Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

My Absolute Darling A Novel

Here are a story and characters that linger in your mind after you finish the last page. I have had a mild obsession with the area of Northern California where the story is set and felt like I was really there through the atmospheric and deliberate descriptions. Turtle is a girl who defines what it is to be a survivor. The writing is so clear. Even when what is being written about is horrific and brutal, the author keeps you pulled in, rooting for this brave, brave girl.

Legend of Rock Paper Scissors

I really wanted to really like this book. The "Crayon" books by Drew Daywalt are very clever and funny, and I was hoping for the same here. I think this book is good, not great, but according to my students (who are the ones who really matter here), it's GREAT! They love it, so how can I argue with that? This explanation of how Rock, Paper and Scissors get together and why they created the game is silly and entertaining for all. Daywalt has a wonderful voice and knows how to make people laugh at the most everyday things. Read this to someone you love. Or, have them read it to you!

Crossing the Horizon

With all due respect to JennyK, I couldn't even finish this book! I appreciated the author's research and the subject matter sounded very interesting to me, but the writing style and contrived-feeling dialogue just really turned me off. I don't think Ms. Notaro did right by her real life heroines, and was very disappointed overall.

This whole series of books is fantastic. I am a librarian at a K-8 school. A parent donated a couple of titles from this series and next thing I knew, I literally could not keep these on the shelf! I have ordered as many different titles as I can. The students get so excited when their name comes up on the waiting list and they get a turn to read. Any non-fiction titles that get kids that stoked to read is a definite "5" in my book (haha librarian humor).
