Broyard is an insightful yet pragmatic writer. The book is an interesting read and full of anecdotes and a bit of gossip about coming of age in Greenwich Village in the '40's.

Pale King

This is an important book, warts and all. It has a subtle and profound intelligence and requires an attention and patience from the reader that I've not experienced since reading James Joyce's Ulysses. The Pale King may be a Ulysses for our moment in time.

Mistress of Modernism The Life of Peggy Guggenheim
by

This is my favourite book of 2010. It is well written and well researched and tells the story of the sometimes dysfunctional but always dynamic and well-intentioned Peggy Guggenheim. The book makes me miss her as if I'd actually known her.
