by
Jon Land
Chick Lit Cafe
, August 18, 2020
In Jon Land’s gripping mystery, Strong from the Heart: A Caitlin Strong Novel, the quests of a deadly drug baron, a determined outlaw, and an undeterred Texas Ranger all culminate into an exhilarating thriller. The characters in Strong from the Heart, are anything but cliché. Jon Land creates uncompromising, loyal, and complex characters, resolute on achieving their missions. When Cort Wesley identifies the place and people responsible for the unauthorized opioids prescriptions associated with his son’s overdose, he walks in and torches the clinic. The novel also pays tribute to legendary Texas Rangers who left their mark in history. Their exciting stories introduce sections of the book. As a descendant of notable Texas rangers, Caitlin’s admirable heritage is also interlaced with current events in the novel. Within its electrifying plot, Strong from the Heart discusses important topics, relevant to today’s society. It brings attention to America’s Opioids crisis revealing the tragic stories of the victims and their families. The plight of immigrants, corruption in high places, and the relentless efforts of protagonists in the continuous struggle against drug trafficking are also explored. Jon Land’s superlative writing creates entertaining dialogue, exciting action scenes, incredible characters and important themes, resulting in yet another unforgettable thriller. Strong from the Heart by Jon Land comes highly recommended by Chick Lit Café.

The Road Ahead, Volume 1
by
Hali C. Broncucia
Chick Lit Cafe
, April 06, 2018
Heather Morgan is a biological engineer working on a vaccine to treat a deadly virus. She wakes up due to a nightmare at three in the morning. Readers quickly discover that the virus has wiped out 99% of the human population. Alone, Heather must survive. She searches and scrounges for food and shelter. Her survival skills are tested. Soon she meets a young inexperienced woman named Jodi. Heather learns that there is a “rumor” that a San Francisco biotech company has created a vaccine. Together, Heather and Jodi, begin the long journey on foot from Colorado to San Francisco. Along the way they are attacked, but survive. They soon find shelter on a farm with two young men that they meet, Cam and Elliott. However, tragedy strikes and Heather’s mission is threatened. Will Heather have the strength to carry on to find the vaccine that is only rumored to exist? The Road Ahead by Hali Broncucia, is a compelling post-apocalypse story that will keep readers engaged from start to finish. Heather is a refreshing, strong female, lead character that readers will love. She is tough and capable without seeming too powerful and unrealistic. The diminishing population of infected humans that are forced to survive is engrossing and intensely intriguing. The scientific aspects are exceptionally interesting without being too intellectual; that it goes over reader’s heads. It is acutely obvious that much research was put into this novel. The survival details are particularly thought-provoking. In The Road Ahead, the characters are few, which I found to be refreshing. Their motivations, personalities and temperaments are driven home in this engaging story. They are well developed and multifaceted. They are all realistic and down-to-earth. There is a character for every reader to love. The Road Ahead is unpredictable with twists at every turn. Heather and her friends must journey a desolate, dying dark land while facing danger at every step. I loved this dystopian story. It is filled with love, loss, danger, scientific intrigue and the feat of survival in a post-apocalyptic, uninhabitable world. The emotions invoked upon the reader will not be soon forgotten. This story left me wanting more and I am hoping for a sequel or a trilogy. I totally recommend The Road Ahead to all post-apocalypse fans and to those who crave a great read by an exceptional writer, Hali Broncucia.

The Edge of Memory
by
Maura Beth Brennan
Chick Lit Cafe
, March 18, 2018
I fell in love with The Edge of Memory. It’s one of the best books, in its genre, that I have read in a long time. I literally could not put it down and my house suffered for it, as I neglected it for a couple of days and it became a mess. That’s when I know I have come across a great novel. Author, Maura Beth Brennan brings readers a compelling read filled with mystery, excitement and romance. Harriet is a fabulous young woman. She is compassionate and filled with hope as well as fears. Women readers will relate to her as she journeys toward self-acceptance, freedom from the past, guilt, fear and ultimately healing. The romance in this story is alluring and charming. The importance of friendship and loyalty is emphasized in this fabulous story. Which makes it endearing and beautiful. There is a lot going on in this compelling story. It is fast paced and unpredictable. That’s one of the things that I loved about it. I didn’t know what was going to happen next but, I highly anticipated it as I quickly turned the pages. The Edge of Memory is a psychological drama as well as a mystery, suspense and tastefully written romance story. Readers will love the plot and the twists and turns. I loved the way Maura Beth Brennan wrote the characters and their development. They are multidimensional and evolve gracefully. I found myself really caring about the main character and rooting for her with all my heart. I was very emotionally caught up in her story and journey. In The Edge of Memory, all the descriptions are written with vivid acuteness and creativity. Everything from the scenery to the people are deliciously described and a delight for the senses. The whole book is like a thought provoking painting. The Edge of Memory is Maura Beth Brennan’s debut novel and it is excellent. I’m definitely looking forward to more books written by her…. And, I love the book cover-which is always a plus. Chick lit Cafe highly recommends this compelling, beautiful and suspenseful novel by Maura Beth Brennan.

Not Exactly Love: A Memoir
by
Betty Hafner
Chick Lit Cafe
, March 12, 2018
It’s 1969, on Long Island, NY, unmarried and single French teacher, Betty, meets a handsome new science teacher named Jack. He is an edgy hippie type guy and the couple seems to have a lot in common. He is handsome and charismatic, and Betty falls hard for him. His energy and spirit attracted Betty and brought new things and ideas to her. Her life seemed to have opened up and blossomed because of Jack. But Jack also had a bad temper, which was a warning sign that Betty reluctantly ignored. It wasn’t until after they married that jack’s temper turned to rage and abuse toward Betty. Overtime the mental, emotional and physical abuse escalated to an unbearable intensity for Betty. Betty’s life became a living hell. She was forced to make difficult decisions daily. Should she stay silent, share it with others, confront Jack, report him. It was a daily struggle. A daily nightmare. How long would she take his abuse? Why does she continue to stay? Will she ever gain the courage to leave him and gain her sanity and freedom back? Will she choose to live with him and his tangents and abusive nature, or will she leave him for good? Betty Hafneranswers all things questions in her wonderful personal account and memoir, Not Exactly Love. Not Exactly Love is a poignant compelling story of one woman’s life in the face of abuse and how she finally gets the courage to leave. This is the true story of domestic abuse and the strength it takes to face up to it and get the hell out. Just like many women who are in the same situation, it wasn’t that easy for Betty. She had to, little by little, with help and support, gain the courage to leave. Exceptionally written, Not Exactly Love, is an easy smart read. Betty is a refined, intelligent woman that handles life with grace and class. How she got herself into this situation, how she manages to survive it, and how she gets out is what this story is about. She tells how hard day to day life is with the manipulation and fear that is always looming. She tells of how she evolves and grows in her self-esteem and strength that had been previously stolen from her by her abusive husband. “Why do many, if not most, women stay in an abusive relationship—and how do they overcome the fear in order to leave? Betty Hafner’s memoir is a heroic study of a woman and her strong will, as well as a working guide for women who are also in an abusive marriage or relationship. Betty’s story will help give some women the strength and courage they need, as well as some clear insight and advice. I believe this book should be put into the hands of single young women so they can recognize the warning signs before it’s too late. Not Exactly Love is set in the 1970’s. Things were very different back then. Women didn’t have the support that they do now. So it was especially difficult for Betty back then. But, what I also loved about it being set in the 1970’s, is that it took me back in time to a more easy simple life. I was able to reminisce with a smile on my face. Don’t get me wrong, this story is definitely filled with emotions such as anger, sadness, distress and ultimately hope, joy and victory. This is an inspirational read that readers can’t miss. It is, hands down, the best memoir I have read in a long time. It’s a cautionary tale. Betty Hafner shows readers that domestic abuse is the silent tormenter, because she had to keep it to herself at first. Her courage to come out and get help and plan her escape astounded me. Not Exactly Love is exceptional, heartwarming, engaging and poignant. It is written with eloquence and a beautiful prose that compels the reader to keep turning the pages to find out what will become of Betty. The ending was definitely satisfying and airtight. I loved Not Exactly Love. It is one women’s horrifying account of domestic abuse, her intimate details of her inner life, and her courageous escape to freedom and a better life.

Author, Thea Casey, takes us on a journey into the heart of a broken woman and how by turning and surrendering her life to God, she is able to overcome her devastating past and move on to a more bright and happy future. Strong to the Bone
by
Jon Land
Chick Lit Cafe
, November 10, 2017
“Strong to the Bone” is smart, harrowing and phenomenal. It starts out strong and is action packed throughout, full of mystery and intrigue with twists and turns at every corner. It has the very best components of a great thriller and will keep the reader glued to the pages in anticipation and excitement. The main character, Caitlin Strong has unrelenting strength, smarts and determination which she needs to determine her enemies and pursue them no matter what the consequences. She is courageous and unwilling to lose this battle that her grandfather started long ago. As she tracks and follows leads, she is continually faced with danger and even death. I was completely enthralled with this fast paced, exciting, well researched, and thought out thriller, the plot full of characters interwoven with great precision. Strong to the Bone is a 5-star read that will captivate the reader’s imagination while giving them an interesting glimpse into a neo-Nazi regime that somewhat and on some levels still plagues our society today. Praise for Jon Land and Strong to the Bone, an incredible read. Reviewed by ChickLitCafe.com

, November 10, 2017
Beautiful, moving and authentic! A Dress the Color of the Sky is impressive beyond reasoning. It is filled with both heartwarming and heart-rending emotion. From start to finish author, Jennifer Irwin, captures the reader’s heart and tugs deeply in her debut novel. She has tackled a sensitive subject based on reality, and accurately brought it to life with intensity, passion and drama. I absolutely loved A Dress the Color of the Sky. It is brimming with life. It caused me to smile, laugh, cry and even get angry. I love that it brought me, delightfully, out of my comfort zone. It touches on the human condition and issues that are normally hidden from society but never the less real, and I suspect somewhat common these days. That’s why this novel is very timely and relevant. What a remarkable novel! So personal, touching and moving! Reviewed by Chick Lit Cafe Reviewed by Chick Lit Cafe A Dress the Color of the Sky By Jennifer Irwin is a praiseworthy work of contemporary fiction. Jennifer has emerged as a fresh new voice in the writing community. One would never guess that this is her debut novel because it is unquestionably written with skill, creativity and real talent. It’s not at all surprising that A Dress the Color of the Sky is already chosen and set to become a full feature movie.
