Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Association of Small Bombs

Karan Mahajan

This novel deserves every bit of praise that its received. I came away from it feeling like I had a better understanding of so much of what's broken in our world. You see the way that one terrorist attack creates these loops of destruction, and those loops create loops, and each successive generation finds it more and more impossible to slip free unaffected. Mahajan is a wonderful stylist, too - as tough as the material is, the prose just sings.

Youll Enjoy it When You Get There the Selected Stories of Elizabeth Taylor
by
Elizabeth Taylor, Margaret Drabble
Lucky Reader
, October 18, 2017
It's a lucky reader that gets their hands on the Selected Stories of Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor's writing is elegant without ever being precious, and she's so sharp and smart and funny in her portraits of English life in the fifties and sixties, especially as it was lived by women. Moreover, while her well-known story "The Flypaper" is a bit of an outlier from the rest of her work, it's one of the more disturbing pieces of fiction you'll ever read. It's right up there with Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." No surprise that she could extend herself in an entirely different direction, though - Taylor was a boundless talent.
