Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Crossing the Horizon

This historical novel is well worth the read. It's based on the true story about three wonderful, fearless women whose stories have, for the most part, been lost in history behind other famous aviators like Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. But Elsie Mackay, Mabel Boll, and Ruth Elder deserve to have their stories told - and Notaro does it brilliantly. You can tell she really cares about these women and their stories. The author obviously did a lot of research, and includes fantastic historical photos to help illustrate the journey. If you love history, read this book. If you're a fan of aviation, read this book. If you believe girls run the world, read this book. Basically: read this book. Crossing the Horizon is a departure from Notaro's usual (and hilariously self-deprecating) Idiot Girls books. I hope she does more writing like this. And bonus! She's an Oregon author.

Station Eleven
by
Emily St. John Mandel

Emily St. John Mandel's "Station Eleven" really grabbed me. Excellent character development, interesting writing style, and a unique plot made it hard to put down. In a time where there are many "post-apocalyptic" novels out there, this one achieves a solid story that moves through time using surprising heroines/heroes. The story felt real and terrifying at the same time, with just the right amount of hope. I really loved a little "Station Eleven" surprise that appeared when I turned a page toward the end.
