Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Blues In The Night by Rochelle Krich
    cajunbliss, March 01, 2012
Intriguing and remarkable mystery, Molly Blume is her own girl friday as freelance crime writer/reporter in LA. Witty with jewish characters and overtones will she be able to save the day or lose her life as she gets close to the truth? A great diversion, I adore the Molly Blume series and this first book is a treasure!

If you enjoy the works of Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker or Toni Morrison run and pick up a a copy of this book of poetry by Jean Toomer. Her stunning and strong voice is pleasure to read. Articulate and powerful her poems resonate with the experiences of a strong African American woman's emotional journey through a turblent world. An inspiring book.

Enlightened Heart An Anthology Of Sacred Poetry by Stephen Mitchell
    cajunbliss, March 01, 2012
In today's hectic world this book is both calming and serene. Soothing, peaceful and dreamy the poems and excerpts are a lovely escape and sweet to read to someone one you love. I originally picked this up as part of college course on introspection and openminded thought.

If Chins Could Kill Confessions of A B Movie Actor by Campbell, Bruce
    cajunbliss, March 01, 2012
My husband would read excerpts out of this book and crack me up all the time. Mischievous and delightful, the story of one the most enigmatic of actors Bruce Campbell is absolutely appealing. Pick it up today!

Fairytale Retellings 01 Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce
    cajunbliss, March 01, 2012
Imagine Red Riding Hood combined with Buffy the vampire slayer and you get a novel like this one. Its about 2 sisters fighting werewolves, trying to find their way in a dark dangerous world; will they heal from the scars of their past, will they find love and acceptance together or will the battle between good and evil drive them apart? A remarkable book worth your time.

Wee Free Men The Beginning by Terry Pratchett
    cajunbliss, March 01, 2012
An enchanting novel for both adults and children, this is a must for any library. When Tiffany's sticky younger brother disappears its up to her to save him as no one else can, she must fill her grandmother's boots as the recently deceased matriarch of this sleepy farming village. Can Tiffany survive a trip to fairy land with only her trusty iron skillet and a band of little blue men who scuffle with everything and everyone? Has a life of making cheese and tickling carp prepared her for this adventure? An awesome book!

Biting The Sun by Tanith Lee
    cajunbliss, March 01, 2012
Imagine a society with no threat of death, where you could be either male or female and look anyway you wanted. What would morality be like, or family or love? Would any of it seem real? A luminous look at humanity without consequences, as technology transforms to meet our every need does it destroy what it is to be human? A dazzling book by one of sci-fi’s greatest women writers Tanith Lee and one of my favorites.

Final Exits The Illustrated Encyclopedia of How We Die by Largo, Michael
    cajunbliss, March 01, 2012
Vignettes on the unusual ways people have expired; sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, but always a very interesting look at the fragility of the human life. Did you know excess MSG in Chinese cuisine can kill you? Or that you should never have a tooth pick in your mouth while driving? Similar to the Darwin awards or the TV show myth busters, this book is entertaining and an out of the ordinary read.

Best Of James Herriot Favorite Stories by James Herriot
    cajunbliss, February 29, 2012
A delightful mix of stories, not only do you have a perspective of England during World War II, and a young man's search for love, but also his interactions as a newly trained country vet in a world of old school farming. The rendition of his own foibles along with the personalities of his patients make this book a winner. Charming and tender I can't recommend this it enough.

Unthinkable Who Survives When Disaster Strikes & Why by Amanda Ripley
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
Brillant look at historical disasters and who survives them, how people band together to get through them, and how they change not only the people there at the time of the event but generations to come. Not recommended for plane trips because of the discussion of the event 911. But good for survival tips and understanding how the human body and mind respond to the extreme conditions of a disaster.

    Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
A great mystery both suspenseful and satisfying. Similar to Agatha Christie but with a deeper psychological aspect that leaves you wondering who really is Rebecca a seductress or a woman in the wrong place at the wrong time?

13 Bullets: A Vampire Tale by David Wellington

These vampires don't sparkle, they aren't romantic or misunderstood or sweet. Somewhere between the great white shark and zombies this horror novel is brutal journey in a quest for surival. Terrific and terrifying at the same time.

Tales of the Fish Patrol by Jack London
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
If the hardy boys were back in the early 1900's trying to survive the treacherous San Francisco bay waters while stoping local fisherman from poaching through use of illegal nets and risking their lives their story would be a lot like this collection by Jack London. Entertaining and often overlooked.

World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
I loved this book. It's one of the most realistic and frightening novels of zombie apocalypse imaginable. It looks at how America and the government would be changed if a zombie outbreak occured today. Who would survive and who most likly wouldn't. A scary good read!

Genius & Heroin The Illustrated Catalogue of Creativity Obsession & Reckless Abandon Through the Ages by Michael Largo
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
A fascinating compendum of the lives of genius and famous people and their struggles with addiction often ending in tragedy. Are genius and madness on different sides of the same coin? Why do some of the brightest stars burn out so quickly? As always Michael Largo's books show us that truth is stranger then fiction. A must in any library.

Trespass A History of Uncommissioned Urban Art by Carlo Mccormick
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
I loved this book. Graffiti art is considered subversive and as it isn't legal it isn't usually up long enough for everyone to enjoy it. A lot of the works here make policitcal and social statements about the times we live in. Revolutionary work by artists questioning society and their place in it.

Awful novel, like a shotgun stuffed with placenta, scattered, messy, and repugnant. The characters are flawed, the plot is haphazard, can't believe they even published it.

Undead & Unwed by Maryjanice Davidson
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
A vampire novel with a sense of humor. Can vampires be obsessed with shoes, keep their day job and their humanity? Betsy the queen of the vampires can, dragging the undead kicking and screaming into this century, think the tv show friends meets vampires. If you are looking for levity this series doesn't suck...in a bad way.

    Chuckling Whatsit by Richard Sala
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
Like a black and white 1940's noir Richard Sala books are gritty myserious filled with femme fatales, murders and plot twists. You don't have to wait for a dark and stormy night to pick up one of these books, they are atmospheric all on their own. Similar to Edward Gorey.

Herland, the Yellow Wall-Paper, and Selected Writings by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
The yellow wall-paper is one of the best short stories I have ever read. It looks at a woman being overwhelmed by the confines and restrictions of her marriage and her place in society, creepy and shocking with feministic overtones.

Serial Killer Whisperer How One Mans Tragedy Helped Unlock the Deadliest Secrets of the Worlds Most Terrifying Killer by Pete Earley

Very graphic in nature but a good look into the human psyche and the brain. A hard book to read because of the subject matter, it doesn't pull any punches but may help to give a better understanding of why some people commit murder.

Fondues from Around the World Nearly 200 Recipes for Fish Cheese & Meat Fondues Oriental Hot Pots Tempura Sukiyaki Dessert Fondues by Eva Klever
    cajunbliss, February 28, 2012
Good variety of recipes, not all of them are authentic but its a cheaper fondue cookbook that will give you a ton of ideas of how to use your fondue pot more frequently and in new and interesting ways. Gave it along with an actual fondue pot as a wedding gift, the cookbook was an extra touch the couple really enjoyed. Also has some color photos in the middle of the cookbook. Nice.

Hamish has a new police officer roommate who appears to be even lazier then he is, and past loves and possible new ones appear as well. I'd have liked it better if the overall story line progressed a bit more, but still the same old charming Hamish.
