Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Smack

If you like gritty west coast settings, people down on their luck, con artists who tug at your heart, add this book to your reading list. Lange is an accomplished writer who moves the story along without a muddled road map. There is an edgy flow to the story that will keep you wondering until the last page. And once the book ends you'll be compelled to seek out other books by the author. He's that good.

Dying A Memoir
by
Cory Taylor
Paul
, September 28, 2017
Rather than focus her book on the effects of the cancer that is deteriorating her body, the author rather reflects on her life as well as her death. She contemplates just what death means, that "for so many of us, death has become the unmentionable thing, a monstrous silence." Poignant and deeply engaging, here is a book that can be read in one sitting but one whose content may linger with you every day for the rest of your life.
