Dizz Tate: Books That Made Me Want to Write: Dizz Tate’s Bookshelf for Brutes (0 comment)
When I was writing my book, Brutes, there came a point where I wanted to be thinking about it even when I was so tired of it I couldn’t bear to look at it anymore. I was also terrified of leaving it alone, like the book would forget me if I stopped reminding it I was there...

Warrior Goddess Training Become the Woman You Are Meant to Be by Heatherash Amara
    Angela Kopshy, January 19, 2018
I wasn't sure that I'd connect with this book because of my particular belief system around spirituality. But HeatherAsh worked with the Ruiz family, with whom I strongly connect. I really enjoyed the book and found the process through which she works through the ten fundamental lessons to be powerful and concise. Her examples, exercises, and resources were all really helpful for me. As a woman whose spirit is strongly connected to nature and works in the therapy world, I was delighted with this book! My favorite quote: "Open beyond your knowing to the awareness that all things are one and interconnected. Slow down. Listen to the stars and soil; hear the silent teachings of the wind and the wisdom of fire. The microcosm of each of your cells is a direct link to the macrocosm of the entire Universe. Get still and let the Universe blossom within you."  - HeatherAsh Ama from Warrior Goddess Training

    Larose by Louise Erdrich
    Angela Kopshy, November 10, 2017
This book is full of so many fantastic characters and situations and scenarios braided into an elegant story stretched out over 12 CDs. I didn't want it to end! I learned so much, pondered so much and made note of so many things I need to look into more deeply. The character development was great as you flopped from hating a character to pitying them to celebrating their triumph in the end. The narration is fantastically elegant. I loved this book!

We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
    Angela Kopshy, October 14, 2017
This little book, a modified version of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 2012 TEDx talk, is a goldmine. She spells out fantastic examples of the treatment of women and men without screaming or crying. In other words, it felt like something a man or woman could read without getting defensive! We still walk a fine line when it comes to the word 'feminist' and she expands upon this when calling herself a Happy African Feminist Who Does Not Hate Men And Who Likes To Wear Lip Gloss And High Heels For Herself And Not For Men. And my favorite thought provoking point she makes: "Culture does not make people. People make culture. If it is true that the full humanity of women is not our culture, then we can and must make it our culture." This 48 page book is not only completely relevant as we near the end of 2017, but critical for both women and men all around the world.

Killing England The Brutal Struggle for American Independence by Bill OReilly, Martin Dugard
    Angela Kopshy, October 03, 2017
I had a long drive ahead of me and was inspired by the reputation of those associated with this book/recording. I wasn't the best history student in high school and the narration of Killing England was incredibly eye opening. Not only were the facts illustrated, but the characters behind the making of our country were displayed as well. I learned more of mothers and wives and the sacrifices of women and children as well as the men. One of my favorite elements: All the footnotes that they took the time to read helped tie everything together with modern times and current events. The narrator read well and Killing England never lulled. I didn't want it to end and listened to many of the discs a second time. Totally worth the investment.

    Bossypants by Tina Fey
    Angela Kopshy, December 13, 2015
I was on my way out of town for a week...debating whether or not I should return my library books on time or take them with me. I returned the books, did not make it to the airport in time to buy a new book and spent the entire first leg of my flight flipping through the pages of airline ads. I bought this book for the second half of my journey and couldn't put it down. Tina Fey is so real and shares her experiences and perspectives without apologies. Not only was this book hilarious, but it also gave me an entirely new perspective on television, raising children when you really love your career, and how you should or should not respond to scars on the faces of others. This book is a great read for both men & women - with the possible exception of people who pee in cups and put them on the shelf because it takes too long to walk down the hall to the restroom. - See more at:

Piano Adventures Level 1 Lesson Book by Nancy Faber, Randall Faber
    Angela Kopshy, January 13, 2015
These are my favorite piano books to use in my studio. The order of instruction is logical and the rate at which concepts are introduced is perfect. On top of that, the accompaniment is really well written and creates a rich duet when students and instructors play together. I don't always use the Popular book in this series, but definitely the Performance, Lesson, Technique, and Theory books!

Songs Of The Gorilla Nation My Journey by Dawn Prince Hughes
    Angela Kopshy, November 08, 2014
Dawn Prince Hughes is an extraordinary and inspiring writer. This book provides wisdom and insight through beautiful writing. It was hard for me to even get past the Introduction because so many sentences took my breath away. I had to read them again and again. I'm recommending this book to all the families with whom I work. If you have an autism connection in your life, you should definitely read this book. If you don't have an autism connection in your life, this book may open a new perspective to you.

Four Agreements A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz
    Angela Kopshy, July 21, 2014
I truly endeavor to read this book once a year. Parts of this book were instantly illuminating and brought aha! moments upon me. There were other points that took longer to sink in. Every time I read this book, it made a little more sense and felt more ingrained in my heart and soul. But truly, from the first read, there were nuggets of wisdom that changed my life for the better.

Don't Bet on the Prince: Contemporary Feminist Fairy Tales in North America and England by Jack Zipes
    Angela Kopshy, July 21, 2014
I couldn't put this book down. It's a collection of authors and there are so many different flavors and perspectives. Definitely a fun and thought-provoking read. I was particularly in love with Chapter 5 - a four line spin on Cinderella. Great book for not only the strong, brilliant women out there, but for men, boys, girls and anything in between.

I Know Im in There Somewhere A Womans Guide to Finding Her Inner Voice & Living a Life of Authenticity by Helene G Brenner
    Angela Kopshy, July 21, 2014
I love this book and recommend it to all women. The case studies, real life examples to which I could relate, the innercizes - they were all incredibly helpful. I took my time reading this and dogeared so many pages. I believe this is a book you could go back to every year just to check in and make sure you're following every song that your heart sings.

Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana - Medical, Recreational and Scientific by Martin A. Lee
    Angela Kopshy, November 29, 2013
This book is riveting. There were so many things I didn't know about the history of marijuana and hash. Lee excels at crafting history through a storytelling perspective. His style is easy to read and puts a smile on your face. I really enjoyed this book and really appreciate the depth of Lee's research.

Ido in Autismland: Climbing Out of Autism's Silent Prison by Ido Kedar
    Angela Kopshy, November 29, 2013
As a music therapist who specializes in autism, I was particularly grateful for the combination of perspectives in this book. Ido's mother elaborates upon the many years of therapies; the heartbreak, frustration and misunderstandings that aren't fully elucidated until the day she discovers that her son, Ido, can write. Then we get to watch Ido break through his years of silence and share his perspective, his brilliance, his frustration and his hope through a series of essays. This book is a must read for anyone even remotely connected to autism!

Reason I Jump The Inner Voice of a Thirteen Year Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida, Ka Yoshida, David Mitchell
    Angela Kopshy, November 01, 2013
I work with autism. Some of the children with whom I work are really struggling to communicate in a way we can understand and this book provided a lot of insight into what they might be thinking, feeling, or experiencing. I really liked the way the book was organized and quickly dog-eared questions that I'd come back to again later. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is touched by autism. The insight is invaluable. Well done, Naoki!
