Douglas Fairbanks
by
Jeffrey Vance
Hera

'Douglas Fairbanks ' is a remarkable biography as well as an enthralling history of early Hollywood . The stars were beautiful and treated like gods and goddesses . Some ,like the dashing Fairbanks ,became millionaires ,acquiring extravagant jewels ,cars, mansions and estates , while others foolishly became involved with drugs ,risky relationships and gambling .Many beloved stars like Fatty Arbuckle were brought down by sex scandals . Fairbanks's career was one of film history's most successful , until the fear of aging out of his swashbuckling roles led him to turn to alcohol . He ended his marriage to Mary Pickford for a much younger woman ,further damaging his box office appeal . This book is quite beautiful ,with many rare silent era photos, and is a pleasure for any reader interested in silent films and it's actors .

Mae Murray The Girl with the Bee Stung Lips
by

Mae Murray had it all... ,beauty ,fame ,money . She was the queen of the Hollywood silent film era .What she lacked was any sort of self control . When Mae wanted anything , the most extravagant jewelry ,mansions ,or inappropriate men, she got it ,whatever the cost . Her indulgences caught up with her and she went into a personal and career crisis . The screen's top star was down on her luck , and made many more unwise choices . Her biography is a cautionary tale of what can happen to someone with no control of their wants and passions . It is such a haunting story that I had to re-read it , to try to understand how someone with what seemed a perfect life could be so reckless and naive.

Marjorie changes her name from Morgenstern to Morningstar to become an actress . She is beautiful and talented but has had a sheltered upbringing and enters the seductive theatre world innocent and vulnerable . She has many surprises as she attempts to work her way up the acting ladder . Her infatuation with the charismatic Noel forces her to make many new choices ,some risky . Marjorie experiences love and heartbreak in her dealings with lovers and acting . A wonderful book describing the pursuit of a career on stage and the heavy toll it can take on a young hopeful.

Johnstown Flood
by
David McCullough
Hera
, January 25, 2014
This was Mc Cullough's first book , and I think one of his best . His depiction of the contrasts between the wealthy and the poor classes in Johnstown are riveting and just as relevant today . As on the Titanic , the rich enjoyed all the pleasures their wealth could buy . They made Johnstown their vacation destination , building large estates and a dam to create a lake for their boating and fishing . That the poor lived in locations below the dam was not a consideration in their plans to create their luxurious resort . Many lives were lost because of this greed and McCullough captures the terror of the event and the plight of the many men ,women and children lost in the man- made disaster.

More fun than ' Antique Roadshow' ,this book follows a real collectible hunter as he searches flea markets , thrift stores , estate and garage sales for items to resell at great profit. . He explains every aspect of finding all sorts of overlooked but valuable items.. He take the reader along on every step as he searches for treasures in sometimes surprising places . He dabbles on Ebay ,explaining the tricks to assure winning auctions . You are pulled into his exciting world of finding objects most would not notice , making good money in the process . This is his lifelong quest and has been a lucrative career . Surprising , honest, and sometimes funny . I learned so much about finding and selling all sorts of collectibles that it has become an addictive pastime .
