Lila tells him to leave and not come back! In a burst of youthful foolishness he joins the Army! He is sent to Afghanistan and she fears he may not come back alive and it would be her fault. I loved the depth to all the characters and how the author expressed their myriad of thoughts and feelings. There was so much going on in their lives and minds! Lila’s had such a heavy burden of responsibilities and dealing with her family member’s personalities and issues. Ms. Gould made Zane’s experiences and emotions come to life in the book. I found myself wanting it to work for them, but wondering is it possible? A very different love story!I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. I Want to Be the Only Dog!: Volume 6

Ahh sibling rivalry, the scourge of every home with more than one child. The cause is unknown but the repercussions are most strongly felt. Growing up as an only child, I could not understand my friends’ discontent with their siblings. I would love to have a brother or sister. . . . Or so I thought. In a lighthearted and amusing way Ms. Cook helps children see the blessing of having their brothers and sisters. I know I didn’t like being the “only dog”. Three dogs are the “siblings” in the story. Angus is the oldest, Chihuahua, followed by Jake a dachshund and Kirby, the baby girl and also a Chihuahua. Each fur family member shares their frustrations about the others and tells why it would be better if they were the only one. All the complaints are what are commonly heard from human counterparts. The fussing and fighting reaches a peak and the “skin” mommy (owner) calls a halt to it. She begins to share the important points children usually overlook as to the blessings of not being alone. The illustrations are super cute. I read the book to a 4 year old and she wanted to linger over each page discussing every detail in the pictures.

I first heard about oil pulling a couple of years ago. It sounded somewhat off the wall, but the more I read about it, the more it made sense. I took the plunge and for a short time began oil pulling myself. I did see many positive results. I researched information that might help me. This book is exactly what I needed! From it I learned the history of oil pulling. Even though this is obviously not rocket science, the essentials of this centuries old practice are covered and answers to common questions that arise. Also discussed are the oral and health benefits many experience from this simple wellness routine. The book covers the different types of oil you can use and how to choose one. I especially liked the chapter which discussed including different essential oils in your regime and their benefits. The last chapter was particularly of interest to me, “Working Oil Pulling into Your Life.” I found numerous tips and solutions to challenges you might face along the way.If you haven’t tried this yet, you should. What do you have to lose? I highly recommend this book. It was concise and easy to read. If you want to learn about oil pulling and get started, this is the book you need! Armed with more information, I am excited and ready to start again! I received this book from Ulysses Press in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have stated are my own.

I learned about this book through an online widow’s support group. Of all the books I have read by widows since my husband died, Ms. Dettmann’s is the most honest. I appreciate her sharing her experiences with no sugar coating. Other books I read shared the emotional trauma in generality, but not the details as this author did. Most didn’t share the physical aspects of deep grief and loss, but Diane did. There was a point in my grief journey I thought there must be something terribly wrong with me. My emotional state was much rawer and intense than what others shared. None talked in detail about the physical and mental toll the loss takes. I honestly thought was had some horrible disease or was mentally losing it. The book is skillfully written not only in its presentation but also in clearly expressing such a raw, vulnerable, intensely personal time. A standing ovation for Diane Dettmann and her courage, for not only being so transparent, but have the courage to revisit such a painful time by writing this book. It was a comfort and encouragement. Thank you! I received this book free from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. All the opinions I expressed were my own.

Called to Pray

The power of prayer has such a far reaching influence, yet it is one of the most overlooked resources in a Christian’s life. How many times have you felt the prompting to pray for a person or situation and ignore it? What blessing or need went unfulfilled because you didn’t? This book will certainly make you think about those times and being obedient to urging of the Holy Spirit. I found this book very encouraging, as it reminded me once again of how God is always watching over and caring for us. I found it inspiring and exciting to see how He uses our prayers to bring about wonderful and amazing events. These are true stories of how the Lord guided others to pray unbeknownst to them how important that prayer was to the care and protection of the person He brought to mind. This book is such a blessing. It made me happy to read the stories of God’s miraculous provision, and to always remember He does the same for me. Keeping Christmas

The subject of this book is one that is very unique and that I have not seen addressed before: the empty nest and holiday traditions. Her whole life has been her family, and holidays are especially meaningful since the have all married and moved away. Due to finances none were able to be there for Thanksgiving and called to say they won’t make it Christmas either. Judith falls into a deep depression and feels there is no reason to keep any of the family traditions with no children or grandchildren coming. Her husband Stan does everything he can think of to cheer her up. Nothing works. He tries to recreate their old traditions together, but that just seems to stir more pain. At first I got really aggravated with Judith for being so selfish and having a pity party. Then as I continued to read, I realized we don’t always choose depression and sometimes it is hard to find our way out. I guess I was aggravated because she had her husband with her still, and mine died 2 years ago. Stan doesn’t become irritated with her for her attitude. Quite the contrary he is very concerned and wants to help. You will be surprised at the courage he shows and the sacrifice he makes to make his wife happy. A remarkable book! Her Restless Heart: A Woman's Longing for Love and Acceptance
by
Barbara Cameron

I wasn’t sure about combining excerpts from a novel with a Bible study. I have to admit I was even a little leery it might be a little bit sacrilegious. After reading this book I can honestly say it is a quality Bible study. It is the best of both worlds combining a study of God’s word and a Christian novel. I have read the questions at the end of many Christian fiction books and while they are great for group discussions, they are do not compare with this study. For years I have found spiritual lessons in many Christian novels I have read. I even sat up a file in Word where I type in the sentences or paragraphs that spoke to me and then added what spiritual truth I learned. This goes even deeper! Before receiving this Bible study, I had not read the book the excerpts come from. I can truthfully say it did not affect my experience or hinder me in the study. I do believe if I had read the book, it would have further enhanced the story. While I enjoy Bible studies of all types, this one was, well what can I say, fun. The beginning of the book shares a summary of the story, character sketches of the people, and a glossary of Amish words used, and their meanings. The book is divided in to a 6 week study, with 5 days of lessons for each week. Each week begins with a Scripture or Scriptures for that week. This not only prepares your for the heart for the lesson, but also could be used to memorize. Next is a paragraph named, “Setting the Stage” which tells you what the main idea of the lesson for the week will be. Then there is the excerpt from a chapter in the book, usually about 2 or 3 pages long. At the beginning of the daily lesson there is a verse to read. I personally like to read the entire chapter the verse is in. Following that is the “Reflect and Respond” section. This introduces concepts and ideas about the lesson. Thought provoking questions and lots of scripture references follow. I find that VERY important in a good study of the Word. The lesson ends with a prayer and a suggestion to apply what you have learned to your life. The lessons were just the right length and very interesting. I also appreciated in the margins of some pages there were key ideas printed. As an added bonus at the end of the book the author shares Amish recipes! A delightful and enlightening study that would be great for individuals or groups. I believe this is book is paving the way for a new type of Bible study, where the pleasure of reading Christian fiction can also be a part of spiritual growth. I received this book free from Abingdon Press. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

As if making all the public appearances and working on her candy recipe isn’t enough, things get even more complicated for Lucy when she meets Charlie (not knowing who he is) and finds herself falling in love with him. Charlie’s feelings match hers. That is until Lucy finds out whom he really is! Lucy goes into full blown attack mode to save their company. Charlie not wanting to comply but desiring his father’s praise, does everything he can to stop her every effort. The ensuing battle is hilarious, with each one trying to outmaneuver the other. All along, they are fighting the strong attraction for one another and growing more frustrated by the moment. While this book is a wonderfully entertaining, filled with romance and a lots of humor; it offers much more. Historically I was able to see a blossoming, and rapidly changing era. Ms. Mitchell allowed me to see the early 20th century through the eyes of both the wealthy and the poor. It held a surprising reminder of the great gulf that lay between the two social groups during that time. The conditions in the factories and the child labor was appalling enough without realzing how some business owners had no compassion or concern for their workers, especially the children. As the story unfolds I saw Lucy and Charlie mature and grow as young adults; each one being forced to harshly examine their self. They faced their character flaws and faults, but most importantly desired to change. Lucy was a beautiful example of how we can become so focused on our desires we can sacrifice our values and end up making impulsive and sinful choices all in the name of ‘winning”. Charlie reveals that our past does not define who we are in the present, and we must not only seek God’s forgiveness but also forgive ourselves. You will laugh, cry and even feel angry at the escapades of Lucy and Charlie. The book is 391 pages but you will find it difficult to put it down, and when you come to the end, you will be wishing for more! A very good book. I received this book free from Bethany House Publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Outrageous Courage: What God Can Do with Raw Obedience and Radical Faith

The title of the book certainly lives up to how Tracy Evan’s has lived her life after becoming a Christian. The courage she displays in her Christian walk is the kind that all of us would love to have. Nothing held back, no doubts or fears entertained, no questioning His plan, just totally trusting and obeying God in all ways. I would love to have that kind of courage. Having had a rough start in life, you wouldn’t think Tracy would have come to such a place of total commitment and service to God. Her story is proof God can use anyone, no matter what their back ground, if only they are willing. He will polish the rough edges in His time and way. Growing up in a dysfunctional family and her father in prison, Tracy took the path of most youth in that situation; one of rebellion, anger, hatred, and violence. She ran away and joined the army where she found Christ through a fellow solider. She then obtained her degree as a physician’s assistant and trained at Stanford University. She has served in 64 nations over the past 30 years and is serving to this day. Her “radical faith” and “outrageous courage” have brought her face to face with death, unbelievable hardship, debilitating illnesses in a shack in the Philippines, heart wrenching suffering of those she worked to minister to. In all of this she did not panic or turn away from what she believed was her calling. Through these frightening situations or only thought was reaching others for Christ and following the Lord’s direction. While Tracy and I do not share the same beliefs, and I found myself questioning the legitimacy some of her accounts, there is no questioning the testimony of her zeal and commitment to following Christ and spreading the Gospel. Something we could all use more of. This is a very interesting book. I received this book free from Baker Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review. This the first book of Ms. Cosgrove’s I have read. I have never seen a Christian fiction novel dealing with the subject of middle age and all the new struggles that come with it: aging, empty nest, insecurities about personal value, appearance, and starting a new chapter of marriage without children. While I have not experienced some of the issues her character Christina did, the author was very accurate in describing the emotions and confusion that goes with this time of life. I still enjoy the books about young women stepping into the prime of life, but I found it refreshing to read about the years to come. This is a great read for those facing that time, but would be good also for those who have yet to experience it. Christina was close approaching her 50th birthday, and her only son had recently moved out. After years of nurturing and focusing on her son, she was suddenly left in limbo. The reality of how her marriage had shifted after years of putting all her energies into raising her son and caring for her home and family, hit home in a hard way. Who was this man she was left with? She didn’t know him, nor did he seem to know her. She could remember the handsome young guy she fell head over hills in love with, but the one that lived with her wasn’t him anymore Too make matters worse she had lost both her parents a few years back. She felt so alone. The curtain has dropped and she glaringly sees what her life has become, and in some ways only what she perceives it to be. After what she terms a “non-fight” with her husband Jeff that morning, she allows her menopausal emotions to run way, calls in sick to work and on impulse takes off to her parents old summer cottage miles away. Stranded there by unexpected flooding and taking refuge in the home of two seniors she knew as a child, she is reunited with her old boyfriend, their son, who is visiting. (Don’t worry, no adulterous affair happens.) Sitting in the old cottage, surrounded memories she is able to do some real soul searching and crying. There she feels the Lord speaking to her about her life. She decides then and there she is going to make big changes in herself, her attitude, and her marriage. Of course decisions like these never come without being tested. I liked the fact the story dealt with real life feelings and obstacles. This helped me relate even more to the characters. The title is so appropriate. As with most women their early years are focused on raising a family and all the responsibilities that go with it. The change was so gradual she didn't realize she had become focused on how she expected things to be; focused on how she felt her husband should be, focused on what her needs were in the marriage, focused on what others thought of her, focused on taking care of others and neglecting herself, and in all this focusing, she forgot to focus on God. Mixed in were all the misunderstandings that go along with a couple that has quit communicating. This is real life! There are surprises and lots of wonderful humor along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Ms. Cosgrove did a brilliant job of genuinely portraying this time of life we must all face. I look forward to reading more of her books!

Deeply Loved: 40 Ways in 40 Days to Experience the Heart of Jesus

So many devotional books are . . . well rather mundane and dry. When I started this one, I wasn’t expecting much more than just a daily essay and a scripture to read. I was blown away! Yes it has devotions and scriptures but it is much more. I have to say it is one of the most powerful devotional books I have read. It isn’t so much the concepts that are covered; I was familiar with many of them. What makes it so unique is HOW Ms. Kent presents them and the wonderful suggestions she shares to apply them to your life! Shortly after I started reading the book I got very sick for 3 weeks, and didn’t do much but rest. This book was such a blessing! I read, I studied, and even in my depleted state I was able to do the daily “Presence Practice” suggested at the end day. These weren’t only easy to implement, but they influenced my life in a big way. Each day is written in such a way that the message in it becomes very intimate and personal; as if it was prepared just for me. It lighted a path for me to have an even closer relationship with God and helped me realize where I had drifted away from Him. The personal experiences she shared really helped me connect to the points she was making. I found this book highly inspirational and motivational in seeking a closer relationship with the Lord. Even after I had finished the daily reading, the scriptures and thoughts I read continued to resonate in my heart and mind. My book is highlighted, underlined and has many notes written in it. I plan to read it many more times. Call it a “devotional book” just doesn’t do it justice! An extraordinary book! I received this book free from Abingdon Press. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Do not let the size of this book intimidate you! Even though it is 437 pages, you will be done with it before you realize it and wishing it was twice as long! I read at night and found myself staying up way too long to read “just a little more” until I was drooling on my pillow and the book was slipping out of my hand. This is Ms. Heitzmann’s 3rd book in this series. I have read them all. I feel you can easily read it by itself, but if you do, you will definitely want to read the others! The story was also very fast paced and there are no lulls or dull moments. The author has a talent of describing the settings and the characters so vividly that you just naturally picture them in your mind. Your own personal mental movie! I loved the surprise element. Every time I thought I had the next twist in the plot figured out, the story would go in a totally different direction. Morgan Spencer is wealthy, handsome, and after 2 years still deeply grieving the sudden loss of his wife. The only thing to keep him going is his 2 year old daughter Livie. His brother Rick and his wife Noelle have helped him but he feels it is time for him and Livie to create a life of their own. He buys a deceased neighbor’s house to make the transition. Quinn is hired by the neighbor’s daughter to cull through the home and sell whatever is of value, not knowing Morgan has purchased it as is. Morgan and she are thrown together when he makes a surprise visit to inspect his new home. Meeting her stirs feelings in Morgan he never thought he would have again. Surprisingly his daughter is quite taken with her too. Quinn has lived the last four years in fear and hiding. Her testimony sent a very wicked man to jail. She finds out he is out of prison and looking for her to seek revenge. When Morgan learns of her need for anonymity and protection, he impulsively proposes marriage, strictly business of course. She will remain safe and he will have someone to take care of his child. No strings attached. Neither of them are prepared for what is to come. Both must learn to hope and love again, letting go of their pain from the past. As problems arise, Morgan finds his faith in God and biblical truths to come alive as Quinn struggles to trust God and others again. This is beautiful story of unexpected love, healing, and learning to let go of the past. Add to all this, the romance, suspense and mystery and you have a fantastic book! You will want to read this one! I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

After reading the Digest Diet, I looked forward to seeing the cookbook. One of my first concerns was were there any repeated recipes in the new cookbook that the Digest Diet shared. I am happy to say there is not! There are 150 new recipes to help on your 21 day diet! The first part of the book gives reviews the important concepts of the Digest Diet. I liked this I didn’t have to get my Digest Diet book out. One thing that impressed me is these recipes is encourage and explain the need for ‘good’ fats in our diet. I am totally against the non-fat diet craze that has been around for so many years. All the recipes help you to incorporate and use the much needed ‘good’ fats’. Also included in the recipes are the foods 13 foods they refer to as ‘Fat Releasers”. This makes it so easy to prepare meals and eat the foods that are key in your weight loss. Suggestions for stocking your pantry, freezer, and kitchen are made so that you have everything you need to make meal preparation easy. While there are rules, there is also flexibility. There are helpful, multiple brand name suggestions for different foods throughout the book. I thought this was great because it makes finding what you need at the grocery store so easy! I was excited to see pages that help create your own snacks. There was a lot of variety and combinations! For those with allergies there is a table of suitable swaps for foods used in the recipes and also another table of non-dairy sources of calcium. Recipe categories are: Breakfasts Soups Main Dishes Salads Side Dishes Desserts Each category is divided into the phases of the diet: Fat Release, Fade Away, and Finish Strong, This way you can quickly locate the recipes available for the phase you are in. I like that in each and every recipe they listed the Fat Releasers that are in it. Not only for the information, but it also gives you a sense of accomplishment in your diet. Every time you eat you are being proactive in losing weight! I found the special menus included very useful. These menus are: Quick Fix Vegetarian Dairy Free Cooking for One On a Budget. These also are divided into the diet phases. The recipes are varied, tasty, and easy to prepare. The full page color pictures were wonderful in helping me choose what I want to fix. What I find so great and unique about the Digest Diet and Digest Diet Cookbook is how they have done everything to help you succeed in your weight loss goals. A cookbook you will want to own, even if you aren’t dieting and just want to eat healthy! I received this book free from FBS Pulishers. I was not required to write a positive review. Real Life, Real Miracles: True Stories That Will Help You Believe
by
James L. Garlow and Keith Wall

I don’t think anyone hasn’t had a time they prayed or longed or a miracle in their lives. I believe many have experienced them, but don’t recognize what happened because they just chalk it up to luck or chance. Often times we miss them because we are moving at such a fast pace and fail to see God’s touch. In the life of a child of God, there is no such thing as coincidence. He is very actively involved in our lives and needs. This book was so uplifting! I myself had witnessed many miracles in my time and they have been left a deep imprint on my life. Some brought about enormous changes; others met a momentary need in a supernatural way. I could relate because the accounts were of people just like me that find themselves in what seem to be impossible situations with only 1 outcome " BAD. Some experiencing them probably thought these are things that “only happen to other people”. I heard a saying many years ago that stuck with me and I love: “God loves impossible situations to show Himself strong.” Then we KNOW without a doubt the help cold have only come from Him and He can receive all the glory. That is exactly what these stories are about. If God has done it for others, He can do it for us too! I liked that these were so varied from the filling of small momentary needs to nothing short of extraordinary events of healing and protection. They certainly gave me a fresh reminder of hope for some of the circumstances my family is facing right now. It was refreshing to read something positive after all the negative stories and reports we see daily in the news. No, God does not always “fix” all our problems, but even should He say “No child, this is my will for you”, this book gave me great comfort at seeing testimonies of His power. I would love more books by the authors like this, and would also like to contribute stories of my own “real life” miracles! I am going to keep it and read it when I a booster shot of faith I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. All Things New
by
Lynn N Austin
mizroady
, January 09, 2013
Lynn Austin is at the top of my favorite authors! I couldn’t wait to read this book! The Civil War is over and the lives of the wealthy northerners and their slaves are changed forever. Those from the North don’t want to accept it and the slaves don’t know how to accept it. The Weatherly family returns to what is left of their once grand home in Virginia. Eugenia, the matriarch of the family and widowed by the war, plans to continue life as before. She purposes, through sheer strength and determination, to rebuild the life they once had. She has lost one son in the war and looks to her surviving son to return and take his father’s place. Daniel comes home angry and shattered by his experiences in the war. He too cannot accept the defeat and seeks revenge on anyone associated with that loss. He could care less about leading the family. Her 16 year old daughter, Olivia, is spoiled and selfish and is more than happy to comply with her mother’s plans. Twenty-two year old Josephine realizes that their focus must be on surviving the reality of their life now, not reconstructing the past. Although practical in her outlook, she is angry with God for not rewarding her “goodness” and answering her prayers during the war. She has turned away from Him. The only slaves that remain on their plantation are Lizze and Otis and their 3 children. They have no clue how to handle their new found freedom and realize they have no place to go. For the first time, Josephine begins to see them as flesh and blood people with feelings and attempts to treat them as equals. This only enrages her mother more. Josephine and her family face hardships they have never experienced: lack of food, clothing, and money. She begins to understand that this a small taste of the lives their slaves have always lived. The only difference in Lizze and Otis’s life is that they know their children will never be sold or face mistreatment as they did. I was astonished at this historical novel. Ms. Austin was a genius not only in how she presented the historical facts about the Post Civil War era, but also in capturing the personal details and emotions that so many different groups of people faced in its aftermath. I never dreamed of what these people actually dealt with. In many ways the wealthy families coming back were almost as poor as the slaves, but their situations were made worse because they had no skills or knowledge to care for their daily needs and homes. A culture shock confronted them as they were stripped of their money and lavish, snobbish lifestyles. They were broken people with only their self-righteous pride left. The soldiers left as strong, courageous young men only to return shattered emotionally, mentally and some physically. Handicapped individuals then did not have all the medical help and devices to make life easier. Many wished they had died rather than live as a cripple. Some carried the guilt of being alive because their friends died. Then there were the slaves who finally had freedom but had no means or knowledge to embrace it. Their fear of their master’s abuse was replaced with fear being killed by angry ex-slave owners. If they went away, they had no means to support themselves nor any place to go. In staying they are treated with the same disrespect and left with the workload of a household of slaves. This was a very confusing time for them too. Also there were the southerners who fought for the slave’s freedom and wanted to help them in making a new life. They found themselves in danger and hated by the bitter white men of the north for whom they blamed for their losses. On the other hand the slaves feared trusting them because they were white. As if If all this wasn’t remarkable enough, Ms. Austin includes one more very important aspect. In a crisis God is always at work whether we realize it or not. We are either drawn closer to Him or turn away. Not only was I a part of the character’s thoughts and emotions, but she also enabled me to experience their spiritual journey in such a tumultuous time. I will never look at this era the same again. She brought history and the characters alive! This book is a masterpiece you WILL want to read! I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. Unclaimed Legacy: Book 2 in the History Mystery Series
by
Deborah Heal

This was my first book of Ms. Heal’s and I was very impressed to say the least! What a fun book! It has so many different aspects, suspense, mystery, history, social issues, and humor, challenges faced at different stages of life. She blends and weaves all these into a very enjoyable and interesting story! I must say I have never read a fiction book quite like it! I especially liked the interaction between the characters. The humor and conversations made them very real! Some were so clever I even read them to my husband! Abby is a personal tutor to teenager, Merri. They accidently stumble upon a computer program that allows them to go back in time and see the day to day lives of those in past. There are only certain places it will work and it reveals details of those who have lived at that location. A true life version of “If Walls Could Talk”! Something I have always wished I could experience! When they share this information with their friend John and he becomes involved in their exciting adventure. They accept a job house sitting a beautiful Victorian home and looking out for two 85 year old twin sisters next door, Eulah and Beulah. The pair, dubbed the “Old Dears”, is hilarious in their antics and ideas. Very quickly Abby and Merri log into their program and find the house they are staying in was the twin’s childhood home. In fact, they learn more than they are comfortable with about the sister’s past. Through the twist and turn of events and their computer, they are taken back to the time of Lewis and Clark find themselves even witnessing a murder! There were so many times I wished I could grab their laptop and control the program myself. Not to mention take it a few places of my own! Ms. Heal didn’t just include history, she brought it to life with detailed descriptions of not only the daily lives of the people, but also the thoughts and feelings they might have experienced. At points I truly felt “transported” back to that time. She also touched on the important subject of domestic violence. It isn’t just a problem now but has been throughout history too. Something I had not considered. I thought her involvement of the elderly sisters as respected, valued and loved was wonderful. It sends a strong message that our senior citizens and their life experiences are not only important, but also how very enjoyable spending time with them can be. A much needed point to be made in a time with the elderly are neglected and not appreciated and esteemed. Their love and delight in being with the John, Abby, and Merri, reminded me of how many older people are longing to open their hearts and homes to the younger generation. Though not a major part of the book, Merri’s dealings with her mother’s constant working and overlooking her and her father’s neglect and drug abuse shows the effect such parenting failures have on children. So many wonderful things in one book and a surprise ending too! I look forward to reading Ms. Heal’s first book and her future ones! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. I am not required to write a positive review. .
