It's wonderful to be back in Heritage. I loved connecting with all the characters from the previous books and really enjoyed getting to know Seth and Grace. Seth's humble, repentant heart was so dear. Lessons on pride, reliance on God, and trusting others were profound and universal. Grace was a bit stand-offish, arrogant, and prickly at the beginning but relaxed enough to show Heritage and Seth her true self. Their heart for reaching the hurting and helping the children was admirable and endearing. Seth's struggle with substance abuse was real and raw as was Grace's struggle in the prima ballerina world. Their journey of faith, love, and discovery of purpose was precious and heart-warming. I can't wait for the next book in the series that will introduce me to more citizens of Heritage. The Warsaw Sisters: A Novel of WWII Poland
by
Amanda Barratt
MJSH
, November 24, 2023
“Perhaps courage is to be afraid, but to hold on still until the end.” Amanda Barratt’s writing is stellar - thoroughly heart-breaking but hopeful, historically accurate with fictional flair, and lyrical and poetic yet honest, raw, and gripping. I love her writing and I love her books. But this one was a difficult one for me to read. Antonina and Helena’s heart-shattering and terrifying journey from the beginning to the end of WWII in Warsaw was eye-opening and emotional. The fact that I became so entangled in the sisters’ lives as they suffered and rose up to fight for justice is a testament to the author’s incredible mastery at her art. I needed breathers between chapters because the grief, loss, and pain overwhelmed me at times. But I am richer for having read this story and for remembering those who died, fought, and survived. The Mermaid's Tale: Volume 1
by
L. E. Richmond
MJSH
, October 19, 2023
It's an imaginative and fascinating fairy tale that is like a spin-off of The Little Mermaid. Locklyn's first person voice was easy to love despite being an outcast and so brutally despised by many. Her selfless heart was endearing and I was cheering for her the whole entire story. I didn't unfortunately love the angst of unspoken and unrealized romantic love nor the brewing of a love triangle. Darin's perspective was in third person but it almost had an omniscient, dreamlike quality of someone else telling us what he was doing - this confused me at first and I had a bit of difficult time following his chapters. However, the cliff-hanger ending finally made me realize why his chapters needed to be written in this manner. I loved Darin's loyal, compassionate, and brave heart and I can't wait to see what happens next. There is plenty of adventure and adrenaline, fantastical sea monsters and enemies, folklore and magic, and some spiritual thread in this incredible underwater world the author has created in full color and detail. You will literally be swept away as Locklyn and Darin dare to risk all for their loved ones. Julia Monroe Begins Again
by
Rebekah Millet
MJSH
, October 19, 2023
It's a win for Rebekah Millet and her debut novel. Julia Monroe and her first person voice is honest, relatable, and funny. Her mama's heart is so tender and I was right there with her as she learned to adjust to being an empty nester. Though Julia is a bit younger than I am, her woes and delights were on point. There is great banter between Julia and Samuel and I really enjoyed their second chance and the themes of true forgiveness, living boldly, and leaving fear behind. The quirky supporting cast of Julia's and Samuel's family and friends made the story quite lively. It wasn't exactly a rom-com, though Julia's inner voice was funny in a self-deprecating way. It was more of a women's fiction with a good measure of romance and faith. I loved learning about New Orleans and the culture surrounding that great city. One day I will make it there to visit. Better Watch Out
by
Natalie Walters
MJSH
, October 11, 2023
Oh, this was such a fun Christmas novel! It had less suspense and action than the author’s previous books but had as much romance and witty banter. There were hilarious moments in the story that made me cry tears of mirth and swoony scenes that stole my breath. All the holiday tourist attractions that Frannie and Andrew visited were the proverbial icing on the cake. I live close to NYC but have only done a couple of the things on Frannie’s bucket list; after reading about the Christmas magic at these places, I definitely need to experience them. Frannie was a lovable, bubbly, compassionate sweetheart and Andrew was a tender yet formidable protector. I loved their easy camaraderie and how they complemented each other. Fans of the author’s previous Harbored Secrets series will appreciate Ryan and Vivian’s roles in the story. If you love Christmas novels, you will definitely love this one. It’s full of fun, magic, romance, and all things Christmas-y. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of the author and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

The Looking-Glass Illusion: Volume 2
by
Sara Ella
MJSH
, October 07, 2023
This sequel in The Curious Realities Duology is more intense, electrifying, complex, and mind-bending than I imagined - and that's saying a lot since the first book was superb in its intricate plot and deeply layered characters. This story will completely absorb you as Alice and Chess, sometimes together but oftentimes separately, traverse through the Fourth Trial, which turns out to be a whole lot more than just the last trial. I felt like I was right there with them through the crazy wild ride of following clues, unwinding riddles and battling fears. Themes of forgiveness and believing in the impossible were keys to what Team Heart was called to do in the Trials. I loved getting to know the secondary characters better and loved seeing new faces enter the Team's rank. The backstory between the Hatters and Shires was enlightening and Alice's own past was brought to light with the clues within the looking glass. Of course, the plot had plenty of action and surprises, as well as betrayals and sacrifices, to make it an exciting adventure. If you love YA fantasy, this book is a must read. Its captivating plot and characters make it unforgettable and you will never look at Alice in Wonderland the same way again. The Cost of the Crown
by
Joy Crain
MJSH
, September 23, 2023
Bravo to Joy Crain for this excellent debut novel. I love royalty books and this one had it all - grandeur and opulence tied with royalty but also the need for balance between tradition and progress. Missy and Aiden were such lovable characters. Their common bond of mixed heritage and not really feeling like they fit in anywhere was heartbreakingly raw and real. Faith thread and the theme of forgiveness were strong throughout the story and Missy's spiritual growth was satisfying, even as she struggled against sense of abandonment. Aiden's backstory made me cry and his journey to finding his true self while battling nightmares, insecurities, perceived failures, and expectations made him a valiant hero and prince. I really enjoyed the fictional Asian island country of Andelar in the South Pacific. The island was beautiful and the culture, food, language, and political layout were intriguing and captivating. The author addressed some issues within the Asian culture like stigma of adoption and neglect of the homeless, poor, and orphaned, which broke my heart. It's a book that will leave your heart filled and happy at the end. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of WhiteCrown Publishing and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. The Eternity Gate: Volume 1
by
Katherine Briggs
MJSH
, September 23, 2023
What a fantastic debut novel from Katherine Briggs! I loved Seyo's first person narrative and her curious, clever, and brave soul that lived for all things history. Her priestess' heart was pure and receptive, which allowed her faith to grow and mature as she sought to find and open the Eternity Gate. Seyo's journey to save her kingdom had tons of action and battle, betrayals at every corner, and surprises at every stage. The plot was complex and deeply layered; the characters were quite wonderful and moving. My favorite character was Geras, who had a painful past but a heart-stirring redemption story and was the epitome of loyalty and selflessness. It does end on a cliffhanger of sorts and I can't wait for the second book of this duology. Any fantasy fan would thoroughly enjoy this epic adventure of kingdoms at war and race to find and open the ancient relic prophesied to hold power and judgment. The Lost Boys of Barlowe Theater
by
Jaime Jo Wright
MJSH
, September 14, 2023
It is another eerie, secret-filled, masterfully written dual time novel from Jaime Jo Wright. The two timelines are seamlessly melded together yet the main characters, as well as the secondary ones, in each timeline are uniquely memorable. In this story, we are transported to Kipper's Grove, WI, in 1915 when the recently built Barlowe Theater in town threatens all that Greta has left. In present time Kipper's Grove, Kit is emotionally and physically haunted by her best friend's disappearance, sabotage at workplace, and menacing bodily threats. How the disappearance of Greta's brother and Kit's circumstances tie together is absolutely mind-blowing. Twists and turns and surprises along the way will have you hanging on for an adventure you won't forget. With intricate plot, well-developed characters, and wonderful reminders about faith, The Lost Boys of Barlowe Theater will thoroughly captivate you as only a Jaime Jo Wright book can. The Starlet Spy: Volume 11
by
Rachel Scott McDaniel
MJSH
, September 07, 2023
Rachel Scott McDaniel never disappoints. Every book I have read by this stellar author has captured my imagination, heart, and spirit. The Starlet Spy is no exception. From page one, there is action, intrigue, drama, and mystery that pulls the plot at a fast clip. Tons of historical tidbits dot the storyline as Amelie, a Hollywood movie star in 1943, gets involved in a high-speed chase through Sweden for a missing research manuscript on atomic bomb. The plot is detailed and complex and flows smoothly with lots of surprises and plot twists. Amelie is so lovable - down to earth, intelligent, resourceful, playful, sunny, determined, loyal. Finn is powerful as a shipping magnate, broody, serious, and equally as intelligent and loyal as Amelie. They do have a history so it was lovely to see them overcome the obstacles. And the romance! Wow, Finn has a knack for sweeping Amelie, the sophisticated star, off her feet and he will sweep you off yours as well. It's a completely engrossing spy novel with historical details and romance. All's Fair in Love and Christmas
by
Sarah Monzon
MJSH
, August 27, 2023
Mackenzie and Jeremy do put on an excellent production of Christmas Wars: Office Edition. But instead of a cutthroat competition for promotion and raise, this rivalry becomes something incredibly sweet that helps the entire office remember wonderful family traditions and count the joys in their lives. The characters are delightful, the plot is fun, the faith thread and struggle are real, and the romance is swoony. The author does address some heavy topics like anxiety and dementia care with sensitivity, tenderness, and expertise. Throw in some really funny laugh-out-loud scenes and some totally heart-warming scenes and you have a perfect Christmas novel to cozy up with. Mackenzie's first person voice was creative and compassionate and my heart ached for her as she battled social anxiety. How her one-sided infatuation became something more was so gratifying (one of my favorite tropes). Jeremy's driven and determined third person voice was easy to empathize with but I loved his kind, considerate, and thoughtful side that peeked out from under all that planning and need for control. I also loved the supporting characters in Mackenzie and Jeremy's friends and colleagues circle who made the story extra special. The Lost Manuscript
by
Mollie Rushmeyer
MJSH
, August 25, 2023
"Now, I'm not talking about blind-eyed optimism. I'm talking about hard-fought, hard-won, hope. Born of a peace that only comes after a long battle, forged in the darkest mire you never thought you'd have to wade through. But you mad it and you know that you never would've made it through without His help." Mollie Rushmeyer has penned a beautifully heart-rending novel, full of brokenness and regrets yet threaded with overwhelming hope. I loved the thrill of a historical scavenger/treasure hunt for a rumored illuminated manuscript and was pleasantly surprised at the intricate and complex plot surrounding this premise. The twists and turns in their adventure to find the manuscript and Ellie's grandma added a nice layer of suspense. Faith in the midst of anger and pain was a major thread in the story and I appreciated Ellie and Alex's growth as they struggled through their past failures, unmet expectations, and grief. Ellie and Alex were both fallible but lovable characters who demonstrated that people in love can still hurt each other and destroy the foundations of marriage. The theme of choice - choosing to forgive and choosing to love - became their banner in their relationship and it's also a good reminder for us all. If you are a fan of women's fiction, you will love this book. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Love Inspired via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. Hero Debut
by
Angela Strong
MJSH
, August 25, 2023
How is it possible that I have not read a full-length novel by Angela Ruth Strong until now? I need to gobble up all of her backlist and be on the look out for her future works; this book has made me a devoted follower. Every chapter had me crying tears of mirth but the latter chapters also had me crying tears of heartache. With surprising depth and meaning, this story of Gemma and Karson is quite poignant and thought-provoking in addition to being hilarious and witty. I loved the pop culture references to movies and enjoyed all the quotes about heroes ranging from Rick Riordan to Fred Rogers to Eleanor Roosevelt to Bob Dylan. The faith thread blossomed and grew throughout the story and the main characters' growth was satisfying, particularly with Karson. It created a wonderful picture of what reconciliation and renewal looks like. If you love thoughtful romcoms, you will absolutely adore this book. He Should Have Told the Bees
by
Amanda Cox
MJSH
, August 22, 2023
Surprisingly this is the first book by Amanda Cox that I have read. I can see why she has won multiple Christy Awards; her writing is beautifully lyrical and tugs at the heart. Though shrouded in grief, loss, pain, and regret, there was a ray of hope around every corner and the secondary characters of Luke, Fern, and Isaac reminded Callie and Beck of that hope. The setting of a farm in TN was quite peaceful and I loved learning about beekeeping and the daily workings of an apiary. I loved Callie; she was strong but compassionate and survived a ton of childhood trauma from living with an addicted and mentally ill mother. She managed her anger and all the crazy secrets that finally came out with maturity and rock solid faith. Beck was a bit less likable - her temper tantrums weren’t endearing, though she did mature towards the end. Little Fern was a hoot and provided that needed moments of laughter and levity when things got heavy. Though their roles were not huge, Luke and Isaac were great spiritual and practical sounding boards for the women and I absolutely adored them. Sky of Seven Colors
by
Rachelle Nelson
MJSH
, August 19, 2023
Rachelle Nelson’s debut YA fantasy novel is definitely worth reading. The author creates a fascinating "gray" world of giant Croppers and Regents that overlaps with our known world. Meg the human exploring the simple yet soulful atmosphere of the Croppers' domain and the fancy yet manipulative court of the Regents' reminded me a little of Alice in her Wonderland. Meg's growth from a timid and frightened girl into a strong young woman filled with conviction and a conscience that drives her to sacrifice was satisfying to see. I loved Proce and Von who provided much-needed wisdom, warmth, and tenderness as well as unexpected laughter. Kalmus was eerie and unsettling at best but we understand why as Meg gets to know him better. Very surprising twists in the plot turned the story upside down about 80% into the book and betrayal and greed played major roles in the plot twists. The story lost a bit of its momentum while laying down the foundation of the fantasy world. Much of the action and explanation happened quickly in only a few chapters near the end. The story slowed down again after these few chapters to lead to an ending that was somewhat anti-climactic and almost abrupt after having taken the entire book to get to that place. Despite these hiccups, the book was enjoyable. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Enclave Publishing via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. A Beautiful Disguise
by
Roseanna M. White
MJSH
, August 12, 2023
Espionage, intrigue, and secrets abound in this beautifully crafted historical fiction set in pre-WWI Edwardian England (1909). Roseanna M White’s gift of weaving intricate, engaging plots and creating charming, lovable characters shines so clearly in this book that kicks off her new series Imposters. Marigold and Merritt stole my heart with their backstories and sparkling souls; the surprises in the plot had me gasping at parts and the romance was sweet and tender. I loved learning about the beginnings of MI5 in England and other countries’ spy networks during this era. Menagerie of circus animals as well as circus retirees living with Marigold and Yates added flare and uniqueness to the setting. I am super excited about continuing in the Imposters’ journey! Yates, Gemma, and Graham should have fascinating stories of their own and I’m looking forward to some more excellent spy intrigue. You Make It Feel like Christmas
by
Toni Shiloh
MJSH
, August 03, 2023
What a fantastic Christmas book! I love how Toni Shiloh works a little magic (whether it be with royalty, celebrities, or a Christmas store, in this case) into all of her books, kneads them well with lovable characters and a fun plot, and seasons them liberally with down-to-earth faith lessons. And this newest offering, which is actually a revamp of her previously released I'll Be Home, does not disappoint. Starr and Waylon's banter is super fun and their relationship is cozy yet exciting and deliciously swoony. Starr is quite lovable as the baby of five siblings but she does have troubles and issues she must work through. Her path to forgiveness and sisterly love is a difficult one, but so rewarding. I loved Waylon's corny sense of humor, his devoted care of his mom's treasured store, and his gentle tenderness for Starr. Older-brother's-best-friend trope fits perfectly into this Christmas themed story and it was a fast, easy, and fun read. The five Lewis siblings and their crazy antics reminded me of my four children when they're all home so this book struck an extra special chord with me. Whether you read Christmas-themed books all year long or like saving them for the season, you will totally enjoy this book and fall in love with Starr and Waylon. Positively Penelope
by
Pepper Basham
MJSH
, July 28, 2023
Oh, the deliciousness of it all! Penelope the Sunshine and Matt the Grump are my favorite couple of 2023 so far. Told through a series of emails and texts with some interspersed third person narratives, this book will melt your heart, have you grinning from ear to ear, make you laugh out loud, and convince you to believe in fairy tales again. I felt like I was in Fiacla with Penelope and loved the breath of fresh air the beautiful island was. The banter amongst the cousins and siblings was hysterical and crazy but also unbelievably sweet and tender at times. I enjoyed learning about the business and marketing aspect of running a theater. The pop culture references were so much fun and I will never look at Julie Andrews, Audrey Hepburn, or Rambo the same way again. Penelope's fresh, candid, optimistic and enthralling voice was absolutely delightful. Her "spoonful of sugar" attitude was perfectly balanced by Matt's stoic and solemn outlook and I loved how they learned to embrace their differences to create something beautiful from ashes. Though Matt only had a small third person voice in the storyline, his steadfast, loyal, tender, and still healing heart that Penelope saw totally won me over. If you are looking for an excellent clean romcom, look no further. You'll adore Penelope and Matt in Skymar. Summer in the Spotlight

Levi has held a very special place in my heart since the first book of the series and his story was well-worth the wait. His fiercely loyal, self-sacrificing, tender heart under the quiet stoic demeanor was a treasure to unwrap and behold. His actions spoke of his thoughtfulness and keen intelligence and I couldn't get enough of him! The backstory of his silence was heart-breaking but Kelsey's charming and truly delightful presence worked extra hard to pull Levi into a world of hopes and dreams. Their relationship that went from acquaintances to colleagues to friends to more was simply wonderful. I loved catching up with Eli and Violet, as well as Oliver and Megan, and fell in love with some of the secondary characters like Dustin and the Hermans. The faith lessons on overcoming fear because of love and what forgiveness looks like on a daily basis were on point. The setting of Prince Edward Island, even in the aftermath of a hurricane, took my breath away and it has become a destination that I must visit. It’s been a long time since I was a part of a theater production so it was fun to revisit building of sets, the ups and downs of rehearsals, and the adrenaline and sense of accomplishment during and after the show. If you're looking for a great story of hope and rebuilding, this book is perfect for you. Iris: An athlete hero, forced proximity, international race to save lives!
by
Susan May Warren
MJSH
, July 26, 2023
I absolutely adored Iris and Hudson. There's something extra special about non-military alpha heroes Susan May Warren creates - i.e. Ty and Ian from Montana Rescue, Wyatt from Montana Marshalls, and now Hudson. This story felt more romance than action/suspense, though there was definitely plenty of adrenaline from unknown villains chasing Iris and Hudson through Europe and beyond. I learned more than I thought possible about refereeing football games through Iris. I enjoyed learning about how football players train and work through Hudson. Their romance had chemistry and witty banter, balanced out by mutually hard-earned trust and tenderness. The chaos, love, banter, and fierce loyalty that is the Marshall family was simply delightful. I loved getting to know the matriarch Jenny better and expect she'll play a role in the next book. All the Marshall children and their loved ones under the same roof made me reminisce about the times when all my children are back home. Ty and Brette from Montana Rescue made a cameo appearance which made me giddy with happiness. Though some plot threads were worked out in this book, Iris and Hudson's story left me with more questions than answers regarding the rogue ex-CIA agent, Russians, and Lauchtenland. I'm bouncing on my toes to read Creed to find out all the answers! I received a complimentary copy courtesy of publisher via JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. The Light of Eidon: Volume 1
by
Karen Hancock
MJSH
, July 26, 2023
I can totally see why this book won the Christy Award in 2004 when it was first published and why Karen Hancock holds the enviable spot in the Christy Award Hall of Fame. Now with an updated and streamlined cover from Enclave Publishing, the book is gorgeous inside and out. It's a completely engaging allegory-fantasy novel that unfurls an epic adventure full of magic and good triumphing over evil. As characters navigate through pain, loss, and sacrifice, they learn about perseverance, true faith, and sense of purpose and calling. There is plenty of action in the gladiator games that is reminiscent of the movie Thor : Ragnarok. Told from Abramm and Carissa's third person point of view, we get to see the twins' growth and maturation as they leave the country they have become disillusioned with and enter a cruel new culture that only seeks to use them. Their journey to finding each other is fraught with betrayal, heartbreak, and agonizing soul-searching. Abramm becomes a warrior from his priestly scholar beginnings and I expect he's on his way to becoming a fierce king. Another solid offering from Lynette Eason. I loved getting to know Raina and Vincent better and it was a lot of fun catching up with the other main characters from this series. As always, there was plenty of nail-biting suspense and action with surprising plot twists, as well as strong faith threads. The sweet tender romance between Raina and Vince was a friends-to-more trope and even though Raina has a lot of baggage, Vince patiently pursued her. Faith lessons of trusting God to be in control were relatable and relevant. If you enjoy romantic suspense, you will definitely enjoy this book and series. How Sweet It Is: A Deep Haven Novel
by

MJSH

It's always so much fun to return to Deep Haven and this introduction to the Fox family was indeed a ton of fun. Robin was an easy heroine to relate to and her pursuit of her dream of becoming a renowned baker in Paris was quite an adventure. Sammy, in his steadfast, faithful, and tender way, was a wonderful hero who needed to overcome guilt and shame of his past and open his eyes to purpose God has for him. Sammy's interactions with the youth of Deep Haven were truly endearing and Robin's confectionery creations were mouth-watering. Their easy friendship from high school that blooms into something more was delightful and the strong faith thread was relevant. I also enjoyed all the cameo appearances of characters from previous books (Seth, Peter, Ronie, Megan, Colleen and Vivien among others). If you enjoy small town contemporary romance, this book will be perfect for you. I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. How can this delightful contemporary romcom be Kristi Ann Hunter's induction into the genre? You'd think this is her genre of choice and craft given how fun and engaging the book is, when in reality she's been firmly planted in Regency romance until now. I love the author's Regency books but am totally adoring her contemporary romcom! Emma and Carter are unforgettable characters who will live in my heart for years to come. The cast of secondary characters are well-developed and really fill out the story. The premise and plot are fascinating and I learned so much about painting and coding and the processes behind each craft. The dialogue is witty and fluid and the romance is swoon-worthy. I appreciated the faith threads in the story that complemented the characters' depth. If you enjoy contemporary romcom, this is a must-read. Thank you, Kristi Ann Hunter, for pouring out your genius into this genre; I, for one, so needed this book to make me smile, laugh out loud, and shed a few tears. Every book by Connilyn Cossette I have read is perfection, deserving of the Carol and Christy Awards they have received, and this inaugural book of her new series is no exception. The author knows how to masterfully weave the reader into the era and culture of her story, with plenty of adrenaline-filled action, a touch of sweet romance, and rivers of spiritual and practical wisdom. She's a gifted storyteller who joins first-person voices of Keziah and Avidan to take us on an adventure that crosses to eastern side of Jordan during the early years of King Saul. I learned so much about how different tribes of Israel may have lived during that time and also saw these Bible stories through a different lens, as if I were truly living within the events. I will never read Saul's anointing, the battle at Yavesh (Jabesh), and Saul's coronation the same way again. I had always known that the infant Israel of this time was fractured and fragile but the author's vivid painting of the dissident political and spiritual landscape was eye-opening. It's one of my favorite books of 2023! I received the book from Bethany House through Interviews & Reviews and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Toni Shiloh has done it again! In her previous series In Search of a Prince, the author took us on a delightful journey to an island kingdom off coast of Africa with royalty, government intrigue, and sweet romance. In this new series, we get immersed in Hollywood - with the glamour, paparazzi, and heartache along with life-changing faith and slow, tender romance. Nevaeh's first person voice is refreshingly honest, compassionate, innocent and so easy to fall in love with. Lamont's third person voice is humble, thoughtful, and loyal - he's definitely a swoon-worthy hero. Their crazy fake dating scheme seemed a little over-the-top and fairy tale-like but how their relationship developed felt very real and believable. Their struggle as believers with something the world may regard trivial hit home - we are called to be holy because He is holy. I also loved Lamont's friendship with believing brothers Chris and Tuck and I hope the series will bring them to spotlight. Filled with memorable characters, fun and witty banter, and great life and faith lessons, this newest by Toni Shiloh will be the perfect beach read. What an incredible start to a new time-traveling series by Lisa T Bergren! I have not read the River of Time series so now I need to go back to her first time-traveling series to get the background scoop. My lack of previous knowledge about the Betarrinis and Forellis did not interfere with my understanding of the plot or my complete enthrallment with the book and the characters. The backdrop of 1372 Toscana, Italy was beautiful, dangerous, and engaging. The history of medieval Italy and the constant warfare among the city-states were fascinating to "live" through as first person voices of present day Luciana and 1372 Tiliani guided the story. The battle scenes were realistic and action-packed, the romance slow and tender, the faith thread present and grounding. And the characters! Luciana is careful but fearless in her loyalty and Domenico, her twin, is bold and passionate. I loved the fierce warrior brother-sister duo Giulio and Ilaria and can't wait for what will happen next with them. Valentino was a swoony hero - mighty warrior in battle and loyalty yet gentle and compassionate as a healer. Tiliani and Valentino are star-crossed lovers from warring clans while Luciana and Giulio are star-crossed lovers from different time periods. The ending is a cliff-hanger and I'm bouncing on my toes for the next book to release! Man of Shadow and Mist: Volume 2
by
Michelle Griep

, June 24, 2023
Set in Victorian England of 1890, Man of Shadow and Mist beautifully ties the gothic with romance and faith. What a fascinating historical romance! The swirling mystery and intrigue regarding a vampire kept the underlying tension taut as we discovered the character of Sir James, one page at a time. The rare but devasting medical condition called porphyria was interesting to read about. I loved the cameo appearance of Bram Stoker and the beginning of how his manuscript of Dracula may have come about, as well as some secondary characters in this book named after those in his book. Sir James was a perfect Victorian hero - brooding, abrupt, and mysterious, yet loyal, noble, honorable, kind, and thoughtful. Rosa was a great heroine - a lover of books, spunky, and progressive in her thoughts. Their faith and surrender to God's will were profound. Albin Mallow was an interesting character that gave us a light-hearted break from the heaviness and sorrow in James' life (but he also made a choice that showed his growth and maturity in the end). If you enjoy historical romance with a touch of gothic, you will absolutely love this book. "Never mind her heart. She had her dignity. Sometimes that was all a lady did have when everything else was gone." This was just the book I needed to bring back the fun in historical romance. I haven't read the first three books in the series but did not feel that I missed anything (I will go back and read the others soon). Though the book doesn't lean heavily on historical facts, the atmosphere and culture of Victorian society was delightfully portrayed. Meg was absolutely adorable and lovable - her stutter, self-deprecating humor, keen intelligence, and peace-loving heart made her an excellent heroine. It was easy to see why Ivo would fall in love with her. Ivo - the gallant, worldly, and future-minded gentleman - was fun to get to know. The star-crossed lovers theme was well-played in the plot and seeing Meg and Ivo mature was gratifying. If you enjoy tender Victorian romance, this book is definitely for you. With Every Memory

This is my favorite Janine Rosche novel to date. It addresses devastating loss, grief, and heartache but overflows with hope, forgiveness, and redemption. Sin and consequences bring regret and shame yet unconditional love triumphs over the ugliest of human actions and emotions. Told from Lori and Avery’s first person viewpoints, the narrative is raw, heart-breaking, emotional, and real. The dialogue, especially between Avery and Xander, is witty and brings humor to the story. Lori is lovable from the start as she wanders through her slow progress of reclaiming memories to recapture who she was before the accident. There are plenty of secrets and surprises in her journey of self-discovery, which had my mouth hanging open. I had mixed feelings about Michael her husband at the beginning but ended up admiring him in the end. Avery, Lori’s daughter, is feisty, smart, and passionate but weighed down by guilt, rebellion, and angst. I loved loved Xander and his patient, tender kindness and love for Avery. The accident cost Lori, Michael, and Avery much but allowed them to see their self-imposed prison of selfishness and harm to seek a better way. If you’re a fan of stirring women’s fiction, this book is for you. I received the book from Revell via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

This was my introduction to Ashley Bustamante's writing and I am hooked! Even without having read the first book in the series, I was able to jump right into Ava's story. Her first person present tense voice is fresh, real, raw, and endearing. Though fraught with mishaps, misunderstandings, heartaches, and betrayals, Ava and her friends' adventure is incredibly satisfying and purpose-filled. Just an FYI - it does end on a cliffhanger. I thought this series was a duology when I picked up the book, so I was a little surprised at the ending....but this means more of Ava and Elm and the mighty warriors seeking justice, peace, and freedom so I can't complain! I loved entering Magus and its color-coded magical world filled with painful past and secrets. Ava was an exceptional heroine - vulnerable yet strong, tender and compassionate yet stubborn, solitary yet craving companionship. And Elm - he was the perfect combination of the alpha and beta hero with powerful, commanding, and brilliant presence but also humble, sweet, and generous. The secondary characters added depth and layer to the storyline and I can't wait to see what comes next for this ragtag group of friends and comrades in arms. Filled with wonder, adrenaline, intrigue, and suspense with a dash of romance thrown in, Radiant is a must-read for all YA fantasy fans. Counterfeit Faith

This is the first book I've read by Crystal Caudill and it was an exciting adventure through streets of Philadelphia in 1885. I learned quite a bit about the Secret Service during the mid 1880s and about Houses of Refuge for delinquent and neglected minors in this city. The intrigue and suspense in the plot were engaging and definitely kept me on my toes trying to figure out the nefarious connection among the minor characters. The strong faith thread of forgiveness, reconciliation, working through doubt, and waiting for God's timing infused the heart of the story. If you enjoy historical romantic suspense, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. Gwendolyn was a strong heroine - a bit too stubborn for me to completely empathize with but nonetheless passionate, compassionate, and wholly dedicated to the children she guards. Josiah was a fun, protective, loyal, tender-hearted champion for the underdogs and easy to like. I didn't quite understand his Kryptonite of reluctantly proposing to damsels in distress and having to break those proposals but his hurting widowed heart was genuine. The green goods game that played a major role in the plot was a little confusing at first but it tied in nicely at the end. I appreciated the historical notes at the end of the book summarizing the facts that contributed to the plotline. A Cry in the Dark

This is the first book I've read by Jessica R Patch and I am delighted to have finally made my acquaintance with her writing. I've heard much about her gripping romantic suspense and she did not disappoint. The fast-paced, nail-biting suspense component is perfectly combined with romance and a strong faith thread. The villain's point of view adds another intricate layer to the well-formed, complex plot and throws quite a few curveballs when trying to identify the culprit. It's a book you won't be able to put down until the very last page is read. I loved John's solid, loyal, and tender heart that is rooted in faith and God's Word. His unwavering commitment to help and understand Violet was absolutely heroic. Violet, in her straight-forward and non-apologetic manner, was surprisingly easy to connect with and love. Their banter was quite delightful and added a touch of humor to the murder investigations that ran dark at times. There are some heavy topics in the book, like trafficking, mental illness, and a twisted version of religion and goodness, but true faith, redemption, and reconciliation shed light on these heavy topics and bring healing and closure. The Best Summer of Our Lives
by

MJSH
, May 12, 2023
Rachel Hauck has woven a beautifully nostalgic and redemptive story of four childhood-to-high school best friends from the summer of 1977 to 'present day' of 1997. Their conversations and interactions are authentic and real. How they come together to create a summer camp experience for younger girls is fabulous yet secrets abound that affect the four friends' lives permanently. Filled with heart-warming events, shocking secrets and their consequences, heartbreak and grief and regrets, and supernatural encounters, this book is a good summer read and will make you reminisce about your own friendships of old. Having been a part of four-best friends-square in high school myself, I totally empathized with the dynamics of their friendship. It was somewhat difficult to keep the four friends straight in the beginning, especially with the shifts from 1997 to 1977 and each chapter centering on one time period and one girl. I couldn't keep straight their individual personalities and backstories until about 60% into the story. I had a hard time fully connecting with Summer, the main character of the book. Her 1977 eighteen-year-old self was rebellious, selfish, insecure, and obnoxious while her 1997 version was pitiful and still selfish. To Free the Stars

I had thought J'nell Ciesielski's finest work was The Brilliance of Stars when Jack and Ivy were introduced....but To Free the Stars has completely and utterly outpaced and out-romanced the first book. The opening scene of this book is a direct continuation of the first book and goes from 0 to 60mph in the first few pages. It covers every emotion possible - despair, grief, anger, jealousy, hope, loyalty, mercy, and love. Action, suspense, and romance are perfectly blended for a thrilling adventure. Mix together Jason Bourne, Mission Impossible, and Captain America/Winter Solider into 1927 international political backdrop and you have this fabulous novel. Jack's journey is heart-breaking and raw; he seems a different man from the one we met in the first book. Ivy's desperate and unrelenting love for him is also heart-wrenching and raw as she fights to hold onto who they were. There are a lot of flashbacks to their lovely, delicious, tender romance and a good portion of the book is dedicated to Jack and Ivy finding a new rhythm. To Free the Stars will have you crying tears of empathy, clutching the edge of your seat in anticipation, sighing at the romance of it all, and cheering for Talon as good battles evil and love disarms betrayal. One of my favorite reads of 2023! I received the book from Thomas Nelson via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

This is my first book by Kimberley Woodhouse and I was drawn to it by the premise of the plot. I was also curious about how a well-established historical romance author would handle contemporary romantic suspense. It was a different read - though there were some technical aspects that this non-techy reader couldn't quite grasp, I didn't feel lost while reading the book. The plot was intricately laid out and the ending was definitely a surprise. Faith and returning to God's love were strong subplots in the main characters' journeys. Jason was an imperfect hero, making tons of mistakes personally and professionally, but he was relatable in his imperfections and frustrations. Darcie was a bit more difficult to connect with; though the reader does get her full story of past rejections and hurts that shaped her personality, it was harder to feel empathy for Darcie than for Jason. The suspense component was riveting and the villain had me guessing at motives and identity all throughout the book. This book sets up for the rest of the series and it promises to be an intriguing ride. Karen Witemeyer is off to a great start with this book as the first in her new series. It reminded me a little of Snow White, but I'm not sure if the author meant to do that even if the last name is Snow. It was fascinating to learn about how the theater world operated in 1890s, especially in the midwest and south. Karen Witemeyer has a gift of placing the reader right into the pages of her story and I felt like a part of the traveling troupe and then the Diamond D Ranch alongside Penelope. Penelope's sweet, kind, and helpful spirit was easy to love. Titus was a bit prickly in the beginning but his unswerving loyalty, tenderness, and sense of duty and justice won me over quickly. Their faith journeys were real with plenty of take-away lessons. Their romance was slow, sweet, and quite lovely. The secondary characters were equally remarkable and the villain was quite devious, which added depth to the plot. If you enjoy historical romance, you will definitely enjoy this book. Happy Life of Isadora Bentley

This book was exactly what I needed to get over the brief reading slump I had entered. Such a fun, fun book! When I first started reading, I had to do a double-take to remind myself that I was reading a Courtney Walsh novel. I’ve read a handful of her books and loved them but this fresh, laugh-out-loud, poignant romantic comedy is different from her previous books. And I absolutely loved it from the beginning to end! Isadora's delightfully quirky, witty, hilarious, honest, and self-deprecating first person voice will charm you and make you cry all sorts of tears - tears from hysterical laughter and tears of empathy, sadness, pain, self-realization, and (of course) happiness and worth. There isn't a faith thread in the story but it is a clean read. Isadora is unforgettable. Though an introvert in a self-imposed isolation, she braves the outside world for the sake of research and discovers more than what she bargained or hoped for. The eclectic group of friends she collects is as unforgettable as Isadora. And Cal.... I loved his gentle but unrelenting pursuit of Isadora. His tender heart, passion for the human connection, and enchanting whimsical ways made him perfect for Isadora. This is one of the best rom-coms I've read. In Feast or Famine A Novel

This book is very different from the other biblical fiction I've read centered around Joseph. It's largely a fascinating look at Egyptian culture and its political climate during Joseph's imprisonment through his reunion with his family during the famine. Betrayal and deception lie in wait at every turn but Elohim's love and grace triumph over man's evil and scheming. I've often wondered about Asenath, how and why Joseph would have married the daughter of an Egyptian god's priest, and Joseph's confusing reaction to his brothers when they come to buy grain. Mesu Andrews weaves an enchanting and captivating story to address these wonderings and so much more. Told in Asenath's first person narrative as well as Joseph and Potiphera's third person voices, the book will draw you in from the first page and leave you pondering about God's incredible love and what true forgiveness means. The premise of the first book was fascinating and innovative but Gabrielle Meyer takes it up a notch in this sequel. Maggie lives not just two lives but three during three different time periods. In 1861, she is Margaret, the daughter of a Senator. In 1941, she is Maggie, a Naval nurse, granddaughter of a Congressman, and daughter of two time-crossers. In 2001, she is Meg, a medical student and daughter of the President's social secretary. Each time period has a war looming and the political activity and environment at our capitol during these time periods is fascinating. I loved seeing the changes in Washington DC and The White House through Maggie's eyes. It's truly amazing how the author writes so clearly and reveals each subplot so coherently that there is no confusion as the reader moves through the time periods with Maggie every chapter. The first person narrative is fresh, honest, raw, and true to a twenty year old struggling with the biggest decision of her life. And those plot twists! There are quite a few so be prepared for some jaw drops and going back several pages to make sure you read the words correctly. The faith lesson of learning to let go and leaving God in control is a good reminder for all of us. What a fun journey this has been! Will there be a third book in the series? I sure hope so. I really enjoyed coming back to Haven Ridge to meet Gemma and Stephen. Thomas and Mallory from the prequel novella make fun cameo appearances in this book. I loved the setting of Haven Ridge nestled in the mountains of Colorado and fell in love all over again with the charming town and its occupants. Gemma and Stephen have a world of hurt between them from their past but when forced into close proximity with the welfare of a teenager and the town on their shoulders, they fall into an easy natural rhythm only found with those who know each other intimately. They fall in love again pretty quickly and their romance sizzles throughout the book. There isn't necessarily a faith thread here but there is some magical realism concerning the town of Haven Ridge that's kind of fun. Gemma's passion for her work as family lawyer and Stephen's passion for his work in teaching literature add depth and dimension to who they are. I can't wait to read Liv's story next! There is more action, more romance, and more "international plots and spy novels"-like things happening in this book than the first book of the series (and that's saying a lot!). It's an intense thrill-ride from the opening scene to the very last. And, yes, there will be moments when you'll forget to breathe or your shocked gasps will scare those around you. I don't know how Susan May Warren does it, but every one of her novels is spell-binding and Jonas is a prime example of the author's incredible creativity and writing prowess. Jonas, the storm chaser turned weatherman, is haunted by past tragedy and circumstances. Though regret and fear cloud his judgment, his protective and justice-seeking Marshall heart makes him a wonderful hero who races into danger to do the right thing. Learning about computerized weather balloons and nuclear warfare was fascinating. I loved getting to know Sibba with her tough, logical bomb-disassembling mind and soft, loyal heart. Jonas' younger brother Ned and his fiancee Shae also have a subplot in this book and I am totally loving the connection between this series and The Montana Rescue series. Cameo appearances from characters in Global Search and Rescue series and from Caleb Group are quite special and fun. I can't wait to see where Ned will take us next. Jonas is completely and delightfully captivating! I received the book from the author/publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

It's been a couple of weeks since I finished this incredible finale to the space opera saga and yet I'm still stunned and speechless. This book is the epitome of an epic finale. It's all-consuming and all-encompassing. It will completely and devastatingly engage all of your senses, your heart, mind, and spirit as it showers you with every emotion known to mankind. This is a series that needs to be read in order and I suggest you read all four books without interruption. Once you encounter Marco and his world, there is no going back. Ronie Kendig writes brilliant action books and the final war that weaves four subplots with different sets of characters shows how truly brilliant the author is. Marco is much changed and leads the war on Drosero with anger and bitterness. Admiral Deken secretly protects Drosero from the atmosphere while Tigo and Jez work on different planets and Reef and Eija fight to destroy the enemy's soldiers. There are many surprising revelations, heart-wrenching sacrifices, and shocking betrayals as good struggles against evil. I shed many tears reading this book and it was worth every one. Melissa Ferguson knows how to write rom-coms. I found myself crying through the book - one minute from laughing so hard and the next minute clutching my heart in sympathy. The author made the wintery landscape of Montana mountains so real with its beauty, hidden dangers, and below freezing temperatures. The camaraderie and ridiculous fun found amongst the park rangers and the townspeople of Kannery are addictive. Though narrated in first person present tense by Cat, we get to know Zaiah pretty well through their interactions. And Zaiah is definitely a worthy hero. The supporting cast of Uncle Terry, Mina, Jax, Kevin, Peggy, and Mark is awesome and I’m hoping for a sequel about Mark. And, of course, we can’t forget Serena, Cat’s best friend, who is a little scary and over-the-top but so necessary in pulling the entire story together. I really enjoyed the story but unfortunately didn’t gel with Cat. I think I’m too old to fully understand an influencer’s life. Her stream of consciousness narrative lost me more than once during the story but her innate desire to help people really came through in her actions. She does have moments of epiphany, which help her realize what’s truly important. It’s a fun clean romance (no faith threads in the story) to enjoy on a blustery Saturday morning with a steaming cup of coffee. It's been a while since I've indulged in a Julie Klassen book and I'm so happy that I did. This book starts a new series on the Devonshire Shores and I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to this 1819 coastal town of Sidmouth. I learned a good deal about the trending medical theories on benefits of sea-bathing and how it was actually done. There are many characters to sort through since it is the first book of the series but the characters were all unique and felt like long-time friends by the end of the book. The four Summers sisters are truly delightful. Sarah, Emily, Viola, and Georgiana are very different yet connected by sisterly love and loyalty. Sarah's commitment to family and Georgiana's tender sweetness were heart-warming. Emily's disappointments and Viola's bitterness and angst were heart-breaking but their triumph over these obstacles was gratifying. I loved getting to know the Henshall family and the Hutton family and hope to see more of them in future books of the series. Of course, as in most Regency novels, there is a swirl of secrets and a natural disaster of sorts; these plot twists work to bring the sisters, guests, and townspeople closer together. The guests at Sea View are quite entertaining and you'll feel like you've gone on a holiday by the sea as you mingle with this eclectic group. Blind Trust

Lyla and Garcia's story was totally worth the wait. We already knew there was romantic tension between the two of them from the previous books but their story is so much more than romantic tension, clever barbs, and witty dialogue. A surprising and fascinating backstory is the foundation of intricately detailed and gripping suspense - when all the pieces are finally revealed, you will be completely blown away. Even if you didn't read the prequel novella Initium (which I didn't prior to reading this book), you will still be able to fully appreciate the beauty of the story. If you did read Initium, then you'll have a head start on understanding the plot here. I enjoyed getting to know Lyla underneath her snark and political connections. Her vulnerability, drive to prove herself, and family dynamics added great layers to her character. Garcia's past that prevents him from pursuing Lyla was fleshed out and his integrity, loyalty, and thoughtfulness made him an unforgettable hero. Director Tom Walsh also had a voice, which added dimensions to the plot. With nail-biting suspense, fantastic plot twists, lovable characters, strong faith thread, and crackling romantic tension, Blind Trust is the perfect ending to a wonderful series. Kudos to Natalie Walters! I received the book from the author/publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Novel Proposal

It's another fun novel by Denise Hunter. The writing is easy to read, the characters are lovable, the plot and premise are delightful, and faith lessons are applicable. It has a bit more rom-com feel to the book than I am used to from the author but it worked really well. Each chapter has a "how to write a romance novel" topic leading into Sam and Sadie's story, which was clever. Sam is a wonderful and slightly grumpy hero who is loyal, thoughtful, and tender. His love for his family is heart-warming as is his soul and faith journey that allows him to forgive and love fully. Sadie is an adorable heroine, full of energy, creativity, light and bubbly goodness. She also has need for healing from her past and Sam helps her overcome her fears. Throw into this enchanting friends-to-more love story a misplaced engagement ring, a Little Free Library, and a gorgeous island setting, and you have the perfect beach read. The Vanishing at Castle Moreau

, March 15, 2023
Jaime Jo Wright's beautiful craftmanship never fails to amaze me. She has a magical touch that seamlessly weaves threads of Gothic suspense with faith and just the right amount of romance to create a stunning tapestry of redemption and belonging. Fear and grief play big roles in the plot but truth, kindness, steadfast love, purpose and faith overcome the hopelessness that lingers in fear and regret. Dual timeline that alternates between 1870 and present time, with interjections from 1801, is cleverly and masterfully stitched together without any gaps or confusion. Cleo and Deacon from the present time are such a delightful match. Though they come from very different backgrounds, they share grief, addictions, regrets, loyalty, and faith. Daisy and Lincoln mirror their present time counterparts in 1870 - they are the forgotten ones, deemed useless by society yet so capable of love and longing for acceptance and purpose. And then there is the grandmother who writes horror fiction, the grandmother who hoards everything, the wandering phantom woman, and battles against grief and alcohol and human depravity that add deep layers to the characters and plot. It's a Jaime Jo Wright book you don't want to miss. I received the book from Bethany House via Interviews and Reviews and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Words We Lost

I've been a fan of Nicole Deese's writing for some time now, but every time I read a new book from this fabulous author, I'm astounded all over again how beautifully she weaves raw, aching human emotions into a masterpiece. The magic she wields with her written words is beyond descriptors and I loved the contrast between Ingrid's first-person, present tense narrative and Cece's third-person, past tense journey of their friendship. The author stitches overwhelming grief, guilt, regret, anger, hopelessness, and despair alongside loyalty, undying friendship, faith, love, hope, and second chance to create an unforgettable quilt of forgiveness and redemption. It's a must-read for all women's fiction and contemporary romance fans everywhere. Ingrid was an easy heroine to love, even in her utterly broken state. And Joel.....he's a completely sigh-worthy hero. Though he doesn't have a voice in the storyline, his loyal, steadfast, compassionate heart shone clearly through his actions. And Cece is a mighty force in both of their lives, even if we don't actually get to meet her. This book definitely goes in my Top 20 reads of 2023 list. This may be my favorite Jocelyn Green book to date! I absolutely adored being in 1925 New York City and seeing the city through the eyes of history. The plot was complex and engaging, with a rousing mystery regarding forgeries and stolen guns, corruption, and bribery during the era of Prohibition. There was a sweet, slow-burn romance between Joe and Lauren who shared a history, a thirst for justice, and love for art. A strong faith thread highlighting the all-encompassing love of our Heavenly Father surrounded the characters as themes of acceptance and finding home were explored. Historical details like the emergence of Egyptology as science and art as well as the structuring of the Egyptian artifacts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art were absolutely fascinating. Joe and Lauren, though they seem worlds apart as an NYPD detective and PhD in Egyptology, were truly a perfect couple. There are some surprises along the way as Joe and Lauren chase down Egyptian forgeries and you won't be able to put down the book when the intrigue picks up speed. It's a wonderful combination of history, mystery, suspense, faith, and romance. I received the book from Baker Publishing Group via Interviews and Reviews and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Zane and Tessa have had great chemistry and friendship throughout the series and I am so happy that they have their own adrenaline-fueled, romance-laced story to conclude this fantastic series about Raleigh Secret Service agents. The plot is fascinating and even though we hear the villain's voice in the story, we don't actually see the clues coming together until the very end. Zane is still very much part of the Raleigh office though he's now in DC protecting the president. The solid bond of brotherhood among Zane, Luke, Gil, and Benjamin is enviable and I loved their protective love of each other and their families. I've always liked Zane but his tender, romantic, patient heart totally swept me away in this book. Tessa is fierce and no-nonsense and a great Secret Service Agent. Zane and Tessa have painful pasts that prevent them from fully trusting each other with their hearts but their friendship and sizzling attraction are delightful. I loved catching up with Luke and Faith, Gil and Ivy, and Benjamin and Sharon from this office and Adam and Sabrina from the Carrington Sheriff Office from the author's previous series. It's an excellent conclusion to Defend and Protect series that you won't want to miss. I received the book from the publisher via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. It's another delightful adventure with Freddie and Grace. I loved their rhythm, energy, and compatibility as a married couple though they are polar opposites. Their love is tender, passionate, and all-consuming and it gives both of them such solid ground to stand on. Of course, Grace and her propensity to fall into trouble gets them into mystery and mayhem in Egypt this time. Seeing Egypt of 1914 through Grace's insatiably curious eyes was a definite treat. Freddie's long-suffering love for Grace was extremely sweet and made him more swoon-worthy (is that even possible?). Freddie's valet Elliott has a subplot in this story which was absolutely fabulous. Filled with suspicious secondary characters, mysterious deaths, curious happenings, and unresolved thefts, this book cleverly and wonderfully merges Clue with Indiana Jones to create an enchanting historical fiction with a serving of comedy and intrigue. The theme of redemption and forgiveness of the past was strong throughout the story. If you've ever wanted to travel to Egypt and visit the pyramids and an archeological excavation site, this is the book for you! What an epic follow up to Wolf Soldier! The missions, battles, and faith component are bigger and brighter in this sequel, as the six Lightraider cadets continue in their fight for truth and freedom. I appreciated each cadet's unique third person voices - Connor with his discernment and leadership skills, Kara with her loyal and selfless spirit, Lee with his encouraging healing ways, Teegan and her gentle bond with animals, Tiran and his creative knowledgeable mind, and Dag with his strength and bravery. We also get a glimpse of the villain dragon's voice, as well as Aaron the watchman's voice and first person present tense voice of a prisoner whose identity is revealed further along in the story. The melding of physical and spiritual worlds, particularly in warfare, is fascinating. The allegory is powerful but the author does ask the reader not to get bogged down in allegory so read the author's note at the end (it also asks the reader to keep two other things in mind after finishing the book). The themes of forgiveness, salvation, and true redemption are strong throughout the book. It gave me Lord of the Rings movie vibe and I would love to see this series made into movies! Another fun historical romcom from the queen of the genre! Jen Turano has a way with words to make every moment of her books engaging and delightful, oftentimes with scenes that will make you burst out laughing. I thoroughly enjoyed the hours I spent in the company of 1888 Newport high society as advantageous matches were speculated and strategized. Gwendolyn, the reluctant but highly effective assistant matchmaker, is part Mary Poppins and part Julie Andrews' Maria von Trapp and equally as captivating. Her desire and efforts to make love matches for all her clients was refreshing and fun to watch. Walter is a widower with three young children, completely unschooled and unaware in the art of courtship and love. His spunky, intelligent, and charming children are the true heroes in the story and they work tirelessly to bring their father and Gwendolyn together. With witty and hysterical dialogue, lovely characters, and a beautiful setting, this newest book from Jen Turano will win you over quite quickly. What an incredible start to Susan May Warren's new Minnesota Marshalls series! I am totally enthralled that the author's books/series are weaving together to incorporate old and new characters in the continued search for a global villain. If you've never read the author's books, that's ok - you'll still love the action, adventure, suspense, romance, and faith that align perfectly in these pages. Fraser, the oldest of the Minnesota Marshalls, is a former soldier now working with private security company but wounded from his last job and haunted by failure, worthlessness, and restlessness. Pippa is a capable and straight-laced secret service security detail from Lauchtenland, guarding Princess Imani. Meeting of Fraser's youngest brother Creed and Princess Imani sparks an international intrigue and race for survival - and this brings Fraser and Pippa into close proximity as they use their abundant skills to find and protect their loved ones. Fraser is a worthy Susan May Warren hero - formidable, capable, funny, tender, and loyal. Pippa is an excellent partner and counterpart to Fraser with her matching capability and strength. Seeing my other favorite characters like Ziggy, Roy, Ham, Jake, and Aria was the icing on the cake. Daughter of Eden: Eve's Story
by
Jill Eileen Smith
MJSH
, February 11, 2023
Jill Eileen Smith has tackled a really difficult part of the Old Testament spanning from Genesis 1 through beginning of Genesis 6. This account starting from creation and ending with Methuselah told in multiple points of view is a fascinating look at the beginning of our faith. Eve is the major contributor to the plot and her guilt, shame, and desire for love and acceptance after the fall are so palpable. Adam, in his anger and frustration at the burden of caring for his family, is relatable. Their marriage shifts and matures during their long years on earth together and it's a very real picture of how God shapes and molds each man and woman individually and as a couple through the years. Other human voices build the plot and we get to meet Cain and his wife Hasia, Abel, Seth, and Enoch. We also hear Archangel Michael and Lucifer's thoughts, which makes for a richer experience as events on earth unfold. This is the most ambitious and creative Biblical fiction the author has penned to date and it made me re-read these Genesis chapters with a new appreciation. I had hoped for a longer author's note with explanations of her research and reasons for how she addressed the vague areas. Perhaps the author will have a blog post or a newsletter after the book's release to satisfy my curiosity. I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Another fabulous novel by Rachel Scott McDaniel! I loved how she's melded the glittering, intriguing, shadowy world of 1920s Pittsburgh with equally fascinating historic city of modern day. Each timeline is rich, complex, and filled with surprises while the characters are touchable, relatable, and oh so lovely. This delightful combination of history, mystery, romance, and faith needs to be on every fiction fan's to-read list. Sophie's first person voice from the 1920s is ambitious, lively, and friendly though a bit nostalgic and heart-broken. Sterling is a brooding hero, wanting to forget the past but stuck on his love for the woman who left him. Their paths intertwine as a jewel thief runs rampant in the city and investigation leads Sterling to the theater where she works. Elise's third person voice from the present time is quirky, witty, disillusioned, and fearful. I adored Pierson so much in this story. His tender heart, unwavering loyalty to those he holds dear, and persistent pursuit of Elise are swoon-worthy. How he works tirelessly to help Elise overcome stage fright and find her birth father makes him a knight in shining armor. Absolutely stunning dual timeline historical fiction. Once again, Roseanna M White masterfully and beautifully combines history, intrigue, romance, and faith to weave an unforgettable tale of secrets, loss, grief, strength, and love. The setting is lovely and the plot that takes us from the Outer Banks to England to France is riveting. Louisa and Rem from WWI stole my heart completely from the beginning. Their romance and steadfast love were delightful and heartbreaking at the same time. Evie and Sterling from WWII took their time to get to know each other and I truly enjoyed that journey. There were plenty of gasp-worthy surprises and plot twists to keep the book moving at a good pace. Revisiting Room 40 from The Codebreakers series was quite fun, as was cameo appearances by characters from the author's other books. It's a must read for all historical fiction fans. Liam's story was well-worth the wait. Beneath the tough, unschooled, impulsive exterior of a welder lies a tender, loyal heart of a gentleman who only wants acceptance, love, and good for the working class. Liam's tenacity, focused drive, and generosity make him an excellent hero though his flaws are constantly thrown in his face. His journey of finding himself and God is fraught with mishaps but his persistence and determination to overcome these setbacks are truly admirable. I loved getting to the heart of Liam with all of his broken pieces, self-awareness, and thirst for justice. Maggie is a worthy partner for Liam. Her hard-working, devoted, loving spirit matches him in bravery, intelligence, and fortitude. I loved how history of NYC was woven around Maggie's work and how vivid the world of steel and banking industries felt throughout the story. The author truly has a gift for elaborating on little known historical facts to create captivating and stunning historical fiction. It's an absolutely satisfying conclusion to The Blackstone Legacy! "Grief is not a thing to be measured. Only lived." How do I even begin to write a review for such a heartbreaking yet hope-infused story that reads like a diary? This is historical fiction at its finest, where real events meld seamlessly with fictional characters to challenge the readers emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It's not an easy read and the women's ghetto and concentration camp experiences will leave you raw and aching. But the author does a brilliant job of stitching each painful event with glimmers of hope and future. It's beautifully written, absolutely gripping, totally immersive, and emotionally charged to encompass every possible human feeling. It's one of the most powerful books I've read in a long time. Told through first person present tense narrative of Zosia and Hania, the readers are immediately transported to pre-war Poland and through the long, stark years of WWII as a handful of people try to help Hania and the people she loves. This book will move you and have you pondering what it means to be human long after the last chapter is read. “It’s a question I ask myself every day. If not us, who then will stand?” An absolute gem of a read! This book gripped my heart and mind from the first page and didn’t let go until the very last. It was my introduction to the author’s writing - I’ll be sure to read her backlist and be on the lookout for future novels. I am not an opera fan but loved being transported to that world on the cusp of WWII. The author made that environment come alive and the passion in opera came across beautifully. I loved both Elsa and Hattie - two strong heroines who risk all to rescue those in need. There are plenty of surprises in the plot which kept it moving at a good pace. Heartache, betrayal, loyalty, true friendship, and desperation to help those in need fill the pages of this book and it’ll surely become one of your favorites as well. My favorite Laura Frantz novel to date! I loved returning to Scotland through the author’s captivating storytelling and learned a great deal about the Jacobite Rising in 1715 through Blythe and Everard. Lush details of Scottish country life and swirling political unrest, unforgettable characters, heart-stopping romance, strong faith thread that overcomes denominational barrier, and gripping plot all make this book a worthy read and one of my favorites this year. Everard is a classic Laura Frantz hero - gruff but tender, loyal to the core, a fierce warrior and an innovative leader. Blythe is an educated intellectual, daughter of a duke, and compassionate. Their meeting is under distressing circumstances but their blossoming relationship is fun and witty and shows a side of them that others rarely see. I know the author doesn’t usually write sequels but I would love to see books that follow Everard’s younger brothers. If you enjoy historical romance that will transport you to a different time and place with action and depth, you will absolutely adore this book. "I have learned one cannot wait for the perfect moment to fulfill a dream. One must act despite all and embrace what the heart holds dear." I have always enjoyed Kate Breslin's books and the intense espionage and intrigue in them. Her newest absolutely fulfilled my expectation and more. Though this book connects quite a few characters from her previous books (in particular, "Not by Sight"), it can be read as a stand-alone. Brimming with intrigue, tender romance, heartache, and faith, the book will captivate and enthrall any reader who loves historical romance. Finally getting to see Captain Marcus Weatherford up close and personal was a pleasure. He's been a stalwart, faithful secondary character in the author's WWI books and I loved his character thoroughly, even if I didn't agree with some of his decisions. Clare was a lovable heroine, rising above her humiliation and thriving as a single mother and an orderly in a hospital. Learning about a military hospital run by an all-women staff during the war was quite fascinating. Marcus' amnesia allowed for a fresh restart to his relationship with Clare and gave the reader a glimpse into their fun, witty, tender, all-encompassing bond. It was interesting to see the events unfold through Natalya, Jack, and Fannie's eyes as well. And Fannie's delightful romance with Peter was an added bonus. I've loved all the books in the series but this is absolutely my favorite. Phil Osbourne snagged my attention in the first book when his world fell apart and his story was so worth the wait. His tremendous faith and strength to overcome his darkest days and fears make him an incredible hero. Despite his insecurity and grumpiness, Melissa loves Phil anyway and slowly draws him out of his cave with her persistent, bold, yet tender affection. There are some sensitive scenes in the book since Phil works in the medical field and Melissa works as a safehouse coordinator and counselor, but these add to the stark reality of how people suffer on a daily basis because of others' cruelty. The action and suspense in this book is different from the overseas combat in the first book and governmental work tracking down terrorists in the second book. Powerful drug cartels, women needing help and shelter, and two people's passion to protect those who are powerless make for some pretty intense suspense and action. I would recommend reading the series in order so that you can get the full flavor of who Phil is and how far he's come. I'm hoping for more books in the series! Mindy Obenhaus' books are a pleasure to read. Her characters are lovable, the plotline moves at a nice pace, and there is always a good faith thread woven into the story. Annalise was an admirable heroine, trying to step up from her perceived helplessness in life. She brought warmth, joy, and sunshine to a Christmas tree farm she inherited. I enjoyed learning about the workings of a Christmas tree farm though the book. Hawkins' tender heart and desire to help those in need made him an excellent hero, even if his bruised heart made him grumpy at times. Their journey of trust of each other and God was a worthwhile one to witness. And sweet little Olivia! I loved her interactions with Hawkins and his family. Once Upon a Winter Wonderland: A Deep Haven Christmas Anthology

This is the best Christmas anthology I have read this season. So much fun! I loved how the four stories tie into the big overarching theme of Vivien and Boone's epic Christmas wedding. In the midst of a crazy snowstorm, a missing Mustang, an accidental fire, and a terrible misunderstanding, these authors bring to life an unforgettable wedding celebration in the unforgettable town of Deep Haven. In "A Beautiful Sight", Vivien and Boone learn what it truly means to trust each other and be all in, despite flaws and imperfections. This story digs deeper into what it means to pledge one's life to another while in the throes of heady love - it compliments the last story "Sleigh Bells Ring" where Bob and Marilyn, Stella's parents, relearn what it means to be committed and all in after more than 40 years of marriage and ministry. I loved Duke and Zuri's love story in "We're Happy Tonight" and how Zuri's true beauty turned Duke's grinch-like heart into soft malleable one. "Snow is Glistening" finally has Romeo finding his perfect match in Stella - where sense of abandonment, inadequacy, and fear of disappointing others melt away as they learn to help each other. It's a must-read for this Christmas season. I received the book from the publisher via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Even if you aren't a fan of epistolary writing, you will absolutely love this book. Full of fantastic humor, laugh-out-loud moments, tender vulnerability, amazing characters, and real-life faith, the book will capture your heart. Throw in tons of book and movie references and delicious banter and you have a perfect romcom to curl up with on a cold afternoon. I love Pepper Basham's books and this one is her best romantic comedy yet (which is saying A LOT)! It's amazing how the plot flows and we get to know the characters so well through written email and text exchanges. Izzy's relationship with her cousins is enviable but she does harbor deep insecurities and doubts that only surface towards the end. Her creativity, authenticity, and love for others are so refreshing and genuine. And Brodie.... he's a keeper! His awkwardness, bookish nerdiness, soul-deep passion and commitment to family and legacy and dreams, and tender and astute love for Izzy are endearing and make him the perfect hero. Izzy and Brodie's story had me grinning from ear to ear the whole time, with tears of sympathy and joy interspersed. And we so desperately need Luke and Anders and Brynna's stories soon.....and I can't wait to read Penelope's own happily-ever-after. "Faithfulness and loyalty are the true powers. They strengthen the individual and the whole community." It's another winner from Sharon Hinck. Jolan's journey is inspired by Joseph's journey in the book of Genesis, so it's somewhat of a reimagining of Joseph's tale. Filled with betrayal, loss, grief, and faith, this book of hope and purpose, set in a realistic fantasy world, will engage your heart, mind, and spirit. You won't be able to put it down once you start! Jolan's first person voice is refreshing, honest, and delightful. Though it's told only in first person, we get to know other characters pretty well throughout the story. I really enjoyed getting to know King Siverlon and Kamor. Kamor's steadfast loyal heart won me over from the beginning; his relationship with Jolan was a beautiful thing to witness as enemies became friends to something more. The theme of being faithful where planted showed clearly through Kamor's life and was an excellent reminder to choose contentment, faithful service, and complete dependence on the One who is everything. It doesn't look like this book is a part of a series but I'd love to have a follow up book (or two) about the fate of the four kingdoms in the story. "Endure in the fire, because God's love for you endures. Trust in his plans for you. let him give you the strength to bear the flames." It's an unforgettable tale of grief, loss, forgiveness, redemption, purpose, and faith. It teaches us what it means to endure. Tessa Afshar brings us into the world of Babylon during Nebuchadnezzar's reign, full of incredible sights, sounds, tastes, smells. The author has chosen a surprising and unusual heroine for this time - a poor Jewish girl who is a gifted scribe. Keren becomes a quasi-servant in Daniel's household and it's delightful to see the author's fantastic imagination of what Daniel must have been like meld so beautifully with Biblical wisdom and prophecy, and history and culture of Babylon. Keren's strength of character, boldness, intelligence, and loyalty make her a lovable character. Jared's bitterness and struggle for purpose and forgiveness are so real and tangible. There are plenty of plot twists that propel the story forward; even though this is not a suspense, you'll be glued to your seat with your breath held as Keren's journey unfolds. Tessa Afshar is truly a master of Biblical fiction. This is one of my favorite reads of 2022! I received the book from the publisher via Edelweiss/Above the Tree Line and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
