This is a fascinating compilation of information and technical instruction. It is one of those rare reference books that are actually fun to read. If you have an interest in this field you will not be disappointed, I highly recommend it.

This book was life changing for me. Whether you have read any of Daniel Quinn's other work or not this book is a perfect summary of his core message. You won't look at your life the same way after reading this book.

Out
by
Natsuo Kirino

, December 26, 2013
Out is a tense thriller about a group of friends who band together to dispose of a corpse and the subsequent fallout. Interesting plot twists and a compelling narrative keep the reader's interest and leaves you wanting more. This novel works on many levels. It is a solid crime thriller but also explores gender roles, cultural constraints and fracturing friendships and love lives. It is much more than just a fun read.

House of Holes A Book of Raunch
by
Nicholson Baker
711peterhoffman
, December 24, 2013
A sexual amusement park serves as the backdrop for this funny, strange and sometimes uncomfortable tale. A series of people are led to a resort where you can partake of your deepest desires, for a price. Although the subtitle is "A book of raunch," Nicholson Baker relays these tales with surprising sensitivity. It's like nothing I've ever read before and very entertaining.

Sea of Glass is one of the all time best dystopian future/science fiction novels I've ever read. Dark and intensely moving the narrative is superbly crafted and addictive. A great read for dark winter days.

Lucid Dreaming
by
Stephen LaBerge
711peterhoffman
, December 13, 2013
What could be a more fascinating subject than that we have the ability to be conscious in and control our dreams? This book mixes scientific study data and personal experiences from lucid dreamers to create a very thought provoking read. Not only is subject of lucid dreaming explored in depth but techniques for acquiring the skill for yourself are also included. I appreciated the very factual way this subject was approached, there is no mysticism or spirituality to the way the information is presented. This is a very practical exploration of a subject that is extraordinary, and potentially life changing.

At the Mountains of Madness & Other Tales of Terror
by
H P Lovecraft
711peterhoffman
, December 12, 2013
The horror genre is a guilty pleasure of mine but more often than not I end up disappointed. This book, however, was a welcome surprise. It is extremely inventive and uses mounting terror and dread instead of overly descriptive violence and gore. Lovecraft seems to instinctively know how to tap into a strangeness that keeps you so interested that it is one of most engaging books I've read in a long time. I highly recommend it for a weirdly good time.

Sexus The Rosy Crucifixion 1
by
Henry Miller
711peterhoffman
, December 11, 2013
Although voluminous I found Sexus to be one of Miller's more accessible novels. Much of the book is autobiographical and gives a fascinating insight into a great artist during his struggle to become a writer. The picture of a young artist's passion set against the upheavals and turmoil of his personal relationships is engrossing. It was very hard to put down and it left me wanting more.

Uncomfortable Dead
by
Paco Ignacio II Taibo

Told by two unique authors in alternating chapters this book is hilarious and intriguing. Having read quite a bit of Subcommandante Marcos' political writings it was extremely pleasurable to read his lighter side in this book. This is just a fun book to read.

When the Killing's Done
by
Boyle, T. C.
711peterhoffman
, November 26, 2013
This novel is an insightful, and often funny, look at the environmental movement. The book revolves around the tale of two lives, one a passionate animal rights activist fighting perceived injustice and another an environmental scientist with her own passions for what is "right." As these two opposing forces come into conflict the differences, and similarities, between the two make for some very thought provoking storytelling. T.C.Boyle's trademark flair and mastery of prose is on full display.

Johnny Got His Gun
by
Trumbo, Dalton and Doctorow, E. L.
711peterhoffman
, November 25, 2013
This story unfolds as a world war I soldier is realizing he has been left with no arms, legs, face or hearing after a shell explodes nearby. A very disturbing journey through realization and struggles to come to grips with his condition take the reader to very unlikely territory. While not overtly political this book manages to transcend it's own storyline and makes a very powerful statement about war and the power struggle between those who would wage it and those who have to carry it out. It is gritty, unnerving and completely unforgettable.

Far Journeys
by
Robert A Monroe
711peterhoffman
, November 20, 2013
Whether you believe in the possibility of out of body experiences or not this book is still wholly fascinating. The experiences recounted here are captivating and thought provoking. Taken at it's very least it reads like good fiction, taken at it's word it is groundbreaking. Far Journeys is a thought provoking and eye opening book. You will never quite regard your dreams the same way again.

Marabou Stork Nightmares
by
Irvine Welsh
711peterhoffman
, November 18, 2013
Irvine Welsh is such a fantastic writer and this is probably his most underrated novel. I absolutely loved every page. The story unfolds through the gradual rememberings of a man's concious mind while in a coma to reveal the outrageous events that brought him to such a state. The story is genious, the telling is inventive and addicting and the end will blow you away. Although much of the subject matter is very dark it is still a funny and enjoyable novel. I highly recommend Marabou Stork Nightmares by Irvine Welsh.

In the Lake of the Woods
by
Tim O'Brien
711peterhoffman
, November 12, 2013
I was a fan of Tim O'Brien long before reading this book, so I had high expectations of this book. Even so this book blew me away. This book is a display of a true master at the height of his craft. I have never read anything like it before or since. This book is haunting in best sense of the word. Years after reading it I still think of it often. O'Brien describes the protagonists mental disintegration and his coming to grips with ghosts of his past while simultaneously dealing with public disgrace in a way that is at the same time compassionate and coldly distant. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
