Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century
by
Jessica Bruder

Please read this book! Jessica is a wonderfully adept storyteller and your guide into the world of these nomadic retirees that have taken a partially voluntary leap of faith in leaving their brick and mortar homes behind in search of freedom from debt and a life raft to survive the flood of expenses left behind the recession of 2008. The stories feel so intimately real and the concept of living on the road and becoming transient is thought-provoking. Even if you dont think you're curious about this lifestyle this book will change your mind. With well-researched forays into what has led to this revolution and descriptions of a blue-collar America crumbling under the weight of a shrinking middle class Jessica manages to change your way of thinking about your place in the world and what it means to find freedom and a place to call home. A worthwhile read for sure.

My Absolute Darling A Novel
by

I originally picked up this book because I've loved the Mendocino coast my whole life and because the author went to Willamette but the story inside was so much more than I hoped for. The characters are complicated and profoundly interesting and flawed and the descriptions are beautifully elegant. I think this particular work shines in its development of emotional motives of characters and its ability to subtly suggest the inner workings and thoughts of each character without being too heavy-handed. The story itself is heart-wrenching and intimate in a way that makes you feel as if you too live in a small dilapidated house on the northern california coast with a world you must escape but cant ever get far enough away from. If you're looking for an emotional journey and peek into the complex burdens of human nature this is the perfect book. Very much worth the read!
