Enchanting, unusual, feminist fairy tale, magical realism, just a few of the terms i associate with this book. The world is not unlike our own but the curls of magic throughout really make it something else. At it's core it's about a woman from a dysfunctional family who marries into an even more dysfunctional family but it's really so much more than that.

I love the interplay of everyone's stories, and of course the great descriptions of the food. The way the author describes food is visceral and sensual. It makes me want to jump into my kitchen while also tying me to the characters and their journey.

I love this book of short stories, every one of them is twisted and interesting. I have re-read the stories off and on for years, it is a book i constantly go back to. The stories are varied but all a little twisted, ex: a woman who dates death, a future where cannibalism is the social norm, rats try to market themselves as the best pet, etc. All strange but all fascinating.
