I saw the trailers for the TV show "You" that's coming out this September, then decided to read it once I heard it was a book. It was definitely creepy--especially as a woman in her 20s who lives in NYC and frequents bookstores (just like the woman the narrator stalks). It also felt like nothing the victim could have done would have changed the narrator's course; once he had her in his sights, that was it. In some ways it reminded me of one of my favorite suspense/thriller novels, "Into the Darkest Corner," by Elizabeth Haynes, but from a different perspective. It would especially be great for fans of "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

I really, really loved this book! It's been my favorite book of the year so far, and I wish I were still reading it. I loved how the entire book was from Eleanor's perspective, and since there was a lot she didn't understand about society, there were so many sentences that made me laugh out loud--her perspective on the world was really unique. I especially loved when Eleanor would compare things to the animal world/animal behavior. Eleanor dealt with some truly terrible things in her past, but I liked how frank she was about it (partly because she was in denial about a lot of it)--there was no time in the book that I felt like the author was trying to elicit any emotions from me, despite the awful things that had happened to Eleanor. It was really effective how, instead, the author let us see other people's reactions when Eleanor would reveal something.

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
by
Elizabeth Gilbert
Katya
, October 05, 2015
After being overwhelmed by spending too much time in an office and feeling like my creativity was wearing thin, this new book by Elizabeth Gilbert was what I needed for my imagination to feel reinvigorated. Gilbert helps readers infuse their lives with "creative living" and to take creative pursuits more lightly so as not to feel weighed down by a need for perfection or the classic definition of success. "No, when I refer to 'creative living,' I am speaking more broadly. I am talking about living a life that is driven more strongly by curiosity than by fear." -Elizabeth Gilbert, "Big Magic"

Eurydice

When you read most plays, you feel like you're missing something, because you are: the actors, the set, the lighting, the costumes. But the reading the beautiful play "Eurydice" is a moving experience all on its own. It's a vivid, heartbreaking and poetic version of the myth of Orpheus told through the point of view of the heroine, Eurydice.

The Burning

I loved this and I'm so, so excited that there are 4 more in the series, plus a couple of other books by the same author! I had this on my to-read list for ages after seeing it in a bookstore but I didn't actually buy the book until recently. I actually think the back cover makes it seem less interesting than it really is. I can't believe I didn't read this until now! As with a couple other mystery/suspense novels I've read that were written by women and have a female detective, I thought it was interesting that sexism in the workplace factored into the story (it didn't overpower other aspects, but it was something that was infused into Maeve Kerrigan's daily experiences, like it is for many women). While I could predict some things, that didn't bother me, because I think the suspense was just as big a part of the story as the crime solving. And I loved that there was a love interest for Maeve in the story but that it wasn't the focus of the book. Excited to see how that develops throughout the series. I already got a couple friends to join me in reading this series, and I'm glad they love it as much as I do! I've already started the second book ("The Reckoning") and it doesn't disappoint.

Into the Darkest Corner

I found this in the mystery section of a used bookstore. It turned out to be a suspense book more than a mystery, which I liked because it was different than anything I'd read before. It became creepier and creepier as the story unfolded--you wonder at the beginning how anything can be all that dangerous, and by the end it doesn't seem like there's a way out. I'll definitely pick up another book by this author!
