Otomen Volume 5

I liked getting a better feel for Ryo as a character. Although I am still confused what she thinks of Asuka. We still haven't gotten her to speak up there. I felt the festival dragged on a bit too long. Juta needs to be more honest about himself. The longer he goes, the worse the fallout. I think he is wrong about the truth reaction but the end still cracked me up.

Haha, I do love this series! Birthday revelations bring Asuka closer to Ryo and her father and then... Bring on the flowers...and more flowers...and more... Yes another boy hides his love of flowers then is set free upon the world (Asuka what have you unleashed?!)! I loved the Beach bar the boys and Ryo work together to save. Several overlapping compitions, beach fun, and lovely ladies make for a fun break from school! I was either constantly smiling or laughing while reading this. All the happy feels

Dorothy Must Die 04 End of Oz
by

3.5 stars Well it tried to make a comeback. About on par with the second book, but nowhere near as good as the first. Beats the third book that almost cost me my interest in the series. I do like how the Nome King's role was more tied in and I loved the appearance of Langwidere and the Wheelers. That added a fun element and now has me wanting to both see the Return to Oz and start reading the original books again. And for that I thank Danielle Paige. I am not sure with how it ended and the domino effect created in how Dorothy is finally thwarted. Not to mention the cliffhanger ending that can be an end or open us up for more. I just don't know. I wanted more explained into what happened to Oz, GLinda, Glamora and the Order at the end and I feel life that wasn't answered to my satisfaction. So many things I want to say on the end but cannot without spoiling it. It is not a bad ending, just not enough explained.

Half amusing, but extremely redundant. Honestly the title is half the book on repeat! But any parent can also relate to the feeling it shares. Perfect for anyone who has ever tried to put a kid to sleep when the don't want to. Also a fun gift idea for soon-to-be or new parents or a night-time babysitter.

Last Song Before Night

This was boring! Beautifully written and verbose, but BORING! I couldn't get into any of the characters and they jumped back and forth on focal character way too often. Lin was the best I suppose but she also annoyed me a lot. The plot felt convoluted. Honestly this was almost DNFed at one star. The sentence structure is good though so generously 2 star. I was stuck at the hospital reading this and honestly if I had any other option with me I would have dropped this. I barely finished, doused off several times (and no I wasn't the patient so it wasn't meds or pain). I didn't feel this was much of a fantasy book but there is a type of magic, just not one I really could get into. Slow paced.

How I Got Him To Marry Me: 50 True Stories
by
Cherise Kelley
Vailias Page Turner
, February 05, 2018
This was pretty bad. I felt this book to be more how to entrap the guy to get him to propose/marry then is was to honestly get the guy to even like the woman! A few stories seemed decent and focused on things on showing him how great you are but most push for answers, bribe, sabotage or otherwise get results. Honestly, I doubt Even a few of these marriages would last. Sad honestly. My second big gripe is how true any of these are. The author admits at the beginning to changing some parts around to make what she though would be better reading. But the cliched lines...now those she gave examples of and said she would leave alone. And those are the worst things to leave alone if you insist on changing. Now I get fixing a spelling error or maybe grammar. But unless you are retelling the stories from YOUR perspective you don't change them! So then the stories are no longer true.

Enjoying Where You Are On The Way To Whe
by
Joyce Meyer

Between 3.5-4 stars For the most part, I feel I got some good insight in this. From forgiving yourself and not letting in ruin the rest of your day (or longer), to just taking time to enjoy small things. Joyce works to give examples of how to make all aspects of our life a bit more joyful (even work and cleaning). Some parts are vague though. More of a "Just be happy" that gets a bit dull. I wish less time was spent re-hashing the same points and gave more ideas of how to enjoy things or to at least not be less of s "survive life mode." Still, a worthwhile read.

To start off, I will say that I liked this book more that I thought I would. I was originally looking for a book for a reading challenge (needed blue covers) and just happened to see this at the library and figured it didn't look too bad and that I would just read it since nothing else was working. I will admit, the concepts are not very original. The ideas that is is in between The Bachelor and Hunger Games (in the dystopia sense)is fairly accurate, with heavily leanings on The Bachelor. The love triangle setting adds a bit extra to character complexity. I will not say much on what the books is about. The summary already does that in itself on this book. The book is written from America's perspective and what I will say otherwise is what I thought. First, I must admit, I dislike the character names. Yes I know the last names refer to what the person does, but the first names are horrid in my opinion. Yet the main thing is the writing style and pace. I literally laid down last night thinking I would read a few chapters. Next thing I knew, the sun would be rising soon and the book sat finished in my hands. I don't get that with many books anymore. This book made me giggle at times, and twitch in anticipation at others. It left me desperately craving the sequel. Wondering who she picks, or who Maxon picks, what is up with the other girls, etc. So, while the concept is not original, the characters are interesting, and the story is written in a way that is easy to get wrapped up in it. I actually just put it back on hold at the library so I could skim through it once again before them next book comes out. I read it so fast I fear I might have missed things. I honestly had a hard time rating this. In the way in captured my attention once I started reading, and my desire to read it again I would normally say 5, but since it does lean SO heavily on the concept of The Bachelor. So, I give this a 4 1/2.

Testing
by
Joelle Charbonneau

I loved this book! An amazing dystopian novel that is very realistic and believable. One of the best heroines I have read about in recent years. and a world that, while devastated, is one I almost wish I could visit to see what it it like. Lucky for readers, Joelle Charbonneau does a wonderful job in her deliverance of this world to us. This book is a first person novel from the view of Cia. Cia is a young teen who is specially selected to join in The Testing. The Testing is about selecting future world leaders or specialists of various fields. Cia's father was previously chosen and warns Cia that things may not be as they seem. Cia is a smart young woman. One of the best and well-written characters is YA fiction I have read. Down to earth, smart, compassionate, high sense or morals, dignity and more. She is not all powerful, super-strong, etc. She is your everyday person who has faith in herself. She is helpful to others yet not naive enough to trust others. She is very observant. This simplistic seeming skills are what has her standing apart from the crowd. The imagery of this story leaves you feeling how real this world is. You can tell that this is still the US that the story takes place in. We get to see what Chicago is like in the story. We have war ravenged mutants, loss of civilization, loss of plant life, water and more and it is very well laid before us exactly to really live in Cia's reality. The world is fighting hard to correct itself. Signs of hope are everywhere yet government lords over everything with an iron grip. While Cia makes friends, and confronts other less-than-friends, Thomas is her main constant. There is an element of romance in this book but not over the top. Although it never quite feels very real either. The main story line of the test, and Cia's goals and hope are still the focus. The pace is very consistent. There is a LOT happening in this book, but it is not overwhelmingly done. The personality and style of writing is amazing! Conspiracy, survival, friendship and more collide in the spectacular novel! Great quote from the book that helps set the stage: “Things don't always work out the way we hope. You just have to pick yourself up and find a new direction to go in.”

Winnie the Witch

Cute book about a witch who lives in an all black home and has a black cat who she sometimes has a hard time seeing (since everything is black). A short journey as she works to fix the problem. Most cute and amusing! The art is playful and actually has a surprising amount of detail to it. You can tell a good deal of time was put into the pictures which is something I always appreciate in a good children's book. This is the first book about Winnie. We will continue looking to add the others to our family's book collection.

Lightning

This novel is a combination of science fiction (time travel) and suspense, and the result is a book I was not be able to put down. The story focused around Laura Shane. Starting from birth and to adulthood (around 30 I believe). The other main character is Stefan. A unknown “guardian” who keeps appearing throughout her life to save her. Both are well thought-out and well-written characters. Another character I liked in the story was Thelma (Laura’s childhood friend). Laura goes through early life and several situations (starting at her birth) come up that should have hurt or even ended her life. However, each time she is saved by the mysterious Stefan. Who he is or why he saves her is a mystery through the first half (or more) of the book. All I will say is the Koontz did a great job adding a bit of a sci-fi twist into the story. This is one of my favorite all-time books. I first read this in middle school (over 10 year ago) after reading another of Koontz's books (House of Thunder). Since then, I have read this book several times and recommended it to fellow readers often.

The Warble

This book turned out to be more fun than expected. When I got this book, I was thinking it would simply be a pre-teen/young teen book that my niece could enjoy. What I didn't expect is how much I enjoyed it! The book starts off in current time with Kristina leaving school when her teacher gives her a hat box. That night, she hears a strange noise and soon finds herself in another world, not her own! A world filled with fairies, gnomes, dwarves and a wicked queen! She is told that she must save the land from the false queen and break the curse that has dwelled over the land. Lucky for her she is not alone. She has her pet rat, Raymond with her. And in this new land he can now talk! So the journey begins. Along the way she meets up with Prince Werrien, Clover, the raven Roage (a character I easily came to love), and more. Yet she is not the only one to enter this strange world. Two of her classmates (and school bullies) and her nasty baby-sitter also find themselves in this new place. Yet Kristina does not realize they too are there so these three become easy targets for the queen. This leads to my favorite line in the book when the Queen and her son learn of the humans arrival. "They're popping up like a bad skin rash" I couldn't help but laugh at that. The son, Ramon, just seems so flabbergasted at the idea of humans. So the chessboard is set and the pieces move. Yet they refuse to follow the rules! So many characters switch sides, good to bad and bad to good. You never know who to trust. I loved this as a reader. It really keeps you guessing. The evil queen reminded me strongly of the Queen from 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.' Especially when her servant is trying to row her across the water, and a storm kicks up he is stuck rushing to keep water out of the boat while she just sits there. Really?! So then she became the Lazy, evil queen. Overall, very nicely done. Easy enough for an older child (say age 9-10) to read, but with enough plot and context for teenagers and even adults with an inner child yearning for those magical days once again.

Daughter of Isis

Kelsey Ketch

This was a fantastic read! When I choose to read this book, it sounded intriguing and I figured I would enjoy it. However, it turns out that this novel was better than I had anticipated! It starts of with teenager Natara Stone (Natti) moves to America with her father. They leave their home in London after the tragic murder of her grandmother. The come to the small town of Setemple only to learn in it has very strong Egyptian theme (including a pyramid). This sets the pair off as it reminds them of Natti's mother who died. Upon arriving at their new home and unpacking, Natti comes across a box her grandmother had given her and in the box was a mysterious letter her grandmother had left for her to find. This is when my interest really picked up. I quickly wanted to unravel the hints of the letter. The other character we meet is Seth. At first I could not stand him! He charms his way through school and sleeps his way through most of the female population there. Although I loved seeing how he keeps chasing after strong-willed Natti! While is character is sleazy at first once I started reading more from his perspective I actually felt sorry for him. He is a tricky one to peg down. His best friends, Q and Ky, I hate. Nothing nice to say about them. Natti, on the other hand, I LOVED. She is spirited, caring, witty and full of life! She is very easy to like and I enjoyed seeing her British backround show up now and then. Overall, Kelsey Ketch did a good good with blending in some Egyptian style and lore into this book. It is easy to follow and she explains things well. The book has a great pace to it. Brisk enough to keep things going but paced enough to draw the reader in. This book has some very mature themes in it. Lots of sexual references, drugs, human sacrifice, mind control, etc. Nothing too strong of over the top, but dark enough that I encourage this more for older teens and adults only. It starts off light but as the story delves deeper it also gets darker. So readers be warned! There is a romantic element here, but it is mixed with possession, fear, hate and confusion that it by no means is a main focus. It has just enough to have you wonder about the pair but nothing more. This was a nice change in a young adult novel that focuses on a male/female lead combo. This is a great read for fantasy or mythology fans! The book draws you in and keeps you wondering the outcome every step of the way. I hope to know more about the next book in the series soon. it is definitely one I will be keeping an eye out for!

Vampire Academy 02 Frostbite

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. This books picks up shortly after the first book in the series. Rose is still in training with Dimitri and feelings run strong between the two but cannot be acted upon, with both of them being Lissa's (a Moroi princess and Rose's best friend) future guardians. There are some attacks on the Moroi royal families. This sends fear of what should be done to stop the Strigoi. Some feel it is time for the Moroi to fight beside their guardians and learn offensive magic, whilst others believe its not their place to fight. While the adults argue, some of the students sneak away to deal with the threat themselves. The thought process of Rose is easy to be sympathetic with and believable. The characters are great and very individual to themselves. I continue to enjoy the vampire hierarchy in this book, combined with the differences of Strigoi, vdampir, and Moroi. **Mild Spoiler**: There is one character death that was sad to witness but Rose's reaction to it was very well written. I am excited to continue with this series. It has definitely exceeded expectations.
