Sarahs Key

This book was very moving for me, it talks about the events of 1942 and various situations I was unfamiliar with. The book follows a young Jewish girl through one of the most difficult times of the war and until her death some 60 years later. Most moving was the impact of the difficulties, not only she faced, but those around her and how they dealt with the shame/crimes...even I cried to the end. This is a must read for everyone it really personalized the events while showing how the citizens on both sides of the fences dealt with the injustices of war.

House At Riverton
by
Kate Morton
Gary Becker
, March 31, 2013
Kate Morton is a wonderful writer...she's able to waft you back and forth to another time and era making her stories a delight to read. In the House at Riverton she intertwines parallel stories of families and the effects of events on each of the individuals and their ability to deal with the happenings. I was lost in the details and on the edge of my seat, unable to put the book down.

Black Box
by
Michael Connelly
Gary Becker
, February 15, 2013
The Black Box is a wonderful example of sleuthing by the LAPD's Harry Bosch. Interesting how small clues lead to big developments in both a murder investigation and in Bosch's own life with little side clues for the reader as to the popular jazz performers of our times and where to enjoy them. Connelly's writing keeps me guessing if he obtains his stories from the real life events of his past reporting or whether he just dreams them up from his wonderfully creative mind. This book is another one of the many really great stories in his catalog of writings...you really can't go wrong on any of his books, each one is better than the next and will keep you guessing if he will be able to top his last efforts-which he repeatedly does!

Haunting Of Hill House
by
Shirley Jackson
Gary Becker
, January 30, 2013
I don't know if this is good or bad, but ever since I've put this book down, I've had nightmares....really spooky book about a haunted house. Jackson has an uncanny ability to convey the horror of the diseased house, but without any of the phony visuals. Everything here is a psychological haunting which really sticks with you for days. Probably the best "haunting" I've ever read. Enjoy it if you can!!

Innocent
by
David Baldacci
Gary Becker
, January 18, 2013
I can't believe how captivated I am reading Baldacci's books! Every one of them keeps me on the edge of my seat and continuing to read until I'm out of time.... The Innocent was an interesting twist from the normal cat and mouse game and I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be a film one day. Here the hero takes a young girl under his wing of protection until the case of the murdered parents are located. You will not be able to put this book down (nor any of the Baldacci work actually.) I've now purchased a stack of them and are going through them one after a time. Baldacci's writing style is probably #1 in my list of authors and I'm sure you will like reading all of his work as well!

Better Homes & Gardens New Cook Book 15th Edition Binder
by
Better Homes & Gardens
Gary Becker
, January 08, 2013
Secretly and after 50 years of cookbook collecting, this is my #1 favorite. I received mine in the 50's and have carried it around ever since-we give one to every new bride, graduating student, and all the newly single persons on our gift lists. Modest, tried and true recipes that do not fail with instructions on how to prepare and serve them, a must for the beginner and a great springboard for the up and coming chef in your family or anyone that wants to avoid too many fast food meals but not be too extravagant in style-you know, just plain good food.

African Cookbook
by
Bea Sandler
Gary Becker
, January 05, 2013
This book is a real treat for anyone wanting to put an interesting meal on the table to celebrate Africa and its culture. We use it during Kwanzaa and it has been a great hit with the appetizers being the star of the show. The book has several peanut based recipes and uses spices readily available in the states. Interestingly enough it demonstrates how closely dishes have been adopted from the continent worldwide-you can see many dishes already used in many countries with just an addition of this or that. Bea was a great writer and her book is a reflection of her tour throughout. This may be one of the truly great books on African studies and a great addition to any ethnic collection you won't want to miss!

Unbelievable great recipes that don't take the entire day to do. One of the best pasta dishes in this book that my family has ever had and the tips on cooking were really time savers. Giada is not only one beautiful woman, but she can cook!! We gave two of these books for Christmas this year.

I, Michael Bennett

James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge
Gary Becker
, January 01, 2013
This new side writer is a real addition to Patterson's style. I find I can't wait to turn the pages with the suspenseful writing style. This is a good pair....Patterson's old format was getting just a bit too short and I always felt as if not enough embellishment was given to the details. Good job!

Macarons
by
Abraham, Berengere and Jarry, Marie-Jose
Gary Becker
, November 22, 2012
Berengere makes this book just the thing for your gift list. These macaroons are shaped like little tasty burgers with just the correct bit of sweet and a big bite of flavor! As you can see from the cover the flavors range from key lime to cassis and beyond, what a treat and they are beautiful on the plate. We have recently been to Europe and the bakeries have these delectable delights displayed in a rainbow of colors and flavors as a decoration for the stores. Do yourself a favor and order while they last, you won't be disappointed!

The Cook's Illustrated Cookbook
by
Cook's Illustrated
Gary Becker
, August 10, 2012
We had been saving all the Cooks magazines from forever, then this book came out-Thank Heavens, now we have everything we need in one source. The best thing are all the tips and the difficulty of selecting just the right recipe for a great meal has been done for us. As newly retired people, we really didn't cook much while we were working and this book gives all the instruction to preparing just the right combination of foods along with the how to we really appreciate....need to update our skills-Thanks Cooks!

Mitsitam Cafe Cookbook Recipes from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian
by
Richard Hetzler
Gary Becker
, August 09, 2012
Oh man, my wife and I loved this book. Every page is full of history on the people and the food stuffs along with recipes to make some of the tastiest dishes you could imagine--the chef, Richard Hetzler, is a genius in his own right. Interesting enough the foods seem to represent a cross of Apache, Southwest and Hispanic tastes. We had an Apache stew in out travels in Arizona, but could never find any acceptable recipes, we have one now and have made it a couple of times...that along with fry bread, what a treat! As a bonus they show pictures of their pottery, costumes, artworks, stitchery and landscapes-it's a good read and wonderful addition to our book collections. Kudos to the Smithsonian for putting together such a dear treasure!

Cooks Country Cookbook Rediscovering American Home Cooking with 500 Classic Regional & Heirloom Recipes
by
Americas Test Kitchen, Cooks Illustrated
Gary Becker
, August 06, 2012
How would you like to have a single unit reference book on the bookshelf that not only has the "how to" on the recipes but has already tested all aspects of preparation adding up to date twists. This is it! I've been enchanted with the clear directions for preparation and have so far been able to imitate a real chef in my own kitchen with results my family loved. You will even have your fears eliminated when attempting to make a new dish you have not made previously, they walk you step by step through the stages and in the end a miracle of flavor results..bon appetit! Don't forget to smile when your friends ask you for your secrets...I've even bought two for birthday presents.
