New Literature in Translation: December 2022 and January 2023
(0 comment)
It may be a new year, this may be a list of new books, but our love for literature in translation hasn’t changed at all, and we are so pleased to be enthusiastically recommending these recent releases. On this list, you’ll find a Spanish novel where controversy swirls around a Coca-Cola billboard...

Unknown Threat
by
Lynn H. Blackburn

, April 12, 2021
Can they solve this case before it's too late? Ever read a book where you have a dozen theories as to whodunit and why, and you are proven right in the end, but you're proven wrong? Unknown Threat was a spine-tingling page-turner of a novel that did just that. Seriously, I don't think I got a breath in edgewise, Lynn H. Blackburn had me riveted from the first page. Unknown Threat is the first book in Lynn H. Blackburn's brand new Defend And Protect series and if the succeeding books are as good as this one was I'll be in a seventh heaven of action-packed romantic suspense. Have I mentioned how much I enjoyed it? LOL! I had the best time trying to figure things out alongside Faith and Luke and I think I can say that Unknown Threat is probably my favorite Lynn H. Blackburn book that I've read...so far, at least... I fully intend on reading every single Defend And Protect book as soon as I can... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Texas Target Standoff
by
Virginia Vaughan
J Augustine
, March 26, 2021
She can ruin his career, can he save her life? Let me start by saying that it's because of books like Texas Target Standoff that I enjoy Love Inspired Suspense, and in particular Virginia Vaughan, as much as I do. I liked it almost as much as I did the first Cowboy Lawmen novel, Texas Twin Abduction, which is my favorite Virginia Vaughan book of all time....for now at least. Texas Target Standoff had all of the danger, mystery, drama, tension, and romance my little mayhem-loving heart could wish for. It's a fairly short read but the author packs all of the action and suspense she can into approximately 220 pages. Fans of Virginia Vaughan and Love Inspired Suspense are sure to love her Cowboy Lawmen series. Texas Target Standoff is book 3 but each one can be read standalone. I can tell you from personal experience, though, that you won't want to miss a single one! (I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Texas Witness Threat
by
Cate Nolan
J Augustine
, January 09, 2021
Only one man believes her story... What would you do if no one believed you, even those closest to you? That's a really good question, one I found myself pondering as I read Texas Witness Threat. Somehow I doubt I would be half as generous as Christine is in the book! At any rate, I found that plot decision made by author Cate Nolan to be different and quite interesting. I'm so used to Assistant US Attorneys being believed in fiction... Texas Witness Threat was another edge-of-your-seat Love Inspired Suspense and I quite enjoyed it. Not a bad choice for my first read of 2021! The settings were great, starting in a creepy empty building during a thunderstorm and winding up on a Texas ranch, with some pretty interesting stops along the way. And I'll give you a hint, the cover really matches part of the story! If you are looking for a fairly short, easy, but romantic and suspenseful read, you won't go wrong in choosing Cate Nolan's latest from Love Inspired Suspense. It's a pretty good one! (I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

The Gold Digger, Volume 9
by
Liz Tolsma
J Augustine
, December 29, 2020
They came to the gold digger one by one... I'm going to be honest, in my estimation The Gold Digger has topped all of the other True Colors books as the most chilling... Seriously, I was reading it all by myself late at night and I got so creeped out that every shadow and every creak of the settling house had me jumping and I had to lay it aside until morning. Well done author Liz Tolsma! She seriously got to me! I had actually heard of Belle Gunness and her heinous crimes before, though I'd forgotten her name and the location, so I knew things would get quite gruesome before the end. What I didn't expect was how quickly I got caught up in the stories of the fictional characters. There were several times when I was so emotionally involved in their losses and pain that I had to remind myself Ingrid and Nils weren't even real. That all of the obvious signs, the missed opportunities, the clues, were all fiction. Needless to say, I was totally impressed by Liz Tolsma's engrossing writing skills and her ability to drop me so effectively into The Gold Digger and La Porte, Indiana of 1907-1908. This may be the 10th True Colors book but with titles like this one I can tell you that the series is only getting stronger... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Murder Between the Pages
by
Amy Lillard
J Augustine
, December 24, 2020
Just when things were getting back to normal... I've been on a real cozy mystery kick this year. Whether it's an e-book or audiobook, as long as it's a clean read and features a nice friendly murder, I'm in. That means A Murder Between The Pages, the second book in Amy Lillard's fun Main Street Book Club Mysteries series, fit right in with my mood. While I enjoyed the first Main Street Book Club Mysteries book I actually enjoyed A Murder Between The Pages even more. I'm a fan of stories where mysteries from the past are connected to current crimes so I really got into the story straight off. I had so much fun following clues Amy Lillard wove throughout the story and trying to figure out whodunit and why they done it. Let me just say that I love the ladies in Arlo's book club! They are quirky, not very PC, and always speak their minds. Plus they are not your average grandmas, no these ladies poke their noses into some pretty dangerous situations and help solve crimes, albeit sometimes almost inadvertently, instead of baking cookies. You just cannot help but get a kick out of them! If you enjoy cozy mysteries, small town settings, and sometimes hilarious characters you really should check out Amy Lillard's Main Street Book Club Mysteries. Though, for A Murder Between The Pages to make more sense you do need to read the first book. Anyway, what are you waiting for? (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Crushing Depths
by
Dani Pettrey
J Augustine
, December 24, 2020
Will they die in the crushing depths? There are some authors you can just count on. No matter what they'll always deliver a story that intrigues, triggers the imagination, and that you just can't put down. Dani Pettrey is one such author. From novellas to entire series', it makes no difference, she never disappoints her readers in any way. The Crushing Depths was everything I anticipated and a little bit more. It was intense, it was riveting, it was gripping, and, of course, it was romantic. I absolutely loved the tension of Rissi and Dawson trying to solve the mystery before the impending storm destroys the evidence, all the while trying to dance around the unresolved feelings between them. Yes, Dani Pettrey is a master of her craft. She oh so skillfully ratchets up that aforementioned tension, taking her characters nearly to their breaking point, keeps her readers desperately turning the pages, and then....the final showdown and everything falls into places as you finally get the chance to breathe again. The Crushing Depths is a wonderful read. It's a little grittier than some romantic suspense and the multi-faceted mystery will chill, thrill, and keep you guessing. All in all this book is definitely a great addition to the Coastal Guardians series and is a must read for fans of the series and author. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. A Home for Her Daughter
by
Jill Weatherholt
J Augustine
, December 13, 2020
The need each other more than they know... A Home For Her Daughter was one of the rare times that I wanted to read a book based solely on the cover. I'd not read anything by Jill Weatherholt before but that little girl with the baby chick in her hands was just SO CUTE! I couldn't resist. Didn't even really try. And I did enjoy A Home For Her Daughter. It was such a heartwarming story of love and loss, grief and grace, family and faith, and of regret and redemption. Precocious little Riley and her desire for an animal menagerie was so adorable, and, whether author Jill Weatherholt intended it or not, she really stole the show. Jill Weatherholt's newest book was a good read. It provided a nice break from longer novels as well as from all the bad news that seems to be dominating the world right now. The characters in A Home For Her Daughter don't have it easy by any means but it was still fun to check out of a world gone crazy and into a story with a sweet romance and a happy ending... A Dazzle of Diamonds
by
Liz Johnson
J Augustine
, September 24, 2020
Will past secrets be their making or breaking? Well, I think A Dazzle Of Diamonds may be my favorite Liz Johnson book yet. Which, is saying a lot as I've loved the entire Georgia Coast Romance series from the very beginning. The humor, the historical mystery, the family drama, and the best-friends-to-lovers romance, is perfect. A Dazzle Of Diamonds is charming, sweet, and definitely a little convicting as Penelope “PJ” and Tucker learn some valuable but sometimes difficult life lessons. I also really enjoyed the historical sections of the story. Liz Johnson brought elements of the Civil War in Savannah, which was something I knew little about, to life. And besides, who wouldn't love a 150 year old mystery with family secrets and a lost Civil War treasure? I know I sure did! If you are looking for a good beach read, or a stay-at-home story, or novel to entertain yourself while traveling, or if you are taking part in a summer reading program, A Dazzle Of Diamonds would be a perfect choice. Liz Johnson has you more than covered with this delightful book... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Rocky Mountain Revenge

They are in danger from the known and unknown... Wow! What a Love Inspired Suspense debut! I am seriously hooked! Rhonda Starnes has a real winner with Rocky Mountain Revenge! Her blend of spine-tingling suspense and sparks-flying romance was spot on. She keeps you guessing and your heart pounding from start to finish. I will make a confession, though, as much as I enjoyed the romantic suspense my two favorite things about the story involved neither. Those two things being the heroine's unusual for the genre occupation of veterinarian, and, my favorite character, a fella named Barkley. I really had a hard time putting down Rocky Mountain Revenge, author Rhonda Starnes totally had me glued to the page. I had one of those rare days with few interruptions to my reading and I took full advantage. If you love the Love Inspired Suspense line you really should check out this exciting debut novel. It's a good one! (I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Accidental Target

She just wanted to help but now she's on the run... I absolutely love trying new Love Inspired Suspense authors, especially when it's their debut novel. Accidental Target is precisely why I enjoy them so much! What. A. Wild. Ride! From start to finish Theresa Hall wove a tale of riveting suspense, spine-tingling danger, and, one must not forget, romance. I have Accidental Target in paperback and I think the pages may have smoked a little from how fast I was reading. I couldn't put it down. Seriously, when a story starts out with proof of the old saying about no good deed going unpunished, well, how could I not be intrigued? This book may be Theresa Hall's first Love Inspired Suspense but I certainly hope it won't be her last. I really do look forward to reading more from this talented author. Romancing Nadine
by
Amy Lillard
J Augustine
, August 01, 2020
She's stubborn. He's in love. Can it all work out? I have to admit that I'm quite surprised. Not by the fact that I like the story. Not by Amy Lillard's wonderful writing. Nope. Not at all. Romancing Nadine is the second story about the Burkhart women and features a grandmother in her mid-sixties. No, what surprised me was that despite the fact that she's literally twice my age I connected with Nadine even more than I did her granddaughter, who is much closer to my age, in the previous book. And as a never-married myself I also had some real sympathy with Amos. Over the years I've read quite a few of Amy Lillard's Amish romances, this is the 10th Wells Landing book for one thing, so I've come to expect a lot from her. And she has never disappointed me. Romancing Nadine certainly didn't. She has a real knack for taking issues that we all face, Amish and Englisher alike, and weaving them into a sweet and entertaining story. I enjoyed Romancing Nadine, as I've enjoyed all of the Wells Landing Romances, and was actually a little surprised at how quickly I finished despite using an e-reader instead of my preferred paperbacks. Ah, well, Amy Lillard's books are great no matter the format. Anyway, don't miss this fun and poignant read! (I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Texas Twin Abduction
by
Virginia Vaughan
J Augustine
, July 10, 2020
She can't remember him...but he remembers her... Whoa! What a wild ride! I've read a few of Virginia Vaughan's previous Love Inspired Suspense titles, so, I know to expect the unexpected from her. And if there's one book to expect the unexpected, it's Texas Twin Abduction. I was kept riveted to the page right from page one. I mean, what else can you be when the story starts off with the aftermath of gunfire, an ex-girlfriend's reappearance, and a lot of missing memory? I will confess that, while I did see one big switch-on-a-switch coming, it was still no less startling when it did. I'm a definite fan of Virginia Vaughan, her stories are a little on the grittier side of Love Inspired Suspense, which is what I love about them. Texas Twin Abduction is a great example of her page-turner romantic suspense. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next Cowboy Lawmen book... (I received a copy of this book from the author. Cross Shadow
by
Andrew Huff
J Augustine
, June 17, 2020
The stakes are higher than ever in Dallas... Once again author Andrew Huff delivers a rip-roaring thriller that will leave you gasping and your pulse pounding. Both John Cross and Christine Lewis are back, and, yet again, they will have to try and trust each other as they dodge both bad guys and the law. Betrayal is just around the corner and flying bullets are only a breath away. But, this is pretty much everyday stuff for the small-town preacher and the big city reporter. I've been looking forward to Cross Shadow since reading the first Shepherd Suspense Novel last fall. While action thrillers are not my movie of choice I do like to read the occasional well written book. And, Cross Shadow IS well written. Andrew Huff keeps up the breakneck pace of the action all while his characters grapple with some tough questions. I read this book in pretty short order. I couldn't put it down. Like John and Christine I HAD to know the truth. Did her brother really commit murder? What about the shadowy company he worked for and what are they hiding? What will happen to John and Christine? Can they survive intact? I really enjoyed Cross Shadow. Andrew Huff more than kept me engaged and anxiously turning the pages of this action thriller. Though the ending was a little bittersweet, the promise of more to come in next Shepherd Suspense Novel contented me. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. The Lost Lieutenant
by
Erica Vetsch
J Augustine
, May 14, 2020
Their lives change forever at the whim of one man... I've been a bit leery of Regency era fiction in recent years. It seems like if you've read one you've read them all, though there are definitely exceptions. But, I put aside all reservations because The Lost Lieutenant is an Erica Vetsch novel and she had won me over years ago with her historical westernish romance. I've never regretted reading one of her books and that still very much holds true. I was continually surprised by The Lost Lieutenant and I really enjoyed that fact. It's not one of the myriad Austen retellings nor an endless round if teas and dancing. There is so much more to Erica Vetsch's characters than that. They both hold secrets, ones that could mean serious heartbreak, but if they are going to make their unexpected and certainly unplanned marriage work they are going to have to learn to trust each other. One of the other pleasantly unexpected parts of the story was the suspense thread, especially near the end of the book. I loved it! When it got to the showdown I was riveted to the page and couldn't have put the book down even if I wanted to, which, of course, I didn't. I really liked The Lost Lieutenant and I think I've discovered my new favorite Erica Vetsch novel. And, the best part? This is only book 1 in the very engaging Serendipity & Secrets series, I can't wait for the next one! (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Terror in the Skies - Large Print
by
Alana Terry
J Augustine
, May 05, 2020
A simple flight home...or not... My confession about Terror In The Skies is that I didn't even bother to read the blurb before picking up the book. All I really had to see was Alana Terry's name on the cover and I knew that it was an e-book I wanted to read. Needless to say, because I didn't read that blurb I was quite surprised to find out that this novella featured Willow's perspective of the hijacking in Alana Terry's Kennedy Stern novel Turbulence. Yeah, you know Willow, Kennedy's blue haired wild child of a roommate. The girl I couldn't really disagree with more on pretty much everything but I also couldn't help loving. Yep, that Willow. Terror In The Skies is her story of how she must make a life altering choice as she stares death in the face. When I first started reading Terror In The Skies, which is the first novella in the Turbulent Skies series, I didn't realize that it was a novella. As with pretty much every other Alana Terry book I couldn't put it down, finishing in about an hour or so. I know I was pretty surprised when I looked down and saw that I was 48% done and I could have sworn I had just started. Anyway, great suspense story from a great author. I can't wait to read the rest of the Turbulent Skies series as I know it will be a good one. (I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Their Wander Canyon Wish

Can a carousel bring them together? What a sweet adorable story! If I weren't already an Allie Pleiter fan Their Wander Canyon Wish would definitely make me one. I really do think it's my favorite of her books so far. I'll confess that I was a bit dubious when I started it because I hadn't really cared for Wyatt in his first appearance so I wasn't sure how much I'd like him now. Needless to say, I changed my mind. And as much as I liked Marilyn and felt for her as she dealt with loss as well as the fall-out of secrets coming to light, it was her two little girls Maddie and Margie that I fell in love with. Those two were just so cute! I would be remiss if I didn't mention my absolute favorite thing about Their Wander Canyon Wish, the carousel. I've loved them since I was little girl and rode one for the first time. There is something magical about carousels that transcends age. Love carousels and faith-filled romance? I would heartily suggest Allie Pleiter's charming Love Inspired novel. It's a quick and easy read that is sure to brighten your day. (I received a copy of this book from the author. Secret Mountain Hideout

Terri Reed

Her past is about to catch up to them both... First off, I just have to say that I think this might be one of my favorite Love Inspired Suspense covers. I love the cabin back by tall mountains with that lightning dancing overhead, and OK, the horses are a nice touch, too. As to the story, Terri Reed is up there on my list of favorite Love Inspired Suspense authors so I knew I was in for some good romantic suspense reading when I picked up Secret Mountain Hideout. I was not disappointed! Lots of danger, romance, and some pretty nice Colorado scenery. I enjoyed my jaunt back to Bristle Township with Terri Reed's characters and I sincerely hope there will be more adventures in that locale in the future. But for now I'll just appreciate Secret Mountain Hideout and tell you to check it out for yourself. (I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Are they each exactly what the other needs...? I'm always a little sad to end a series that I've enjoyed but I am equally as excited to start a new one, to meet new characters and make friends with them. Finding The Road Home is the first book in Tina Radcliffe's new Hearts Of Oklahoma series and introduces the Rainbolt family. Can I just say how much I like that very unique last name? Rainbolt conjures up wild thunderstorms with dark clouds and lightning in my mind. I really did enjoy Daisy and Mitch's story though I sure wanted to shake each of them at different times. The rest of the residents of Rebel, Oklahoma, were quirky, charming, and just plain fun. I especially liked Daisy's crusty partner at her new job. If you enjoy Love Inspired books, which are short and easy reads with plenty of romance, faith, and family, you've got to check out Finding The Road Home from author Tina Radcliffe. Oh, and a friendly warning...this book will make you HUNGRY! (I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Amish Country Murder

He's killed before...can she truly escape him? Yikes! Who knew a peaceful Montana Amish community could be so dangerous with a serial killer on the loose?! And I'm not just talking about the Montana winters...Not a bit! Over the years I've read and watched a lot of mysteries and suspense but I'll confess that with Amish Country Murder the only thing I did know was who WASN'T the killer. Maybe I should have, but I totally did not see the villain's identity coming. At. All. Mary Alford certainly kept me guessing and in the dark with this one! I really enjoyed Mary Alford's latest Amish romantic suspense hybrid. And I particularly liked the choice one character had to make about faith and life, it was definitely different from the typical Amish story. Like chills and thrills and serial killer stories? You really must check out the Love Inspired Suspense novel Amish Country Murder. (I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Her Cowboy Till Christmas
by
Jill Kemerer
J Augustine
, April 21, 2020
She's back for Christmas but is he ready for that? Career woman falls in love with widower and child seems to be a common thread in Love Inspired novels, in both the romance and romantic suspense lines, but what isn't as common is a situation that many people in modern society find themselves in, that of the difficult balance between caring for elderly family members at home or having to take that painful next step and start looking for a care facility. But Jill Kemerer takes that tough topic head on, but with grace and sensitivity, along with grief, unforgiveness, and the need to sometimes rearrange goals and adjust dreams. Yeah, a slim little romance novel really can have all that, and more, within its pages. Her Cowboy Till Christmas may have an exterior that lends itself to believing it's a simple lightweight romance novel, it's true that it is a fairly quick and easy read, but don't be fooled, under the sweet cover is a pretty good book that shouldn't be missed. Silent Shadows

Natalie Walters

Nothing in a small town is as it seems... Oh yeah!!! Talk about a hum-dinger of a conclusion to a perfectly chilling romantic suspense series! Seriously, when a novel starts out with the first line “Pecca Gallegos never thought she'd be turning down a marriage proposal – much less four of them.” one wouldn't normally expect dangerous secrets from the past and a hail of bullets to ensue, but, this is a Natalie Walters book and it's romantic suspense. Silent Shadows was a pretty good book right from the dramatically creepy purple cover to the last exciting page. There were so many twists and turns I could hardly keep up and I totally did not guess the reason behind the rising threats toward Pecca and her son Maceo. With each of the novels in the Harbored Secrets series the author introduces flawed characters facing challenges that as Christians we often try to pretend only happen to non-believers. Silent Shadows was no exception. The characters have to deal with a number of emotional and physical issues that would be daunting to any person. Natalie Walters has a pretty good story with this book and I have to admit that I'm sorry to say goodbye to everyone in Walton, Georgia. Who knew a sleepy small Southern town could be so dangerous... This may be the last book in the Harbored Secrets series but I certainly hope to see more from this author in the future. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Fatal Flashback

, April 06, 2020
The danger is as big as the whole outdoors... OK, I'll admit it. As much as I liked the characters, it was the Big Bend National Park, Texas, that really stole the show for me. Santa Elena Canyon etc. is probably one of the most interesting and unique places that I've read about in a Love Inspired Suspense novel. Kellie VanHorn does an excellent job describing the sights, sounds, and smells of the dramatic location leaving readers feeling like they've been there. While she does take some license with trails and other spots you can almost feel the heat...and the danger... Fatal Flashback is the perfect title for for this little tale of romantic suspense. What Ashley can't remember is dangerous, but what she does remember is even more lethal. And, of course, Logan isn't sure who he can trust anymore. Fatal Flashback has lots of thrills and, despite the Texas heat, chills in store for readers. So, go ahead and check out Kellie VanHorn's debut with Love Inspired Suspense. Deadly Christmas Pretense

Dana Mentink
J Augustine
, April 06, 2020
The Cowboy and the Cook, in danger, and in love... Wow, another exciting Roughwater Ranch Cowboys book! I probably say this every time but I think this is probably my favorite series from author Dana Mentink. Book two in the series, Deadly Christmas Pretense, was great! It had thrills, chills, and even a few spills! If you are into flawed heroes this is the book for you. If there were a dictionary definition I would think Liam's name would be somewhere in the examples. But I liked him, he's also protective, loyal, and a decent guy. Maggie has spunk, she's willing to do whatever it takes to save her sister, and she's exactly what Liam needs. Deadly Christmas Pretense is a prime example of why Dana Mentink is one of my top favorite Love Inspired Suspense authors, her romantic comedy is good, too, by the way. Anyway, this was an enjoyable read, perfect for reading during the holiday season, like I did. If you love tense romantic suspense, and cowboys, set during Christmastime, this is the book you need to read... (I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Spice King

Scandal and intrigue bring unexpected romance... I have to admit that I've been a little hit or miss with reading Elizabeth Camden's books in recent years. I'm really not sure why because I really enjoy them. But, anyway, I am glad that The Spice King was one of the 'hits'. Not only was I completely entertained by this story but I also learned a lot, about vanilla which is one of my favorite flavors, to something I hadn't really thought of because it is the norm now, the need for requiring food labels to fully disclose the contents. Anyway, I was won over right away by the heroine's job, I'm a museum fan so her work in the Smithsonian was way cool! The hero's work as the head of an international spice company was quite interesting, I was even inspired to check out the history of vanilla because of him. I found The Spice King to be interesting, intriguing, and a very good read. There's some great dramatic moments, a bit of danger, and definitely some romance. I think it's probably one of my favorite Elizabeth Camden books so far. There were some surprises and I couldn't help but wonder when the heroine had to make a difficult decision what I would do if I were in her shoes. The Spice King was a an enjoyable story and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what Elizabeth Camden has in store for the Delacroix family in the next book in the Hope And Glory series... Gray Chamber

They say she's crazy...but is she really...? I've seriously been getting into the True Colors series and The Gray Chamber was no exception. Grace Hitchcock's second offering in the series was exciting, romantic, and creepy. Really, did you think you could have a book partially set in the women's lunatic asylum on Blackwell Island and not have some creep factor going on? One of the most shocking things about the 1800s is just how little it took for a woman to be committed to a mental asylum. No joke, more than one woman was committed for reading novels. Good thing I didn't live back then! Journalist Nellie Bly went undercover as patient at Blackwell Island and big changes were made at the facility because of her testimony as to what went on. My school history book mentioned Nellie Bly's work, but, as so often happens with fiction, The Gray Chamber really brought the whole dark business home. Grace Hitchcock has a winner in The Gray Chamber. I very much enjoyed reading it, from the quirky antics of the heroine to the danger in the asylum to the final showdown with the villain. If you are into historical fiction based on real history you should check out this book from Grace Hitchcock, as well as the rest of the books in the True Colors series... Dangerous Relations

Will they fight each or fight together...? Wow! I think Dangerous Relations may be one of the most edge-of-your-seat Love Inspired Suspense books that I've read this year! Seriously, author Carol J. Post takes readers on a wild ride with more twists and turns than a mountain highway. Just when you think you've got the whole story figured out and neatly tied up, bang, you find out you really didn't know anything at all. While I did have the villain figured out pretty early on I was still in for some big surprises as Carol J. Post sure tossed plenty of distractions my way. I really enjoyed Dangerous Relations with all of its danger and romance. It was a great read and I know that I will be looking for more of Carol J. Post's books in the future. 2 dead...is there a Cold Case Connection? Well, I really shouldn't be surprised. After all, Dana Mentink is right up there on my list of top favorite Love Inspired Suspense authors. But, boy did I get involved in Cold Case Connection! I loved Helen right from the start but I got so mad at some of Sergio's attitudes that I stewed over them even when I wasn't reading the book! Though,I have to be honest and say that when I wasn't reading didn't happen very often. I pretty much read right on through because I couldn't put it down. One of those reasons, was, of course, because I just HAD to know if my guesses as to the killer's identity were correct. And one of them was, but wasn't, I had the right clue and the right person but not for the reason I thought. Dana Mentink really did a great job leading her characters, and readers, on one wild ride of danger and romance! Cold Case Connection is the third book in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series and it can be read standalone but I don't recommend missing any of these exciting stories. I've enjoyed all of them so far and I know I am eagerly anticipating the next book... (I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

In the Garden: An Illustrated Guide to the Plants of the Bible
by
Whitaker House

, March 23, 2020
I'm always up for learning something new, and hopefully useful, so In The Garden was a natural choice for me to read. They did a pretty good job at Whitaker House of putting this book together. The layout is pretty simple, easy to read, and interesting. Each chapter features a Bible verse(s) mentioning that particular plant, a description of the plant, Latin and Hebrew names, and a lovely color illustrations. While this book is not an exhaustive plant guide it does provide a nice overview of some of the most interesting plants mentioned in the Bible and it's a great way to enhance your Bible reading. My favorite part of In The Garden was the growing section, complete with zone information, with information on growing your own Biblical inspired garden. They say that the sense of smell is extremely important to humans, especially in relation to memories, so can you imagine smelling those same scents as you are reading about them in your Bible? Talk about the Bible coming to life right off the page! Anyway, In The Garden was a good read and I wouldn't be surprised if it makes my favorite non-fiction reading list for 2020. It's laid out nicely and you can either read it straight through, like I did, or you could take the time to slowly enjoy it one plant at time. As I said before, the people at Whitaker House did an excellent job with this book and I enjoyed very much. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

They hold the safety of the world in their hands... Killer Harvest is only the second book I've read by Tanya Stowe, I've also read Fatal Memories, but it's definitely my favorite. What's not to like? The book starts off with a murder, add some terrorists, toss in a deadly plant pathogen with the ability to destroy the world, liberally sprinkle in some flying bullets, don't forget the adorable baby, shake it all up with trouble from the past, and the final ingredient is some serious sparks between the heroine and hero, and you've got some pretty exciting reading! I really enjoyed every bit of Killer Harvest and found it almost impossible to put down. Just when you thought you had it figured out Tanya Stowe would throw another monkey-wrench in the works and away you'd go. The twists and turns were great, the characters likable, and the California setting came alive on the page. Killer Harvest was a good read and I'm definitely looking forward to more Love Inspired Suspense from Tanya Stowe...I'm going to have to see if I can find her first LIS book, too... Even he can run from God for only so long... There is no other word to describe this book but 'weird'. It totally fits. But I don't mean it in a bad way. If I hadn't liked the first book, No Less Days, I wouldn't have chosen to read From Sky To Sky. While labeled as Suspense this book, and its predecessor, are definitely in the Speculative fiction realm. It's a genre that I rarely read but enjoy when I find books like this one from Amanda G. Stevens. From Sky To Sky takes on some interesting questions and themes. What if you couldn't die? How would that change your view of the world around you, of life itself? How would a person handle all the trauma, pain, and loss? Would it drive you to or away from God? Kinda makes the reader wonder how they themselves would handle it, and also think about how we do handle the pain that comes our way, even if we know we won't live indefinitely. From Sky To Sky was a good read. Entertaining but still gets you to think. I appreciated the suspense element that Amanda G. Stevens wove through the story along with some nice faith threads. The book did end on a bit of a cliffhanger so I'll be awaiting the next book...impatiently waiting, of course. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

An utterly charming and delightful book! I'm in love with another Jen Turano book! I just can't help it! Each book seems to get better and better! And it only takes one glance at the front to see why it is my favorite cover from all of the lovely ones from this series and earlier ones. Caught By Surprise is a completely delightful blend of romance, comedy, history, and suspense. I have to confess that it took me a little bit to warm up to Mr. Gilbert Cavendish, he is SUCH a stuffed shirt! However, I loved the surprising and whimsical Miss Temperance Flowerdew from the start. With a cast of characters who are charming, quirky, villainous, and NEVER what you expect, Jen Turano's conclusion to her irresistible Apart From The Crowd series is sure to enchant any reader. Caught By Surprise more than lives up to its title, featuring many laugh-out-loud moments, and even a few poignant ones, quite a few surprises all around, and a perfectly wonderful Happy ending... They want different things...or do they? All I have to see is the name Jen Turano on the cover and I know that I am in for a charming, madcap, and perfectly delicious story. There will be plenty of romance, laugh-out-loud moments, and some of the most weirdly wonderful characters on the written page. There will also be the most delightful elements of suspense that really keep the story hopping. Without fail Jen Turano delivers a story that makes me laugh, think a little, and definitely happy that I've read it. Flights Of Fancy was no exception. Flights Of Fancy is the first book in the American Heiresses series and it's a real winner. I was captivated by the characters, the setting, and the story, right off the bat. An enchantment that held through to the last page. Speaking of characters, there were a few very special ones that really captured my heart, besides the the heroine and hero, of course. The children were adorable as were Aunt Birdie and Uncle Amos, but, it was really Elmer, Buttercup, and Sparky that quite won me over. The book also features a generous dollop of suspense and one of Jen Turano's most despicable villains ever. To say that I loved Flights Of Fancy would be a major understatement. This fun and funny book with its free-spirited characters and exceptional writing was a true delight and I simply can't wait for the next book in the series... Diamond in the Rough

She's taking New York, and him, by storm! There are many adjectives that apply to a Jen Turano book. Delightful. Charming. Enchanting. Captivating. Fascinating. Engaging. Lovely. Scrumptious. All of these definitely apply to this Diamond In The Rough who, with the help of a certain English gentleman, is either going to turn into a diamond of the first water or a colossal disgrace during her first society season. But, oh, Poppy's madcap adventures are so much fun! As is Reginald's amusing attempts to reign her in and save her from herself. I'd swear I say this with every new release, but it's true. Diamond In The Rough is probably my favorite Jen Turano book...so far...or at least until the next American Heiresses book comes out. You really can't go wrong choosing to read a Jen Turano book. Whether you love historical romance or romantic comedy she's got you covered. The addition of a suspense thread to each book is icing on a very wonderful 'cake'! Diamond In The Rough is a definite must read in my book. What are you waiting for...? (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Will it be a simple visit..or the beginning of a new life..? Sarah E. Ladd is not an author that I've read very much of, though, the few that I have read were very good and enjoyed them a lot. I considered myself lucky to have caught The Cornwall Novels series right at its start and then getting to continue into this, the second book. While I liked the first book a tad more, The Thief Of Lanwyn Manor was still a very good Regency with some lovely Gothic romance overtones. Sarah E. Ladd has a real knack with creating her characters, making them relatable to today's readers while still retaining the historical aura of the Regency Era. I really enjoyed the The Thief Of Lanwyn Manor, it had more twists and turns than a secret passage. Just when you think you've figured out who the thief in the title is, well, another character starts acting suspicious. No one is quite as they first appear. The mystery is good and the romantic thread was charming and even a bit sweet. If you enjoy Regency Era novels or just Gothic inspired romance, this might be the book for you. Will he believe her? Can she trust him? I'm always up for trying new Love Inspired Suspense authors and I don't think that I've read a single LIS book that I truly disliked. Enter in Sharee Stover last year with her first book. I enjoyed that book so I knew I would like Silent Night Suspect. And I was right! To be honest, I liked this book even better. While I'm not a fan of amnesia tropes, I liked how the cause of Asia's amnesia was not the usual same ol', same ol'. Speaking of Asia, can I just say how much I love her name? There are so many Taylors, Autumns, Sarahs, and Rachels out there that it's nice to see a name I've never spotted in a book before. Anyway, back to what I was saying. While the amnesia theme has, at times, been overused, I felt that Sharee Stover managed to keep it from being a stale trope in Silent Night Suspect. Silent Night Suspect is a tense tale of danger, intrigue, betrayal, romance, faith, and forgiveness. I very much enjoyed the story and read it fairly quickly. Sharee Stover is fast becoming a seasoned author, which shows in this book, and I know that I will continue to look for, and enjoy, each new release. (I received a copy of this book from the author. Protecting Tanner Hollow: Four Romantic Suspense Novellas

4 women discover danger & love in a small town... I hadn't read Lynette Eason for quite awhile but a few months ago I found one of her titles from last year and picked it up to read. To be honest, I enjoyed that book much more than the previous one I had read. Anyway, when I saw that her new book, Protecting Tanner Hollow, was actually a collection of novellas I thought it sounded like fun. Yes, murder and mayhem is fun...to read about... I really did enjoy this novella collection. Each story had a connection, shared characters, etc. with the other ones in the book but they were each complete in their own right. I think one of my favorite things was that as the only author, Lynette Eason was able to keep her characters' personalities consistent, which, can be difficult across a multi-author collection/series. Sometimes it's nice to sit down and read a story that is complete but is short enough to avoid most interruptions and finish in a single sitting. Protecting Tanner Hollow allows you to do just that, immerse yourself in a shorter story of danger, intrigue, and romance, in small town America, four times to be exact. So, if romantic suspense and novellas are your thing this just might be the book for you... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Will this story make or break her...? I've been looking forward to reading Deadly Deceit since I read the first book in the Harbored Secrets series awhile back. Natalie Walters had started out strong and I wondered if that would continue in this book. My expecations were definitely met. I have to admit that I took a real dislike to Vivian when I read the first book in the series so when I saw that she was the heroine in this book I was a bit dubious. But, you know what? As the story progressed she grew on me until I rather liked her by the end. And Ryan, oh Ryan, let's just say he ain't that skinny geek from book one. Deadly Deceit is only Natalie Walters's second published book but her writing really comes across as that of an old pro. The suspense was developed much better in this book than the first but there were less emotional/psychological overtones that I did miss from book one. That being said, I really did enjoy both books, each for a different reason, and I am definitely looking forward to the final book in the series when it releases. All in all, a good book in a great series, and one that I would recommend to lovers of the romantic suspense genre. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Their past has come full circle... While I can't say that I even remotely begin to understand Brenna's choices, specifically turning to liquid 'help' when life got tough. But, what I can say is that it's about time someone peels back our plastic Sunday faces and dare to shine a little light of reality into fiction. Author Terri Blackstock has bared the unmentionable before in her Intervention series, where a mother deals with a child addicted to drugs, and, she has done it again in Smoke Screen. Life is not guaranteed to be perfect...even for Christians... Despite the rather heavy topics I found myself unable to put the book down, finishing it in a single evening. I enjoyed it immensely! It was the perfect blend of psychological drama and suspense, with a decent helping of romance. I've been a fan of Terri Blackstock since I started reading her books as a teenager. I'm pleased to say that I seem to like each one more than the last. This held true with Smoke Screen, which is going to wind up being one of my favorite books read this year. I loved Smoke Screen and it's one I would definitely recommend, whether you are a longtime reader of Terri Blackstock or if this is your first. Don't miss out on this emotionally moving and suspense filled story! (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

One mountain, two families... Oh, what a fun book to read! This is Mary Connealy at her best! It's been awhile since I've read one of her books but this one had such a cool cover and sounded interesting. Aiming For Love was exactly the type of story I was in the mood for! Humor, romance, and adventure are delightfully blended in this charming story set in the dramatic mountainous landscape of Colorado. I truly enjoyed Aiming For Love. It was nice to escape from the hum-drum of our modern world and drop right into a rip-roaring adventure complete with handsome cowboys. Mary Connealy's brand of cowboy fiction with quirky characters and a faith message is fun and a definite must read for fans of historical romance. I liked Aiming For Love but now find myself in the predicament of having to waaaait for Mary Connealy's next release in the Brides Of Hope Mountain series. I look forward to seeing the characters again and I especially look forward to finding out more about the Nordegren sisters' somewhat mysterious past and whether the Wardens will be able to get their ranch back from that mean ol' land hungry thief and and his hired goons. Will her past eliminate their future...permanently? Another exciting book in the Uncommon Justice series from the talented pen of Elizabeth Goddard! Always Look Twice is the second book in the series taking place a few months after the first the book and following in the same tradition of lots of danger and romance. Always Look Twice starts off with a bang, the kind that means murder, and takes readers on a wild ride of betrayal, murder, and secrets from the distant past. It was an interesting read, Elizabeth Goddard kept me guessing, and I especially loved the wilderness setting of the Grand Tetons. The Uncommon Justice series follows the three McKade brothers. In this one Heath McKade and Harper Reynolds are both tormented by violence in the past, perceived failure, and regret. Both of them have to decide if the will let it paralyze them or whether they will let love and faith help them heal. And, they have to survive and catch a maniacal killer while doing so. If you enjoy romantic suspense where the threads of past secrets affect the present this might be the series for you. Always Look Twice continued to build on the mystery surrounding the McKade's father, and, I for one, cannot wait to find out if they solve it in Elizabeth Goddard's next book... They each want very different things...or do they? So, I think the first thing that attracted me to A Distance Too Grand was the location where it is set. The Grand Canyon evokes a lot of mental images, even if you've never seen it in person, and I have to say that the dramatic and awe inspiring landscape really is a star in the book. It was another bonus that I've read some of Regina Scott's shorter historical novels and really enjoyed them. Her touches of humor and some exciting moments of danger accenting the historical romance always makes for some delightful reading. As I've read several suspense books lately it was nice to take a break and head back to what was essentially the Old West. Seriously, maybe I've watched one too many old John Wayne cavalry movies but those were the images that were running through my mind as I was reading this book. A Distance Too Grand was altogether an enjoyable read. Regina Scott's vivid descriptions of the Grand Canyon, the interesting historical tidbits about the early exploration of area, and her charming characters, well, except the villain as Old West villains are by nature very unpleasant, were nicely blended together. I was glad to find that this is the first book in the American Wonders Collection and I look forward to the next book in the series... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Dark Ambitions

A killer who will stop at nothing... It's been awhile since I've read one of Irene Hannon's romantic suspense novels. Even though Dark Ambitions is the third book in the Code Of Honor series it sounded good and I knew from past experience that her books are usually somewhat standalone. It's not often that a book's title matches its contents to perfection, but, Dark Ambitions does exactly that. Irene Hannon's tale of greed, betrayal, murder, and misplaced love is a story of how ambition can spiral downward into a darkness that is hard to escape. It will also keep you guessing. I had my suspicions about the mastermind's identity early on, nearly let the author sidetrack me several times, but I stuck with it, and, sure enough I was right. As romantic suspense novels go Dark Ambitions was a good read. It kept me intrigued and entertained while allowing a few deeper thoughts to slip in. Irene Hannon has been a name in Christian romantic suspense for awhile now and it's easy to see why. She balances just the right amounts of romantic tension and dangerous situations. Now, what I need to do is go back and read the previous books in the Code Of Honor series... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

What is real...and what isn't??? So, it's been a long time since I've read a Ted Dekker book, a really long time, but the title of this one, The Girl Behind The Red Rope, really caught my eye as did the fact that he co-authored it with his daughter, Rachelle Dekker. I haven't read any of her books as of yet but I was curious to find out how well the two would mesh. They did. Seamlessly. If you've ever read a Ted Dekker book you'll know that he's the king of creepy in the Christian fiction world and from The Girl Behind The Red Rope it's easy to see that Rachelle Dekker is following in her dad's footsteps. Trust me, this tale of one girl and her family trapped in a cult and controlled by fear is definitely up there on the weirdness scale. I know that this book has some allegory to it but I have to confess that I've never really 'gotten' allegory. So, other than saying that a main theme in the book is breaking free of our fears, especially from religious driven fear, well, I'm afraid that anything after that missed me. I can tell you, however, that The Girl Behind The Red Rope is a riveting tale. Hard to put down, I finished it in record time for a Dekker book. Ted Dekker and Rachelle Dekker have a winning combination together and I sincerely hope to see more collaborations from them in the future... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. She'll do anything to protect her little brother... Aside from the fact that this is an Alana Terry book, I think what really captured my attention was the rather enigmatic title. Termination Dust, what even is it? Sorry, you'll just have to read the book to find out. I didn't really read the blurb before starting the book on my Kindle. After all, it IS an Alana Terry book so I knew I wanted to read it. The Alaskan Refuge Christian Suspense series is a little different from the author's other series' as it relies a lot more on the romantic suspense angle. While I wasn't able to get into Termination Dust as much as I did the first book it was still a good story. Kimmie's single-minded determination to protect her little brother at all costs is very emotionally moving. And, sadly, the abuse and mental trauma they endure is quite realistic. But the overarching theme of hanging onto faith through even the darkest circumstances is encouraging for readers facing their own difficulties. Whether you are into gripping and gritty stories or you love fiction set in the vivid, and dangerous, Alaskan landscape Termination Dust and the rest of Alana Terry's edgy Alaskan Refuge Christian Suspense series is one you should check out. Living Lies

Will her secret finally destroy her... There are three basic types of debut novels. The kind that are painfully obvious are a first try, those that are so-so showing some promise with practice, and those you are surprised to find out are the author's debut. Living Lies was definitely one of the latter. I will confess that the suspense didn't quite engage me as much as it could have, it seemed like it was secondary to the plot. But. And that's the keyword, but, what thoroughly engaged every bit of my attention was Natalie Walters's compassionate and sensitive portrayal of a heroine learning to thrive amidst her struggles with depression. As well as another key character facing military related PTSD. I loved the main characters. Lane is giving and has a truly sweet heart towards those society tends to ignore. Charlie is a good man, kind but strong. And you really can't help falling in love with Lane's precocious son as well as Charlie's madcap dog. Living Lies was a good start to what I am sure will be a wonderful series. Author Natalie Walters shows great promise with this first novel and I look forward to returning to the small, seemingly idyllic, town of Walton... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Convergence

The past, present, and future collide... I think it was the dramatic cover which first caught my attention and after reading the back cover blurb I decided to take a chance on Convergence. You see, Ginny L. Yttrup is a new-to-me author. I'd heard of her before hut that was it. So, in my opinion there were some real pluses and some minuses in this book. On the plus side, beside the gorgeous cover, of course, is that the suspense is RIVETING, totally edge-of-your-seat-can-barely-breathe stuff. You'll also be kept guessing from the dramatic start to the very end. On the minus end was the simple fact that I found the bouncing between characters and timeframes to be confusing at best. Also some of the final revelations just left me shaking my head and asking "Why, why is this only coming out now?" There is a lot of romantic suspense out there so it's always a nice change of pace when the suspense, and not romance, is the star of the book. Convergence is one such story. Readers get the chance to delve deep into the characters' psyche instead of being distracted by flirtatious glances and increasing pulse rates. If you are into psychological suspense or have enjoyed Ginny L. Yttrup's previous books this just might be one for you to check into. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Sometimes truth IS much stranger than fiction... To be perfectly honest, I picked up The Yellow Lantern because it was part of the True Colors series and I had absolutely no idea what it was about. I hadn't even read the back cover blurb on my copy when I started reading. Boy, was I in for a shock right off the bat. Seriously! Right there on the first page the heroine wakes up after having been presumed dead and actually buried! Trust me, Angie Dicken knows how to hook her readers right from the start and keep them good and hooked. I thought it a bit ironic that this book is about grave robbers and just a few days ago I was watching a short youtube biography/documentary about two real people convicted of just that offense. Weird, right? Anyway, The Yellow Lantern is an excellent addition to the True Colors series and I enjoyed it very much. It's deliciously dark and morbid in places. Manipulation, fear, betrayal, greed, and murder all have their places. But there is also a strong thread of hope, through faith, through the love in friendship and the love in romance. Angie Dicken has nicely packaged all of these threads in an entertaining and riveting story with roots in real events from history. Definitely a book that I would recommend... The fate of the realm is in her voice... Fantasy has never been my genre of choice, though I have many fond childhood memories of wiling away the hours in Narnia and Middle Earth, but gradually I've been opening that door and allowing my horizons to broaden. I've actually seen Janalyn Voigt's name quite a bit, and it's all been positive, which is why I decided to give the Tales Of Faeraven a shot. DawnSinger is the first book in the series and in true fantasy fashion there is an epic quest, terrible dangers, betrayal, a taste of forbidden love, and even more importantly the story gets darker as the conclusion draws nearer. I was pleased to discover that Janalyn Voigt has created a world with quite a detailed history, language, flora and fauna, and landscape. The world is detailed but the story isn't bogged down by those details. The characters are interesting and you quickly come to like them, especially Shae, Kai, and Elcon. And the villain, oh, I hated him! I enjoyed DawnSinger, its characters and strange creatures, and I look forward to returning to the land of Faeraven in the next book in the series... Can they trust anyone around them? I think I probably say this with every Lisa Harris book that I read, but, I will say it again. I think Deadly Intentions is my favorite one so far. I loved it! It was tense. It was riveting. It was gripping. It was action-packed romantic suspense at its best! There are some books that are impossible to put down, Deadly Intentions was one of those. Seemingly ripped from today's headlines this story of danger and betrayal was as relevant as it was entertaining. Seriously, if you want to sleep tonight, don't read this chillingly plausible story right before bed....or at least leave your light on... Lisa Harris is one of my all-time favorite romantic suspense authors and she just seems to get better and better with each new release. Deadly Intentions is a perfect example of that fact. If you love a story with equal amounts of danger, intrigue, and romance, with a faith perspective, I would highly recommend Lisa Harris's latest novel... The past and future are entirely intertwined.... I've never read a Ronie Kendig book before. There, I said it. Don't shoot me. I'm not exactly sure why I hadn't read one. I mean, I've heard a lot of good stuff about them. But, for some reason I just didn't. Until now. I have no clue why Storm Rising was the one to catch my attention, but, it did. I went into Storm Rising not knowing what to expect. I mean, I did know that Ronie Kendig did several series about elite military types but that was it. What a got was an international thriller with apocalyptic repercussions that was slightly reminiscent of a Ted Dekker book. While I can't say that I'm a diehard fan I can say that I will be looking forward to reading the next installment in The Book Of The Wars series. I found the idea behind the story, a book with the outcomes of past and future wars, to be quite fascinating. And, I'm curious where the search for said book will take our band of heroes....will Leif and Iskra finally find what they are each searching for...? Family for Gracie

She got a lot more than she bargained for... I've been waiting for A Family For Gracie since Gracie was first introduced. She was the girl always helping others and wanting nothing more than a family of her own to care for. She seemed lonely and even a bit neglected by her relatives. I was beyond curious about what kind of story she would get. I was actually a bit surprised at the direction, marriage of convenience, that Amy Lillard took. But, it was perfect for Gracie, the storyline allowed her to shine, well, at least as much as an Amish girl can sparkle. As with every other Amy Lillard book that I've read, I sincerely enjoyed A Family For Gracie. I quickly became emotionally invested in the lives of the characters. Seriously, there were several times I wanted to knock some sense into Matthew's head! Totally not an Amish reaction, I know. The kids were adorable, especially the little scamp Henry, and I couldn't help but laugh at their antics. For anyone that has read the story all I'll have to say is "chicken and ducklings." Humorous and poignant moments are expertly blended into a lovely, and original, Amish romance that tugs at the heart. (I received a copy of this book from the author. A Reluctant Belle

She'll take on the world single-handed... While I enjoyed the first book in The Daughtry House Series this is the one that I've looked forward to the most. The intelligent, shy, and forward thinking bookworm, Joelle had quite captured my attention. In some ways she reminded me of one of my favorite fictional heroines, Jo March. Plus I just had to know why Joelle despised Schuyler so much... A Reluctant Belle is a fascinating look into the post Civil War south, both the good and the bad. The Reconstruction era was a time fraught with danger for all people. It was also a time of great kindness and great sacrifice. Beth White skillfully weaves those threads into a tale of intrigue and romance that will tug at the heart. I really enjoyed this book but I did have one concern while reading. Two terms for political beliefs were used in the book, however, today, those descriptive terms are vastly different from what they were 150 years ago. We still use the terms but they are now stereotypically applied to the opposite political parties, which may be a little confusing for modern readers. Anyway, Beth White is a master of teaching little known aspects of Southern history in such an entertaining way, and with such memorable characters, that the reader hardly feels like they are learning history at all. A Reluctant Belle is both thought provoking and inspiring. It leaves the reader wondering what is in store for the Daughtry sisters and their fledgling hotel as these young women take on prejudice and hatred with love and faith... Is it too late to find the girl? Is it too late for them? I've really been looking forward to Elizabeth Goddard's first foray into full-length romantic suspense novels since I first heard several months ago that it would be releasing. Some authors have difficulty switching from either short to long stories or long to short stories, Elizabeth Goddard had no such trouble with Never Let Go. Exciting, spine-tingling, and definitely action-packed, from the very start, this book was a great start to the Uncommon Justice series. As a person fascinated by family history from a very young age, I found the heroine's profession to be unusual and perfectly intriguing. I had heard of genealogists before but the term 'forensic genealogist' was a new one to me. I sincerely enjoyed Never Let Go, from the dramatic cover to the very last paragraph. The characters are engaging, the mystery is engrossing, the settings are striking, and the back-and-forth tug of romance between Willow and Austin is just right. Not to mention the elements of faith woven throughout the story are a perfect complement to the backdrop intrigue fraught with danger. Whether you love the Elizabeth Goddard's shorter books or just romantic suspense in general, Never Let Go is a MUST read. Don't miss a single page! (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. The Secrets of Paper and Ink

Life can be messy, painful...and beautiful... I read Lindsay Harrel's debut novel not that long ago, it truly moved me in a way that a novel seldom does. So it naturall followed that I would want to read her next book when it came out. The Secrets Of Paper And Ink was another excellent read, just a little different from its predecessor. I finished the book a short while ago but I know that it is one that I will be pondering, digesting, for awhile yet. This book features the intertwined stories of three women. Two of them are contemporary and the third is from the Victorian Era. Over a century spans their lives but they intersect in a way that could only be called a God thing. Each of them has been hurt, by circumstances, and by the people closest to them. And each of them must work their way through the pain and find their identity in the only One who will always be there for them, and for us. This is the overarching theme that will resonate with women readers of all ages. A thought-provoking story, The Secrets Of Paper And Ink is a book to both enjoy and ponder. It's easy to get immersed in the lives of Sophia, Ginny, and Emily, but it is equally as easy to see the parallels in our own lives. To see that when life hands you lemons, search for the sugar that can only come from the hand of God, and make it into lemonade. Lindsay Harrel may be a new author in what I would call women's fiction but she is also one to watch. I for one, am looking forward to reading more from this talented author. Danger looms for three Ladies Of Intrigue... Over the last year or so I've really come to enjoy Michelle Griep's historical romance so when I saw Ladies Of Intrigue it was a must read for me. I was curious to see if she could write novellas as well as she does her full length novels. While the title indicates suspense I found that Ladies Of Intrigue was more historical romance with a healthy dash of adventure. What could be more adventurous than smugglers, a Native American uprising, and a haunted house with many secrets...? One thing that I would like to note is that those who have difficulty with smaller print will not have that problem with this book. The font size is really nice and easy to read. I found Michelle Griep's novella collection to be a fairly quick and easy read. The settings, Cornwall, Dakota Territory, and St. Paul, Minnesota, were quite interesting. And I really liked the fact that the stories covered the length of the 1800s, 1815, 1862, and 1890. So, if you are looking for a trio of adventurous and romantic novellas from a talented author Ladies Of Intrigue would be a great choice. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Mark of the Raven

Is she a killer or will she discover the Light? There are two kinds of fantasy novels out there; charmingly captivating, and deliciously dark. Mark Of The Raven is one of the latter. I don't know what it was that caught my attention, I haven't read any of Morgan L. Busse's previous books. Maybe it was the gorgeous eerily mysterious cover, which is much like the heroine herself, or maybe because I was just in the mood for a fantasy novel that promised to be a shadowy tale of danger and intrigue. Oh, I got just that and more! This dark and absorbing tale will have you, as it did me, immersed in the battle between The Light and the Dark Lady played out in the sinister halls of the ancestral home of the Ravenwoods and also in the dreams of the powerful and the powerless. While aimed more at the YA market Mark Of The Raven is just as appealing to adults. There was something about Selene's struggle with upholding family expectations and her natural bent to protect those weaker that will capture the attention of readers both YA and adults alike. Fantasy fans are in for a real treat with Morgan L. Busse's new book and will quickly find themselves, like me, impatiently awaiting the next release in the Ravenwood Saga series. Seriously, I HAVE to know what happens! (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Will she give them a second chance at love...? Christmas was, and is, a few months away as I read A Wells Landing Christmas. Where I live the trees are in the process of turning color and the nights are getting downright crisp but Amy Lillard transported me to the depths of an Oklahoma winter in just a matter of pages. As with the rest of her books I found A Wells Landing Christmas to be a moving story, sometimes a little bittersweet, filled with many poignant moments and even a few chuckle-out-loud spots. I will confess that I don't read a lot of Christmas books but this one captured me from the start and I finished it in very short order. Over the course of several books the characters of Wells Landing have become like old friends and it is so much fun to to return to that community, especially at Christmastime. And, of course, Zeb, Ivy, and Yonnie quickly became new friends. A Wells Landing Christmas is a wonderful holiday read, whether it is the holiday season or a hot Christmas in July day. You'll be glad you read Amy Lillard's latest emotionally moving Amish story, I know I am... (I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Will faith transform her and those around her? Looking for a soft watercolor view of the people and events in the Bible? Better just move on now. Looking for the vivid colors of a realistic, sometimes gritty, story of faith overcoming unimaginable circumstances? By The Waters Of Babylon will be right up your alley. Mesu Andrews's trademark exquisite attention to historical detail and uncompromising belief in the truth of Scripture bring to life some of the most memorable characters in a way that makes the reader feel as if they, too, are standing there in the ancient Holy Land. For me By The Waters Of Babylon was a fairly quick read and so very hard to put down. It was also one of those stories that left me thinking about the characters even as I went about other tasks. There was something about Merari's determination to believe in Yahweh despite everything happening to her and around her that I found to be intriguing, convicting, and most definitely inspiring. Don't miss Mesu Andrews's breathtaking journey through darkness and into hope on the long road road from Jerusalem to Babylon... (I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. Falling in love isn't always easy... Another great story from one of my favorite Amish fiction authors! I've been looking forward to A Love For Leah since I read the first book in the Pontotoc Mississippi Series earlier this year. And as anticipated author Amy Lillard delivered a thought-provoking story of faith, family, and love. Each of Amy Lillard's novels takes on everyday topics, and life choices that, face the Amish, and frequently the Englishers alike. A Love For Leah takes on more than one, including the old-as-time question of whether love really does conquer all or if the differences, especially in matters of faith, are insurmountable. I really enjoyed A Love For Leah and and read it in pretty short order. Even though Amish fiction has not been a go-to genre in awhile I find myself unable to put an Amy Lillard book down. And when I DO have to put it aside I find myself wondering about the characters and pondering what I would do if I were in similar shoes. And, of course, now that I've finished I find myself not so patiently waiting to find out if and when their might be some more Pontotoc Mississippi stories. Will their hard work succeed or fall apart? I wanted to read The Pattern Artist because it featured characters working for the pattern company, Butterick. I wanted to read The Fashion Designer because I had really liked the first book and I really wanted to know if the little group of friends had succeeded in their new business. I have to admit that I did have a bit of a hard time at first. There were several points of view and they sometimes changed so rapidly that it was a little difficult to follow at times. Once I got into the rhythm of things it was a lot easier and I enjoyed the story. It was kind of fun watching the characters, who have quickly become like friends, as they struggle to get their fledgling business off the ground. They face a lot of ups and downs, and unexpected romance, but through it each of them learn to rely even more the only One who will see them through everything that life can throw their way. The Fashion Designer was only the second book that I've read by author Nancy Moser and I'm both curious and kind of hoping that she might continue on into the next chapter of their endeavor. Could these pickles literally be to-die-for? OK, so there was just something about Kappy King And The Pickle Kaper that left me reading late into the night, or rather early in the morning. Maybe it was the growing friendship between Kappy and Edie, the fact that romance is not the main theme, maybe it was the adorably naughty Beagle Elmer.... As more of a cozy mystery this book has a fun vibe to it. Yeah, I know what I'm saying: Is murder ever 'fun'? Well, as a matter of fact, yes, especially when it is such a neat story from author Amy Lillard. I'll have to make a little confession, while I guessed the killer pretty early on in book one I totally didn't here, though, I actually guessed some of the key circumstances before the big revelation. I really enjoyed Kappy King And The Pickle Kaper and I can't wait to find out what trouble and adventures Amy Lillard will bring to Kappy, Edie, Jimmy, and Elmer next... Can they see past their pain and suspicion? Where to start? I've only read a couple of Michelle Griep's books but that was all it took for me to fall in love with her no nonsense writing style. A little on the gritty side, which I really like, her books, The Captured Bride included, are filled with plenty of danger, intrigue, and, of course, romance. In addition the emotional tug of the characters on the reader is unmistakable and probably one of the best parts of the book. I'll admit that The Captured Bride is the first book, it's actually book 3, that I've read in the Daughters Of The Mayflower series. I did find that while it is part of a series it can definitely be read standalone. Of course, now I have it read it I'm going to have to go back and dive into the first two. David carries the weight of centuries... Barbour is best known for their sweet historical romances and novella collections so my curiosity was piqued when I read the blurb for No Less Days and, even though it is marked as suspense, it sounded like it was a Speculative fiction book. In the tradition of authors like Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker, Amanda G. Stevens takes readers on a wild and imaginative ride, delving into some of mankind's deepest thoughts and darkest questions. Just a note for Barbour fans, like the other authors I mentioned, this book is quite gritty in places and even has a couple of words that may or may not bother some readers. No Less Days was such a different story from what I ordinarily read that I had a hard time putting it down. Amanda G. Stevens kept me interested to the end and left me wondering what might happen to David and the others like him. It seemed like the author left it open to the possibility of another book, so, here's hoping... Can they see beyond the past to find a future? Through the My Heart Belongs In... series I have been introduced to more than one new-to-me author, Rebecca Jepson is one of that group. As I've read through the series I've fallen in love with heroines and heroes, I've enjoyed fascinating locations and historical settings, and, of course, I've found that some have been a little more favorite than others. My Heart Belongs In Glenwood Springs, Colorado: Millie's Resolve is one of my top favorites. There was something about the story, the characters, the setting, I can't exactly pin it down to a single reason, but just couldn't seem to put the book down. I finished it in one day, more like in an afternoon, which is pretty good for me this time of year. My Heart Belongs In Glenwood Springs, Colorado: Millie's Resolve is a great historical romance with some valuable lessons on following God's leading even when it hurts, the importance of communication and, in the words of actor Spencer Tracy “never assume(ing).” Rebecca Jepson's contribution to this series is a good one and I know that I will be watching for more from this author in the future. They both have much to learn about life & love... I've read a number of Janice Thompson's contemporary romantic comedies so I was pleased to see that she had a title coming in the My Heart Belongs In... series. And when I found out that it was set during the California Gold Rush era I was even more interested. I have to admit that sometimes I wanted to give Abby a good shaking because of her stubborn naivety. But then the same went for Samuel's stubborn self righteousness. Those two really are quite the pair. In addition to Abby and Samuel, My Heart Belongs In San Francisco, California: Abby's Prospects was populated with some delightfully fun and quirky characters, as well as an oily charming villain. The use of a few phrases/terms that wouldn't come into actual usage for a few decades was only a tiny hiccup and didn't distract from my enjoyment of this truly sweet historical romance. Janice Thompson's newest release, My Heart Belongs In San Francisco, California: Abby's Prospects, is a lovely addition to the My Heart Belongs In... series and a must read for all fans. Judah's Wife: A Novel of the Maccabees

Can one simple family change an entire country? Judah's Wife was one of the most different novels that I've read. It wasn't the easiest book to read, and it took me quite awhile. I found myself reading a few pages, most of the chapters are pretty short, and then having to take some time to digest what I'd just read. In some ways it seemed more like reading a history book. But, oh, what a history! Epic battles, divine miracles, and a family that must make terrible sacrifices during one of the most momentous times in Jewish history! I never really connected with Leah or Judah but I found their struggles to be one of the most interesting parts of the story. They are just ordinary people but it is the ordinary people that God so often calls to do extraordinary things and to give of themselves in ways that the modern American reader can scarcely imagine. In Judah's Wife author Angela Hunt brings to life the lost years between the Old and New Testaments, a time that was harsh and unyielding, and is oft neglected in Christian fiction. She weaves a poignant story of love, loss, and sacrifice that will stay with the reader after that last page is turned. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Will the pursuit of justice cost them everything? Around the time most girls wanted to become fashion designers I wanted to be an archaeologist. And that's what really attracted me to The Tempering Agent, the heroine is an archaeologist in Egypt. Talk about some amazing history and a totally exotic location! Toss in plenty of suspense and romance and you get a book that I wanted to read. I did notice several references to what assume must be another book. I do think this book can be read standalone, but, if the opportunity presents itself I would like to read the other one as well. As a rockhound myself, I think my absolute favorite part of The Tempering Agent is how, author Victoria Pitts Caine chose to head each chapter with some great tidbits of information on gemstones and metals, all related to one key artifact in the story. Victoria Pitts Caine delivers a simple, easy to read, story packed with danger, intrigue, romance, and betrayal. It's also the story of a girl trying to find her way through grief and back into a life of faith and love. I enjoyed my little jaunt into Egypt and the thrilling world of archaeology and antiquities... (I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Expect the unexpected.... Having read, and loved, a couple of the books from her Bloodline Trilogy, I really looked forward to checking out Jordyn Redwood's Love Inspired Suspense. Fugitive Spy was the perfect place to start! I loved it! The story started off with a bang and took me, as the reader, on a wild ride of danger, intrigue, and romance. Jordyn Redwood's own career as nurse really shines through in all of the medical details, no matter how tiny. I think that was probably one of my top favorite parts of the story, I didn't have to wonder if certain things were accurate or not. Another favorite part of the story is that Fugitive Spy did not in any way go in the direction I expected. It is not your run-of-the-mill Love Inspired Suspense at all. Choices from the past affect their future... For several years now Amy Lillard has been one of my main go-to Amish fiction authors so I was pretty excited to find out that she had a new series coming out, A Home For Hannah being the first book. One of the things I like about her books is that she writes about Amish communities in locations that we wouldn't traditionally think of as Amish, this time in Mississippi. While I am in a much different season of life than Hannah and Aaron, Amy Lillard painted them in such a sympathetic light that I was totally invested in their story, their circumstances, the choices they made. Even when I had to go about other things I found myself thinking, and wondering, about the characters and what might happen next. It really didn't take me long to read A Home For Hannah, as with most Amy Lillard books, and I definitely enjoyed my time in Pontotoc. If you are an Amish fiction fan this is a series to check out! Sea Before Us Sunrise at Normandy 01

2 hurting people find love in the midst of war... I think it's been a couple of years since I've read a Sarah Sundin book but when I heard that she had a new series coming out with 'Normandy' in the name I was intrigued. I'll freely admit that, while I've heard how important D-Day was and even knew the names of at least two of the beaches, I actually really wasn't that aware of the facts behind it. I can't say that anymore. In The Sea Before Us author Sarah Sundin weaves a story of loss, love, and longing, within the facts of one of the most pivotal events in WWII history. The sheer magnitude of the planning behind D-Day is staggering! But make no mistake, The Sea Before Us is by no means dry and boring with endless dusty dates. It did take me a bit to get into the story, I had to take some time to warm up to Dorothy, though I loved Wyatt right off. But then, wham!, I was hooked and couldn't put it down! I read a good half the book in about 3 hours or so! Moving and inspirational with a dash of mystery The Sea Before Us is a MUST read for fans of Sarah Sundin and WWII historical fiction! Probing: Cycle Three of the Harbingers Series
by
Frank Peretti and Angela Hunt and Bill Myers
J Augustine
, January 09, 2018
The Harbingers has been quite a series so far. Each novella has been a supernatural ride into the unbelievable. While Probing wasn't quite as creepy as the previous cycles it was certainly stranger. Just read the back cover blurb and you'll see what I mean, reality TV that may be a little too real, pirates with some secrets hidden up their billowing sleeves, children that may not be children at all, and a small town hiding something so frightening no one would ever believe it. Supernatural suspense was a fairly new term for me. I've read several of Frank Peretti's and Bill Myers's previous books that were somewhat similar but it's only recently that I've seen that term applied as its own genre. But it's a genre that I'm starting to enjoy. Some changes were in store for the characters in Probing and I'm curious to find out how that will affect them in the cycles to come. At any rate, if you love spooky supernatural stories with a definite Christian bent you really should check out this book, and series, from the talented pens of Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, and Alton Gansky. Death at Thorburn Hall
by
Julianna Deering

, December 21, 2017
Can Drew find another killer before it's too late? Can this really be goodbye to Drew, Madeline, and Nick, at least for now? No!!! I've been a fan of this series since I bought the first book and was transported to a time and world long gone. I have eagerly awaited each new book and Death At Thorburn Hall was no exception. I will tell you this, a few, a scant few, of my suspicions were founded. But, oh, did Julianna Deering do an excellent job sidetracking me and making me feel so clever and yet I turned out to be so wrong, at least until just a few pages before the revelation of the murderer's identity. Normally, I love to be right but in this case I just enjoyed the story, and the act of puzzling things over, so much that I didn't mind at all. Lots of period atmosphere, a puzzling mystery, no one being as they first appear, and a truly cold-blooded killer, made for some delightfully chilling reading. There is truly nothing like a cozy murder, or two, or more, for curling up on an otherwise inauspicious grey winter day. Death At Thorburn Hall fit the bill perfectly. If you enjoy historical mysteries you really should check out this book and the rest of Julianna Deering's wonderful Drew Farthering Mysteries! (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. House on Foster Hill

Heart-stopping debut novel! What an amazing novel! It is so darkly hopeful! I know, that sounds like an oxymoron, but some of the darkest stories blaze with faith and hope. The House On Foster Hill is one of those stories. Jaime Jo Wright takes readers on a riveting and chilling ride as women a century apart fight to protect those they love, and the innocent victims of generations of evil. Jaime Jo Wright handled the dual timelines with the skill of a seasoned author. I enjoyed both Kaine's and Ivy's stories equally. Each one was chilling, mystifying, and so delightfully creepy in the best of ways. I loved every bit of The House On Foster Hill, from the eerie cover to the very last page, and I'm most definitely looking forward to future releases from this very talented new author! Lady Jayne Disappears
by
Joanna Davidson Politano
J Augustine
, December 04, 2017
Rarely does a cover and/or title become the deciding factor on whether I want to read a book. But Lady Jayne Disappears was one of the exceptions. I didn't even read the back cover blurb before deciding that I wanted to read this book. The use of grayscale and a dramatic 'vanishing' font made for a very mysterious and effective image. There are several types of debut books, ranging from “I can't even finish this” to “this book was so good I wish there were more books available from this author.” Lady Jayne Disappears was definitely in the latter category. It was truly hard to believe that this is Joanna Davidson Politano's debut novel! I was hooked by this Gothic romance from the start! A couple of historical anachronisms did not deter my enjoyment of the story one iota. I was very quickly immersed in Joanna Davidson Politano's richly mysterious atmosphere peopled with characters that are never as they first appear and all have hidden motives of one kind or another. This deliciously spooky novel had more twists and turns than an English manor and I was quite surprised by some of the final revelations! (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. In the Shadow of Denali

Tracie Peterson

Will love...or death...find them in Denali? Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse return once again to the vast expanse that would become the 49th state. The magic word 'Alaska' was really all it took for me to take an interest In The Shadow Of Denali. I've read books from the authors individually but this is the first one that they co-authored. I had a hard time connecting with the main characters at times, finding them both to be quite naive. But I did appreciate Allan's journey to forgiveness, a struggle, which for a myriad of reasons, many of us are familiar with. For me at least, the real stars of the book were the Curry Hotel and Denali 'The Great One'. Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse brought them both life with such vivid descriptions it was almost like being there. In The Shadow Of Denali is a sweet romance with some dashes of danger from a nasty villain and especially the capricious Alaskan weather. Fans of both authors will enjoy this trip to Alaska of the 1920s. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

With This Ring A Novella Collection of Proposals Gone Awry

Love doesn't quite happen like these 4 young ladies planned... The Husband Maneuver by Karen Witemeyer I'd not read any of Karen Witemeyer's stories until I picked up this novella collection. And what a hilarious introduction! It was a quick read and I enjoyed the Dead Eye Dan 'excerpts' at the beginning of each chapter. Her Deadly Unintended by Regina Jennings Aahh, Regina Jennings. She's been a favorite of mine for several years and this novella was no exception. Laugh-out-loud funny, with a dash of danger, and wrapped in a coming-of-age romance that is delight to read. Runaway Bride by Mary Connealy Mary Connealy is another favorite author. There is something that I just love about her westerns with her trademark mix of romance, humor, and blazing guns. This novella provided all of that in a small, but very enjoyable, package. Engaging The Competition by Melissa Jagears Melissa Jagears is still a fairly new-to-me author since I've only previously read one of her full-length books. This novella was a real, but fun, switch for me because I actually came to like the hero a little bit better than the heroine. Overall A delightful collection of novellas from four wonderful authors! If you enjoy any or all of these authors, like novellas, or just love a good story with plenty of humor and romance With This Ring just might be to book for you. To the Farthest Shores
by
Elizabeth Camden

They must overcome a painful past to find a future... To The Farthest Shores is one of Elizabeth Camden's most character driven stories yet. They are not cookie-cutter, ultra-perfect people, they are real and their struggles, especially with forgiveness and trust, will resonate with pretty much all readers. The details of Japanese culture and the intricate nuances of courtesy and honor were fascinating. And the suspense angle, that tied in with the Japan element, made things doubly as interesting. But, for me, personally, the best part was the lovely descriptions of the early cultured pearl industry. If you are looking for a book with flawed characters who battle themselves and each other as they struggle to find lasting love and peace. If you love historical fiction. If you are a fan of Elizabeth Camden. Or D all the above, you just might want to check out To The Farthest Shores. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. A Love Transformed

Returning 'home' isn't always easy... 'Montana' and 'sapphires' were the only two words I needed to see to know that I wanted to read A Love Transformed and the rest of the Sapphire Brides series. Of course, it really didn't hurt that it was written by one of the Christian fiction authors that I've read the longest, Tracie Peterson. I will confess that I haven't read the first two books yet, I have them on my shelf, but I was told that they could be read standalone which, I think, will prove to be true. Thanks to the talents of author Tracie Peterson, A Love Transformed is both a sweet historical romance and a bit suspenseful. The diabolically clandestine affairs, related to WWI, that endanger our heroine and her children added some lovely tension to the storyline. Fans of Tracie Peterson are in for a treat as she returns her writing to Montana, the state she herself resides in. A Love Transformed was a good finish to the Sapphire Brides series and I am looking forward to going back and reading the first two. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. The Assault: Cycle Two of the Harbingers Series
by
Frank Peretti and Angela Hunt and Bill Myers
J Augustine
, October 10, 2017
The world is going crazy and only they can see it... Super creepy! Supernatural! Yep, just another chilling jaunt with the Harbingers! Each of the paperback books contains what they call a 'cycle', meaning four novellas – one from each author. I picked up the first one because I've been a fan of both Frank Peretti and Bill Myers since I was a kid and devoured half a dozen books a week. I was hooked by book one so when I got the chance to read the second cycle called The Assault, episodes 5-8, I grabbed it. Definitely a darker series, book two is even spookier and delves further into the horror aspect of the intertwined storyline. One of the things that I liked about these stories is actually what the authors established as Rule #2 for their collaboration, each author writes a novella that builds on the previous one, all characters are present but each story is told from a single perspective. As each epsiode builds on the previous one it has been quite interesting to follow the four adult characters as they begin to understand, and even find a grudging respect, for each other. They are starting to form a true team as they must work together and utilize each person's strengths and gifts. If you are a fan of any or all of the four authors, Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, Alton Gansky, or you enjoy Christian horror/supernatural suspense stories, you've definitely got to try The Assault and its predecessor! Murder on the Moor

Who or what will Drew find on the moors? I have been hooked on the Drew Farthering novels since I bought the first one a few years ago. There is just something about author Julianna Deering's suspenseful and dark, yet cozy and fun, mysteries that keeps me coming back and eagerly anticipating each new release. Murder On The Moor more than lived up to its lovely cover and surpassed my high expectations. I did figure out part of the mystery, half of the killer's identity and a couple of other things, but believe you me, I was in for some real surprises! The final showdown was so exciting and who-done-it was a bit of a shocker! I enjoyed every minute of reading Murder On The Moor, trying to guess who did what, figure out motivations, as well as the wonderful 1920's era British setting, and you just can't beat those quirky English place names like Bunting's Nest... Fans of this series and of Julianna Deering are in for a real mysterious and even spooky treat in the latest Drew Farthering Mystery. (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Invitation

, October 04, 2017
The supernatural comes to life... Spooky. Creepy. Eerie. Unearthly. They may all essentially be the same word, but, believe me, they ALL apply to Invitation. I wanted to read this book for two reasons: Frank Peretti and Bill Myers. I grew up on The Cooper Kids and Forbidden Doors so I had something of an inkling what I might be in for. The other two authors, Angela Hunt and Alton Gansky, are new to me, though, I've heard good things about both of them. Yeah, I kinda got what I asked for. A book I couldn't put down. One that I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to finish. And caused me to keep the lights on after I turned that last page as I tried to go to sleep. Anyone who has ever read a Peretti or Myers book knows exactly what I'm talking about. Once you start, you can't stop reading, and Invitation was no exception. The idea of taking four very different characters in four interconnected stories, each one from a different viewpoint penned by four authors was quite interesting and they pulled it off well. I'm curious to see where these four talented authors will be taking this story, and characters, in the future. I know there are a number of episodes already out, and there will be more 4-episode books, so I have some good reading to look forward to.... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. From This Moment
by
Elizabeth Camden
J Augustine
, October 04, 2017
Is Boston big enough for them both? Elizabeth Camden has quickly become one of my absolute favorite historical fiction authors and I eagerly await each new release. From the moment I first saw that gorgeous cover I wanted to read From This Moment, and when I found out that there was a suspense thread running through the story I was even more excited. From This Moment is about some very flawed characters, not the ones we usually call flawed, but genuinely flawed people who make some real and pretty big mistakes. They jump to conclusions, push their way through things like a battering ram, are totally hardheaded, lash out at each other, and just generally make all of the relationship mistakes that real people actually do. There were times I really didn't like any of them, but that just proved to me how talented Elizabeth Camden is in her craft. I was totally involved in the characters lives, riding the emotional rollercoasters, and just immersed in the setting. That's one of the things that I love about this author, her ability to completely immerse the reader into, not only the story, but also into the very time period itself. From This Moment is a wonderful historical romance with a dash of mystery, a tense showdown with the villain, and one that will make readers delve down into our own often poor reactions to those closest to us. Justice Buried

The answers lie in the past and the present... I have to admit that I haven't read the first book in this series, YET, but when I saw Justice Buried was releasing this month I knew that it was one I wanted to read. I love romantic suspense and Patricia Bradley is on my want-to-read list whenever I see an upcoming or new title from her. I was not disappointed in the least with Justice Buried as Patricia Bradley dropped readers right into the action on the first page and keeps them guessing to the very last. I love trying to solve the case myself when I'm reading romantic suspense or mysteries, and I did figure out quite a bit of this one, however, the identity of a villain did surprise me a bit. An exciting tale with lots of twists and turns, the fact that it takes place in a museum and the heroine is conservator was icing on the cake for me, Justice Buried was a riveting and totally enjoyable read. Can't wait for the next book in the series to come out... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

For the Record

He isn't quite the hero she expected... I think this is about the 4th, or so, Regina Jennings book that I've read. Read and most definitely enjoyed. Like the others there is plenty of romance and laugh-out-loud moments, but For The Record also seemed to have a little more danger and mystery, elements that I really liked. I'm just sorry to be saying goodbye to the characters, like Betsy, who have become friends over the Ozark Mountain Romance series. In many ways For The Record is a coming-of-age story, Betsy is determined to make a financial go of things to ease the burden on her family but she's also a little naive and starry-eyed. But as she and Joel butt heads and cross words she begins to grow up beyond the silly notion of a handsome prince on a white charger and to fall in love with a very real, and sometimes flawed, man. Whether you love historical romance or a good Regina Jennings book, For The Record is the perfect choice to while away a few hours in delicious reading. The Mark of the King

Will hope and love conquer all? There are all kinds of historical novels out there; from light pieces that entertain to heavy tomes that stupefy. And then there are special books like Jocelyn Green's latest, The Mark Of The King. These books go beyond the fluff into the blood and tears of the people who live in that time, and yet, they are by no means dry as you become immersed in the lives of characters that quickly feel like real people. Jocelyn Green is one such author, I've been a fan of hers since I read her first Civil War novel, as she so totally involves and immerses you in the era that your imagination is captured and transported to a time so like and unlike the one we live in now. To be honest, all I needed to see was the author's name on the cover and I knew this was one book I HAD to and WAS going to read. The Mark Of The King lived up to, and surpassed, my anticipation. Sometimes it was a little hard to read, life 300 years ago was no walk in the park, but I just couldn't seem to put it down, even to sleep. Even when I did put it down the story kept nibbling around the edges of my mind as I did other things. The characters quickly became friends and I felt each tragedy and triumph alongside them. If you are looking for a Christian historical with grit and romance, a story rich in detail, where the characters come alive, I would highly recommend The Mark Of The King from one of Christian fiction's most talented authors, Jocelyn Green. Recruits

A sci-fi adventure for all ages... I don't read a lot of science fiction, never have, in fact, it is probably one the two genres that I've read the least. So why did I pick up Recruits, which is so obviously sci-fi from the cover on down? It's simple, because of the author. I've been hooked on Thomas Locke's science fiction and fantasy books since I first read The Spectrum Chronicles over ten years ago. Now, all I need to do is see the name on the cover and I know it's a book I have to read. Recruits has everything a YA sci-fi book could need, from travel between planets, heart pumping battles, some romance, and an epic quest that only these two brothers with their very different talents can fulfill by working as a true team. Adults, also, are sure to enjoy this thrilling galactic adventure from Thomas Locke, a man truly solid in his craft whether writing under this name or Davis Bunn. As I said, sci-fi isn't my genre of choice but as anticipated I had a hard time putting down Recruits, just too much excitement and adventure awaiting me on the next page. Now I have to waaaiiit until the next book comes out..... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
