Fairy Animals of Misty Wood 05 Poppy the Pony
by

, December 31, 2018
The series, Fairy Animals of Misty Wood, is a huge success with readers in the 2nd-3rd grade classroom! These animals are caring, friendly, and set on overcoming their fears. Poppy the Pony might be shy, but she is braver than she knows. When a thunderstorm brings fear to her friends on a picnic, Poppy comes up with an idea. Being brave in the midst of danger means you rely on a talent from within! There are so many delightful bonuses within this series: adorable and entertaining illustrations, the Misty Wood map to help readers know where the animals are, as well as a few interactive writing/drawing prompts. Perfect for classrooms, excellent for parents and gift giving, and wonderful for grandparent story time! Snuggle up and enjoy a wonderfully, fanciful moment or two, MrsK

Murphy's lies were getting her in deep, ever since she came to Kodiak Island she just couldn't keep out of these situations. What began as a half truth has quickly ensnared her in an investigation as a forensic artist. After a year on Kodiak, Murphy found that the rain provided a perfect atmosphere. Hiding from the past was becoming comfortable. Painting a few pictures, crafting sea glass jewelry helped her get by. Mr. Brinkley had claimed her small accommodations as his home, once in he became her sounding board and confidant. He wasn't just a stray, he was all she had that kept her past and present somewhat balanced. Why had her sister come to Kodiak? Why is the serial killer on the loose, could he be the reason so many are dying? How could he have followed her? Detective Elin Olsson has strong instincts. She knows that Murphy has what it takes to help document the newest crime scenes. She knows she can trust Murphy to get the evidence that will lead to a conviction. What began as a deathbed confession, has now become a double homicide. What did that old hunter discover on the Ruuwaq Island ten years ago? Bertie Fischer is from the state's crime lab. On Ruuwaq Island, Bertie takes a death-defying fall that sends her to the Anchorage hospital. But, before she goes, she enlists Murphy's help against Zinkerton. Bertie knows who Murphy is and why she has arrived on Kodiak. Joshua Ward is a patrol officer, who takes over helping Murphy gather evidence while Bertie is hospitalized. For Joshua, Murphy seems like a real life Jessica Fletcher. Everyone around her is dying. Ryan Wallace is a journalist writing a history piece about the Salmon Run Lodge. That is until he has to rescue Murphy from the owner. Are you ready for one wild and crazy ride of deception? MrsK

Delilah has just buried her son, Carver. A month has gone by, yet her heart still feels broken. Leaving Alabama for Pennsylvania could be a fresh start, at least that's what she has been told. Yet, she just didn't trust that life would be different up north even though it was the 50's. Upon arrival, Delilah's heart was pounding in fear as Carver's twin, George, ended up missing. It was in the woods that she found him, safe in the arms of Emma. Emma lives in Sinking Creek, PA. With burdens so secret, Emma's day dreaming brings a solace to her days. "The blades of grass twist and turn...," Emma knew she had to be quick about writing her words down, quick before they "flew away." She had found her love for words in the eighth grade and even though she never returned to school, she couldn't stop from writing the lines that bubbled forth. Something new was unfolding that day she had found the little boy, something spoke deep with in when that child's mother found them. Sparrow is Delilah's daughter, she has been gifted with a wisdom beyond her years. As soon as George goes missing, Emma follows her mama into the woods of Sinking Creek. That's when she first sees Emma. After her mama takes George home, she notices the basket that the was forgotten. Hurrying, she follows the path that leads to Emma's property. As the days follow, Sparrow finds peace within those woods. A peace that eludes her when she is at home. Her guilt about Carver is a burden that has no healing. Yet, when she is befriended by Emma's son, she slowly begins to recognize the stirring within... hope was being rekindled Deeply moving story about grief, dysfunction, and fanning the flame of hope. Ellie is a interior designer, a contractor, strong and witty. Her blog, Hammer Girl, keeps her in business and she is rather "set" in her ways. After all, flipping homes isn't for anyone weak by nature or without grit. That is until, her sister, Mac, goes missing. Now everything in her every day life becomes out of focus. What begins as slashed tires quickly escalates into murder and a race for life. Grayson is an intelligence officer, yet he has just arrived in Lavendar Tides, Washington. His vacation was called short once the two tons of cocaine ended up missing, how could officials lose an entire seized shipment? If that wasn't enough stress, now his parents have acknowledged that a strangers request might just be the truth. His hunches about Mackenzie Blackmore's connection in the heist were strong, and for the most part, his hunches were rarely wrong. Who was leading whom astray? Grayson will stay close to Ellie, for now. That is until his hunches provides his next lead. Ellie is getting more and more frustrated with Grayson's attitude of her sister, maybe she should investigate on her own. Neither one is completely truthful, neither one is trusting, yet both will need to rely on each other! Death is just a few steps behind them, MrsK

Room on the Porch Swing

"Allen!" It was at 2:12am when Allen heard his wife's voice. Nothing seemed impossible once the doctors had Savilla's fever down and ready to go home. Until the moment when he noticed all of the "flurry" outside of her hospital room. When grief strikes, not much matters. Allen will attempt his best every day for his little Mollie Faith, yet sometimes reality can come knocking at all hours of the day or night. If it wasn't for Savilla's best friend, Allen would not be slowly moving forward... nor would he be getting any sleep. Laura was Savilla's best friend. Still in a process of grieving her mother's death, Laura must do something to help Allen and Mollie Faith. With a sequence of events, Laura realizes that Allen can not take care of a little one and continue his buggy/carriage business. As is custom, Laura asks her family about her plan to stay overnight at Allen's whenever Mollie Faith is unsettled. On faith, Laura proceeds forward with her plans. Laura is unprepared for Rudy's thoughtless accusations. Even though they have been "somewhat" courting for the last four years, something has changed. Does she need to take a step back and look to see how her decisions are impacting Rudy and their future? Children are such a blessing. How should Laura guard her heart when it comes to Mollie Faith? Even though it has only been a few weeks time, Mollie Faith is beginning to toddle to her, sleeping through the night, and calling her "Lala." Yet, on the weekends when Laura is at her own home, Mollie Faith is crying out for her during the night. Laura knows she must begin to back away from Allen and Mollie Faith, yet how to do so when your heart is aching for them will take much strength and faith. This realistic relationship is beautifully crafted. In so many ways, as a reader, you will want Laura to move forward and back away from Allen's needs. Allen is healing, yet Laura could get him stuck in a reliance on her. Mollie Faith is just as precious as any little one. There is no way not to fall under her sweetness. Family and friends are honest and supportive during a time of struggle. The truth involving a search for what our Lord would want is very poignant. This is a story crafted around the separation of our will for His Will. Choices that we all make with every new season... MrsK

Shauna never tires of flying her chopper over the Pacific NW, nor of the charm of her town Lavender Tides. She had to do this for her son Alex, she had no one else to turn her since Jack had died. Her own father was too unreliable. She had to ask Zach for help, even though she would never forgive him for Jack's death. Alex was more important and right now he needed a father role model. She knew Zach was it. Zach built the Hurricane Roost Airport. As a "dare-devil junkie," Zach knows that Shauna is hurting. But, so was he. After all Jack had been his best friend. When Shauna requests that Zach go on a father-son hike with Alex, Jack had no reservations in saying yes. Could this be a chance to make things right for Alex and Shauna? What begins as answer to a call from Clarence, soon explodes into a deceptive web of murder. Who would want to kill Clarence or Lucy? Is their daughter's death also involved? So many questions! When a friend asks you to do something for them, you usually would. If they ask you to keep something safe or deliver it, well that wouldn't be a problem. Unless what is hidden inside the box is exactly what is desired by the killer. From the beginning, this novel became a source of intrigue and frustration. As each piece of the mystery surfaced, it began to unravel. As a reader, I felt that I was looking at a tapestry in which every thread is intricately woven to the plot. As you followed one thread, another secret was discovered. Shauna, Zach, and Alex will not be safe until all secrets are revealed. Not even a super hero could keep them from the destruction that is exploding around them! Can murder be delightfully intriguing? Not only did Lavender Tides take your breath away with beautifully detailed settings, the characters are crafted with a mixture of real life turmoil. As a reader, you will discover that this is a mystery that could be a "true to life reality." MrsK

Space Between Words

"Paris in November," should have been a season in which there is a glimmer of hope, new discoveries, and some days to travel. For Jessica, those days would be a painful path of recovery. With her friends, Patrick and Vonda, Denver would be a past life and France would not be the adventure she had envisioned. Patrick has a passion for life, for "picking," and for traveling the French countryside. His "Grab a shovel and believe in gold," proved to be always infectious causing Jessica to swap out her plans and embark on quests in promising places. Vonda may be younger, bolder, and unbridled in her determination to live life to the fullest. The trip to France meant freedom to grab all of the opportunities that any young heart could desire. Her request to change their evening plans and "live a little," would bring about a change that wasn't on their itinerary. Once Jessica realizes that the horror of the shooting was real, instead of returning home to Denver, she follows Patrick's lead into the countryside as a "healing" pathway. Vonda returns home and Jessica relinquishes her desire to flee France. With Patrick's insistence, Jessica follows her instincts to continue their treasure hunting plans. In a beautiful village in southern France, Jessica becomes charmed by the owners of the cottage in which Patrick had their B&B reservation. Grant, Mona, and Connor become the balm for the healing that Jessica will require. Days after the shooting, on a treasure hunt in a "ramshackle" barn. Patrick leads Jessica to the discovery of an old map, a bible, and a dark walnut sewing box. Hidden within the box is a small notebook. It will be this discovery that creates a distraction from the pain of the shooting. Given a new quest, coupled with the support from Grant and Mona, as well as the truth of Connor's observation, Adeline's story will finally be revealed. What began as an endearing friendship and love story, erupts in a mysterious quest to help Adeline's story to reach her descendants. Life can take many twists and turns. What becomes an opportunity to bring closure to someone else will have a mutual blessing of healing for those willing to move beyond tragedy. Engagement in the life of these characters doesn't seem adequate in expressing the profound crafting of this story. Enmeshment is not an eloquent "enough" term for the depth in which you will experience Jessica's healing. What could be discovered is a story entrusted for your sharing! Hope grows and healing begins once you open the covers of this story, MrsK

Most readers and movie goers are aware of the good vs. evil in any Sci-Fi conflict. Yet, when an author weaves together our current realities with a futuristic outcome, your skin begins to crawl. You begin wondering "what-ifs." Sofi Snow will not be denied. Her mental strengths and skills will be tested before the end of this saga. Miguel will need to rely on his heart-moves and ability to overcome physical weakness. All of earth's survivors will need to rebel or... Warning, do not try this book until you have the freedom to read well into the early light! This story line is understandable as a stand alone read due to the seamless weaving of both stories. The quest pushes the reader to "go back" and reread as a way of dealing with the plot twists. The climax will have all readers engaged with powerful emotional outbursts! This book is a perfect read for every educator and librarian. Author's discussing their favorite reads. Author's supporting reading environments at home. Author's recalling their cherished moments with book titles that all of us have experienced or will experience right away. This is a book to pick up when you are just browsing to pass the time in line, in a office waiting room, on a night when you just can't sleep. It is a book to own, because you will not have enough yellow stickies for all of the great titles, yes, you will need to write in the margins and star those titles that you want to experience for the first time or be so touched by their recall you want to revisit an old friend. With all the books on your "keep" shelves... You should invest in this delightful find! MrsK

Your heart breaks for Officer Luke Nelson as he struggles with the hopelessness of a trial. His family is trying to maintain an appearance of normalcy, yet how can an officer of the law move forward when there are so many voices in opposition to his quick response on that near fatal night. His wife Jane is standing in faith that Matthew 10:26 will bring forth the truth and clear her husband's name. Is there any doubt that a mother's heart can pray a child through the darkest moments of life? Well for Mrs. Armistead it will be a grandmother's heart who will be praying her grandchild, Deshaun, through. As a mighty prayer warrior, this seasoned warrior will give witness to the truth of forgiveness. Aunt Josie is in the hospital and Adisa will be answering the call to be at her bedside even though she is in the middle of negotiating a legal case for her law firm. What Adisa was unaware of was that her law firm would be changing and she would be representing Officer Luke Nelson. For Adisa, this change will usher in her heritage. She will face the truth of about prejudices, the truth about her Christian roots, and the truth that God's hand at work is mightier than any deception. Campbellton is a town that becomes torn between the races. It will need prayer intercessors who have strong roots in faith to keep from becoming one of those towns consumed with hatred. Those cloaked in faith will need to "suit" up for the battle that is brewing. Will false-hooded deceivers bring an innocent man to "justice?" Or, will the town have the scales removed from their eyes by the hand of God? With a scenario we witness all over our nation, these characters are so well defined they become real life prayer warriors that you would want on your side! MrsK

A story within a story is always intriguing. As the story begins, Gwen is reminded of that fatal day in which the front door had been left opened. As an investigator, Gwen requests a missing child investigation in Idaho. Many aspects of this case will begin unlocking the truth about that day so long ago in 1994. The challenge for Gwen will be locating the missing girl in time. What will make Gwen's blood run cold will be those memories that overshadow her investigation. With the help of her best friend Beth, Gwen will face humility, disgrace, doubt, and her worst fears. For Gwen, every ounce of courage will need to be called up. Uncovering her past truths will cause a tilting of her reality, yet within her past will be the path that could lead to a little girl's freedom. An unnerving story with deep roots. The author has masterfully created a page turner that keeps you guessing with every turn, plot twist, and discovery. Red herrings are not blatant foreshadowed, you must discover with Gwen each step that must be taken. Enjoy this law enforcement mystery, it is a tangled web! MrsK

The Whizbang Machine

When Elizabeth was fifteen, she was waiting for her grandfather while typing her English paper. She is a writer, a writer who loves the sound of the keys and the "hum" of her light blue electric typewriter (I can relate to her satisfaction!). It had been eight years since her father had died, since her grandfather had sold Yale's Shelves (a book store her family had owned for fifty years), and since she had seen him (only his travel postcards kept her informed). She had no idea that in two days she would be traveling with her grandfather on a quest to Casablanca, Morocco. What begins as a small "tingly" sensation as she reached for a box in her grandfather's storage soon becomes an "explosion of thunder" (it helped that there was a storm outside). Lying inside of a tan case was a vintage typewriter. Of course this wasn't just any typewriter, nope, it had been securely locked... and it was seated in "red plush velvet," which to any writer means a typewriter of distinction. As an educator, I couldn't ask for a better "on the edge" story line. Sharing certain portions of the story caused hands to fly up for ownership. As a reader, I experienced trepidation every time Elizabeth had to touch the keys. I was exhausted and angry with her grandfather for placing leading her into danger. I was pulling for her to get beyond this quest and just go home. I didn't want to read another word, and yet... I was compelled to enter into the chaos once more. Enjoy this treasure of a story, MrsK

When you need the break... between shopping, decorating, cooking, and all things on your list... this collection is a perfect retreat for your Holiday! It is our Booked to Dine January choice! Each tale brings a different type of "seasoned" joy. In Winter Kisses, you will enjoy how a blustery winter night can bring changes into the hearts of unsuspecting strangers. There is such a sweet reminiscent holiday spirit in the Christmas Cat. I enjoyed the chattering of the young visitors. The "take over" attitude of the cat is quite charming. Yet, the memories that Emma shares with her visitors reminded me of all those women who have touched my life. It truly felt as if I, once more, had arrived home for the holidays. Snow Angels, is an inspiring tale about walking in faith. Some times letting go, means allowing your hope to become their freedom to grow. While Molly entrusts David into God's hands, she discovers that she can help bring joy into the lives of others, even if that means being creative and making it snow for two very special children. Home for Christmas, is a high-spirited, rollicking series of events. What is endearing about this tale is penned with in the weaving of the romance. Neither Ellie or Ezra want to fall in love, yet, falling in love is not always something we plan. A little nudge here, a push there, and a giant leap can be the ingredients for a love that becomes foundational. Perfect retreat for Holiday cheer... MrsK

Murder on the Moor
by
Deering, Julianna

, July 19, 2017
At Farthering Place, Drew and Madeline are relaxing before the library fireplace "nestled in" while reading Jane Eyre. There was no indication that there had been any murder, no conversations about old friends. Just a relaxing night in, until Drew receives a phone request to come investigate the murder of a Vicar in Bunting's Nest. It has been years since Drew had spoken with "Beaky" Bloodsworth, it would be "rather interesting" to visit his family's lodge and investigate the Vicar's death. Given another murder, the discovery of a mysterious hideout on the moor, and the attempted sabotage to Sabrina's car, Drew and Madeline are quickly discovering that there are many suspects and only one logical explanation as to the connection between Sabrina, these unfortunate events, as well as the identity of the possible villain. The moors... what images do you have of Yorkshire moors? Do you sense the chilling mists? Is there a feeling of impending doom? Do the winds push you stumbling into areas that seem haunted? If you are familiar with mysterious happenings on the "moors," then this is a must read! MrsK

The Longing in Me: How Everything You Crave Leads to the Heart of God
by
Sheila Walsh
kim_shealy
, July 14, 2016
With her newest book, Sheila is inviting us to walk with her and King David towards discovering the longing within our souls. "The human heart longs for closure and understanding." It's my "forever beginning," my point at which life tips and I begin looking for a life-preserver. Often times my searching takes me to others that might not be available. Ultimately, I reach for God's words... then I begin a renewal. Sheila explains the "slow and endless drip, drip, dripping" as a soul is damaged. When we replay the "agonizing, shame-filled tapes" over and over and over in our heads we become powerless against the warfare that begins a battle against our soul. We long to win the battle and to take refuge under the care of a champion or victor. If you are a gardener, you know all about those weeds that will choke the life out of a plant. En-crouching the good soil until the plant itself is over-ran with the weed's webbing. Within our minds, conversations and actions can thrive if we give attention to those deceiving "weeds." Eventually that "longing in me" begins prompting me to make everything right. What did King David do? How can the word of God direct our path? "How do you live when things can't be quickly fixed?" Accept Sheila's invite, joining many women of faith and King David along this path of victory. Healing brings sweet freedom, MrsK mrskbookstogo

During the two week preparation, Dooley and Lace will have so many decisions. Each conversation is an invitation into their plans for their new life. Whether you are sitting with them on the wicker glider "talking against the night," or you are engaged in every one's insight about all things happening before the wedding begins. On top of the list is the "Weather Anxiety", closely followed by the "Potluck Paranoia," and then there is "The Dress" decision. Father Timothy is antsy over all the items on his to do list. Even winkles bring a state of angst, especially when the vitamin D oil does nothing to stop the "trenching." He always bakes a ham for weddings therefore two should do it. Will it matter that fresh bread will be coming out of the oven, or that three hundred cheese wafers will be baking? What about the cakes, ice, guestbook, vestments, and the Local coverage? Here's to hoping his new planner will keep all things in order. With a son, a new eight-month-old golden retriever, Choo-Choo a crazy mean bull, the after-math of a low-pressure system, Henry's arrival, cans tied to the bumper of the truck, casseroles-fried chicken-cornbread-corn on the cob-Miss Louella's biscuits-baked beans-home made pickles-syrupy peaches-and... Who is Mary Handley? Well she is as clever as Sherlock. She is quite adorable. She is inquisitive and wise in discernment's concerning character. Which by the way is why she is a Consulting Detective for the Brooklyn Police Department. As a salesclerk for Lazlo's Books, she is ready to begin her investigative services in her new office. Even though it is 1890, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle has failed to mention the murder of Gabrielle Evans. The Huttington's are powerful, rich, and willing to do anything to keep their status. So would murder be out of the question? Has Archer Huttington's quest for the truth about his father's death (John Worsham) set off more cover-ups? Will an attack on Mr. Lazlo quiet Mary? Will Superintendent Campbell help Mary exhume John's body? For Mary, too many strands were getting tangled, including the new attention of one George Vanderbilt! Events unfold quickly once an actress is stabbed. Now Mary's list of unanswered questions has grown out of control, as well the list of suspects. Nothing is as it appears, the plot continues to plummet into a depth of corruption that is mind-boggling. The one consistent thread will be found in Mary's character. As a team, George and Mary will get to the truth and untangle all of the threads. What will be revealed is the moment in which the reader realizes how entertained they have been with a read such as this! Enjoy a mystery in which all are players... Including the reader, MrsK

With the sweetest illustrations by Frank Endersby, this is a delightful "huggle-snuggle" moment of love. There is no comparison for those quiet moments of love when you snuggle-up with a book for story time. With a gracious touch of God's love, you can snuggle, read and discuss, and instill the love as a prayer warrior your little one's heart. What a beautiful gift that will last an eternity within their spirit. As Mama Bear tucks little bear in bed, she plants her loving seeds of the blessing her little one has given her. With each memory of love, she shares her prayer of gratitude to our Lord for the most precious gift of her little one. Whether it is a moment before the little one was born. Their first moment in your arms or as they take their first wobbly steps. Even those first parenting moments of a "boo-boo" or their first "no." What is joyfully passed on... is the love and joy experienced as you read this book together. Be prepared for this book to be shared for years to come, Enduring moments of love and joy! Perfect for every little heart... every night! MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Completely entertained by this new form of reading, I anxiously awaited this second adult coloring book to be delivered to my home. "The red-haired fairy who lived inside the cuckoo clock was feeling restless..." She will soon discover what the world beyond her world of clockworks "really" looks like. She discovers marvelous treasures, beautiful and mysterious nooks and crannies, and fanciful journeys beyond her intricately designed clock mechanisms. Beautifully designed. Artistically playful. This color book holds the promise of enjoyment, tranquility, and discovery. A great gift for yourself and all who love imaginative journeys. Ok, I have to admit that I was not a fan of this new type of genre. I did not look beyond the covers of most of these "adult" coloring books. As an educator and librarian, I knew these books of art would not be practical for our shelves. Students would never be able to check these out and color in them. However, what I found was.... "There once was a little girl who had boundless imagination, and exploring was one of her favorite things to do." An endearing story that captivated my imagination. When the little girl's father brings home an antique cuckoo clock, the little girl just has to take a closer look... to her surprise she discovers a "strange red-haired little fairy." And so her journey begins. With detailed sketches, you journey with the little girl in and out of the cuckoo clock. Into many "alluring" settings. Into many illusions as enticing as any fantastical dream. Beautifully designed. Artistically playful. This color book holds the promise of enjoyment, tranquility, and discovery. Take a moment to read, to color, to relax in a dreamy moment in time, MrsK

Kate's story begins with a sweet interchange with Grandy. They share many secrets that allows Kate to bloom as a young trouble-shooter. On this day of "surprise gifts," Kate overhears her Grandy as he is arguing with his best friend. Her Grandy never gets angry, why is he threatening to kill Mr. Gorman? Charlie is a young man who has experienced violence, abuse, abandonment, betrayal, hypocrisy, and "every type of fight for respect, resources, or relief". He doesn't have much other than a harmonica. On the day of the robbery, many will be changed forever. The moment death enters the scene, many will be confronted with choices in which their true strengths or weaknesses will determine their actions. Kate will extend a hiding place to Charlie. Charlie will need some time to recover. Grandy will need to share his secret in order to save his family. Great grandma Pearl will need to confront her family about their deceptions, denials, and the truth behind the creation of Harrison Lodge. Seamlessly woven, six lives unfold. Six futures will be determined. Each life has a past that will "collide" at the Lodge. So vivid are the decisions. So carefully crafted are the scenes. So defined are the characters. What begins as a young girls story will end with a reader's experience that is flawlessly portrayed and played out as if it was viewed on the big screen. Intriguing suspense in which every turn of the page causes you to want to hope, MrsK

Reading in the Wild The Book Whisperers Keys to Cultivating Lifelong Reading Habits
by
Donalyn Miller, Susan Kelley

, October 18, 2015
Within these pages, you will find reading ideas, techniques, and tools that will provide the "perfect" setting for our students to be set free "to read." As mature readers we read for various reasons. We are always on the "watch" for new discoveries. We search garage sales, book stores, library shelves, online book reviews and lists. If we are truthful... we probably have stacks of books awaiting our attention. We know how to use the power of a book to teach or explain the "how-to" for any situation we encounter whether it be cooking, automotive repairs, quilting, home make-overs, or searching for an address. Rarely are we asked to take a quiz about what we just read. Outside of a classroom, when was the last time you had to fill in a packet about the book you enjoyed? Was it an art project that lead you to a good read or was it a discussion about a character, a story line, the next book in a series? "What are the habits of a lifelong reader?" If you agree that lifelong readers are those who: dedicate time to reading; self-select reading materials; share books and insights with other readers; have reading plans beyond their current book; and show preferences for genres-authors-topics... then... as an educator you are lead into taking a "critical look" at your own teaching practices (lesson designs, classroom management strategies, formative assessments, etc.). "What instructional components exist in your classroom that will support students as they develop lifelong reading habits?" So many insights... Organized, inspiring, and over-flowing with tested-examples... Take the time to invest in this journey... Every student will benefit... MrsK mrskbookstogo

Freedom's Price
by
Michaela Maccoll

"Eliza Hates Lanndry With a long stick, Eliza traced each letter carefully into the muddy bank of the mighty Mississippi River... Eliza wants more." What was she thinking? Being educated was not allowed. Staying free wasn't an option, even if you had papers. Anyone, anywhere, could turn you over to a slaver. For Eliza "freedom" meant being protected by her parents, a sponsor, a lawyer, and living at a jail while her family waited for their day in court. She had to stay close to her family and not draw attention to herself. Yet, being eleven meant that she had dreams "of boarding a steamboat and traveling far away." She longed for the day that she could "...make a life for herself that didn't involve laundry." Sent to locate some fat drippings for soap, Eliza meets Wilson. Wilson has been free since the day he was born. He was raised on the river and he joined up on a boat because the cook promised that he could learn everything he needed to know, including how to be a pastry chef. Wilson believed that "dirty work" was a "fair trade for a dream." Together they will discover each other's strengths as their journey towards their "dreams" leads them beyond the safety of being born free. Miss Charlotte is a sponsor who can provide the courts with proof that Eliza's family are not slaves, she hires out work for them and will do what she can as they wait for the courts decision. When she offers Eliza a job looking after Miss Sofia, Eliza believes she can look after herself. She would be away from her ma's protection. She would be free from doing laundry. She would be staying in Miss Charlotte's big house and not the jail. Of course Miss Charlotte's son would have already gone to California, so she didn't need to worry about his threats. On the day that the crowd gathered at the jail, Eliza is faced with the reality of what can happen to any one's freedom. As her friend is put in the jail, Eliza discovers that Lucy is now a fugitive who ran from the slave block. She witnesses the fear of the Cholera sickness. And she faces the torment of the courts shutting down until the sickness is gone. For Eliza freedom is "snatched" away. "Ma might hate her for it, but Eliza wasn't going to make the same choice as Ma and Pa. She wouldn't just sit and wait for the courts." Eliza is determined to make her own choices. What she isn't prepared for is a town filled with death. Desperate actions of those wanting money. Decisions that will lead her beyond safety and onto a ship destined for a slave auction far from home. Eliza will need to face her inner self, her inner strength. What can't Eliza do? "We can't go ashore. We can't cross. We can't stay... Eliza spotted a familiar ship... It was like a prayer... ...the Freedom School!" Eliza is a character that is full of freedom. Her dreams for a better life is her driving force. She is bright, quick thinking, and gifted with a talent overflowing with compassion. Her story is a beautiful introduction into the history of slavery. Her voice resonates the truth about freedom. Her choices provides the pacing for the story line and the reality of facing evil intentions head on with prayer. The friendship with Wilson provides the hope along the path that Eliza chose. And the quietly stated "promise" is the thread that is seamlessly woven throughout Eliza's story as it is woven throughout our nation's history and the "price" of freedom. A beautiful story of promise for independent readers, MrsK

The Girl from the Train

, October 11, 2015
Gretl's journey begins in Southern Poland in 1944. Gretl and her sister Elza have been dropped off of a train in the midst of a war. With the touch of coldness shivering within, these girls must find a way to an uncle in Switzerland. For Gretl, the journey will not be easy or safe. Found by a farmer, Gretl and Elza are taken to his home. Alone and afraid, Gretl discovers that her journey will now be decided by a young man who is trying to save his country. Jakob's journey begins at the bridge. What he discovers will lead him beyond his family, his country, and his loyalties. Once Jakob gets to the farm, he is forced into an additional assignment. "A cold hand closed around his heart...," Gretl will be his young charge. How will he ever get her to Switzerland? As their days together began forming a pattern to life, Gretl discovers a hunger for education and God. Her days at the convent were filled with discoveries. Her evenings were filled with Jakob and the promise that one day they would find her uncle. For Jakob, Warsaw was becoming dangerous. The Home Army was beginning to collaborate with the Red Army and Jakob knew that he would not be able to look after Gretl any longer. Jakob learns about the Afrikaner desire to take orphans who were "pure Aryan" bloodlines into Africa for adoption. Would it be a land of milk and honey for Gretl? He knew that the South African government was "staunchly" opposed to Communism, she would be safe with a family that would look after her and give her a new beginning. For Gretl, 1948 would be the beginning of a new journey...a new life. For Jakob a piece of his heart would be forever lost. As Gretl is awaiting the men who will come for the orphans, she has been entrusted with the secrecy of her past, of her heritage, of her faith. Now she must embrace her future and find a new life with a new family. From the orphange, through the station at Hannover, across the sea into South Africa... Gretl learns to read Afrikaans books, she experiences the nightmares of fire, and she learns the uncertainty of beginning a life with people who are different than yourself. Yet, on the day she meets her new parents. Gretl becomes Grietjie. She is no longer an orphan. She has a strong daddy, a loving mother, an older brother, and a very sweet Grandpa John. As Grietjie grows up, she is loved beyond measure. By 1956 she has become Grietjie Neethling. By 1956, Jakob has become a man fleeing Poland. He has left Poland, his family, his career, everything... except for a "yellowed newspaper cutting of a small girl with a broad smile and ribbon in her hair." This story is a "righteous" read. The characters have an inner depth with so many dimensions, a depth in which the story is given life of its own. The interwoven historical facts are presented as seeds of a "reality" that have been scattered from the teachings within our classrooms. The hope and the goodness of Gretl's journey touches a chord within your spirit. Her innocence and determination ignites the whispering of a promise yet to be fulfilled. Beautifully crafted, this novel will become a treasured tale to be shared beyond your shelves, MrsK

Reason for My Hope Salvation
by
Billy Graham

, October 11, 2015
This man's voice resonates deep within. Just his name brings back all of those moments in front of our television. A gathering "snuggled together" listening to what inspiration might feed us for the next few moments... the next few months... the next season. In the introduction, Billy Graham, reminds us that you can "glimpse the glow of hope" simply by lighting a match and burning a candle. Have I been "nourishing" my soul enough that a flame burns within? Can others see the "glow of hope" in my actions or with my words? If "Hope pierces the darkness," if "Hope brings comfort," then what am I showing all of you? Hope. What are you searching for? What are you needing? Have you done all that you could do, yet still feel empty or unfulfilled? Is the way of this world spiraling to a point that you can't decipher what is truth? If so... there is hope! Beautifully written, this book will help your spirit soar, MrsK

Michael Symons 5 in 5 for Every Season 165 Quick Dinners Sides Holiday Dishes & More
by
Michael Symon

, September 26, 2015
Organized into seasons, these meals are "plentiful" with year round basics and local produce. Beginning with what is in your pantry, the opening season is the spring. Michael entices you out of the winter and into the farmers' markets. Keeping meals "light" and "quick and easy" here are a few that interested our family: Spring Pea "Guacamole" with grilled bread and radish (pg.14): perfect entree for any gathering, especially book clubs Grilled chicken breast with shaved fennel and orange salad (pg.23): zesty mixture of goodness Grilled "Skirt" steak with mushroom gravy (pg.26): okay... this is for the men and for me... the gravy made my mouth water especially "yummy" for those spring rainy evenings Couscous with peas, asparagus, and Parmesan (pg. 55): such a simple side dish or what's for lunch I agree with Michael that there is nothing better than a "sun-warmed tomato... sprinkled with a little sea salt." Summertime is not just fast meals, it is always the best when it comes straight from your garden onto your table: Grilled zucchini rolls with Feta and almonds (pg.61): yum with a zing (definitely one for our book club) Spicy Salami, cantaloupe, and mint salad (pg.86): add the chilled Greek yogurt and summer flavors will zizzle Spinach salad with strawberries, red onions, and Feta (pg.102): this could be my lunch all summer long Warm brown butter vanilla blueberries (pg.109): over vanilla ice cream on a hot summer night... oh yeah! "The skies are bright blue and the leaves are turning every shade of red, orange, and yellow. I'm thinking of football, pumpkin patches, and backyard fires." And so am I.... Grilled cheese with Havarti and apple (pg.116): an adult grilled cheese that makes your mouth water Orecchiette with Brussels sprouts and bacon (pg.125): a fall flavor with pasta... yes please! Kale and apple salad with Maple Cider dressing (pg.150): add a warm buttered baguette and enjoy while watching a storm Winter is all about the comfort food... and of course a good book! What is inspiring me to rethink some "old favorites" is Michael's tantalizing idea to add citrus zest and juices to the winter gloom. Rigatoni with pulled chicken and Feta (pg.171): simple yes, but so inviting Chicken cutlets with Swiss Chard and pomegranate (pg.178): breaded chicken served on top of a Swiss Chard salad, yum! Chicken breasts with bacon and Brussel Sprouts (pg.184): its the flavors cooked to perfection and the Dijon mustard that brings flavor to a new level Butternut squash couscous with mint and almonds (pg.204): this is what's cooking for our fall book club Is anyone hungry? These recipes are quick to prepare. Easy to cook. Tantalizing to your taste buds. The only spoiler with this cook book, is that some of the recipes have ingredients that might not fit your budget or your family. The proof of a good recipe, is in the making... switch it out and Michael's recipe has now become your own! Enjoy browsing, cooking, and discovering tasty newness for your table, MrsK

The Potter's Lady

In 1872, Rose McKay has just completed her studies in design at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. Although she is very gifted, and has in fact just been honored with the "Excellence in Design Award" for her upholstering fabric design, she is anxious to leave the school. She would miss her mentor-ship with Mrs. Fisk, but not the cruelty of the other patrons. She is in fact, quite excited about returning home and beginning a life away from the ridicule of those whom considered her not of their standing. As her brother, Ewan, escorts her home to the hills of West Virginia, Rose learns of her family's decision to purchase either a brick yard or a pottery. Of course, since Rose has been educated in the crafting of designs, she has hope that the family will choose a pottery. With the joyous visions of crafting designs for a family pottery is a most anxious concern about a "surprise" welcome home party. Rose detests social engagements, especially one designed around her. It is on their way home in which Rose will discover the path for her future. Their side journey to the Bancock Pottery Works, will provide countless hours for Rose to consider the "needs" of others, the frustration of Mr. Rylan Campbell, her personal challenges with relationships, and her talents in creating designs that will be "exceptional" enough to win back customers and the biggest designing opportunity for any potter. Rylan Campbell is a man who is dedicated to the owner of Bancock Pottery Works, in fact it is his loyalty to Mr. Bancock in which Rylan will discover his spiritual strength and wisdom to help the McKay's transition into the pottery business. Rylan will discover the power of prayer, the "ownership" of decisions for the pottery and its employees, his craftsmanship as a designer, and the wisdom in dealing with his frustrated relationship with Rose and her determination. "Though a dart of fear shot through her, Rose straightened her shoulders and avowed their pottery would become the finest and most prosperous in all of West Virgina." What will determine the pottery's prosperity or failure will be determined by Rose's ability to choose truth beyond her passion. Will she continue a business and social relationship with Joshua Harkness, and all of the "assumed" benefits for the pottery? Can Rose trust Rylan's insights and suggestions? Can she trust her own instincts? Ewan's whole future as a business man, as a family man, and as brother will be conflicted between his trust in Rose and his partnership with Rylan. Can this team discover why their contract bids are always turned down? Will it be possible for them to win the contract from the Franklin Hotel? With a story line that is woven together by faith, honesty, and trust, The Potter's Lady will offer you an insight into a woman's determination in "seeking to know" truth. Experience Rose's journey and a story well crafted, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Unprepared for his mom's text from the Summit Bookshop, Peak had no clue that in a few hours he would be on his way to Afghanistan. When Peak arrives at the book store, he is surprised by the Everest film crew, who were not there just to discuss the completion of the documentary nor its airing on ESPN. They were there with a personal request for Peak to join the Peace Climb. The whole "shebang" would be paid for by Sebastian Plank, a very rich high-tech businessman. The Peace Climb had over two hundred, under eighteen, climbers from around the world applying for the climb. Not a climbing scenario that Peak wanted to be a part of, that is until the crew informs him that he will be the only US representative. Plus the crew would not be hired to film the climb... and there was the incentive of the "top of the line" gear. If you know anything about climbers, you know that the newest gear is an obsession (for me it's great books, for cooks it's all about the cooking gadgets). What exactly causes Peak to change his mind? Is it his mom's declaration that she is going? Is it a challenge that is too tempting? Was it for his friends? Would Peak have said yes if he knew that the political unrest and risks would not be minimal? At base camp, Peak meets the "man in charge," Phillip Stockwell and his personal assistant, Cindy. Two Afghans carrying assault rifles, Ebadullah and Elham. One of the climbers Josette Charbonneau, a French Ambassador's daughter. Then there is Rafe Rounder, an Aussie who tells a few tales. Aki, from Japan and Choma from the Ukraine. The only good news for Peak was that Zopa (the cragely monk/sherpa from his Everest climb) was assigned to this climb. Peak soon learns that when Zopa was contacted by Plank, Sun-jo's name was on the list. Sun-jo was a sherpa and friend to Peak during the Everest climb. Why did Zopa cross his name off the list? What was the real reason for Zopa being here... with him... and his mom... on this mysterious climb? Zopa and his feelings are "often a reality," so what is it about this climb that Zopa sensed? Nothing about climbing can be casual or expected. Nothing about climbing is easy. Everything about climbing...is survival. What Peak has learned from Zopa is to pay attention... pay attention to patterns... pay attention to things that are not suppose to be! What begins as a video stunt becomes a survival reality. Not everyone will live to tell about it. For Peak that means that his visions of the shen, "ghost" snow leopard, could prove to be his means of survival. From the master of "cliff-hangers," this climb will be even worst that Peak imagined. So "anchor" and "clip" your locking carabiner and get ready to ascend over the edge... Looney Experiment
by
Luke Reynolds

, August 24, 2015
Atticus is intelligent, his imagination is like a script waiting to be published. He is kind, compassionate, and being bullied. Middle school is difficult for everyone, yet this year in particular is made of the stuff that would cause "cracks" in his schemata about life. This year the bullying goes beyond words... this year his father needs a "Figure-Myself-Out" leave of absence ... this year he realizes that a girl friend is no longer just a friend... this year he discovers the strength with in... because this year Mr. Looney comes as a substitute to his middle school English class. At Levy Field, Atticus knows that he "stinks" in baseball. Danny the bully, creates the worst possible atmosphere every time he goes to bat. Atticus becomes Fatticus the boy who can't play ball! Oh how he wishes he could pay back Danny, the bully machine, or better known as "Fanny" in his imagination. "So, my life is pretty much a mess, and into all of this confusion comes a really, really, really, really old guy..." Could you imagine, right away all Mr. Looney does is stare. Not just at the class but up close and personal in each of their faces. Is he some kind of a psycho? Is he mentally unstable or legally insane? Wait.. what, did he really stare me down and then "wink?" On the second day of class, Atticus arrives to an emptied classroom... including no teacher. When no one shows up, the class is "stunned" into silence... that is until a loud crash brings in loud jungle sounds. Far back in the classroom a door opens and in comes Mr. Looney... "... wearing these ratty jeans... some kind of tie-dyed T-shirt... carrying a huge wooden stick... and hunched over..." "What the heck?!" Once Mr. Looney begins making noises, animal sounds, and made up words ("OOO-SHI-MONGOOO... OOO-SI-MONGOOO... KACHICHI... KACHICHI!"). The craziness gets out of control. Pipsie Nature Detective The Disappearing Caterpillar

Pipsie is a nature detective. She is so inquisitive, so determined, and very savvy as a detective. Her mission is to find her friend Frannie. Now Frannie was an unexpected friend who showed up one morning on Alfred Z Turtle (not just her pet but her assistant, her partner, her catalyst)... "As sure as the shell on his back, there were Yellow and Black stripes on his head!" As their friendship "transforms," it is with dismay that seven days later Frannie goes missing. "With out a doubt," Pipsie and Alfred will search in "dark and icky places... sweet and sticky places... inside and outside..." there is no place they won't search! This delightful mystery is quite "snappy." Pipsie overflows with personality. The scientific explanation of a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly is detailed with perfected word choice, journal illustrations (of course a detective keeps a detailed notebook of inquiry), and factual information that matches the audience's sense of discovery. Leaving no learning unavailable, there is six fun facts for discovery, as well as a Pipsie learning link for "closer" inspection. The attention to detail, especially in the journal entries provides endless opportunities for reader's to discuss and choose to copy into their own "nature detective" notebooks. A must read... re-read... read again... and share adventure, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Aoleon The Martian Girl: Science Fiction Saga - Part 1 First Contact
by
Brent Levasseur

, August 14, 2015
Aoleon is just out for a solo flight before taking her "flying" exam. She adores the freedom, she enjoys zooming close to objects, she likes being creative with her "crop" designs. Earth is her playground. Gilbert can't help but wonder if his recurring dreams are linked to his neighbor's mysterious crop-circle formations. With sleep being evasive, Gilbert heads to his telescope. With all of the fighting downstairs he wishes: "Please send me an angel to take me away from here." Zipping and zooming with excitement, Aoleon descends while the "stars twinkle a little brighter as if performing a dance, and the lights from the cities below resembled a sea filled with glowing phosphorescence." Giggling with delight she began crafting her newest designs. With geometric patterns, she merges the "languages of art with mathematics" as a message to the Terraians... "I am here... I am intelligent... and I am not of this Earth!" Back in Nebraska, Gilbert notices that a star is increasing in size... everything has gone quiet except the "thumping" of his heart. Once outside, he trips (literally) into an out of this world journey with a girl... who is blue! Gilbert is not the only one who noticed that odd star entering his back yard... McConnell Air Force Base has a fighter in the sky. His neighbor Farmer Johnson, who believes a shotgun is the only way to get trespassers off his farm, enters his field. In need of protection, Aolean raises her arms... and... well lets just say Gilbert begins his journey by accidentally releasing a "fire blast" of a zero-point energy field around each of Farmer Johnson's cows. Once in the air, multiple events begin to unfold. Angry Dog, the air force interceptor encounters flying cows... yep... cows in the sky. Not so friendly missiles are locking onto their marks. A global chase begins as a series of events reigns down on Terra... giant shock waves... huge avalanches... "rooster-tail" explosions of water... a President in a bathrobe... civilian bystanders "hitting the ground"... and Aoleon's mother calling her home for the "evening consumption." Enjoy this "out-of-this-world" journey, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Wonder
by
R J Palacio

, August 14, 2015
Once in awhile you read a book in which the character remains important deep within your thoughts and heart. A character so moving, so special, and so inspiring... so alive. Wonder is a book in which the main character has made the decision to enter Middle School after being home schooled. It is a decision that will leave him vulnerable and exposed. A courageous step beyond the safety of his family. Meet Auggie (August Pullman), who was born with a facial deformity, intelligence, and courage. All of his life he has endured the devastating looks, reactions, and fearfulness of strangers. Now is the time for him to become a student among many who are finding their way as middle school students. Given the "all encompassing" emotions and hormonal changes, middle school can be a roller coaster of fear, bullying, anger, and uncertainty. Why would Auggie want to begin public school at such a time is beyond reasoning for most of us. Yet, Auggie is blessed beyond measure with courage and a determination to live without "superficial" boundaries. "I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things.... But I know ordinary kids don't make other kids run away screaming in playgrounds." Mr. Tushman of Beecher Prep school has prearranged a meeting with Auggie and his mother before the first day of school. Like any ordinary "new" student, Auggie will meet some of the staff and tour the school. It is with great foresight, that Auggie's tour is lead by a few "homeroom" students: Jack is the first student that will extend friendship in the halls and classrooms. Yet, at some point he will need to decide if he wants to fit in with his old friends or stay friends with Auggie. Jullian is rude and obnoxious (you know that type that acts one way with adults and another with students). The type that is loud, arrogant, and will not let Auggie escape being bullied. When push comes to shove, Auggie will demonstrate true character strength. The question will be if Jullian will learn acceptance of Auggie as an "ordinary" kid... and a friend? Charlotte is an "artsy" girl. She enjoys all aspects of school, including science. She doesn't waiver in her support for Auggie, unless maybe it's in the lunch room. Will Charlotte be strong enough to overcome peer pressure? Mr. Browne is Auggie's English teacher. He values his students and begins school with learning about precepts (any important thought, motto, or saying that guides you when making really important decisions). His students will write-to-learn a new precept every month: "When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind." Dr. Wayne W. Dyer Summer is the first student who braves the whispers in the lunch room and chooses to sit at the table with Auggie. It might seem a small gesture to many... but not only will it prove to be a courageous step towards friendship... it will also be an experience of a life time for both of them. Whether it is Auggie's first birthday party, the first Halloween school event, the first school trip (outdoor school away from home), or the first meeting with his sister's high school friends... Auggie is on a life-changing quest... to be just another "ordinary kid!" The depth of characterization will leave a lasting "thumb-print" upon every reader's heart. Those middle school experiences will be confirmed and/or "pushed" to a new level of awareness with dignified choices. The story line is expertly woven between Auggie's story and the voices of those who are changed by their encounters with Auggie. There is so much that Auggie offers, care enough to experience the "Wonder," MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

The Lost Prophet
by
James B. McPike
kim_shealy
, August 01, 2015
"Here Lies the Great Hebrew Prophet Zechariah." "Just follow me, please, and I will show you the highlight of our tour..." Holy sites create such a sense of being grounded. An inspiring "truth" when history can welcome you back into the fold. Unfortunately, many sites are entangled with controversial ownership... re-written history presented as truth... consistent vandalism... and threatened destruction. While enjoying the "blissful" Tahitian shores, Vince Ramsey and April Fulton were cherishing all of the splendor of the moment. Drifting thoughts of just giving up their old life and reinventing a new "islander" life was very tempting. An enjoyable dream... until a mysterious message was passed onto Vince. Did the bartender give him a used napkin by mistake? Who even knew where to contact him? What could be so urgent? Daniel Kopinsky, a counterintelligence techie for the Ministry of Jerusalem, knew all about the "most brilliant investigator," Vince Ramsey. The only one who could track down and stop the power behind the destruction of the holy sites of the Prophets. While Vince and April have been away, the Tomb of Prophets became nothing more than rubble. Who committed the "atrocious" act? Who would have absolutely no "regard" for the sanctity of human life, history, or the "priceless" shrine? The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) knows that such destruction is connected to someone loyal to ISIS. Vince is trained, and perhaps the only one who can track, eliminate, and deliver justice for such atrocious attacks of evil. Once back in Israel, Vince learns of another target. This time it will prove catastrophic for the ministry and IDF. Who is this woman caught on tape? What is her connection? Who is the mastermind behind the destruction of the prophet's tombs? What are they after and why destroy the sites? There must be a central, command location... can it be found before any other site is destroyed? Vince's biblical training leads to discernment about various scriptural passages, its depth of meaning, and burial location of the most sacred biblical prophet in all of history. Will he be able to keep the remains of Moses from harm? "How were you able to ... defeat those Israeli soldiers? In the shadowy backseat something of a diabolical snicker crossed Markovich's face. No one else saw it..." As the body count increases, time is running out for Vince. Once the identity of the "Bandit" is learned, you are drawn in to the arrogance of evil. Embedded within the plot is the truth that this evil is not against man (completely insignificant), it is against God and eliminating any "sign" of the holy prophets. With diabolical schemes "exploding" across the Middle East, you will become anxious as the pace shifts into an extreme chase. The characters are not super human, they endure doubt, pain, and rage against a force that appears to be "protected" and dismissive. The biblical locations are perfected with simplicity, as well as intrigue (I found myself looking online for added information and of course those visual connections). I had not read the first book, Realm of the Unknown, but now that I am "hooked" on these characters and their missions... it won't be long before another review will be written! Enjoy, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

The Line
by
William Lj Galaini
kim_shealy
, July 09, 2015
Set in the futuristic station of Janus, a recent discovery had put everyone on edge. It's one thing to be discovering history through "unseen" incursions and quite another "expedition" when faced with an evil that is wielding chaos throughout time. The assignment is a five year mission surveying the differences between time lines (Earth's and Beta's). The expectation would be maybe of few "irregularities" because of "inaccurate historical data." What was found will prove even more frightening than war itself. There are more than "big discrepancies," there are "entire generations" missing, instead of a continuum that mirrors each other... certain events have "drastic" differences. Meet the Janus crew: Mary is an Humanities major. She is the archival historian for Janus. Back home she studied Ballet and is very graceful in her movements. She contemplates the reasons for all human inter actions and she cares deeply about justice. Ingrid is no nonsense about her discernment's, her "controller" duties, and the complexity of "leaping between time lines." She is passionate about following protocol and making sure all are safe without altering the Alpha or the Beta timelines. She is the driving force for everything running smoothly, every detail of life aboard Janus is under her supervision, including the pantry. Calculated chess moves are entertaining, so winning has little to do with the games. Wyatt is a trained vet, he is unassuming, quietly an alert observer, and the one "jumper" who is overly concerned about the inhumane "vigilante" which is wreaking havoc within the timelines. His one solace from home is a rocking chair, his guitar, and peaceful melodies. Rupert is a trained "jumper" who can disarm or defuse any situation with a smile. Jack is a mathematical genius, as well as the Janus pool-hall champion. "Gus" Gustavo is Janus' commander, medic, PR man, and their link to home. He plots out the "fractures," locations, and dates. Data driven, he will be the mediator for their concerns, their fears, and their ideas. Evil/Xeno a tall, lean, and muscled faceless time-tormentor. With golden eyes it scans for any survivors. It appears to have a strong "social justice" motive for time traveling and "snuffing out certain events in history." Technologically advanced and equipped with a WWII German flame-thrower ... it is steals into history and attacks. There are many "unforeseen" twists and turns as the story progresses. Not every mission began once the crew was chosen. What is behind the one locked door? Were there any incursions into the future, and if so why? Will an execution shut down Janus' mission? Who or what is Magus Kami? Why does Wyatt solo an incursion once Rupert is in need of medical attention? With a shout out to the author, The Line is a wonderful read partly due to the crafting of a well woven story line and partially due to the authentic word choice (it can be disastrous using unknown "technical terms for a reader when terms are used and there is no detailed connectors to our everyday life). These characters have comfortable personalities. Janus and all historical time frames are realistic, specific, and honed to perfection (every sense is activated). Discussions are perfected with wit and seasoned with friendly sarcasm (there are a few sexual innuendos and content, as well as cursing). As for the finally... spoiler alert... I'm still in shock! This was a fantastic journey, an unexpected discovery, and a definite "must share." Journeying beyond the known into the unknown... be willing to "suit up" for this incursion... Believe Kids' Edition, Paperback: Think, Act, Be Like Jesus
by
Zondervan
kim_shealy
, July 06, 2015
With excellent formatting, this Kids' Edition is uniquely designed for individualized study. For me, I celebrated the "key" components (question, idea, verse) outlined before each of the teachings. The bonus are the follow-up discussion questions, which can be discussed as a family or individually journaled by the child. The possibilities are endless (individual study, nightly family study, personal reflective-journalism with sharing, etc.). The concept is simple, plant the Word of God and let Him "garden" its fruition. "...Believe is an action word. That means God doesn't want you to just believe in your head that His Word is truth; He wants you to believe it with your whole heart so that it changes how you live your life and relate to your family and friends. He wants to put the 'extra' in your 'ordinary' so you can live an 'extraordinary' life in Christ. The possibilities are limitless with God for those who simply BELIEVE!" Organized into three categories (Think, Act, and Be), the reader is provided the opportunities to discover their "individualized" relationship with our God: Think: "What do you believe?" How will you walk with God every day in every way? Going deeper to discover God, salvation, the Bible, church, humanity, compassion, stewardship, and eternity. ACT: "What should I do?" What would Jesus do? Learning about worship, prayer, bible study, single-mindedness, total surrender, spiritual gifts, time, giving of resources, and sharing your faith. BE: "Who am I becoming?" Recognizing the spiritual fruits and gifts within yourself and others... love, joy, peace, self-control, hope, patience, kindness/goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and humility. As the reader completes their last discovery, there is a section for them to reconfirm their belief (this section re-enforces their decision to follow Christ as their personal Savior and accept the Word of God as truth). Within the Epilogue section, parents and teachers have a chance to consider what their mentor-ship task entails. Discovering how "walking beside them day-to-day" will bring about application of God's word to their thinking. "They will need someone to offer them grace when they fail or go backwards. They will need someone to cheer them on when they get it right." My journey with all the children God has brought into my life is an ongoing journey, this book is an outstanding resource for any of those moments in which these young hearts are under my charge... It is exciting to have this "tool" within reach... at any moment when an opportunity comes "knocking," MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

The Mapmaker's Children

McCoy, Sarah

, July 01, 2015
Sarah knew that her father's mission didn't end with his death, in stead it would be the promise of a better life for many. Although there many "terrible deeds," she found strength in knowing that "people were capable of more love and benevolence than they realized." Sarah trusted that an "individual heart" could reign over the "collective public voice." Giving "rise as unstoppable as a river after a storm." With the departure from the Hill's home, the Brown's return to North Elba will begin unfolding new avenues for Sarah. With a series of letters between Freddie and Sarah, you will discover the many challenges, heartaches, strengths, and joys in which a life molded by faith endures and overcomes. Then there is Eden's discovery of doll's head in the root cellar of her newly purchased "old house" in New Charlestown, WV. Although Eden is a woman with much character strength, her latest miscarriage has created such agony she no longer feels hope or love. Her journey will be blessed with a neighboring girl (Cleo), an unexpected gift (Cricket), the return of her brother (Denny), and the patient love of her husband (Jack). So many facets within Eden's life will become illuminated once she begins unraveling the mystery of the doll's head, an old button, and an antique key. Could her house become a registered landmark on Apple Hill? Can she learn to love beyond her losses? Will she discover a secret trait to the doll's head in which history could once again tell the story about the Underground Railroad? Did the "doll massacre" have something to do with the her doll's head? What decisions must Eden make in order to realize her passion behind the words: "Come home to New Charlestown." With artistic splendor, John shares his techniques and wisdom with those "called" to see the world from a camera's lens. This guide book is organized with starting points such as the right gear options, how to get started, and lenses. He moves you into learning about composition and close-ups. Finally he inspires you with how his world of photography has evolved. Whether you have taken photography classes or photos cause you to stop in "awe" and ponder how those shots were captured, there is always room for more insights. This guide book is filled with valuable suggestions. John has a talent for inspiring you to "look" beyond what is seen and "seek" that which can be portrayed with splendor. "To be a better nature photographer, be a better naturalist. The more you know about nature, the more you will see to photograph. Develop a deeper compassion for the world around us, and live by an ethic of concern for the subject matter." Become inspired, be willing to become mentored by this gifted photographer, and begin using your lens to "engage the viewer's mind or emotions..." MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Devotions from the Garden: Finding Peace and Rest from Your Hurried Life
by
Miriam Drennan

, April 25, 2015
Filled with photos of garden beauty, this devotional brightens your path regardless of the time or the season. Organized in the fashion of a gardening manual, you discover a connection between sowing seeds in the ground and the sowing of God's words within your spirit. Both of which begin with God's transforming Grace. With every two page devotion, you discover God's word, a gardening thought-hint-inspiration and a beautiful prayer which ignites a peaceful moment of contemplation with our Lord. With such a hurried life style, these moments become treasures in which you quickly relinquish your cares as you bask in His peace. Think about those times when you sit on a covered patio, an ice tea is at hand, there is a gentle cool breeze as the sun goes down. It seems so quiet, so peaceful, and so refreshing. Or maybe the sea breeze is gently kissing your face as the waves are lulling you into a joy far removed from your daily cares. Now consider your garden spot, a place that is so quickly available... make a little spot of comfort, one that you can sit and ponder the glories (the blessings) that are sprinkled with nourishing love. Joyous moments just for your own peaceful retreat. This devotional becomes your "Miracle Grow," MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Motivate Your Child: A Christian Parent's Guide to Raising Kids Who Do What They Need to Do Without Being Told
by
Scott Turansky
kim_shealy
, April 22, 2015
Raising children who do what they need to do without being told is the goal of this guide book. Developing self-motivation in your child can be "hair-raising" without guidance. Choosing to "deliberately work on spiritual and moral development" is an investment in their character that will produce a life time of harvested wisdom. As their guardian, we are "giving them the "tools" to navigate life." "Happiness may be found in the destination, but character is built in the journey." Have you considered using a "heart-based" approach to discipline? Instead of using motivators that are externally "rewarded," why not teach internal responsibilities. Teaching strategies of firmness, correction, consequences, and thinking beyond self. With this "guide book" you can "use areas of strength in a child's life to help them improve areas of weakness." Are you ready to get started? Go for it... MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot.com

Salad Love Crunchy Savory & Filling Meals You Can Make Every Day
by
David Bez

, March 21, 2015
David explains that he is not a chef (I disagree), he simply wanted to eat "healthier." Once inspired, he began researching "nutrition, eating seasonally, various ingredients: grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables." He wanted to finish his lunch "feeling energized and ready to work." So he transformed a desk drawer and began shopping for what was "fresh, tasty, and quick." Using various cold ingredients, fresh or previously cooked vegetables, and fresh dressings... he was able to create his "fresh" salads at his desk for over 1,000 lunches. David "sets" your salad with simple tips: assembling the salad; basic ingredients; "raw" veggie combinations; "enhancing" proteins; tantalizing toppings, herbs,spices-dressings; plus which preparation tools will be needed. After a year of salad lunches, David noticed how co-workers began "embracing healthier" habits. They even started "Salad Clubs!" An added bonus... these salads will fit "everyone's" time constraints, tastes, moods, and budgets! Salads that "caught" my eyes: Chickpeas, Couscous, & Cherry Tomatoes: pg. 43 5 summer ingredients with a refreshing vinegar/olive oil dressing New Potatoes, Green Beans & Black Olives: pg.49 add in the chicken strips and top it with a basil vinaigrette Feta, Watermelon & Fennel: pg.52 with a topping of pomegranate seeds and cashews (excellent hot August dinner) Oak-Smoked Cheddar, Peaches & Blueberries: pg.59 goodness gracious this is one designed for company! Roasted Peppers, Chickpeas & Barley: pg.65 a light and hearty salad for those August/September meals Tuna, Couscous, Green Beans & Cherry Tomatoes: pg.133 add olives, feta, and olive oil with a splash of lemon Celery, Chickpeas, Pumpkin Seeds & Mint: pg.189 surprising taste combo, add some light yogurt to olive oil/vinegar Cauliflower, Green Beans & Spinach: pg.236 add shaved almonds and pesto for a full-filling meal Pasta, Green Beans, Kale & Cottage Cheese: pg.268 so many possibilities with this salad (change out topping "go-to) Cauliflower, Hazelnuts & Dried Apricots: pg.283 simplistic yum! The Light Between Oceans
by
ML Stedman
kim_shealy
, March 19, 2015
It is April 1926 and Isabel is at the cliff's edge tending the small cross and the newly planted rosemary bush. For just a brief moment she thinks she hears her child's cry. "Things turned up in their own time, in their own way. The light station sat solidly in the middle of the island, the keeper's cottage and outbuildings hunkered down beside the lighthouse, cowed from decades of lashing winds." Janus Rock the home of the light station built in 1889. It becomes the home for Tom an honored veteran from the Western Front. A man of honor, a keeper of the light and lives of those he loves. A man indebted to the voices and memories of the men who did not return from the front. A quiet and gentle man who is destined to keep the light for any and all who are traveling pass West Australia. "Gradually, lives wove together once again into a practical sort of fabric in which every thread crossed and recrossed the others through school and work and marriage, embroidering connections invisible to those not from the town." On a sunny winter's afternoon, Tom sat on a bench near the jetty at Point Partageuse. A young woman was feeding bread to seagulls, and for Tom her animated joy and laughter would be the unexpected "gift" that will nurture love, a sense of home, hope, and sorrow. "She's still a beauty, still after all these years... The white stone light tower rested against the slate sky like a stick of chalk. It stood a hundred and thirty feet high, near the cliff at the island's apex..." Not only was that young woman a surprise when Tom had been at the jetty, she proves to be the "unexpected" letter that will warm is heart and the long winter season. As a light keeper, there isn't much to do other than maintaining the light. Many have been known to knit or carve scrimshaw... for Tom it will be the correspondence from Isabel that will fill his days with light. With a two week break from Janus, Tom and Isabel will spend endless days together discovering life. For Isabel, although younger than Tom, she will begin feeling the "urgency" call to not "put off" what matters. "On the lights... you account for every single day. You write up the log, you report what's happened, you produce evidence that life goes on." And yet, on April's day of the miracle, decisions will be made. A baby has drifted to the Janus shore. The little one's father is dead in the boat, a mother's shawl lies in the hull. A baby! Any parent will know the feelings of looking into the eyes of a little one. A few will know of the tears within your soul due to the sorrow of a hope that has died. For Isabel the death of her second infant was that type of a turning point. With a mother's broken heart, she held this baby and knew that God had given her a miracle. For Tom, he knew that her request would bring the most "unbearable" decision he would ever make. For little Lucy's christening, they gathered at the church. While they waited in the shade, a fresh granite stone ushered in the reality of truth. "In loving memory of Franz Johannes Roennfeldt, dearly beloved husband of Hannah, and of their precious daughter Grace Ellen. Watched over by God." Guilt and love can be a dangerously lonely season. How can you make something right if it will cause "unbearable" pain for someone else? With the passing of two years, Lucy turns four and her life is filled with the joys of being the only child on Janus. Childhood memories that are so sweet. Until the moment that the boat arrives and takes them from the Light: "The island swims away from them, fading into an ever more miniature version of itself, until it is just a flash of memory, held differently, imperfectly by each passenger." Without hope... all will need a "guiding" light... So beautifully crafted, it is a journey of a life-time, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Ella Minnow Pea A Novel In Letters
by
Mark Dunn
kim_shealy
, March 18, 2015
With a series of letters, two young ladies (cousins) begin a journey of desperation for all literary purposes. Ella is still on the island of Nollopton. She will be the voice of reason, updates, and humorous re-tellings about her village, the people, the High Island Council, and of course what happens as the letters begin dropping from the top of the cenotaph in the town center. Tassie and her mother has been away on a "stateside" sojourn. Their young adult voices will bring insight into the insanity in which the HIC will begin wielding power over the town. Are you wondering what is going on... well it is rather comical at first. I mean, consider what you would be doing when an alphabet letter becomes "un-glued" and falls to its death at the heart of the town's city center. You see, once upon a time a very prestigious gentleman, the esteemed Neville Nollop, became a literary "giant" when he penned the famous pangram: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Although there was very little recognition within the states, the village erected a statue and placed tiles for the pangram upon the statue. On July 17, the "Z" fell. The council retreated behind close doors to deliberate what the village should do. With complete control over the villagers, the council declares that no one could ever use the "Z" again. Yep, no more words in which the "Z" is written could ever be viewed, spoken, written, sung, or repeated. Imagine what that means for teachers, or the public library, songs, store items, and personal names. There would of course be one warning with three succeeding penalties if one was not carefully guarding their tongues or refusing to remove any items in which the offensive "Z" might appear. As people began adjusting to this new mandate, the bees began creating quite the havoc around town and in particular at the farms. "With the prohibition, the reading of all books containing the unfortunate letter will have to be outlawed..." Seriously, what would we do? I stand proudly, shoulder to shoulder with Tassie: "I am bezide myself!" Consider the ramifications of such a mandate. The confiscation of any books (including text books), the destruction of personal records or letters, let alone the widespread fear that you could slip and speak the prohibited letter... which could send you on the way to banishment from Nollop. Within a few weeks the "Q" made its departure. By now everyone is stricken with fear of punishments. Turning your neighbors, family members, and teachers in due to an inability to guard one's mouth is becoming a reality. Some are leaving the island and not by choice. Have you considered what becomes of their personal items or their land? Why would any town agree to these mandates? "Jumpin' Jehoshaphat!" "The *uick brown fox *umps over the la*y dog." The next letter to *epart causes the *ays of the week to be change*. Consi*er the extensive energy one woul* nee* to put into action in or*er to communicate. I *o believe that *uct taping one's mount coul* prove beneficial. What will they *o without the "E?" Nollopianians must prepare for the moment in which language ceases to exist! Please *on't wait too long... The *elightful word play is just too scrumptious to miss... MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Uma has the gift of being a healer and even though her culture doesn't accept a female as a healer... sometimes you just have to follow your calling. Within the time of 1210-1213, Uma will face the dangers of being a healer. Unfortunately not everyone requesting healing will be blessed, grateful, or healed. Not everyone will be helpful, supportive, or of honor. When Uma and her father are kidnapped by the Queen, there is a threat in which Uma's village will be under siege until the Queen is with child. Being part English will have no value, only the precious herbs and time will prove the safety of her village. On that devastating morning when her father does not awaken, Uma will need every ounce of strength and faith as the only Adan (healer). Pendragon Castle will prove either its threats or royal promises, Uma will prove her calling or die without every going home to her beloved Euit people and mother. "Vazan flicked her tail, the spikes rising to my waist before the scaled flesh slapped the ground again. Was she going to leave me now that Father was dead? I felt a sharp jolt of fear. I pinched the red dragons on my belt, as if squeezing hard enough, I could make her stay... I need you, Vazan. Don't go. Please don't leave me alone." With a voyage to Dragon's Keep, Uma is introduced to Jackrun Pendragon and his sister Tabitha. Everything about Dragon's Keep will prove to be enchanting. Here Uma will find friendship, someone to look after her, someone who will despise her, the true meaning of the fairies song "Fey Maiden," and the inner strength to protect those whom are worthy of her faith and trust. With a stunning eloquence of a story-weaver, this fantasy novel will delight you with characters so compelling they remain with you long after the final page is turned. The varied personalities of the dragons will cause you to smirk or hold your breath depending on your inner vision of their majestic power. The delightful detail of the fairy cavalcade as they arrive for the masked ball causes you to be so still that you fear their entry might be concealed if even a blink of your eye acknowledged your presence.Your heart will beat with trepidation as Prince Desmond decides to run and leap off the cliff onto the back of Babak. You will discover that you have been holding your breath as Jackrun and Uma venture deep within the underground catacombs. With stunning awe, your senses will be ignited as King Onadon gathers the elements: "King Onadon drew circles in the air, turning the long red flames into a spinning golden orb.... summoning water from the river. A wave sped toward us, tumbling in midair... A gust of wind blew across the meadow, spinning the fiery orb faster until it flung out chains of brilliant light. Wind whistled around us, lifting cloaks and hair and skirts... chill as the windy blast I'd felt on Faul's Leap." And... you will hear the beating of your heart as the council gathers for the trial. Both Kings, seven dragons, a half-fey, and all from Dragonswood and Pendragon... present for the final verdict! This journey was not as a quick read... it is meant to be savored... it is a place that beckons you back, Enjoy every detail within Dragonswood and Pendragon Castle, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot.com

Postage Stamp Vegetable Garden Grow Tons of Organic Vegetables in Tiny Spaces & Containers

Gardening, such a joy. Helping things to grow, so fulfilling. Harvesting, knowing the "fruit" of your labor. I love everything about gardening, except the frustrations of yellow leaves, spotted or spoiled flowers-fruit-veggies. I know nothing about gardening other than the joy and appreciation for spring to fall harvests. Hence the reason to review this book. Not only did the title catch my eye, but the idea that I could "learn" what makes a small garden grow lead me down this path with this book choice. Did you know that you can grow "as many carrots in 1 square foot as you can in a 12-foot row?" Or that "a 25-square-foot bed (5X5) will produce a minimum of 200 pounds of vegetables." All I could think of was wow! Really! The organization with in this small package of harvested wisdom is formatted for quick referencing: Arranging the Plants: pgs 11-27 Tips about which type a plant goes in which space, northern exposures, and garden plans Midget Vegetables: pgs 31-34 Every type available, potting sizes, when to plant, and harvesting time frames Soil Mixes: pgs 35-42 Types of compost and manures, tips for when to use, and earthworm power Getting the Ground Ready: pgs 43-49 Methods, crop rotation, soil deficiencies, and re-feeding Planting Time Clocks: pgs 50-63 Warm/Cool seasonal crops, Zone mapping, moon cycles, spacing, and sowing Watering Needs: pgs 64-67 The when, how much, and when again Vegetables and Herbs: pgs 68-164 Recommended varieties plus marginal to excellent ratings, cool or warm seasoned types, tips and tricks for producing bigger and tastier crops, problems, harvesting, and storage tips Companion Veggies & Flowers: pgs 165-171 Which variety grows best when planted together Pests, Diseases, & Critters: pgs 172-185 What to use: symptoms-pest-remedy Composting: pgs 186-194 How-to, what type is best for your area, and including symptoms-problems-solutions Seed Sources: pgs 195-203 Excellent tips and suggestions. Great tables and planning outlines. What it lacks are the photos... I am such a visual learner. What I gained from Karen's experience will show its worth in the first harvest. At least I do not feel so intimidated by my garden. I feel empowered with new resolution to go outside and sow to my hearts content. I feel that I can combat any type of plant "yuck." Let the sowing begin.... MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot.com

Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe

What a Heavenly break! Sometimes you are given a delightful story that is just endearing and a joy. Those types of moments in which you are curled up with quiet music, a great cup of tea, and no one in the house. This novel perfected that moment! Chelsea is reopening her family's cafe. She grew up in the converted Victorian house/cafe (my dream setting), and now it was her "inherited" chance at running the cafe. She is a single mom (considering divorcing her NFL husband) raising her daughter Emily and her son Hancock. "Hard to believe it's my home again. So many memories.... buy new rockers for the porch." With disappointments there is often an open door for success, we just have to be willing to take that leap of faith and trust in God's will. Chelsea will be pushed to the brink with tough decisions. The delight in the story is that she is never alone. There is family, neighbors, cafe staff, and of course her soon-to-be ex-husband (Sawyer). Little did she know that her quick prayer would be so amazingly answered. Meet Manny, or as Heaven would call him, Samuel: "It wasn't the black leather cowboy boots adorned with turquoise stones, nor the bright green pants, nor the floral Hawaiian shirt, nor even the Seattle Seahawks cap...." Chelsea knew him from somewhere, she just couldn't remember. And yet, Manny knew this assignment was going to be delightful battle. Not the most coordinated, nor the best dressed employee, Manny becomes a "grounding" force for everyone at the cafe. Chelsea must get customers... but how? Even though her heart recognizes God's words to ask and seek (Matthew 7:7), she can only offer up seven simple words: "Please, God. Is that too much to ask?" "Ding! Ding! Two striking figures entered the cafe, a brawny, dark-skinned man accompanied by a towing woman with blond hair and blazing blue eyes. 'Are you from the Olympics?' The woman smiled. 'We're here to upgrade your Internet service.'" Just a trial service is what Chelsea was told. The truth is... her cafe will never be the same. The only Internet connection her customers will ever get will be through a God Blog. Seriously, such a great connection! Think about it, with one question you could receive a personalized response from our Heavenly Father. What would you ask our Lord? As Chelsea's story unfolds, there is quite a few stumbling blocks "brewing," she will need to ask her question... so many will be depending on it. Even with Heavenly connections, Manny must find a way to help Chelsea find her way. Can you imagine how hard it would be to hear and see Heavenly things, yet you can't share any of it until the one you are guarding asks God? Even with family and friends, her customer questions, Divine answers, and a soon-to-be-ex-husband... Chelsea will need a break through that will lead her back to God! I will not spoil the ending of this most enjoyable journey. I will tell you that every character is someone you might know, maybe someone who touched your life and has been away for awhile, or someone you briefly met once upon a time. The cafe setting is perfectly designed as an invitation to experience a life as it is unfolding. The story line is simply "deliciously brewed." So... pour yourself a cup of tea... get comfortable... relax and enjoy, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot.com

Diaries of Robins Toys
by
Ken Lake
kim_shealy
, February 22, 2015
Robin is a boy with excellent imagination. He adores his weekly "jaunts" with his Grandad. He is very intuitive and has a heart for others. Grandad can be a bit zany, fun, and devoted to Grandma's "needs." Grandad also has a talent for finding just the right critter with a story to be told. Grandma takes the day to bake treats for their return and once in awhile understands the "treasure" that Grandad brings back to her. "Have you ever seen an old toy, perhaps in a cupboard, or in the attic or loft? Have you ever seen how sad they look at car boot sales, unwanted and unloved? Well, look at them closely, because every toy has a story to tell..." Meet the Critters: Bertie the Bee: "It has black and yellow stripes, huge eyes, and a fat body. It's wings were made of loops of wire and it had a big smile..." Bertie the Bee teaches Robin about how helpful bees are. Of course the lesson will be all about each bee having its own job and how working together brings a desired outcome. This tale helps Robin and his team realize that there is no I in team. Carla the Cow: "This cow had a long sad face. She did not look happy at all." The other animals found her to be "grumpy, bad mannered, bad tempered, selfish, and rude." Needless to say she was always complaining and therefore quite lonely. Robin learns that making an effort to be kind and doing something positive can be a life changer. Carlos the Cod:"I wondered what the world looks like for a fish?" Carlos helps Robin understand why not all friends are the best type of a friend, especially if they are older and wanting you to do things that could get you in trouble. This is one of my favorite tales, what would those fish on the "other side of the glass" think about us?" Donkey Hoo-Tee: "A rather tatty-looking donkey." With this tale, Robin learns about Spain, pack animals, and a friendship with the man from La Mancha. Sometimes a kindness can turn into a friendship for others. This tale took a turn, it not only taught about the animal... it taught a history lesson about a famous literary character. This proved to be a favorite for even the older listeners. Clarence the Camel: As a "Ship of the Desert," Clarence's story not only teaches about the world of camels, Robin also learns the valuable lesson about humility and starting over when you were "just not good enough." Clarence helps Robin understand that others will treat you as you treat them and how dignity without boasting will provide wonderful encounters beyond your expectations. Taffy the Rabbit: Taffy is a real "sporting" rabbit. Dressed in a red rugby suit, Taffy teaches about Wales and the countries pride in the national sport of rugby. Although Taffy's story is about the team having a carrot sale, Robin learns a valuable lesson about pulling his scout group into a sale as a way to get new camping gear for their summer camp out. Finding a solution once disappointment is conquered can bring about a treasure of shared moments. Gavin the Gorilla and Snuffles: At the bottom of a box, Robin discovers a black furry gorilla. Gavin appears to be so scary that every one avoided him. That is until a "fragile" little dog is in need of help. When you just don't fit in, an unexpected friendship can bring about so many adventures, including a friend who will stand up for you when others are being bullies. Leon the Lion: With a big bushy mane, Leon begins his story about a timid sort of lion. You see Leon would rather write stories or poems, he doesn't like being bossy or telling others what to do. Robin learns that having a gentle personality is quite often the much needed "talent" in so many situations. Just like Leon, Robin discovers that our talents are the best strengths for any situation, we just need to learn how and when to put them to use. Inviting others to join in activities that match their talents can bring about a treasured friendship for so many. Geraldo the Giraffe: Geraldo is a "Gourmet Giraffe." He loves eating! Yet, with all the new recipes he also becomes quite sick. Learning how to eat healthy foods and the importance of exercising, Geraldo inspires Robin to help a classmate who might need a friend as a "health coach." It is always so rewarding when a new friend is willing to support you as you make a change for the better. Roger the Reindeer: Roger is from Lapland, he is having serious trouble in reindeer school. In fact, he is considered lazy and unwilling to learn. In truth, Roger just doesn't understand reading or writing (a story close to my heart). Roger's inability to read directions creates such sadness, embarrassing moments, and loneliness. Yet, once Roger accepts help at a local library his life begins opening up new pathways of opportunities (can you guess where he might be heading?). Robin knows of a student in his class that is from Italy who just might have something in common with Roger. Not every tale is meant for Robin. Many of the tales bring a glimmer of hope, friendship, and love to others who Robin and Grandad meet. Every tale will plant a character building opportunity for those who are listening. Take a moment to snuggle up with a young heart and get ready for a teachable moment, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

Ultimate Guide to the Daniel Fast
by
Kristen Feola
kim_shealy
, February 22, 2015
Why this choice? Well, look at the enticing foods portrayed on the cover. Yum! There are so many differing ways to fast. A fast takes a commitment to eliminate your every day cravings and begin a 21 day journey with scripture, refreshing your body with water, and creating meals with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts/seeds, and oils. Drawing closer to God through fasting is an offering in which you are asking our Lord for a closer relationship with Him. In the first chapter of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieges Jerusalem and brings a group of young Israelite men to his palace to serve as slaves. Given the change in foods prepared at the palace, Daniel requests that they are allowed to eat as is their custom. With that request, Daniel puts forth a test to see if he and the other young Israelite aren't healthier than the King's men. The Biblical perspective (pgs. 13-22) provides the reader with a centering-focus within your mind. A balance for your heart and spirit in which your mind can freely accept the challenges with a cleansing fast. Preparing yourself spiritually is the first step. Kristen's outline has been lovingly detailed. She provides you with the essential physical and spiritual "tools" in order for your fasting success (pgs. 23-29). She provides daily scripture with her personal journey of encouragement, hope, what works, food for thought, and strength to see the fast through to completion (pgs. 33-59). For me these pages are the "meat and potatoes" for my fasting experience. I was encouraged and inspired by her convictions, her insights, and her devotion to helping me in this spiritual journey. Weekly suggested meal plans (pgs. 63-67) allows you to think through your meal choices with ease and determination... the formatting is simply designed, yet masterfully crafted as if you had a personal trainer at home every step of the way. Recipes are separated within the following meal categories: Breakfast Dishes: (pgs. 70-70-80) breakfast bars, oatmeal, cereal, muffins, smoothies, and fruit salads. First choice is the Nutty Fruit Cereal on pg. 77, quick, easy to prepare, and so refreshing before I dash off to work. Appetizers and Snacks: (pgs. 82-101) dips, roasted nuts, muffins, flatbreads, cookies, salsa, chips, and trail mix. First choice is the salsa on page 96, zesty goodness as a munchies break between meals with either flatbread, chips, or veggies... excellent energy restorer. Salads and Salad Dressings: (pgs. 102-116) fruits, nuts, veggies, legumes, herbs and oils. First choice is the Mega Greek Salad on page 106, so quick and easy (I wasn't sure I could do this one without the Feta, but it is so good). Second choice is the Spinach Salad on page 110, another quick salad with a zesty Italian dressing is perfect for weekend lunches and leftovers for Monday. Soups: (pgs. 118-135) vegetables, spices, and vegetable broth. First choice is my favored Black Bean Minestrone on page 119, and switching out the chicken broth for the vegetable broth made no difference in taste, choosing the Flatbread recipe on page 88 completed the meal. Second choice (not yet tried) is the Butternut Squash and Sweet Potato Soup on page 121. Vegetables: (pgs. 137-158) vegetables, sauces, nuts, chips, casseroles, roasted or baked. First choice is the Yukon Vegetable Bake page 158, potatoes, corn, onion, zucchini, basil, and garlic... yum! Main Dishes: (pgs. 160-188) chili, pizza, rice, stuffed peppers, beans, nuts, wraps, casseroles, and tortillas. First choice the Wild Rice Casserole on page 187, so simple with comforting goodness (I was concerned that I would not like this without cheese but it is a meal that satisfies without compromising what a true "comfy" food meal is all about. Juices: (pgs. 190-192) vegetable, fruit, blended and chilled. First choice had to be the Hello Sunshine Orange Juice on page 190, seriously a blended cup of refreshing joy (oranges, apples, and seedless grapes)... chilled and frothy. Many of the recipes include Recipe Notes (substitutes, added ingredients, and an additional recipe combo). There are selection and preparation, and storing notes that add to the "friendliness" and convenience of this cook book. I originally thought my daughter would love this book, unfortunately I have fallen "head over heals" with it, so... Let my fasting begin, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

The Soup Club Cookbook: Feed Your Friends, Feed Your Family, Feed Yourself
by
Allison, Courtney and Carr, Tina and Laskow, Caroline
kim_shealy
, February 08, 2015
Everything to get started is carefully outlined. These women have come up with such a unique option for everyone whose schedule is "unbelievably" busy. Who wouldn't want three nights off with a great meal for their family? I appreciated their "voices" as they told you about their choices. It was refreshing to be "included" in their thoughts as they outline the making of their soups throughout the seasons. "What we do is simple. We take turns cooking big posts of soup, enough to feed our four families. We drop off the soup, along with sides and garnishes, at the homes of our three other club members. This happens once a week, which means we cook our big pot of soup once a month." With few rules, it seems that a commitment to cooking at home on a schedule leads to the joy of sharing with others. Of course we are all cooking on a schedule... we are all committed to providing "yummy" meals for our families. What we rarely do is share those meals beyond our tables. I adore this idea. I will be sharing this idea with my daughters and a few neighbors with the hope that I can experience, at least for one month, the joy of discovering "what's for dinner" in someone's kitchen. Even if I can't get three others willing to try a soup month with me, I like the idea that I could share eight quarts of my favorite soup with my book club at least once a year. Just a few hi-lights to "tantalize" your taste buds: Discover the ease of creating your own soup broths (pgs. 30-31) Try the Roasted Boccoli soup, there is an undiscovered sweetness in the flavoring (pg. 80) What about a Potato Cheddar soup, yummy comfort on a chilly day (pg. 81) No one will turn down the Sun-Dried Tomato soup, maybe it's the grilled cheese croutons that inspired this "yum" (pg.98) Chilled soups for the hotter months (pgs.119-120) Don't forget the Jewish Chicken Noodle soup, complete with Matzo ball goodness (pg. 135) Perfected Italian Wedding soup to warm everyone's heart (pg. 147) Beyond the soups... think salads with endless possibilities (pgs. 152-162) Choosing and using the freshest of vegetables in the soups or as a side (pgs. 165-177) Consideration of which bread, grain, or pasta for the meals touch of perfection (pgs. 179-199) Big food favorites are dishes meant for get-together meals (pgs.201-217) The organization for each recipe is brilliant, easy to follow, with added inspirations or "trial & error" perspectives. No detail is left out of their first year of discoveries (some are even humorous). Each recipe has notations for delivery, for serving, and for what they have done to make it a better soup and/or experience. You will also discover how to add different types of toppings (pgs. 43-51), how to stock your pantry (pgs. 21-25), expert Firefighter tips about cooking in quantity (pg. 143), and of course... never forget the cook's snacks (pgs. 225-235). Don't forget the best part of preparing the soup... might just be the choice of the music, MrsK mrskbookstogo.blogspot

The Case of the Cursed Dodo
by
Jake G. Panda
kim_shealy
, February 07, 2015
As the case begins, Jake is in his "caged" office in the deep Moroccan forest: "How'd I get in this jam? It has somethin' to do with a lost suitcase, a green bird, and a bunch of double-crossing animals." It all began in a "little joint" called the Last Resort where Jake works as the hotel "snoop" (the go-to guy, you know the detective that protects the occupants and anything valuable). "Protection" is his business and everyone knows to go to his office, Room 618. On this day, Jake receives a postcard from the Professor who is always "hopping the globe," in search of any type of endangered artifacts. Little does Jake know that within minutes he would be getting an anxious phone call from the Professor. It seems that the Professor is in trouble, he located a mysterious suitcase in the Moroccan desert and it appears that he was being followed. I must warn you that thinking you are being followed and being nabbed in mid-sentence are not the same situations. What else could Jake do... he had to find the Professor which would all begin once he finds his way to the Critter Bazaar. Will he be able to find any type of a lead about the Professor? What could be so valuable about an old suitcase? With a "free-falling" entrance, Jake enters the Midnight Oasis (a real sleazy joint). Unfortunately for Jake, the sleazy... no good... bad to the spine (more like slime) bad guys are everywhere. Once they know he is looking for the suitcase and the Professor, all sorts of mayhem is set into motion, including being poached as an endangered species (worth big bucks to those who are not so nice). After an escape with the Professor, Jake finds himself in an underground tunnel with Nina the jackrabbit who has all the right moves. Her connections will get them back to the Last Resort. Would you have thought that a jackrabbit in camo could best everyone? Of course being connected with the Endangered Underground has its perks. Whether its the twists and turns in a Moroccan bazaar, or it could have been the disastrous train attack, and then again it might have been all the "shady" doings within the hotel (a huge revelation for our hotel detective)... regardless, you will be on the "brink" of laughter with every "sleuthing" detail. There is no character "un-described" that will not have you convinced that this detective is the real-deal... a true to the mold "gumshoe." Are you wondering about the Dodo in the title? Sorry, I do not disclose any of the details that would keep you from opening this mystery... besides, you wouldn't believe me... As the reader, you are going to enjoy this journey... have fun! Two Renegade Realms
by
Donita K. Paul
kim_shealy
, January 31, 2015
It is always a thrill to review a book for an author that you admire. The settings are invitations requiring you to step within and experience the story as it unfolds. The characters become your friends, your conspirators, and your foes. The faceted wisdom is woven as layers awaiting your discernment. The creatures are trustworthy shadows of your childhood imagination. "In the middle of this ordinary stone room, his mor dragon sat on a colorful, cushy chair, conveniently provided by his own shape-shifted wings and tail." In this second novel, the quest in freeing Chomountain will require the wisdom of the ages, strength in seeing beyond what is in front of you, a desire to restore that which is of value, and determination to keep strong during the battle. Once you open the cover, you are within the "aged" library where all things are kept including those that would do you harm. "The last two years have been spent re-establishing the Realm Walker's Guild... But the diminishing number of realm walkers is a worry in all the realms." Traveling through the caverns appears safe unless choices become lost within the maze. Crossing the lake and releasing Chomountain will provide assistance for the Realm walkers. Yet, the myth of the Toombalians could be an altered reality cloaked with a disillusioned entrapment. An aspect that would cost them valuable time. "As they approached, the fisherman pulled in his line and waded ashore to meet them. Of a wiry and slim build, the man was old, with short-cropped white hair and a long white beard. Suntanned and spry, he wore blue pants tucked into rubber waders and a plain green shirt... His belt was of fine leather tooled with a fancy design... Welcome to Bright Valley." Who is Old Trout? Will he be the one who could lead them to Chomountain? Old Trout makes everything he needs. Could you imagine using all of your knowledge to make your own clothing and shoes? Would you know how to make furniture or "oiled paper" windows? What about a garden or a smoke house or even a "drying shed?" Cantor thinks they have been led astray, Bixby and Dukmee aren't sure. What if Old Trout has some type of a connection with Chomountain? "He can't be Chomountain if he doesn't read. How can the right hand of Primen not read? He'd read and read in every language there is, wouldn't he?" Whether they find Chomountain or not, they must stop the Lymen invasion. What ever Errd Tos plans for these Realm walkers, they must keep trying, they must endure with optimistic determination. What will be their turning point? Could it be a mechanical portal? Could it be a "talent" in which a quill and paper could point them in the right direction (this was my favorite part)? How will the Whirl of Knowledge and a "maelstrom of learning" be used for the good in their quest? Or will Errd Tos use it for evil? One truth remains to be discovered: "Oh, Primen, I'm making a mess of this. I'm taking on more than I need to, aren't I? You've provided all these companions with different talents for different purposes. And I'm trying to take all the responsibility... Do I just barge in and take charge... You always listen to me, don't you?" Given their talents, some mysterious hampers, the wisdom of Primen, and trustworthy friendships, these Realm walkers will see their quest through to completion. For they shall "put on their shoes and go with it." Enjoy this journey... MrsK mrskbookstogo blog

Mutation
by
Roland Smith
kim_shealy
, January 30, 2015
Have you ever been excited about the newest book in a series? Have you known that as soon as you got the book in your hands all other aspects of life would be put on hold until the final punctuation ended your journey? Well that is exactly what so many of Roland Smith's fans are anticipating... So what is all the "buzz" about Mutation? Well it might have something to do with a Gizmo and a dragonspy, but that would only be about the type of "tech" gadgets that is causing a fuss with in the jungles of Brazil. It could be the sounds of the characters on the zip lines up in the canopy, but then again there probably wouldn't be much noise down below... even if one of the characters gets a bit "carried" away and slams into a tree. Then again, it could be the high-tech motor of the "Rivlan," but with its ability to move up the Amazon with out any detection... it probably isn't that either. It just might be that every character arrives at Dr. Lanza's Jaguar Preserve, including the hatch-lings (there is nothing better than having your favorite character back in action with the Cryptid crew). Maybe the buzz is connected to the fact that Marty and Grace are safe (for the moment) and you are anxiously waiting for Noah Blackwood to reach the end of his tyranny. There could even be a need for closure... the truth about what happened to Marty's parents. Or it might just... be... that you are so involved in this series... that your adrenaline is pumping and you are ready to "survive" this final destination regardless of who is detained, captured, killed, or left forever missing. After all, there are those amazing "cryptid" creatures that every reader hopes will one day be seen "alive." Maybe it's just because you are a reader who is addicted to "on the edge" adventures, with characters in "survival" modes, and page-turning hooks. What ever the reason for opening this book, be ready for an all night journey. Once read, you will be the one sharing the "buzz" about this book. Oh, and teachers be forewarned that your students will not be able to sustain their focus until they have turned the last page of this book. If you want your students to be "engaged" readers, then be ready to lengthen their "free choice" reading time. Or better yet, why not introduce the series... pass out the first three books... take a seat yourself and begin reading Mutation. The "buzz" will be in all of their discussions, predictions, and desire to be the first one ready to read your copy of Mutation. Way to "put your pen" to the paper Roland, you never leave your readers wanting less... but always wanting more! MrsK

What really is beneath? This cover draws you in and down... down below the streets of New York City. Seriously, who wouldn't creep over to the light and peer down... down... down! Before I share with you about Pat, let me share of few "things" about his brother Coop. For some reason, Coop really likes a pair of tap shoes. Now I get this, once those taps start resonating on differing surfaces you can't help but to keep your feet in action. Coop also likes reading, maybe not the same type of books I would choose... but a reader is an explorer. Someone who is willing to look "deeper" beyond the words or whatever society is trying to enforce. Coop is also a writer who has lost the opportunity to communicate in a journal. So, the next best option would be keeping an auditory journal (definitely a real-time... over the edge... survival and in the moment tech-nique). Coop likes digging, dirt, and tuna sandwiches. Nothing unusual... except, well he's going "beneath." Now for Pat (such an amazingly brave character), his story begins after the explosion... after Coop has run away... and once a package arrives at his school. Coop has "hooked" him into keeping a journal as a way of documenting the truth: "This is what I'm doing here in this journal...stringing together bits and pieces of information to make a story, each bead in the necklace made from different material. Memory beads. Recorded beads. Newspaper beads. Letter beads..." Once Coop began digging behind their shed, Pat was recruited as a co-conspirator. This was not just a "hole" for discovery, it was well planned... eight months of tunneling "slithering beneath the neighborhood like a giant earthworm." Unfortunately, the tunnel ended up at the Mesa's swimming pool and the "whumpf" of the explosion brought "every local, state, and federal law enforcement agent" to their back yard shed. Three days later, Pat awakens to the reality that his brother had been taken by the Feds. Even when Coop was returned, things were not the same. And then came the day that Coop was gone. No note... no tap shoes... no tent... no sleeping bag... backpack...or flashlights... all gone... completely gone. Only some stationery and envelopes were left behind. Gone where? Where and why would Coop leave? It takes a year of worry, anger, and change... but on the day the package is delivered at Pat's school , he begins a recorded communication with Coop. Consider it like letters or a voice-journal of every day happenings. Until Coop gets to New York: " When I finally got here I knew I was in the right place. What I'm looking for is here. I don't know how to explain it, but I can feel it...it's close." When there is no recordings, no letters... Pat decides to tell both of his parents that something has happened to Coop. The only thing they are concerned about is where Pat will spend Christmas break. Now that they have divorced and have new interests, neither are thrilled that the other one has plans. So Pat decides his own destination... New York City... in search of Coop. He has ten nights to find him. So what is Coop looking for? Who is this old guy who knows everything about NYC? Who is the girl and why is she wearing shades at night? What does Coop mean that he has earned his "entrance fee?" Who is the guide? Who is that strange man opening Coop's mail box? With so many unknowns, a plot that takes you "underground," claustrophobic tunnels, and "deeply-rooted" communities... Pat must find a way to help Coop before it's too late. It takes courage to even be in the tunnels, can you imagine being underground with no plan, no map, nothing that gives you a moment of peace or sleep? Could you trust strangers with your next breath? Would you be so driven to find your sibling that only true grit would bring you a few miles closer to the truth? "I put the earphones in and fast-forwarded to Coop's references to what lies below..." Pat's journey is not an adventure, it's a harrowing experience that only leads to more questions, suffocating decisions, constant agony pulsing through your veins... and certain death. This novel will keep you turning the pages and only stopping to gulp in a breath, grab a bite to eat, and return with a ferocity to reach Coop for yourself (yep, that type of reader enmeshment is delightfully delivered). Every character has their own story, each decision is pre-determined to take Pat deeper underground, and every life-threatening chase is smothered by miles of dirt overhead. Or at least it appears that no one is noticing where Pat is... My only question to the author of a "stand alone" novel would be: Are these characters seriously not beckoning to you to finish their journey? This is a must reserve read... don't wait... get Roland's newest book for your New Year kick off. It is beyond expectations. It is a winter's journey not to be forgotten. It will... well, it will make you re-live Pat's moments "beneath" civilization (a true read-it-forward novel). MrsK
