Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?
by
Jack Martin

I have read every Jack Martin book and each one made me feel like I was witnessing history first-hand, like I was right there. Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? was not an exception. I got a glimpse of gangster life"Bonne and Clyde, Dillinger, J. Edgar Hoover, Early Long, Carl Weiss, Heinrich Himmler, Franz von Papen. If I had read books like his in high school, I would have gotten more out of history classes. The common thread throughout all his books is a blonde guy with small, round glasses…Gosh, I love that character. I cannot wait for more! For those not familiar with his other works, he has written: John Brown’s Body, Battle Cry of Freedom, Marching Through Georgia, The Battle Hymn of the Republic and Hail Columbia. All are fabulous! " CJ Loiacono

When the Devils Idle
by
Leta Serafim

Serafim does a great job with knitting together the past and present, and does not allow you to see who did what until the very end. Magnificent writing! More! " CJ Loiacono

Brace for Impact

I am a magnet for military and law enforcement thrillers. Well, Chris Williams does not disappoint in the least. From word one, he had me hooked! Now I have to find out what Jake Walker does next. Every gal needs a hero! Jake is mine. I highly recommend this read for both men and women alike. " CJ Loicaono

Sea of Greed: The True Story of the Investigation and Prosecution of Manuel Antonio Noriega
by
McCullough, J. Douglas and Pendleton, Les

, January 28, 2015
I lost I dear friend, Sonny Owens, a helicopter pilot, in the invasion of Panama. That is what made it personal. To read the true story about the events leading up to that brought all the memories back. It makes you think about the root causes of the US's military actions and the flesh and blood sacrificed for democracy and world freedom. What taints it is the greed on both sides--money, drugs, the lack of morals and values. My hat is off to Douglas McCullough for daring to bring this information forward and in such a readable way; like a movie unfolding. Oh, I could most definitely see this as a movie. Hell, it had real movie stars in it! Five stars all the way!

Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike
by
James C. Washburn

, December 02, 2014
Touching Spirit: Letters of Minominike by James Washburn is the best spiritual book I have read since Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch and The Shack by William Young. Absolutely inspiring and empowering. The old saying, "You can never go back" is so wrong. Sometimes you must reconnect with the past in order to complete the future. I highly recommend this for anyone"any culture, any religion, any walk of life. It brings you back to what is most important. Love.

The Devil Takes Half
by
Leta Serafim
jeanie.loiacono
, August 09, 2014
Leta Serafim has done a remarkable job! At an archeological dig on the idyllic Greek Island of Chios, a severed hand is found lying in a blood-filled trench. This docile place has seen nothing more than petty theft. The Chief of Detectives has his work cut out for him, but he has help from the local priest who has seen and memorized every American detective show. Fast-paced, it has you gasping for air and turning pages at the same time. You will go through a gamut of emotions. More! More!
