An amazing debut novel, that I can't really say too much about without spoilers... perhaps the best debug since Arkansas by John Brandon. All I can say is when you finish the book, you'll spend more time thinking about what just happened than any other book this year.

David Mitchell, one of the great young(ish, these days) authors of the 21st century, manages to create a story that exists in around 10 voices, over 400 years, but all interweaves into a fantastic story that involves cannibals, the state of newspapers, music history, murder, and more, and pulls it all off seemingly effortlessly. Amazing.

Moment in the Sun

John Sayles

An amazing, sprawling, historical novel by John Sayles, with writing that pays home to Twain, Finley Peter Dunne, and many others. Funny and moving at the same time. Taking place at the turn of the 20th century, it covers a lot of history that most of us were never taught in school - the reality of Jim Crow, the Spanish American and Philippines wars, the assassination of McKinley, and much more. The size of 4 other books, but the value of at least 6 and a half. A great American novel.
