Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Jacob’s New Dress is about a boy learning to express himself outside the strict interpretation of gender norms. The story is earnest and does not shy away from the potential of bullying, and it ultimately teaches kids (and their parents) how valuable and important it is to be your authentic self. This book made my eyes water, and I highly recommend it.

Just Like a Caucasian

This was a fantastic book! Just Like A Caucasian is the story of four immigrant teenagers, each with their own unique and important perspective - sort of a modern Breakfast Club, but more politically aware. Every chapter is from the perspective of a different character as their lives intertwine. This book challenges its readers to question their own privilege and consider where other people are coming from. Now more than ever, we need to learn more about how we are all connected and how differing backgrounds help shape who we are. This was a quick read, and I highly recommend it!
