Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Volcano: an A to Z and Other Essays about Geology, Geography, and Geo-Travel in the American West
by
Neil Mathison
Elana
, December 24, 2017
Mathison’s essays speak to the beauty, terror, ruggedness and magic of nature alongside the personal and family stories of life, loss, remembering and forgetting. His essays are powerful, vivid with a lush and lyrical description of place: geography, geology, landscapes, oceans, mountains, interwoven with history, literature and philosophy. Here’s one of his many gorgeous quotes: “Deep time is daunting. You see a long way into it but never to its bottom.”

What My Last Man Did
by
Andrea Lewis and Priscilla Long and Rebecca Brown
Elana
, November 06, 2017
Lush language, dialogue, and description of place enfold us into a world of common humanity, each character alive on the page his/her strengths and weaknesses visible. These characters are us—their struggles, joys, fears, concerns, humor, honesty and dishonesty—all. Reminiscent of The Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, this is a novel of interconnecting stories that rely on and influence each other. Hard to put down. When you finish, don’t worry, these characters will not leave you alone. They will continue to live on inside you.
