Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Little Dorrit
by
Charles Dickens

At 860 pages “Little Dorrit” is epic in scope, yet Dickens’ mastery of detail and conveying the human condition make this an easy read. The changing circumstances of Amy Dorrit, Arthur Clenham and the myriad of characters with names like Flintwinch and Barnacle in 19th Century England (with travels to France and Italy) echo our current world economy. Imprisonment, of the physical body as well as the mind and heart, is a main theme, but I found the generosity of spirit and tenderness between the main characters most engaging. Will definitely read this book again.

Magicians Book 1
by
Lev Grossman

, January 01, 2012
A fascinating, dark coming of age story set in the modern world and the magical. Owes much to C.S. Lewis and Narnia, but though the major plot line is a teenager discovering a school for magic, the main character has more in common with Holden Caulfield than Harry Potter. Can't wait to read the sequel, "The Magician King."
