Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Notebook
by

A sweet, easy read for a day when escapism is needed. Nicholas Sparks is my go to when my life gets to busy, and stressful-when I need a book that I can read quickly, and without thought or worry. I love that they are all very sweet, and gentle on the soul. The Notebook is no exception, it is just plain sweet, about love at it's best. Not a thinker LOL -but it is what it is and it sure takes the time away when that is what one is looking for in a read.

Complete Allergy Free Comfort Foods Cookbook Every Recipe Is Free Of Gluten Dairy Soy Nuts & Eggs

My youngest is top 10 plus two free, in other words I have a heck of a time cooking/baking. This book has helped so much with making "real" food. What I love most about it is that it is not health food -it is just normal, real food. My family craved what it had not had in years, and this book delivered! My daughter tried both onion rings and fried chicken because of this book -foods I thought she would never eat in her life! Not only that the recipes were easy enough that I was able to make them. If making the cookies I strongly recommend leaving the batter sit for a bit in the fridge (that is not in the book, but I find they bake in a much more solid form if that is done) otherwise this book has been so amazing for my daughter.

This is a very sweet book, pretty simple crochet, for a person new to crochet. My girls love that they can pick a character and I can whip it up in a weekend. The book has every on that my girls knew.

Gluten Free Slow Cooking

I use this cookbook at least once a week all winter and fall. I have a child with severe allergies, and this book thankfully has many recipes that are not just GF but also free of dairy and all the other others are either absent or easily left out of the recipes. Most of the recipes I have made have been hits with the family and though some take prep in the morning they are well worth what you have at the end of the day!

We have a child who is allergic to 10 foods, and finding cook books that not only work but the food actually tastes like real food is a very rare thing indeed. Allergy Free and Easy is one of these rare books for me. I use it at least three nights a week, and every recipe I use turns out perfectly. Everyone who loves a person with complex dietary needs should find this book, and use it well! As my nine year old would say two thumbs and two big toes up!

Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven
by

As a fellow world traveller (but a Canadian not a American) I found this a very interesting read, my four years abroad were only a few years after Susan's. I found her exploits and behavior extremely frustrating and I found myself talking out loud to the book on more than one occasion! I spent a period of time in a fairly dangerous country as well, not China, but found some of her tales very enduring, and though I certainly would not have had her arrogance about some of her situations I did feel that "been there done that" feeling a few times. An interesting read.

Voyager Outlander 03
by
Diana Gabaldon

I am re-reading Voyager for perhaps the fourth time, and loving it just as much as the first. I had to read Outlander for my book club and then could not stop there. Love Diana Gabaldon, escapism at it's best. I can pick up one of these massive books and be engrossed in it for days -perfection for a book lover like myself. It has history, love, mayhem, all the things I love in a good novel, and some serious length so you do not get into it and then it is over!

Lady of the Rivers
by
Philippa Gregory
contest.tracy
, November 06, 2014
I loved The Lady of the Rivers, as with almost all of Philippa Gregory's books this is a historical fiction based in England. I could not put this book down until I was done. Her words make me feel as though I am there, with this family, feeling their joy, and sadness. A great read if this is your area of interest.

Kingmakers Daughter

Like all of Philippa Gregory's book this one is in my humble opinion wonderful. I could not put it down until I was done, then wanted to pick it right back up again. It puts me right back in time, with the intrigue, food, clothing, and people. Worth the read if you are a English history fiction fan.

Love this book, love this series. I have read this book at least five times, and most of the series three times I believe, working on it for the fourth time right now. Love it!
