Kelsey Ford: Powell's Picks Spotlight: Elif Batuman's 'Either/Or' (0 comment)
One of my very favorite memories from my first semester at college was the afternoon my freshman poetry workshop met up with another poetry workshop to “celebrate” the work we’d done by reading our (very bad) poems out loud for each other...

An Unlikely Alliance: An Uplifting Inspirational Romance by Toni Shiloh
    MFurumasu, May 22, 2022
I love dogs because they can be very loyal. This is the second book I’ve read recently about service dogs and how they can really be beneficial to the owner. I’ve been around service dogs and totally agree. This book tells the story of a woman struggling with panic attacks and anxiety. The dog helps her calm down when her heart rate increases and her body wants to shut down. Well, she has MANY opportunities for this to happen, since she’s paired with the one man, she finds is her exact opposite. They are placed on a fund-raising committee for the town, to help raise funds for their two causes. Life gets crazy and soon they discover things about each other, and changes happen. This story by Toni Shiloh is a story packed full of feelings of deep pain, crazy drama, fun humorous parts, and also sweet moments of powerful life lessons. Toni Shiloh has a wonderful way of conveying the feelings of each of the characters in this book. She has just the right way to bring these characters to life. She really is a joy to read. I laughed, I cried, I stayed up WAY TOO LATE, just so I could get one more chapter read! Through it all there is a strong message of how God loves us and will be there for us, even when we feel hurt, afraid, and unworthy. He shows us forgiveness and how to give it to others. I highly recommend you read this book! I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Veil of Winter by Melanie Dickerson
    MFurumasu, May 17, 2022
I’ve read a few of Melanie Dickerson’s books and they are all wonderfully written. She can take cherished fairytales and give them a medieval twist. In this story, there are many intriguing characters. An evil villain, an unloving parent, a tender-hearted heroine, and a knight-in-shining-armor. This book takes you on a ride of your life through many trials and struggles but in the end, the reader is rewarded with a captivating story of love! Melanie Dickerson is an author who makes the reader feel like they are right there with the characters. Woven throughout this book there are bits of sweet moments in these two main characters’ lives. Even though one of the characters is a royal, we still see things in both their lives that are very relatable to us as readers. When we can put ourselves in the characters’ lives and understand the pains and joys, that is what makes a book great! This author has done that! I highly recommend you pick this book up and enjoy all the pageantry and sweet romance of this magical book! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Shadow of Honor: (The Droseran Saga Book 3) by Ronie Kendig
    MFurumasu, May 11, 2022
I am amazed at all the creativity, and imagination Ronie Kendig has, to be able to write these stunning books! From the book covers to the intriguing details of all the characters, places, and languages, these books are truly captivating, from the first line to the last! I do have to say, I’m so sorry for Marco and all that he has to endure. Ronie has put him through so much, but OH, he really is a larger-than-life hero! I’m still trying to come down to earth after getting to the end of this book. While reading this book I had so many emotions building up in me. There were a few times of humor and fun, as well as times of deep hurt and pain. Many times, I had to step away from reading it because it got so intense. I didn’t want to read what I knew was coming, yet it compelled me to come back to it. I couldn’t put it down. It kept me so engaged and now I’m just waiting to go through the battle with them to see how it will all end. Unfortunately, I have to wait to read the next book in the series! I know it will be just as phenomenal and epic as all these other ones. Ronie Kendig is an author I will always go to, for powerful, stunning, adventurous, and captivating books to read. If you like epic space stories with larger-than-life characters and spectacular settings beyond what you can imagine then this is the series for you!

    Willow by Ronie Kendig
    MFurumasu, May 04, 2022
The story is about two people wanting to make a difference, and the struggles they face as they battle the evils in our world. Willow and Chiji show determination and love, for those who are suffering from the evil others place on them. They fight for the innocent ones and put their lives on the line to save them. This story not only shows the pains and guilt a victim can have, but it portrays the strong feelings of those who are trying to stop it. The characters in this book are so real, I found myself laughing with them, getting mad and sometimes VERY angry at them, loving them, and also crying over them. This book was so intense and full of deep emotions. It’s not a fluff story because it deals with issues that are heart-wrenching and very prominent in society today. It’s something many want to just sweep under the rug and not think about, but it needs to be brought to light and stopped. Ronie Kendig did a beautifully tender job of portraying the issues surrounding trafficking. You could tell her heart bleeds for those who are caught up in this horrible crime. This book gripped me and opened my eyes to issues around the world. Now I don’t want to put my head in the sand but take a stand and pray for all those who are captured in this evil crime. I highly recommend you pick up this book because it will change your life and how you view things! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

All That It Takes by Nicole Deese
    MFurumasu, April 06, 2022
“ 'It’s easy to feel so overwhelmed by our own life circumstances that the idea of changing the world seems downright impossible . . . sometimes all that it takes is one person being willing to step out in love for the betterment of another to change the trajectory of an entire life.' All that it takes is one.” These are powerful words from a powerful, touching story. A story of finding one’s place in life, overcoming obstacles, valuing life, and following God’s direction. I loved this story for how real and raw it was. How one person can truly make a difference in another person’s life just by sitting alongside and listening to their story. WOW! Nicole Deese has put so much of her heart into this book. We feel the pain and struggles of each of the characters. We also feel the joy they receive. What an amazingly written tale that reflects true events in our society even to this day. The whole community of women who are hurting and needing love is a very real thing. This is a wonderful example of how a community/church can reach these individuals. It’s a story that will tug at your heart, showing the blessings God can give. I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it. It just might change your way of looking at things.

Nana the Great Comes to Visit by Lisa Tawn Bergren
    MFurumasu, March 22, 2022
This book is such a delight to have! I can definitely identify with Nana! Now I'm not one to be "naughty" and I'm not a "Nana" I'm "Oba" but this book really holds true to what I want my grandchildren to feel about me. I've read this to one of my granddaughters and she loved it! She said it was a fun book and she loved the pictures! She even dressed up after reading it. So fun! I highly recommend you pick this up if you are a grandma, whatever you are called. It will be a delight to read to your little bundles of joy! Shaped by the Waves by Christina Suzann Nelson
    MFurumasu, February 10, 2022
What would it be like to not really know who you are? Well, this all comes crashing down on Cassie when her great-aunt/surrogate mother becomes ill, and she needs to move back to the town she grew up in. This story is a story that will tug at your heart and not let you go. It goes deep into the emotions of your life and brings them to the surface. It was compelling and so full of relational aspects. It was well written and flowed smoothly, so smooth that at the end my heart was spilling all over the place. I felt I knew all the answers to Cassie’s life, but I was wrong. I really felt connected with these characters and walked with them through all their issues. I also LOVED the relationship Cassie had with Marshall. So sweet and endearing! (What a guy!) The thing I love about Christina Suzann Nelson’s writings is that she brings such realness and depth to all her characters. I also appreciate the way she writes about some tough issues and how others deal with them. She doesn’t sugar-coat the pain and hurts her characters experience, yet she brings beautiful and poignant resolutions and makes them relatable. Pick up this book and you will see how the small fictitious town of Gull’s Bay on the Oregon coast changed many peoples’ lives. It just might change your life too. I was given this book by the publisher and in no way did it influences my review, all opinions are my own.

Texas Cold Case Threat by Jessica R. Patch
    MFurumasu, February 05, 2022
Whenever I pick up a book written by Jessica R. Patch, I know I’m in for the ride of my life, this one was just that! Who would have thought trying to lay low and recover from an error that cost a life, would put Chelsey in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was it? Then add to this the guilt of lying to her best friend for many years. Will her friendship with Tack survive or, will his finding out all her secrets cause an even greater loss? When reading a book, I always try to place myself in the main character’s life. Well, with either of these main characters I think I’ll pass! Too many near-death situations. In this book, the author has made her characters go through so much I can’t believe they are still standing! WOW! I love reading Jessica R. Patch's books! She does such a wonderful job in putting twists and turns in this story, you never really know who the bad guy is until the very end. I love mystery and suspense, and solving crimes, but she has such a skill that I was totally thrown off, and when I got to the “who done it” part I was taken by surprise. This to me, is what makes a fantastic author! I highly recommend picking up this book. However, I need to warn you, you might not get much sleep until you finish reading it!

In Search of a Prince by Toni Shiloh
    MFurumasu, February 02, 2022
I have been waiting a long time to read this story by Toni Shiloh. I was hooked when I saw the gorgeous book cover, and then the thought of a new kind of story. An African princess. There are lots of books out and about “royalty,” but most are based in European countries. I’ve never read one based in Africa, so I knew it would be a delightful book to read. Then having Toni Shiloh write it, I was more excited, because her books are rich with culture. Brielle had her whole world turned upside down when she found out about who her father was. Then to find out that her grandfather, the king of a country she didn’t know of, was dying . . . WOW! So many emotions! This book captivated me from the very first page and I couldn’t put it down. The relationships between Bri and her mom, her grandfather, her crazy friend, and Tomori, had me immersed in a wonderful tale, full of grandeur, drama, quirkiness, and sweet romance. With a bit of suspense mixed in. Toni Shiloh has a wonderful way of conveying the feelings of each of the characters in this book. She has just the right way to bring these characters to life. She really is a joy to read. I laughed, I cried, I stayed up WAY TOO LATE, just so I could get one more chapter read! Through it all there is a strong message of how God loves us and will be there for us, even when we feel afraid and unworthy. I highly recommend you read this book!

Tough as Steele by Susan Sleeman
    MFurumasu, February 02, 2022
Wow! What a beginning of a new series by Susan Sleeman! A kidnapping of a dear lady puts two detectives on the run to find the answers and recur her. These two don’t really want to work together, but they are thrown into this case for two different reasons. Soon their connections bring in many different agencies around the Portland area to help. With this story, we get to see some old friends from some of Susan Sleeman’s past series. I was swept away by all the fast-moving pace of this story. One time, I even voiced out loud how I just couldn’t see the connections. Wow! It was so intertwined and had so many roadblocks. Susan Sleeman is a mastermind at bringing just the right amount of suspense to all her books. You really don’t know how it’s all going to end up until the very end! This is what makes an amazing author! When the reader gets so tangled up in the story that they don’t want to put it down. This book not only has action, tension, and suspense but there is a bit of romance . . . well, maybe a little more than a bit! These characters learned that it’s okay to rely on others and God because He’s there for us and wants our best. They also learn the meaning of family and what a strong family truly is like. If you love action, suspense, and intrigue, then I highly recommend you pick this book up.

Never Leave Me by Jody Hedlund
    MFurumasu, December 16, 2021
In this second book in the Water of Time series, I was once again captured by the thought and wonder of whether or not there really is such a thing as “Holy Water.” Could it really heal someone or give you the power to travel back in time? The author of this story takes us on a ride like you won’t believe. With characters who are so real and yet, events so beyond our imagination. I’m so glad the author brought this story right back to the first one and connected it in a seamless way. My heart went out to the struggles both Harrison and Ellen dealt with regarding their own illnesses. I loved the tension and care they each had for the other. It was so powerful yet, they themselves couldn’t see their love. This book had drama, suspense, action, medieval elegance and hardship, and sweet romance that will knock your socks off. Oh, the Romance!! Jody Hedlund’s books are colorful, exciting, easy to read, and full of wonderful images. The dialogue flows so smoothly. I was truly caught up in the story and didn’t want it to end. It took me to the 1300s with so many wonderful images and splendid verbiage. I loved everything about this book! I highly recommend you pick this book up and enjoy all the pageantry and sweet romance of this magical book! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

    Entwined by Jody Hedlund
    MFurumasu, November 27, 2021
The first book of this series had me hooked in this magical land of Norvegia. Now, this second book has “entwined” me deeper into the whole fantasy of dracos, knights, castles, and princesses. There is beautiful pageantry and grandeur, it made the story come alive! Jody Hedlund writes stories full of colorful images, sweet dialogue, and fierce battles with evil forces. In this story, we continue the saga of the rightful heir to the throne of Norvegia. Can the true “worthy one” be able to save the throne from the evil schemes of Rasmus? Will Elisbet be acknowledged as the princess she is? Will Ansgar be able to protect his heart and the princess? This is an enchanting story about love, honor, friendship, loyalty, and justice. It's also a story about making the truth of the past be known and conquering evil. An author who can create a wonderful world that captures your mind and takes you on a journey into the unknown is an author I will read more from. Jody Hedlund is such an author. This book had drama, suspense, action, medieval elegance, overwhelming hardship, conquering evil, and sweet romance that will knock your socks off. I highly recommend picking this book up! It really will keep you captured! I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

    Enamored by Jody Hedlund
    MFurumasu, November 11, 2021
When I heard there was going to be a new series written by Jody Hedlund, I knew I needed to get it. I love her books and how she brings such colorful images and verbiage to her stories. This book is a GREAT start to a new series of stories, set in the fictitious world of kings, queens, princesses, knights, dracos (dragon-like creatures), and castles. It even has a hint of the Norwegian culture and of Viking ways. I was so “enamored” with this story that I read it all in one day. I didn’t want to put it down because I wanted to see how Elinor and Maxim finally won over the evil trappings holding them apart. This is an enchanting story about love, honor, friendship, loyalty, and justice. It's also a story about righting wrongs and conquering evil. An author who can create a wonderful world that captures your mind and takes you on a journey into the unknown is an author I will read more from. Jody Hedlund is such an author. This book had drama, suspense, action, medieval elegance, overwhelming hardship, and sweet romance that will knock your socks off. I highly recommend picking this book up! Launch: Rise of the Anointed, Book 1 by Jason C. Joyner
    MFurumasu, November 02, 2021
Wow! I didn’t know what to expect from this new-to-me author, but I was blown away! This story was very captivating and intriguing. It flowed so smoothly even though it had things I wasn’t familiar with, being that I’m an older person and not really up on the tech stuff. It was easy to understand and imagine. Another thing that I loved was the whole idea of these kids with special gifts. Each one did not know what their gift was or why they had it. Only thought they were weird. This is so true for young teens. Many of them struggle to find who they are and what their worth is. Jason Joyner is new to me as an author, and I really enjoyed the way he told this story. His writing was easy to read and full of wonderful images. The characters were well developed and very relatable. I’ve worked with middle and high school students, and I know many would love to read this book. It draws the reader in and keeps them engaged. I highly recommend picking this book up to read if you like YA fiction, superheroes, and Christian fantasy. It will keep you wanting to see what these kids can really do in the future. I know I’ll be reading the next book in this series. I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Inn at Walker Beach by Lindsay Harrel
    MFurumasu, September 21, 2021
I felt the author did a fantastic job with the story of Elise. She’s an older woman who has some fairly deep self-issues and she questions whether she can be a help to these younger women when she feels her life is falling apart. The other was about a single mom who always feels like she’s failing those around her. She has dreams but feels she can’t reach for them because she’s caused too many others to have to give up their dreams. The whole book is a story of women coming together to support each other and encourage each other to pursue their dreams. Lindsay Harrel is an author I will go to whenever there’s a new book out. Her stories are rich with deep lessons of what God can and will do in our lives if we trust in Him. Her writing flows so well from the dialogue to the settings. The reader can get captured and taken to a place that is real and relatable. This book is a sweet tale of family relations, friendships, tender love, heart desires, and a beautiful lesson of how God really does want to take our burdens, our dreams, and bless us more than we could imagine. It’s a story of finding a voice and a purpose. I highly recommend you read this book! It's a sweet story that will touch your heart! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Mug of Mayhem by Angela Ruth Strong
    MFurumasu, September 05, 2021
This is the last book with the mighty duo of Marissa and Tandy, and it will keep you guessing throughout the book. How these two can find so much mystery is beyond me. Trouble is still continuing to find them. These are two very different fun women who each LOVE their choice of drink. So, they love their little coffee and tea shop where they meet interesting customers. However, some of the customers are a bit strange! From the very first chapter to the end there are so many twists and turns. I truly loved reading how Marissa and Tandy joined forces to find out what really happened and who was the real murder in this story. They’ll do anything to get the guys they love out of trouble. They even get mixed up with a bunch of crazy senior citizens who will make you laugh and keep reading. Angela Ruth Strong is a wonderful author and has written many fascinating books. Check out the rest of this series for ones that will leave you wanting more coffee or tea! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

    Tempting Tait by Chautona Havig
    MFurumasu, August 31, 2021
Another sweet and thought-provoking book by Chautona Havig. This new series has me reviewing my thoughts on many things. I’m loving the convictions and determinations these characters are having. The ideas are different, but yet, the same. The author has presented real deep social issues and brought out beautiful examples of how we can provide a solution. I love it when I read a book and it sort of “hits me in the face,” as well as, entertains me. This is one of those books, and Chautona Havig is one of those authors. Her books are always clean reads and so very intriguing. Chuatona Havig has done it again with this new series it has wonderful characters who are believable, fun, very interesting, and never boring. Chautona Havig always knows how to create clean reads with wonderful characters and settings. I also got a kick out of the tense between all the characters. Tait just wants to be doing the right thing, but sometimes it’s hard. I look forward to reading more stories involving some of the characters in this book! Now, to wait until the new books come out! If you like clean thought-provoking books that will delight you and keep you reading until you finish it in one day, then this is the book for you!

Come Back to Me by Jody Hedlund
    MFurumasu, August 22, 2021
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel back in time? Do you even believe it’s possible? Well, that’s what this book will make you think about. The author of this book will hold you captivated from the first page to the last, with the thought that maybe, just maybe, it really is possible. I loved the characters in this story. The hero was so larger than life, WOW! I would love to have him protect me. The main female character in this story is smart and spunky. I enjoyed all the ways she had to adapt to living in 1381, and also how it changed her life. I’ve only read one other book by Jody Hedlund, but I think I’ll need to read more. Her books are colorful, exciting, easy to read, and full of wonderful images. The dialogue flows so smoothly. I was truly caught up in the story and didn’t want it to end. I see that there will be another book and I’m looking forward to reading more of this story! This book had drama, suspense, action, medieval elegance and hardship, and sweet romance that will knock your socks off. I highly recommend picking this book up! It really will take you for a spin!

    Night Watch by Susan Sleeman
    MFurumasu, August 20, 2021
Well, it’s the last of the Byrd brothers to have his story told. Erik has been the quiet one. The baby in the family, but this is no quiet story. Wow! In this story, we get all the fun brothers’ banter and continue to see many of the other characters from other series. I enjoy this because it makes these characters seem like real people. I also have a strong desire to go downtown and see if I can find the Veritas building and see where Nighthawk Security is. This story deals with issues surrounding families and all their many secrets. It also has some interesting new thoughts in the pharmaceutical world. Science isn’t one of my favorite subjects, but at times I do find it amazing. I love reading books by Susan Sleeman. She truly paints the picture of what can be out there and what we as people need to be aware of. Susan Sleeman brings intrigue and drama to her stories. Many of them deal with cutting-edge technology. This book not only has action, tension, and suspense but there is a bit of romance . . . well, maybe a little more than a bit! If you love action, suspense, and intrigue, then I highly recommend you pick this series up and start reading it! I stayed up way too late to finish this book. WOW! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Since You've Been Gone by Tari Faris
    MFurumasu, August 02, 2021
Have you ever lived in a town where everyone knows everyone? Where the past never seems to die no matter how long you’ve been gone? Well, this sweet town of Heritage is a town that is just this way. It’s also a town that’s seen better days and is struggling to stay unique, drawing people in for visits or to stay. I love the name of the town because we all have a “heritage” it might be good or it might be bad, but it’s our story. The characters in this newest book based in Heritage all have a past they’re trying to rise above. From the misunderstood wealthy guy to the misunderstood creative woman who’s been hurt one too many times. As well as the wounded woman no one knew was abused, to the wounded music star who was damaged in a scam. All these characters and many more bring this town to life with their stories of finding healing, acceptance, and love. There are also moments of frustration, laughter, longing, and hope. Tari Faris wove sweet life lessons throughout this story, truths like we don’t need to be the ones in control. God’s got it all in His hands and timing. I’ve truly enjoyed her style of writing. This book flows smoothly and is very entertaining. I think that I will continue to read anything she writes. I highly recommend you pick this book up. It might touch your heart just like it did mine. Husband Auditions by Angela Strong
    MFurumasu, July 28, 2021
Who would have thought a “List” to catch a husband, would really work. When I read through the list I about died. There are some real doozies on this list and the way Angela Ruth Strong writes them into this book is priceless! This story is so delightful, charming, quirky, and fun! It helped that the story was set in my hometown so I could picture all the places they went to. I fell in love with the characters and the whole storyline. Of course, there were a few times I wanted to scream at the characters, but overall, it was so fun, and I laughed many times. I even read a couple of parts to my husband, who then just rolled his eyes at me. I don’t know if I’d tell anyone to use this list, but who knows, some of the ways might just work. Hehe! The book had many fun humorous parts and some deep parts. There were times I cried and times I laughed out loud. I loved all the banter between Kai and Meri. I also LOVED the whole duck-tape scene with Gemma. I was rolling on the floor with that one. Angela Ruth Strong is a wonderful author and has written many fascinating books. Check out her other books. You just might start to read all her books! Now I’m just wanting to read more about Meri and Kai. I’m hoping and praying they’ll pop up in another story soon. I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Enchanting characters, magical moments, full of wonder, drama, and tension with a little bit of romance mixed in; this is what you’ll get when you pick up Shadow, the last book of the modern re-telling of the classic Peter Pan story, written by Kara Sanwson. I was so delighted when I heard there was going to be another book after Dust by the same author. The first book was very entertaining, and this book just continued to delight me. The author blends the real world with the make-believe in such a way that you believe anything is possible. I truly enjoyed this book and all the wonderful characters in this story. It was full of life and adventure. The story takes the reader on a ride that will twist and turn, making the reader want to fly through every page just to get to the end and breathe. There are some deep moments where I found myself holding my breath because I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. As a reader, I was captivated with all the fantasy and “pixie-dust” because it made the thought of wishes and dreams coming true. Thanks, Kara Swanson for writing this sweet, adventurous, magical tale. I highly recommend you pick it up and take a ride on fairy dust! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Cold Case Double Cross by Jessica R. Patch
    MFurumasu, July 11, 2021
All she wanted to do was take a vacation and yet, the minute Mae stepped into town things started going crazy. Being a cold case detective seemed to follow her even to her hometown, and her past hurts were still there hanging on. Could she solve this old-new case before she or anyone else, gets killed? Cash just wants justice for his brother. Can Cash convince Mae that he really is sorry for what he did so many years ago, or will it hinder them from finding the real killer, without getting killed themselves? This story also dealt with some tough issues many people struggle with. This author shared the struggles of a person with Dyslexia and a person dealing with abuse. Each issue can be so overwhelming and have tons of lasting complications. There’s a quote that really spoke to me. Jessica Patch is a very skilled author who weaves intriguing stories that will grip your heart and captivate your soul. Her stories also have wonderful examples of how God can take a hurting individual, and fill them with peace, joy, and love. I highly recommend picking up this book. However, I need to warn you, you might not get much sleep until you finish reading it! It’s a story that has SO many twists and turns your heart will be pumping hard and you might hold your breath. But just remember to breathe or you’ll miss the shocking ending! I was given this book by the publisher and in no way did it influences my review, all opinions are my own.

Rose Among Thornes by Terrie Todd
    MFurumasu, June 27, 2021
This was a deeply touching story to read. I had no idea the Canadian-Japanese people experienced the same things as the American-Japanese people did. I was captivated and taken on an emotional journey through this book. I’ve always felt what these individuals went through was a shame. American/Canadian-Japanese people very rarely complain or demand justice for the wrongs done to them. This is their nature and the way they pay honor to their families. Terri Todd does a wonderful job depicting many of the struggles these dear people dealt with. Her story flowed and was well written. The images of what these characters went through on a daily basis held my interest. Thank you, Terri Todd, for writing such a wonderful story of devotion, honor, respect, love, and forgiveness. And a story of God’s healing hand. I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it, it just might change how you view things, and each moment in your life! Plot Twist by Bethany Turner
    MFurumasu, June 15, 2021
If there ever was a book I thought should be made into a movie, this is it! Oh. My. Goodness! I loved every moment I read and I read it all in one day. There were a few deep relational parts, but oh the fun parts were so worth reading again and again! They were just so quirky and refreshing. Bethany Turner has become one of my MOST favorite authors to read if I’m having a bad day because I know I will laugh, cry, sigh, moan, giggle, and swoon! Her characters are so enjoyable to get to know. I truly feel I know them and want them to be my friends. In this story, we are taken through time. Each chapter is a new year on the same date, or around the same date. (It’s sort of like the Groundhog’s Day movie, but not!) I love how the author brings in SO many familiar movies, actors, and songs. It brings the story to life. Bethany Turner has a very fascinating way of writing! The voices of each character are delightful and intriguing. She also threw in some twists I didn’t see coming. This book is full of humor, drama, and awkwardness, as well as a sweet romance. It will make you laugh out loud. I found myself having to try and be quiet while reading it late at night, so I wouldn't wake my husband. There are also many tender moments between all the characters. I loved this story and will recommend it to anyone and everyone who wants a fun book to read. I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

All You Need Is Love by Lindsay Harrel
    MFurumasu, April 12, 2021
Have you ever felt invisible; like people didn’t see the real you? Well, that’s how Shannon saw the role in her large family. She was the one who gave and did things for everyone else, at the cost of her own happiness. Would she ever find happiness? This is another story of one of the Baker family members. I just love this family and the whole community of Walker Beach. I couldn’t put the book down because I was so invested in the lives of these characters. I truly enjoy reading books written by Lindsay Harrel. She brings such wonderful lessons to our hearts through her books. This story had many tender moments woven throughout. There were also times where my heart broke and I felt the emotional pain of the main character. To me, this is what makes a fantastic author. When a reader becomes so invested in the story they are reading, that they feel all that the characters are feeling. This book is a sweet tale of family relations, friendships, tender love, heart's desires, and a beautiful lesson of how God really does want to take our burdens, our dreams, and bless us more than we could imagine. This is a tale of reconciliation and standing up for what you believe in. It’s a story of finding a voice and a purpose. I highly recommend you read this book! It's a sweet story that will touch your heart! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

All That Really Matters by Nicole Deese
    MFurumasu, April 10, 2021
Molly meets Silas and some other challenging characters, and her life starts to take on a whole new meaning. I loved this story for how real and raw it was. There are many times we all wonder if we are making a good difference in other’s lives. Is what we do actually helping or hindering others. Nicole Deese has put so much of her heart into this book. We feel the pain and struggles of each of the characters. We also feel the joy they receive. What an amazingly written tale that reflects true events in our society even to this day. The struggles of aging out of foster care and the issues these young people deal with. This story is a story of past hurts, self-worth, friendships, acceptance, forgiveness, loss, and love. It’s a story that will tug at your heart, showing the blessings God can give. I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it. It just might change your way of looking at things. Hours to Kill by Susan Sleeman
    MFurumasu, March 12, 2021
From the first line of this book to the very end, I was held captivated and on the edge of my seat! What an ending to a FANTASTIC suspenseful series! I have loved all of the books in this series and this one was the icing on the cake! I’m shocked with all, the author, Susan Sleeman, put her main character through. My heart was pounding, and anxiety was high for sweet Addy. What more could happen to her? I love that these books are all based in my city, and I can tell Susan Sleeman has done her research because I know of many of the places she mentioned in this book and her descriptions are spot on. Susan Sleeman also had me guessing the whole book. I thought I knew who was involved and who was the bad guy, but boy was I wrong! This book not only has great action and suspense, but there was a bit of romance and learning that it’s okay to rely on others and God, because He’s there with us through it all. If you love action, suspense, and intrigue, then I highly recommend you pick this book and series up and start reading! What an amazing ending of an edge-of-your-seat series! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Blue Columbine: A Contemporary Christian Novel by Jennifer R. Rodewald
    MFurumasu, February 18, 2021
This book has been in my to-be-read pile for a while. I’ve heard so much about it but never taken the time to read it. I’m so glad I did this week. This story is one that will tug at your heart because it gets down and real. There is so much in it. It’s a beautiful, touching tale of young friendships, adult issues of addiction, forgiveness, healing, self-esteem, and love. The author Jennifer Rodewald didn’t sugar-coat the struggles of dealing with someone who is an alcoholic. She wrote her characters with all their flaws and yet she wove into this story the beautiful redemption and healing God can give. I highly recommend you pick this book up to read. It touched my heart and I hope it does yours.

Cast the First Stone: A Time Travel Thriller by David James Warren
    MFurumasu, February 16, 2021
Time is a strange thing. Sometimes we feel we have too much and other times, not enough. In this brand-new series by a wonderful team of authors, we are sent on an adventure that will blow your mind. Is time really bendable? Can we change it? Rembrandt Stone will find out in the strangest way, as he strives to solve a cold case that has been haunting him for years. OH. WOW! I’m still trying to wrap my brain around all that I read in this story. The authors have written a book that flows seamlessly and with a flair that only they could write! When I first heard this series was going to be written I knew I wanted to read it and now I’m so glad I have. This book kept me guessing and glued to my chair. It really was captivating and full of twists and turns. One minute I thought I’d gotten it all figured out and then I’m hit with something else. WOW! David James Warren - are writers, who know how to tell gritty, mind-blowing, and strong stories. From what you think can’t be possible they make it seem so possible. I’m really looking forward to reading the whole series. I also love that each of the books will be only a few months apart. That helps to keep the stories fresh in my mind! Now to wait without getting impatient. If you’re like me, you want to know what’s next for Rembrandt. How will all this change his life? ONLY TIME WILL TELL!

The Way It Should Be by Christina Suzann Nelson
    MFurumasu, February 02, 2021
Christina Suzann Nelson has written a beautifully touching story of healing, forgiveness, love, and hope. This book was so captivating and deeply moving. It was a story of three women’s lives and how they all connected. It’s also a story that portrays what the use of drugs and its never-ending pull, can do to individuals and their families. The whole world of foster-parenting, all the ins and outs, fears, and struggles, are foreign to me. I believe it takes a tender-hearted person or people, to be a foster parent. The author truly presents all aspects of this difficult and yet, what could be a rewarding, process. The thing I love about Christina Suzann Nelson’s writings is that she brings such realness and depth to all her characters. I also appreciate the way she writes about some tough issues and how others deal with them. She doesn’t sugar-coat the pain and hurts her characters experience, yet she brings beautiful and poignant resolutions and makes it just The Way It Should Be. I hope you too will pick up this book and read it, it might open your eyes like it did mine. I was given this book by the publisher and in no way did it influences my review, all opinions are my own.

Still the One: A Deep Haven Novel by Susan May Warren and Rachel D. Russell
    MFurumasu, January 20, 2021
This was a nice journey back into the community of Deep Haven. I am pleased and excited to start reading all these new stories written with the help of Susan May Warren and introducing a couple of new authors. What a fun refreshing way to get new authors the direction and guidance they might need. I love Susan May Warren's books and this Deep Haven series, so when I heard this was happening, I knew I wanted to read these books. Rachel D. Russell is a wonderful new author, and her style of writing matches beautifully with all the past Deep Haven books. I simply couldn’t find anything that was different. I wanted to keep reading and reading, not wanting to put the book down. Rachel D. Russell’s writing had humor, fun, and yet, deep beautiful touching moments. There was a time I actually cried while reading it. I found wonderful life lessons of the love of God, woven in such a way that it is real and not fake or pushed. This story included many of the past Deep Haven characters, so it truly was like coming back home after a long time of being gone. I highly recommend you pick this book up and start reading more of the community from Deep Haven. It will touch your heart in many ways!

Dawn of Vengeance (Book Two) by Ronie Kendig
    MFurumasu, December 31, 2020
From the stunning book cover to the last words on the pages, this book is full of colorful imagery that will capture your interest and not let you go. I love Ronie Kendig's books, they are always full of action, suspense, drama, and romance. This book is no different, however, add to that a bit of exhilarating space travel, out of this world technology, fun parkour stunts, and you have a book that will keep your head in the clouds. My heart ached and rejoiced for the characters throughout these first two books in the series. There might have also been a couple of times I shouted at them and said, NO! But I couldn’t put it down. It kept me so engaged and now I’m just waiting to go through the battle with them to see how it will all end. I truly can't wait to read the next book in the series! If you like epic space stories with larger-than-life characters and spectacular settings, then this is the series for you! I HIGHLY recommend you pick it up and start reading now!

    Night Vision by Susan Sleeman
    MFurumasu, December 05, 2020
There is so much in this book that will keep you trying to breathe, like snowstorms, life-taking threats, health issues, physical confrontations, and also swoon-worthy moments. The Nighthawk Security team is a family of brothers who are ready to make the city of Portland, as well as the surrounding area, safe. They use their skills and give of their time and resources, to make this happen. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the whole Byrd family. Now, I can’t wait to see them all in the other books. When reading this story, I enjoyed being able to envision exactly where it’s all happening, because this author has set it in my home state. I know of many of the places she mentioned in this book and her descriptions are spot on. I am loving reading Susan Sleeman's books! This story not only has great action and suspense, but there was a bit of romance . . . well, maybe a little more than a bit! These characters also learned that it’s okay to rely on others and God because He’s there for us and wants our best. I can't wait to dig deeper into this group of larger-than-life heroes! If you love action, suspense, and intrigue, then I highly recommend you pick this series up and start reading it! However, I have to warn you, once you start reading, you’ll want to go back and read all this author’s other books!

The Price of Valor by Susan May Warren
    MFurumasu, October 17, 2020
n this series. I personally enjoyed reading connections to the Montana Marshalls series and many of her other characters from past series that Susan May Warren has written. It’s always fun to reconnect with past characters from her other books. It’s like we know them, and they are family. I think I will continue to apply this disclaimer to all my reviews from now on: I'm at a loss to have words eloquent enough to convey the depth of emotions and feelings I get each time I pick up one of Susan May Warrens' books. In each of her books, I find wonderful life lessons of the love of God, woven in such a way that it is real and not fake or pushed. Whatever Ms. Warren writes I'll read because I know I'll be captivated and blessed in a way that is life-changing. Eyes Unveiled by Crystal Walton
    MFurumasu, September 26, 2020
“You’re meant to live with your eyes wide open . . . If you always keep them closed, you’ll miss the life right in front of you waiting to be lived.” OH, WOW! I really love this quote! So often we miss the thing right in front of us because we let fear or doubt take control. This is a beautiful story with moments in the main character’s life where she learns to let go and trust her feelings as well as what her purpose is in life. Not letting go of her dreams, because dreams can come true. Sometimes we just need to readjust them or look at them differently. This story brings to light some real heart-tugging issues of self-worth and making the right choices. Crystal Walton truly has a way of bringing emotions and feelings into her writing. You'll ache, laugh, cry, smile, snort, and do happy dances all while enjoying a fantastic story! I’ve always loved reading books that draw out emotions and feelings and give me a life lesson to walk away with. This book does that, and I highly recommend you pick it up. Now I’m ready to read the next book to continue to see what will happen with these characters. I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

    Risking Love by Toni Shiloh
    MFurumasu, July 17, 2019
So many of us have issues from our past which color our present life. Sometimes those issues can even keep us from fully living and enjoying God’s blessings. This is the case for Nikki. Her past had a very hurtful dark event and it has kept her from experiencing the full life God had for her. However, that doesn’t keep Shorty from caring for her and wanting a relationship with her. I love how Toni Shiloh writes with such beautiful examples of God’s healing powers. In one of the scenes it was so beautiful I had tears in my eyes. God really loves us even when we might have scratches, dents, cuts or marks in our lives. He loves us because He made us. What a beautiful example of God’s love for us and our worth to Him even with all our faults! This book also had lots of fun banter and sweet romance. The author knows how to balance these together in a wonderful way. Oh, now I also must comment on the character who had me up in arms. When I was reading the parts with Trina in it the primal instincts came out in me and I wanted to rip her eyes out! Toni Shiloh really knows how to write a villain! I also appreciated how the author showed the tension between Nikki and her family. Which portrayed how deeply the pain was and how something like this doesn’t just affect the victim, it can affect the whole family. Even though there is pain and hurt out there, God desires to heal those hurts, and give hope for the future! I want to thank the author for writing such a wonderful story. I highly recommend you pick this book up. I was given this book by the author for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

Shine the LIght by April McGowan
    MFurumasu, July 04, 2019
I wish there were more stars I could give this book! I am so deeply touched by April McGowan and this book. She has a beautifully tender way of bringing to light the pains of homelessness, mental illness, and those it touches. This book is a sequel to her last book, Holding the Light and it is just as vividly worded and woven with stunning images as the first book. This story deals with issues we all see around us but often overlook. I really love a quote she has in the book: “Homelessness, mental illness, and hunger were too huge for any one person to fix – easier to look away and hope someone else would take care of it. Or blame those caught in the trap- be it of their own making or someone else’s.” WOW! So true! This book tells the story of Shannon, who is dealing with the pains of being raised in a dysfunctional family. She has PTSD episodes from her childhood because of the many horrific events which happened to her. Can she overcome her past and move on? April McGowan captures our attention with wonderful characters, vivid images, and heart touching moments throughout the whole book. I personally work with students who deal with mental illness and I am truly impressed by the honest and tender way this author portrays it in the book. I also live in the city this book is based in and we do have a big homeless issue. All a person needs to do is step out their door and they will be made aware of the need around here. I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it. It will touch your soul in a deep way. I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

    Masterpiece by Francine Rivers
    MFurumasu, July 02, 2019
I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to read this book. Now I’m glad I did. Wow, it touches so many places in my heart. First off, is the pain and trauma of some children, what they go through when their life is shattered and left to fend for themselves. I have worked with children who are from sad, dysfunctional living situations. My heart goes out to them and yet I know I can’t fix all their issues. Another place I was touched by this book, is in the fear of never being enough for someone to love. I’ve known what it’s like to doubt my own worth and seeing it played out in this book made me remember how it’s only through God’s love and grace I can have the confidence to hold my head high. I loved hearing all about the artistry and colorful imageries. I’m sort of a closet artist so this was wonderful to experience. It made me want to pick up my paintbrushes again and start drawing and painting. Francine Rivers is a wonderful storyteller. She knows how to cover current issues, the way she paints images in words truly brings the story to life and makes it real and relatable. Yet, she still delivers the hope which can only be found in Christ Jesus. I loved one of the quotes I picked up: “We’re all God’s masterpieces, created anew in Christ.” Just like what God says in the Bible -Ephesians 2:10 I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it. It could change your life for the good!

Storm Rising: The Book of Wars by Ronie Kendig
    MFurumasu, July 02, 2019
Ronie Kendig is a gifted storyteller. She takes a real look at military struggles and issues, blending them into fabulous tales which we don’t want to end. This story is one of those tales. From the VERY FIRST line: “He’d never killed a woman in cold blood before, but now was as good a time as any.” To the VERY LAST line. I was hooked and didn’t want to put this book down! You go on a roller-coaster ride with Leif and his team. From one mission to another with little time to breathe, and that’s what I wanted to do . . . JUST BREATHE! Wow! The action in this book is none stop. Then add to this action, suspense, and weird weather stuff. What you get is a book which will keep you on the edge of your seat, hands white-knuckled on the chair just waiting to see what’s going to happen. Ronie Kendig knows how to twist and turn the story in such a way you don’t see what’s right in front of you and when you see it, you can’t believe it! If you want to read a book packed full of intrigue, suspense, action (LOTS OF ACTION!), drama, military struggles, and a bit of romance, then this is the book for you! You might need a day or two to process all that happens in this book. Believe me, you won't be able to breathe deeply until the end, but it will be worth it. I highly recommend reading this book. Pick it up and start on the adventure of your life. I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

Tate: The Montana Marshalls by Susan May Warren
    MFurumasu, June 02, 2019
Have you ever felt like you didn’t fit into your family? Everyone has a purpose. I’ve felt that way before. I was the only blonde-haired, blue-eyed, left-handed one in the family. It was nothing I did which made me feel this way, it was just how I was made. However, as the years went by, I was shown by my family how they really did love me, and I was introduced to the One who loves me the most. If you’ve ever felt this way too, then you’ll understand what Susan May Warren’s characters in this story go through. There are a couple of characters who fight with the feelings of low self-worth and struggle with knowing their purpose. Sometimes through family dynamics, sometimes because of events in their past. This book has touched my soul deeply. I have found, anytime I pick up a book written by Susan May Warren I will get many life lessons. She has a beautiful way of speaking truth to our souls through her words. An example of this is a quote from the book spoken by the oldest brother to Tate the main character: “When you show up with nothing and discover that you’re loved because of who you are – that’s when you realize what it means to be a son of God. That’s when you discover that you’ve inherited more than you could possibly imagine. It’s pretty breathtaking . . . Sort of like free-falling, knowing that your chute is going to catch you.” We can all have this feeling if we give our lives to God. Susan May Warren’s stories are full of action, drama, a bit of suspense, and of course, romance. I am totally enjoying getting to know this whole Marshall family. I wish I could meet this very larger than life family from Montana. I think I’d love to have them as friends. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I'm at a loss to have words eloquent enough to convey the depth of emotions and feelings I get each time I pick up one of Susan May Warrens' books. Whatever Ms. Warren writes I'll read because I know I'll be captivated and blessed in a way that is life changing. I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

Whose Waves These Are by Amanda Dykes
    MFurumasu, April 30, 2019
“Every wave in that big old blue sea is a story.” A wonderful quote from this amazing book and this book is full of these nuggets. From the very first page to the end, this book had me captivated and wanting to read more. I didn’t want to put it down. It really was a book I kept thinking, “just one more page!” and hours later realizing I needed to go to bed. My heart was touched deeply with the story of Roy, Robert, and Jenny. The wonderful fun young lives, and yet, the deep pain of how war interrupted those lives. Then also the story of William, Annie, and Jeremiah, and the struggles they each dealt with as well as how so much of their stories all link together. This story brought many fresh thoughts regarding WWII to my mind. You may have someone in your life who was touched by that war. For me personally, it’s my in-laws. They also have their own stories. When I think of all they lost and all the struggles they went through, I can see how it has shaped them and made them who they are today. Amanda Dykes has written a beautiful story of many peoples lives all intertwined and deeply touched by loss and the waves of life. One last quote I want to leave you with is one which touched my heart: “Lift your head, brave one. This life is a storm, no doubt about it. But oh, the One who holds those waves, who holds our hearts. What it is, to think of facing this storm in His hands, wrapped in a love that is fathoms – infinite fathoms – deep.” WOW! Thank you, Amanda Dykes, for sharing this deep love of God with us! I highly recommend you pick this book up. It is Beautiful and deeply touching. I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

    Verity by Lisa T. Bergren
    MFurumasu, March 24, 2019
In the first book of this series by Lisa T. Bergren, Keturah brought her two sisters with her to the West Indies to take over the sugar plantation which was her father’s. We see how each of these three sisters are women with grit and determination. In this second book of The Sugar Baron’s Daughters, we learn more about the three sisters, however, this book focuses on Verity, the middle sister, who wants something to call her own. She feels a bit lost and misunderstood. She has hopes and dreams of becoming one of the first women to own her own mercantile. Along the way to completing this dream, Verity is hit with many struggles and losses. She learns to stand up for herself and make choices which might not appear right by all. Lisa T. Bergren is a wonderful storyteller. She has painted beautiful pictures in words, for us to be captured and taken to a time when life was lived day by day. Where, “tomorrow is a hope, not a promise.” This story has lots of drama, a bit of suspense and wonderfully sweet romance. It is also full of loyalty of friends, and family, who believe in and support Verity no matter what. I am now waiting to hear more about young Selah and her deep desires to care for others. Oh, what interesting things will we learn?! I know we will also hear more about Verity and Ian and their many adventures. I was given this book by the publisher and Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Knox, Volume 1: The Montana Marshalls by Susan May Warren
    MFurumasu, March 21, 2019
I’m walking around with a book coma. Do you know what I mean? It’s where you’ve just read a book and you can’t seem to get it out of your head. Where the characters are so real you wonder what they are doing now and what will happen in the future. In this new series by Susan May Warren, that is exactly what is happening to me right now! WOW! I wish I could meet this very larger than life family from Montana. I think I’d love to have them as friends. I’d also enjoy riding around the homestead and experiencing all the beauty God put there. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I'm at a loss to have words eloquent enough to convey the depth of emotions and feelings I get each time I pick up one of Susan May Warrens' books. She does this all in such a way where you as a reader, are drawn in and can't let go until the end. She uses action and suspense, drama and romance to woo the reader in. Her words touch the very center of your soul and hold you there. I was held there and couldn’t put the book down until I finished it, BUT then I wanted MORE! I truly can’t wait for the next book in the series, where I’m sure there will be tons of action, suspense, and romance, as we continue to get to know the Marshall family members. Whatever Ms. Warren writes I'll read because I know I'll be captivated and blessed in a way that is life-changing. I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

To Best the Boys by Mary Weber
    MFurumasu, March 19, 2019
There's just something about Mary Weber's books which draw you in even when the book is closed! They hauntingly call to you. This was one such book! This story shows how a girl of lower class can have dreams, drive, and skills to achieve anything a boy can. I love the picture of strength and courage Rhen uses, to meet all the challenges she has. I also love the fun relationship she has with her cousin. Even though Rhen feels alone, she really does have someone who is there for her. I want to thank Mary Weber for choosing to place in this book many characters who the world might not notice. Those, who might be shunned or looked down upon. She brings to life the sweetness and courage of these people. This book will be one I'll carry with me for a long time. It was full of wonder, strength, courage, hope, and yet there were bits of darkness, mystery, magic, suspense, and romance. (I liked the last bit on that list!) What truly stood out for me was - HAVE COURAGE! Dare to dream and dream big! I highly recommend you pick this book up! But be prepared to possibly not be able to put it down! I received a copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley. All opinions and my own.
