Detroit an American Autopsy
by
Charlie Leduff

The book is very well-written. I expected nothing less of a Pulitzer prize winner. Detroiters should be proud to call Charlie one of our own. Though he is no longer with the Detroit News, as he was during most of the book, he is a prominent figure as an investigative reporter for Fox2 News. I've given up TV for a year (9 months in)...really looking forward to watching the news again and for Charlie.

Dinner
by

Gripping story, almost as delicate as the food, as nimble as the choice of the main course, this book will not let you disappointed. Sometimes, the plot seems a bit far-away where Paul goes to describe his counters with Serge or what he feels about his son but all those bits and pieces finally fit together to reach the conclusion. They don't describe love for their children as loudly and as vividly as the restaurant manager describes the food but the subliminal care and the picturesque representation of the characters is what makes this book a stand out.

Perla

As Perla works to solve this mystery, I found myself agonizing over wanting to know and not wanting to know the truth. This story, although profound, is absolutely beautiful. I find myself tearing up at this moment, from the emotions this novel brought out in me, not because it was sad, rather the sense of release it gave me at its close. As an introduction to the Dirty War that took place in Argentina, this is a sublime pick. I previous had no knowledge of the events that took place in Argentina when I was a young girl and find myself wanting to learn more after ready this truly wonderful piece of literature. WOW! So powerful! Highly recommended to all.

Benediction
by
Kent Haruf

This is a magnificent novel. It's about a man dying, but contains so many scenes of life and hope that I had to put the book down after each chapter and stare out into space absorbing the beauty of Haruf's world. Haruf tells an emotional story, really several small stories as he goes back in time to reveal the fullness of a life, that emcompass several different characters and yet it all seems so simple. His sentences are often declarative and his descriptions modestly elegant. He shifts from character to character with each chapter and his decisions on where to take the story seem inevitable and never contrived. I got the feeling when reading this book that this story has always been out there and Haruf somehow excavated it like a sculptor chiseling out a magnificent statue hidden in a block of stone. The only negative thing I can say about this book is that it ended.

River Swimmer
by
Jim Harrison

Harrison has the remarkable ability to paint landscapes of American life comprised of protagonists that are so communal with nature in a way that isn't "hickish" and in a way that the common person can relate to. He also filters his stories with very vague comments about the world around him that speak volumes for government, wars, current events, and humanity and/or human nature on the whole that really elevate his writing to an elite level. "Was there truly dirty money? Or was it purified by rotation and use". Of course, his strength lies in his ability to do this all while being sincerely and simply entertaining.
