The Deadly Shallows

Dani Pettrey

It was great re-connecting with the team in this third book in the Coastal Guardian series. As usual, Ms Pettrey starts out with a highly toxic situation when a mass shooting disrupts a graduation on base. It only ramps up from there. It was non-stop action with the team going in several directions at once and wondering if all the clues were connected in some way. This time there are two couples that we follow on their romantic journey: Austin, head of her own detective agency and Caleb, a CGIS agent. Their banter was classic and fun. And Noah, a leader at CGIS and Brooke a Coastguard flight medic. These tense situations bring out the hero in Noah but he has some issues to work through before he can declare himself to Brooke. I like that there is a large group who are connected by faith and friendship and that they are almost like family. A suspenseful follow up to the first two books and makes me want to go back and reread them. Ms. Pettrey is a master at Romantic Suspense. I look forward to her next book. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Reviewers group. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*

Deception

Patricia Bradley
Polly
, August 03, 2022
“To hold on to unforgiveness is like a cancer to your soul.” Patricia Bradley has penned another outstanding offering in her Natchez Trace Park Rangers series. Madison has so many questions plaguing her when she goes back to Natchez to work on a cyber crime investigation. Things go from bad to worse when she gets stopped for speeding along the Trace by childhood friend Clayton, a fellow Park Service Ranger. When they are paired to look into a recent shooting, things get decidedly more complicated. The excitement does not let up as this layered story unfolds. And just when all seems be resolved, another twist comes into play. Although flawed, Clayton is a charming hero, but he knows Christ can help him overcome his difficulties. He gives solid support to his friends and family. Madison is a bit shaky in her faith, for she has been through a lot in her life and keeps getting thrown surprises. She gains strength from her grandfather and friendship from his godly housekeeper. And they both learn that forgiveness can be healing. If you are looking for an intricate plot, lots of thrills and a pinch of romance, try this book on for size. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell on behalf of the author. Crossfire

Lynette Eason

Intense drama as hostage negotiator Julianna comes up against her past and she is not the only one in danger. The author paints a realistic picture of what a negotiator goes through. Julie is proud of her record of no hostages lost ... until one criminal makes it personal. This story will have you turning page after page in anticipation and giving you whiplash with unexpected twists and turns. And just when you think it is over- Wham! Another twist! Ms. Eason comes up with the best characters, so noble and capable and vulnerable, too. Hero Clay Fox, former Army Ranger, is a role model to teens at a high school. It was interesting to see him organize an event to expose teens to various law enforcement careers. The faith element is consistent throughout with Julie and friends established as Christians, while some characters are portrayed as struggling in their faith. I like the way Julie and Clay connect, as well as the friendship that grows between their sisters. They each have their group of caring friends and colleagues. This injects some humor into an otherwise fierce situation. I have been a long time fan of Lynette Eason and this book solidifies my assessment. She writes non-stop exciting, well written and well researched suspense. * A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell through Interviews and Reviews. Colleen Coble has been a long time favorite of mine. I am glad to see this new Annie Pederson book that takes me back to Rock Harbor in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I remember visiting there when I lived in Northern Wisconsin. The descriptions of the ruggedly beautiful places brought back memories. The story was so intriguing and engaged me from page one. Annie, a widow with an eight year old daughter, was multi-layered with trauma in her past that comes to the forefront. A mystery to solve, Annie gets some unexpected surprises. Her once boyfriend, Jon, is back fixing up his old cabin and things get interesting, with multiple threads to follow. The way Ms. Coble portrayed eight year old Kylie was very realistic, depicting a hurting child who had lost her father and was not trusting of Jon. She did a good job of showing a caring mother who had her hands quite full and a concerned hero who only wanted the best for Annie. It was good to see characters from the previous series, which is one of my all time favorites. The pace was quick and kept me on my toes with the many suspects, danger lurking and even a storm on the lake. Very exciting. *i received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through PICT tours. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*

*Sometimes sentimentality is more important than practicality-at least to the heart.* This was an exquisite story of investing in what is important for future generations: friendships, faith, preservation and leaving a legacy for those who come after. It was a nostalgic trip for me because I connected with the times and attitudes of the 50s, as well as having friends of many ethnic groups and a mother who not only grew up in China as a missionary kid, but went on to teach mentally handicapped kids. A dual time story of friendship told in a beautiful way. Helen and Eunhee forged a friendship out of need. * A soft heart makes a soft nest, and love and honest talk make good friends.* And Grace and Cassidy carried on that legacy on the farm that Helen started. * It kind of reminds me of Queen Esther. She was born for her time and for her challenges. So were our grandmothers. We are born for our time and for our challenges.* We can lean many lessons from this touching story.* Rich or poor, we each have the opportunity to invest whatever we have been given.* * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale on behalf of the author. The Apostle's Sister

What a wonderful story set in Bible times. The author takes us on a journey with Paul and his sister from Tarsus where they were born to Jerusalem. Not only a richly atmospheric tale but also documenting their faith journey using existing scriptures and filling in with very plausible scenarios. I felt like I was right there with them. Ms. Hunt is very adept at bringing the scriptures to life and connecting the Old Testament with the New, putting the words of the Bible into the mouths of the characters. She gives a glimpse of what life was like in Jerusalem around the time of Jesus ministry, death and resurrection, the conversion of Saul and many others. Interesting to me was the description of Saul and his education and installation into the Sanhedrin and the Jewish traditions and culture of the times. I recommend this for all who enjoy Biblical Fiction and a well-written story about early Christian faith. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through their review program. The Secret Between Them: An Uplifting Inspirational Romance

“But love grows- it doesn’t divide.” It is great to be back in this quaint little town and see all my favorite characters. Now Harper has joined the group when she finds out she has inherited something from her grandfather. She meets lawyer, Joel, but does not quite mesh with him at first. All she really wants to do is find out who her birth father is. The characters are so real that you want to be their friends and live in this picturesque town. There is a cute little girl, daughter of Joel, a meddlesome grandmother type or two and a big beautiful peacock who gets rather possessive. The heart of the story is Harper longing to belong. With side issues of a child custody case the story is never dull. The characters are Christian for the most part so they seek God in all they do and ask for forgiveness when needed. “Let it go. Such a hard thing to do since he felt more in control when he could grip his worries tightly, but it was necessary to empty his hands so God could use them as He wished.” Joel had a hard time trying not to be in control because he is a defender. This was a great series and I hate to see it end. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*

Beyond the Desert Sands

Beyond the Desert Sands takes place in New Mexico around the time it became a State. It can be read as a stand-alone. Ms. Peterson treats us to a romantic and colorful setting in Silver Veil, New Mexico and parts of California. She writes her heroine, Isabella, as a spoiled heiress who doesn’t realize how fortunate she really is. But this gives time for her to grow up and progress in her faith. There is a lot of emphasis on her parents and how their faith has shaped then resulting in generosity and offering second chances. Aaron, the hero, is well written with a compassionate and honest heart, who is not afraid to tell the hard truth. There are plenty of scenes when hard choices are to be made and mercy to be shown. Danger lurks in unexpected places against a backdrop of rugged mining country, Fans of a romantic story set in the old west will find a great story here. * A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House through Interviews and Reviews. A real nail biter! This was certainly an edge of your seat suspense. Full of cyber security, drones, hacking and a mysterious criminal from the past. The author also gave us the beautiful mountains of Montana, with its ravines and forests. The story ties up a few loose ends from the other books in the series as well as letting us catch up on previous characters. Mackenzie and Alex meet in Montana after a fleeting tour of the city in DC, never expecting to meet again. The romance progressed quickly but was built on mutual respect and a common faith. Mackenzie found herself in an impossible situation, hoping it would not put her job or her life in jeopardy. “She hoped to stay out of reach of the ghost from her past, present, and maybe her future.” And Alex, although he is supposed to be on a break, puts himself in a precarious place in order to help her. Hold on for real excitement and a great story pitting a cyber criminal against the good guys. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Revell Reads program on behalf of the author. A Feeling of Home
by
Susan Anne Mason
Polly
, July 04, 2022
In Toronto, 1944 the Bennington Place Maternity Home run by Ruth Bennington has secured its place as a haven for unwed mothers, with Dr. Mark Henshaw donating his services. In storms Isabelle Wardrop and demands he attend her dying mother. Things do not go well and her mother succumbs. On the heels of this devastating news, Isabelle and her sister, Marissa, lose more: their father dies, they lose their security and the only house they have ever known. The author takes her characters through some rough times and shows that with their faith in God, they can accept help and grow through their reduced circumstances. Ms. Mason crafts a heroine who is selfless and willing to do what it takes when life throws her multiple curves, even humbly accepting help. Mark, as the hero, has sacrificed much for his younger brother, but realizes that even though he would like to help the destitute, he is spreading himself thin. Then Mark and Isabelle are thrown another curve that has them banding together. I love the characters and how they weigh things in light of God’s word. Ms. Mason captures the emotions of unwed mothers and their life changing decisions. This was a glimpse into what life was like on the home front in Canada during WWII, the hardships and the joys. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. Inventions of the Heart

This second book of the series was a delight. Meanwhile... back at the ranch, things and marriages are being sorted out. Meanwhile... back on the mountain, the take-back of the lumber business has begun. Villainy abounds and this evil mastermind has tentacles everywhere. But the guys and gals have God on their side. “God always says what most needs saying before we even think to need it.” While all does not go smoothly, Zane and Caleb do all they can to fiercely protect their wives and their property. The threat of danger keeps all of them on their toes. The three Stiles sisters cannot keep from inventing, planning and organizing. They are my favorite characters, with their brains and wit. The romance, even though the marriages were rushed, is sweet and swoony. Even though not everything is resolved, there is another whole book to get that done and see Jilly wed. Ms. Connealy gives us some fascinating facts about waterwheels and engines in early California history. The story is sprinkled liberally with her characteristic humor. I cannot wait to see how the story ends and who gets to persuade Jilly into marriage. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. The Heart of the Mountains
by
Pepper Basham
Polly
, July 04, 2022
“Time had a strange way of stealing and giving, and there was not a way to predict which way it would go. Only God knew. And there was comfort in that.” Ms. Basham paints a beautiful picture of the Appalachian Mountains that she knows so well. She crafts her characters with a realism that makes you root for them. Cora Taylor has fled England and an unwanted arranged marriage to join her Uncle and brother but does not realize what she is getting into among the mountain families, not to mention the wildlife. But she finds a champion in Jeb McAdams. Told in a folksy way, the story is full of faith and life lessons, while not short on the excitement and danger. As always Ms. Basham gives us plenty of humorous relief along with a sweet romance. “Love certainly was worth being brave... with a little crazy thrown in.” Jeb has “itchy lips” toward Cora. But he was a man of integrity and promised to take care of his dead friend’s widow. He needed to seek God to find the answer of whether to honor Amos’s wish or venture into a new relationship with Cora. A favorite character was Granny Burcham with her quaint ways and knowledge of healing. I highly recommend this book along with the companion book Laurel’s Dream which features some of the same characters and gives a bit more background. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Among the Innocent

Leah Miller was Amish until her whole family was murdered and she escaped. The killer is back to taunt her ten years later. She is now a police woman in the same village in the Montana mountains. A new police chief, Dalton, has taken over the station, just as a new murders take place. This was a fast paced thriller of a story with many threads to untangle. The killer is creepily diabolical and uses innocent teen girls to terrorize Leah. As the threads come together, Dalton and Leah grow closer and depend on each other. Then find a surprising past connection. One special character was Marge, Leah’s adoptive mother who suffers with dementia. The author gave us some insight into the condition. Another clue could be what Marge cannot remember! If you want a page turner, give this one a try. It is well worth the reading. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Reads Program. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*

Hope Beyond the Waves
by
Heidi Chiavaroli

, June 20, 2022
Hope among tears. This story captured my interest with its tale of a leper colony in 1916. It showed that even when you think hope is gone: “Hope is often birthed in the midst of pain.” It is told through the eyes of Gertie, who lived through a terrible time with her sister, Atta. She is telling her granddaughter, Emily, in order to minister to her since Emily feels like an outcast. “Jesus sought out the poor, the ostracized and oppressed. The sick and downtrodden. The outcast. And they were always the first to respond to Him. His kingdom truly is an upside-down one, and I quit like that.” Both time lines kept my interest. I like to see the way history could be made relevant in the modern time line. As always, the author meshes the two stories to bring us spiritual truths such as redemption, forgiveness and hope. She shows how not every secret needs to be hidden away- it just might be able to help someone in their faith journey, if it is revealed. “God using weakness to display His Strength. Absurd.” Yes God uses even the weak. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Hope Creek Publishers on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. Long Way Home
by
Lynn Austin
Polly

I am so glad Ms. Austin wrote this heart wrenching story. She wanted to honor the soldiers who fought for our freedom and the many victims who suffered under Hitler during WWII. She did a superb job of portraying the struggles of Jimmy, who came home with severe battle fatigue. As a childhood neighbor, Jimmy encouraged Peggy and showed God’s love and she returned the favor when he came back home by enlisting his friends to visit him and write letters. Entwined in the story is the plight of a Jewish refugee, Gisela, and her family. Helping her find her relatives after the liberation of Europe is what gave Jimmy purpose after witnessing many horrors. “Compassion speaks all languages.” This is not an easy book to read but it is an important one. We must never forget and not take our freedom for granted. It was painful to watch the characters go through their trials, but it was wonderful to see them come out better in the end. “The only light we will ever have in this dark world comes from God. If we turn away from Him, we are left with darkness and despair.” I was overwhelmed, for in the last few pages were my favorite verses in Romans 8: Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale on behalf of the author. Free Fall
by
Nancy Mehl
Polly
, June 15, 2022
I devoured this book in just over a day! “Hope in God is a powerful thing. It is the bridge to faith.” This third book of the series is much more of a mental puzzle. The same team is together again, with Alex and Logan still trying to deny feelings for each other and both are progressing in their Christian walk. “God will give you beauty for ashes, Alex. But we have to give Him the ashes.” They start to unravel the case of a missing woman who resembles Alex, resulting in her capture. Ms. Mehl puts a twist on things when the setting is an abandoned amusement park and a villain who seems kind and keeps his victims alive. As the clues mount up, it is questionable if the team can get to the victims in time. We also see Logan with some health issues that make him unable to be fully involved, but he relies on God and prayer. I like the way the team works together, considering themselves a family. Ms. Mehl gives us suspense, danger and the convoluted mind of a criminal. As always, she gives hope in her stories. “The Bible was so clear. Evil comes to kill, steal and destroy, God gives life.” Do not miss this unusual and insightful tale from a highly capable author. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. Elysium Tide

Superb procedural. What a fantastically plotted suspense. This is my first novel by this author and I was drawn in from the first page. The setting was the Elysium Grand, a resort on Maui and I felt as if I were there. In fact the whole book played out in my head as a well-scripted movie. Overworked, neurosurgeon , Dr. Peter Chesterfield has landed on Maui for a medical conference that is more of a punishment than for information. He finds himself teaming with Maui detective Lisa Kealoha on a murder case. He is befriended by the resort doctor, Tu Iona, Tuna for short, who in my mind looked and acted a lot like Lieutenant Tanaka from the original Magnum PI. There was a lot of action and also thinking skills were put to use. The story showed the close ties of family. Some of the characters are Christians and that aspect was portrayed naturally. Peter is not yet a Christian but through the story he starts to question his mortality and sees Tuna and Lisa live out their faith. The villains were crafty and the real motives were not revealed until near the end. I did not figure out some things and was surprised. Peter and Lisa made a great team trying to stay one step ahead of the game. I hope this is not the last we see of these characters. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell through Interviews and Reviews. I was not required to give a favorable review. The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip
by

, June 09, 2022
“Authentic love is the greatest joy there is, but it requires a thousand little deaths to self.” A dual time book that takes a unique, sometimes irreverent look at death and dying through the eyes of feisty 79 year old Clara Kip. Set in a hospice care unit, the author description brought back memories of the retirement center that my parents were in. I have to say that Clara Kipp is a real corker and would have been a real joy to anyone in that situation. “Honey, I’m only dying, I’m not an invalid!” Aidyn Kelley, a rookie reporter, meets Clara when she is assigned to write her obituary. Aidyn gets so much more than she expected and learns lessons that God wanted to teach her through Clara, a staunch woman of God. The author brings many emotions to the front while telling the story of a woman who has had troubles but overcame with a living faith. Clara may see her life as inconsequential, but she knows God loves her: “Almost always the Lord has taught me more when I took the hard path with someone instead of the self-protective one.” A particularly poignant description is of Clara observing a sunrise and pouring her heart out in thanks to God. This is a profound story that caused me to examine my motives and spurred me to be mindful to thank God for many things in my life. I highly recommend this debut book to everyone. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell through Library Thing. I was not required to give a favorable review. Midnight's Budding Morrow

, June 09, 2022
Carolyn Miller writes Gothic Regency to a T. The voice of this book evokes an atmosphere right out of the era. She aptly depicts a wallflower of a girl who thinks she is almost invisible but ultimately, her good heart shines through. Add to that an arranged marriage to a sullen bad boy and troubles have just begun. Sarah tries to be a good wife but James still needs to prove himself a changed man. Sarah has a wavering faith and she is up against a lot of obstacles put up by the uncooperative servants and a grieving father-in-law, resulting in mis-communication and lots of doubt. “When we are in the depths of midnight’s pain and darkness, we cannot see that God is still working goodness for tomorrow. But He is, isn’t He? This book is one of hardships and learning to rely on God through it all. And Ms. Miller shows us hope and perseverance through faith, “What we have endured together has forged us closer.” I look forward to reading the next in the series. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel on behalf of the author. The Songs That Could Have Been
by
Amanda Wen
Polly
, June 09, 2022
Having loved the debut, Roots of Wood and Stone by Amanda Wen, I could not wait to see what she tackled in her second book, and tackled was right. Some hard subjects were handled well: views on race in the 50s, alcoholism, eating disorders and letting Christ control your life. The characters jump off the page and into your heart as they deal with life situations. This dual time story was heartbreaking at times: “They had made the right choice. The mature choice. The loving choice. But that didn’t mean it wouldn’t shatter her heart.” But also uplifting and filled with hope: “God had a plan, even man’s stupidity could not thwart that plan... it is never too late for God. Nothing is too far gone for Him to redeem it.” The book was not at all depressing. It was rounded out nicely throughout. Because Lauren is a food blogger, I liked that she named her cats Alton and Nigella! I also caught the weather related references since Carter was a weatherman. This book was every bit as good as the first and gave me more of a glimpse into the lives of the characters I connected with in the first book. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel as part if the I Read with Audra book tour. Where the Road Bends
by
Rachel Fordham

A redemption story that takes Norah and Quincy on a long, winding road. This is a story about dreams. They can be dashed, postponed, changed or fulfilled. “Some dreams take time.” I like Norah because one of her dreams is to sit on the porch snd read a whole stack of books. She is a kindred spirit. She believes in God and believes He can take the worst experiences and turn them for good. God can take light and dispel the darkness. Quincy is not perfect but learns that with God, he can turn his life around. He longs to make dreams come true for Norah. This was a sweet, sometimes harsh story. But in the end it showed how God can use people for His purpose. Ms. Fordham writes beautiful prose and infuses her story with hope and forgiveness. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell through a giveaway on Library Thing. In Honor's Defense
by
Karen Witemeyer
Polly
, May 25, 2022
Preach, Luke Davenport, is hero material. He sees himself as “discontented, dangerous and a little bit deranged.” But Damaris sees him as “driven, devoted and dependable.” What I like about Luke is he has hidden the word of God in his heart and relies on it in every situation. He regrets the sins of his past but as a new creature in Christ, he and fellow Horesemen use their lives to help others. That is one lesson Luke learns when he comes upon Damaris and her orphaned nephew, Nate. Luke sees himself in the young teen and wants to help him overcome feelings of inadequacy and helplessness that are leading Nate into trouble. But when trouble comes calling, God answers in the person of Luke. I love the way the author makes her heroes and heroines flawed and vulnerable but then uses those traits to show how God can work things for good. Damaris is shy and considers herself invisible but she lives up to the challenge of caring for her nephew and showing the friuts of the Spirit. This was a great ending to the series, but I hate to see the stories of the Horsemen end. Ms. Witemeyer always gives us totally believable characters, humor amid the danger and a swoony romance. Season of My Enemy

Even though I lived in Wisconsin for eleven years, I never knew that in 1944 German Prisoners of War were housed there. This story shows the reasons why the PWs, as they were known, were used to labor on farms. Rather than languishing in camps, they were paid in script to work on local farms, replacing the men who were overseas fighting for freedom. The author explores the emotions of the American farmers as they are asked to accept help from their enemies. Likewise, the mixed feelings of the prisoners are revealed as they cope with their circumstances. Ms. Musch shows how the characters, whether American or German, struggle to reconcile the enormity and unfairness of war with their faith. They grow spiritually by getting to know each other individually and by putting Biblical principles into practice. They exhibit forgiveness and acceptance of people on their own merits, not some pre-conceived bias. And of course love blooms! Well told in an easy way that helps you relate to the characters. I am really enjoying this series and learning more things about WWII. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishers. I was not required to give a favorable review. This is the second in the series Sisters of the Porcelain Doll but can be read as a stand alone. Four friends make a pact to stay in touch as they get married and go their ways. Heather places a ribbon inside a doll as her part of the vow. Heather, after the death of her mother and a quick marriage to Riley, sets out for Oregon by wagon in 1847. This book shows the many hardships of early settlers and how faith sustained them. It showcases how friends care and support each other. There are two worthy heroes, each lending strength to Heather as she struggles with all life has to send her. My favorite part was the lumber camp and how the rough woodsmen protected Heather and Liza, the camp cooks. The author pens a dastardly villain, the kind you hope gets his just deserts. If you are looking for a historical romance with danger along with the fun, look no farther. *I received a complimentary ecopy of this book from the author. *You can’t buy happiness. But you can buy ice cream and that is pretty much the same thing.* *Ice cream is cheaper than therapy * *Ice cream never asks silly questions. Ice cream understands.* Even the lead-ins to the chapters gave me an appetite for ice cream! Reading this novel is like enjoying a nice big bowl of your favorite flavor! I liked meeting Marnie and her daughter Dawn as each is navigating life’s troubles. They have lost their dad/husband, Philip. In addition, Marnie has just recovered from breast cancer and Dawn is reeling from a broken engagement weeks before the wedding. Although total opposites in temperament, they join forces to realize a dream that Philip had of opening an ice cream shop. As a lover of all things historical, I relished the process they had go through to preserve their building, while updating it enough to make it a viable business. Add in interesting facts about making ice cream and the sometimes quirky inhabitants of the town and you have a great story. Not that ice cream fixes everything, but Marnie and Dawn grew in their faith and realized a purpose in their lives as they took on the task of their new venture. I am glad there will be more books about Main Street Creamery in Cape Cod. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Revell Reads review program. When the Meadow Blooms

When the Meadow Blooms is a grand story that encompasses many emotions. Hardship and sorrow seem to follow Rose and her daughters, Calla and Sienna as Rose battles TB and the girls endure time in an orphanage. The past haunts Dirk Meadows when he cannot get over the grief of losing family members and his first, young love. In addition, he was badly burned in a barn fire. But when Rose, the girls and Dirk meet again, healing and hope slowly take over. God comforts Rose through the words of Romans 8. “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor power, nor thing present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God.” This is one of my very favorite verses and I am glad Ms. Gabhart chose it to illustrate the faith that Rose clung to. I like that the meadow on the farm played a part in the book. It was a favorite place for young Sienna, who loved nature and animals. It was something she looked forward to when she was waiting in the orphanage. It personified hope and new birth. A family Bible, likewise, was instrumental in bringing lost souls home. Reading a book by Ann Gabhart is like sitting with an old and trusted friend and sharing comforting words of faith. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell on behalf of the author. Captivating story surrounding the milk strikes in Wisconsin during the Depression. Having lived in Wisconsin for 11 years, I was intrigued by the history. The author brings to life the turbulent times with a heroine who is independent and a hero who is strong and resilient. Lily Moore is an unwitting participant in the conflict between the dairy farmers and the milk distributors. Miles Wright and his team from the Craft Agency have been hired to protect Lily. After a disastrous rescue, Miles finds himself the only thing between Lily and peril. The author has captured the tension and danger in a time when people were fighting for a fair price in order to keep their businesses afloat and families fed. Ms Grandinetti piqued my interest with her characterizations of her villains and family dynamics. Add to that keeping of secrets and a growing fondness between Miles and Lily and you have an exciting, well crafted story of an important time in our history. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. *I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*

“Wounds might shape us, but they can’t determine who we are” “He’d sensed God’s redemption at work inside little by little, taking his scars and hurts.” Welcome to Brody McQuaid’s story. He is still haunted by nightmares of battle and Andersonville during the Civil War. Brody has a soft spot for animals and especially his young niece. Ms. Hedlund shows that a strong man, who is brought low by memories, can overcome with faith in God. She also shows how people are human and are tempted but that they do not have to give in to their desires. The author portrays a confused heroine who wants to please her parents but seeks to be a veterinarian. Savannah escapes from a loveless union and ends up on the ranch that the McQuaids own. Danger in a snowstorm threatens, and other men appear to have ulterior motives. Ms. Hedlund crafts characters with grit, determination, faith and a love of family. Great book. I love the format of this cookbook. It is spiral bound and has a lot of colorful pictures of the recipes. It is organized by seasons both by what is available by seasons and what tastes good by seasons. Other great features are scripture passages sprinkled throughout and cooking and household tips. The recipes are often short with readily available ingredients. There is a wide variety of recipes from breakfast through dessert. “Any housewife, no matter how large her family, can always get some time alone by doing the dishes.” Martha Miller, Decatur, IN There is something for everyone! Violet has made a vow to find out what was behind her husband’s death. She owns Fragrant Sentiments, a flower shop in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in 1891. I love the parts of poems that introduce each chapter. They are all about love and flowers, a language Violet is well versed in and lends to her suggestions to customers which flowers would best suit the situation. Since her husband, Roger, died in a freak accident, she has run the shop alone. Enter Holly and her uncle Devon Moore, seeking flowers for an upcoming wedding. Violet hires Holly to help in the shop and thereby a relationship blooms with Devon. Violet starts to receive beautifully penned love notes. The trouble is, she can’t figure out who her secret admirer is. She narrows it down to three likely men: Devon, a wealthy lumber baron, Webster, her delivery man and helper at her gardens, and Frankie, whom she knew when she was younger and who is visiting his mother. This was a well written story that moves along with some intrigue and some soul searching and a likable faith thread. *I received a complimentary ebook copy from the author. Steeped in the history of Texas with all the danger of the battle for independence from Santa Anna, Ms. Tolsma weaves a possible scenario around an interesting artifact. Filled with facts from bygone days and a believable story of what might have happened, we see danger and connections both in the past and in the present, all the while with an underpinning of faith. Fabulous. What a wonderfully unique dual time/time travel story. Libby from 1774 Williamsburg and Anna Elizabeth from 1914 New York society are the same person! When Libby goes to sleep in one time, she wakes up in the other, alternating time periods! She must decide which time period she wants to remain in by her 21 st birthday. Ms. Meyer has come up with an absolutely captivating premise, and she executes it with believable characters and scenarios. Libby and Henry are right in the formative days of the American Revolution with interactions with some of our founding fathers. We feel the emotions going through Libby as she sees Henry putting his life in danger for the patriots. “Freedom is not free. The price is far greater than anyone realizes.” And when Libby navigates her days leading up to WWI, we see how torn she is in her life in the early 1900s. Ms. Meyer puts a few twists and turns into the story, weaving faith throughout, but the end is satisfying with a hint at what the next book in the series could be about. “There are some things too mysterious for us to understand. We are not to know all the answers. Only God is and He calls us to trust and believe that He is doing what is best.” Definitely going on my keeper shelf and I am awaiting the next book! * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. In a departure from her usual historical, Ms. White delves into a different part of history. This story is set in 1920s Chicago, steeped in the shadowy, old world Mafia and their families, just as Al Capone is making inroads into organized crime. This is an intriguing, complex story that probes the disreputable times, where the characters wrestle with unsettling choices between loyalty to family and doing what is morally right. Lorenzo is trying to break the mold by being an honest lawyer and separating himself from the Mob. But he finds it difficult not to get caught up when his fiancée, Sabina, needs his help. Sabina has attended Church her whole life, but wrong decisions and certain revelations find her torn and questioning her reality. Will faith sustain them or break them apart? Come along as Ms. White weaves her magic and takes us back to a dark time and still manages to give us a romantic happy ending.

Ms. Camden always manages to take privileged, socially prominent characters and give them substance, warmth and faith. This time the story is about Natalia Blackstone who oversees the construction project for the Trans Siberian Railway as she forges her way in the finance department of the bank her father owns. There is so much history conveyed here. The author deftly weaves her story among real events, I still learn new things. I was curious about the Boxer Rebellion from a different perspective because my grandfather and his brother were missionaries to China and spent time as prisoners of war in Japan during this time. My favorite character was Dimitri. A noble man who is loyal to his country, but won’t cover up an injustice, he is a mix of gentility and teasing little boy. He can be charming but when faced with adversity, he is resilient and incredibly strong willed. An unlikely match for the notable Natalie Blackstone, who is equally strong willed as she is establishing a foothold for women in the banking world. They find common ground as they fight for a worthy cause. This is a sweeping saga that evokes many emotions. A worthy second book in The Blackstone Legacy. I cannot wait for the next book. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*

Kekoa Young, whose name means: The Brave One, feels anything but brave since his brother died in a surfing accident. After all, he is just a cryptologist, a computer nerd and does not feel qualified to protect anyone. But when he meets Elinor, his protective instincts go into high gear. This is another- hold on to your seats- thrilling adventure about the SNAP Agency. Even though I know very little about codes, the author brought them to life and made them an integral part of the story. I learned a lot about this unit of colleagues and friends who work in Washington DC. The many layers made it hard to discover the bad guys behind the scenes. Someone was trying to steal the notebooks that were all that was left from the grandfather Elinor loved. Among the excitement and danger, Ms. Walters inserts humor, romance and shows us how the characters rely on God. Elinor holds on to the song: His Eye Is On The Sparrow. Sparrow was a nickname given to her by her grandfather, so she frequently recalls that God is watching over her. I really enjoy Ms. Walters’ writing and will anxiously await the next book. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell on behalf of the author and an ARC through a Library Thing. Fantastic debut novel about Sam who, upon returning home after WWII, struggles with nightmares. While away during the war, Sam tried to hang on to the shadows of home to get him through the awful things that he experienced. Now the shadows of the war haunt him at the most unlikely times. But what others assume are figments of his war-rorn imagination, turn out to be real threats. Sam wants to protect his family but no one believes him. His wife, Annie, thinks she is weak, but proved her strength in the years Sam was away. Previously, she stood up to her mobster father but could circumstances prove him to be a help to her or a hindrance? A favorite character was Dovie May. Even though she has suffered a stroke and seizures, she is feisty and the voice of reason and Godly wisdom. “You’d think holding joy right up against sadness would shatter a body. But it don’t. Joy... it sneaks in all around where things is broke, sticks it all together, and finds a way to make you whole. It’s where things is broke that the joy shows through.” “ The same God who made rainbows and sunshine also made thunder and lightning. I have to believe He knows what He is doing.” The author tells such a vivid story with danger and hidden turmoil that I believe ir would make a memorable movie! *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel through I Read With Audra. It is hard to believe this is a debut novel. It is packed with information about the Secret Service in 1883. The characters are richly drawn and the story moves at a fast pace with danger at every turn of the page. The romance was complex and the villains were crafty. I so enjoyed this story with well researched facts about the Secret Service. Agent Broderick Cosgrove is tracking a counterfeiting ring which leads him to a very interesting lady, Theresa Plane. Theresa is doing her best to cancel the debts that her grandfather accumulated. But he is keeping things from her and that puts her in danger. Broderick, in agent mode, trusts no one and tries to separate lies from the truth. There in lies the conundrum when Broderick and Theresa start to favor each other. In addition, Theresa is having a crisis of faith but she finds support in her friend, Lydia: “I know you have been struggling, but ...you cannot lose God... if you have nothing left, turn to the One you do have. He is there waiting.” Interesting, also, were references to other characters and their back story. This dual-time novel showcases the artists who crafted the fabulous Fabergé eggs and a treasure hunt in modern day. What if there was a secret egg that was taken out of Russia just after the Revolution? Ava is summoned to her estranged father’s death bed. He wants her to find an object steeped in the elegance of 1900s Russia and The House Of Fabergé. With extensive research, the author takes us to St Petersburg in the early 1900s and the almost fairytale setting amidst political turmoil. Ms. Stuart brings us to the present with a cast of characters that can be surprising. I was disappointed that in the past, Nick chose treasure hunting over his daughter, Ava and wife, Carol. Things change when his health deteriorates. Ava is adrift in her go-nowhere job when Nick gives her the task that has her creative dreams yearning to follow. She is to hunt for a Fabergé egg that might not exist. This is a very interesting story that smudges the lines between good and evil and keeps you on your toes. I kept looking for a spiritual thread. Since Revell is the publisher, I expected this to be a Christian novel. It is not, but it is a clean-read and very enjoyable to see the progression of the characters. * A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell through Interviews and Reviews. I love visiting Hope Harbor and these enchanting stories. SeaGlass Cottage contains two second- chance romances. The main romance is between Christi and Jack who had know each other thirteen years in the past. Christi was a spoiled rich girl with no thought about how her actions could affect others. She is trying to rectify past sins. Jack has chosen Hope Harbor as a refuge and plans to continue writing novels there. However a death of someone he knew brings new situations his way. Now he has to juggle additional responsibilities with his career as an author and his job as a police officer. Circumstances bring Jack and Christi together time and time again. “ Coincidence is nothing more than a small miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous.” It was great to re-connect with characters from other books in the series as well as friendly seagulls, Floyd and Gladys. As before, the community comes togetherto solve the problem of a dwindling tourist season. The writing is accomplished, the characters are memorable and the spiritual lessons are worthy of contemplation. Hope Harbor is just a fun place to be. All That It Takes

Beautifully written, heart tugging story. Ms. Deese has given us characters that are real. We recognize part of ourselves in their stories. They are vulnerable, but want to serve and are looking for God’s purpose in their lives. Miles is a pastor whose ministry focus has changed but he resents the senior pastor for moving him to an outreach facility that he sees as dying. A mentor coaches him about listening to God. “That still small voice will speak when you’re ready to listen. Your job is to slow down long enough to hear it.” Let the fun begin when Miles finds Val in his thought-to-be-empty rental apartment! As they get to know each other, Ms Deese inserts wit and humor. She also has fun showing us Val’s ten year old son, Tucker. Val is trying to make a fresh start and is wary of opening up to new friends. Some difficult topics are dealt with but the author handles them with grace and finesse. Through her characters, she challenges us to really love our neighbor by putting away pride, uncertainty and vulnerability. “Sometimes all that it takes is one person being willing to step out in love for the betterment of another to change the trajectory of an entire life.” This story runs the gamut of serious and solemn to cute and quirky. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. This is the third book in the US Marshals series and wraps up a case revealed in the first book. There are other cases that take the focus off of the murder of Luke James, husband of Madison. If I had not read the first two books, it would have been hard to follow the main thread. Even so, I thought a few things needed explaining. Partners Madison and Jonas are in the thick of it again. They are trying to find a missing mother, baby and babysitter, encountering puzzling clues and dangerous people. They are also putting off the discussion of where their relationship is going. They are still working through past hurts. “I have learned that pain and tragedy become part of who we are. But that does not mean that you cannot move forward despite the pain.” They do rely on their faith when they find themselves overwhelmed and both comment that they each challenge each other in good ways. Lots of twists and turns and cringeworthy criminals. Absolutely worth the read. There are hints of a story about a secondary character. Exceptional story of the courage during the German occupation near Normandy, France. The author depicts young Rosalie and her teen brother, Marcel, fighting the only way they knew how: helping the Resistance. The story is fraught with danger and is full of the real history of the region. Ms. Couch incorporates a great love story and shows a re-awakening of faith in the hero and heroine. Rosalie holds on to the scripture she gleans from a discarded Bible and remembers a selfless love of her father who died as a POW. “If we have no control over what will come, then leave it to the Only one who does.” The author gives us a picture of a German soldier, Franz, whose heart is not with the oppressors and who can see the true motives behind the German occupation. “I remember you and your brother, and the feeling of doing the right thing. And then watching you, seeing your courage. You remind me of who I used to be. Who I want to be.” The reason I like stories about WWII is because I always learn something. Books like these remind us that we should never forget what happened, hopefully in order to never relinquish our freedoms again. Epic novel. This is one to savor and experience Vienna and Prague vicariously. I love spy stories. This one is stunning and cerebral. Set in Prague and Vienna post WWII, this novel was all about the cold war and espionage. It is easy to see why Ms. McMillan loves these beautiful cities from her vivid descriptions of them. I have always loved spy stories and this author does spy to a T. Set partially in Vienna, the city of spies, this story drew me in with its complex plot and exemplary characters. A marriage of convenience between old English gentry was crafted with a poignant romance. Sophie is a capable, strong heroine but is vulnerable where Simon is concerned. Simon is an exceptional agent and is still working for England in the aftermath of war. The old friends support each other but they both have secrets, one of which is their growing fondness for one another. A key point in this intriguing story is Mozart, his history and his music. It is wonderfully tied together. Sophie adores his music so much that it plays in her head and her fingers execute the pieces of music seemingly of their own volition. A memorable story for fans of Historical Fiction with tie-ins to espionage and beautiful Prague and Vienna. * I received a complimentary ecopy of this book from the author. It’s no secret that I love reading about suspense that includes the alphabet agencies. Ms Blackburn is very adept at writing some of the best suspense out there. I’m glad we get to see characters from her previous books. This adds to the atmosphere of camaraderie and brings a layer of expertise into the picture. Ivy and Gil have a long history broken by a painful experience and 15 years of distance. Scary circumstances bring them together again but can past hurts be healed? This story had an intriguing and unique premise and enough people with questionable backgrounds to keep you guessing at who was behind the threat. The danger was palpable on every page. “Her week had been surreal. She’d been dropped right into a Salvador Dali painting, where everything she knew was still there but distorted in new and mostly disturbing ways.” I liked the way that God was never far from Ivy or the agents helping her. “Lord, I don’t know what to do, so my eyes are on you.” After all, part of the reason they are the good guys is that they can call on God to sustain them in their risky jobs. I thoroughly enjoyed this absorbing, suspenseful tale. Wow, what a nail biter! My kind of suspense. Former sniper, Christina, has become a bodyguard for the Elite Guardians Agency. She is bright and capable but mostly keeps to herself. Grey is a disabled veteran who is a dog handler with a special working dog, Boss, who is his best friend. Boss is so special that he is the one who needs protection. A mention is made of Fort Leonard Wood which is very close to where I live, so that was interesting. This is an accomplished book with more than a little excitement and intrigue. The bad guys are well-drawn and the good guys are just flawed enough to make them interesting and able to grow in their faith. “The word Christ jumped off the page and hit her square in the heart, confirming why she was here. God was her rock, the one who trained her hands for war and her fingers for battle.” This is a great story to continue the Elite Guardian series. I liked reconnecting with characters from the series. With much to learn and many decisions to make, including picking a prince to marry, Bri puts her trust in God to lead her. “As long as you keep Him in the forefront, He will reveal His Will. Then you will be able to face anything that comes your way.” Ms. Shiloh has brought the fictional Oloro Ile to life in this stunning novel. She has conjured a beautiful island off the coast of Africa as a totally believable place. I could almost see the sights and smell the market of spices and the flowers in the garden. The characters are fleshed out with a swoony hero, a supportive best friend and a heroine who is both beautiful and capable of meeting the demands set before her. The author addresses the issues of faith, family, class and women in power or in business in a natural and satisfying way, as obstacles are put in Bri’s way. I am looking forward to going back to this enchanting small kingdom to see what happens to best friend Iris. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House and BPH Open Book. This was a wonderful dual time story that had me absorbed in both time lines. The author depicted the Indian captives in such a fascinating way, showing their viewpoint realistically. A highlight was when a lady was explaining the Gospel to Broken Bow, an Indian incarcerated at Fort Marion. Tying the past to the present day was a ledger containing art done by the Indians. I had not heard of ledger art before. It originated at Fort Marion, Florida in the 1870s. The present was very interesting as well. We meet Dani, who is discovering things about her father, Franklin, after so many years apart. His death brings her an inheritance and a mystery. Brad, a museum curator, is caring for his adorable four year old niece, Brynn. And we have Matty, a friend and neighbor of Franklin. Matty is a big biker of a guy but is quite the teddy bear and is a solid Christian who dispenses godly wisdom and looks out for Dani, Brad and Brynn. Brad and Dani recognize that God has brought them together for a purpose. One reason was to strengthen their faith. I love that this novel was based in history of Fort Marion, Florida and the treatment of the Indians there. It showed hardships but also compassion. This kind of historical account should not be forgotten. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing. I was not required to give a favorable review. Great start to the new series, The Lumber Baron’s Daughters. We meet the sisters, Laura, Michelle and Jillian Stiles, as they sneak out of the house, on the run from their evil stepfather, leaving their mother behind and in danger. Boarding a train, they connect with a parson and his helpers on their way to a mission field near a gold mine. The three sisters are very well educated. Their real father had them trained in order to take over the family lumber dynasty. In addition, Laura knows chemistry and is adept at blowing things up. Michelle is a mechanical engineer and is very well organized. Jilly is a structural engineer and loves math. They are on the run but also in search of husbands so that they might return home, save their mother and wrest the family business from their stepfather. Caleb is a parson with a past of secrets but a heart for the lost. Laura has set her sights on him but: “Getting to know a man was almost more work than it was worth.” With her signature wit and plenty of danger to go around, Mary Connealy infuses her story with godly lessons, giving us unique and likable characters and just enough uncertainty to pique our interest for the next book. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. Enchanting the Heiress

With a heroine who reminds me of Jane Austen’s Emma, a meddlesome lady who wants to help people because she knows what is best, Ms. Hunter brings levity to her latest romance. “After all, it seemed making other people’s dreams come true was what she did best.” The setting was one of my favorites, a few country estates with good friends within riding distance of each other. Jonas Fitzroy and sister Sophia from book two in the series, are settling in to their country life. In Jonas, the author gives us an unusual hero who is neither rich nor titled and is several years younger than the heroine, Harriet. To Jonas, Harriet is a puzzle: “There were a great many things he didn’t know about, and he was quickly moving ‘women’ to the top of that list.” Jonas, who has a Bible quote for almost every contingency, wonders about his purpose in life. Since his sister married, he is no longer her protector. Harriet sets her sights on Jonas to resolve the situation. But does Jonas want her meddling in his life? Opposites attract but it takes a while with such stubborn, opinionated people. A likable story with quirky characters and a pretty country setting. It was fun to see Jonas and Harriet grow and learn to navigate what life threw at them. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. This book started out with not one, but two brutal murders set ten years apart. What struck me was that both bodies were discovered by Delaney Broward. What an absolutely shocking thing for someone to go through. With her best friend, Ellie, murdered, her unlikely partner in trying to solve the crime is Hunter Nash, the convicted killer of her brother ten years before. Hunter is freshly out of prison but wants to prove that he did not kill Ellie or Corey. Hunter is a changed man, an avowed Christian while Delaney has been questioning her faith since Corey died. The plot is a good one with twists and turns that had me contemplating who the real killer could be. A nice touch was a Christian cop who strove to find the real culprit and not just assume things. The circumstances made everything come to a head with a final, exciting scene. Hunter and Delaney are on track again both in their faith and their romance. "Why did she still turn to God when the chips were down?. Because no one else was omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient." This is the first book that I have read by Kelly Irvin and I will definitely be looking up the back list of this thrilling author. *I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through Partners In Crime Tours. Shadows of Swanford Abbey

Julie Klassen captivates me with her Regency, English settings and well drawn characters. Lady’s companion, Rebecca Lane, and Sir Fredrick Wilford were childhood friends. They meet up again at the mysterious Swanford Abbey which has been made into a grand hotel. While staying there, a murder occurs. Sir Fredrick, as magistrate, officiates the investigation. Ms. Klassen did a great job of giving us plenty of suspects to choose from. To flesh out the story, we are treated to lovely descriptions of all things English. I especially liked Sir Fredrick and his use of a chessboard as a tool to figure out the would be culprit. While Fredrick is sorting out his feelings for his dead wife, Rebecca is trying to help her brother navigate poor choices, rescue his living as an author, and regain his self respect. Then there is the person in a Nun’s habit who seems to pop up unexpectedly. Could this be the person who murdered Mr. Oliver? An interesting character was Dr. Fox who seemed a humane doctor to the mentally ill. He was knowledgeable, godly and compassionate. I also like Lady Fitzhoward , the employer of Rebecca. She was a puzzle to figure out. This story was suspenseful, complex and spoke of justice and forgiveness. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House. What an interesting and exciting adventure. Mrs. Peg Witherspoon is a war widow who has been a pilot for a very long time. She uses her expertise to become a WASP during WWII. This story showcases the jobs WASPs did, from ferrying planes to being a mechanic and beyond. I liked the way the female characters bolstered each other and showed their patriotism. The book also shed light on the way the WASPs were treated by their male counterparts, sometimes not so well. The romance with Major Howie Berg was slow and steady since neither wanted to jeopardize their jobs. And through it all, Peg returns to her faith since it faltered since the death of her husband. Some highlights were when the ladies scavenged a plane from the graveyard of abandoned airplanes. And danger had me on the edge of my seat more than once. This is a great addition to the Heroine of WWII series. I recommend this enjoyable book. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing. What a great series this has been to see what life was like in Nome, Alaska in the early 1900s. Whitney Powell has been a steadfast fixture in her family. But after losing her mother and then her grandfather, she is barely holding it together. She is also dealing with the appearance of the father she thought was dead and his other family! The authors give a realistic glimpse of the physical hardships of Nome in 1905 as well as the emotional upheaval that has come upon the Powell family. Whitney wants to appear strong but her resolve and even her faith is on shaky ground which results in bad decisions. Dr. Peter Cameron is capable and compassionate but he, too, is mourning the loss of family members.Whitney and Peter grow closer as they try to cope with an epidemic in town as well as the outlying native villages. In addition, the family is being undermined by a sneaky villain. The family supports each other and prays for each situation. “It is in times like these that I have to remind myself over and over that God is in control. He doesn’t need my help. But we need His.” This is a story of suffering and hardships but also of redemption, forgiveness and relying on God. Because God is the only one who is Ever Constant. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the authors. I was not required to give a favorable review. Ms. Nelson pens stories that make you think. Her characters are flawed, strong and well represented. Cassie has always wondered who her real mother was even though she was raised by a loving relative, her Aunt Shasta. Coming home to care for Shasta who has health issues, Cassie again begins to search for answers. She brings her delightful four year old daughter, Lark, back to Oregon. Lark is a bright spot in this book of deep subjects. The author has captured the actions of this tiny girl. Ms. Nelson portrays Cassie as very caring of Shasta and Lark as she tries to juggle life. “Caregiving was a maze that surprised Cassie with new obstacles at every turn.” But Cassie finds strength in her friends and returns to her childhood faith. She begins to hope for a better future. “ Cassie, you are who God designed you to be, you are growing and changing all the time, and it may seem like you are lost in all the mess of life sometimes, but your identity is not in your name, your hair color, your job or your academic achievements. It is in your heart.” With a touch of mystery and a touch of romance you will want to follow along on the journey of Cassie, Lark and Shasta. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. “Her desires and the things her faith led her to do had always aligned. Until this moment. Now, they threatened to tear her asunder.” During unrest in Ireland, Lady Annabeth De Lacy has come to Galway when her father is appointed Landlord. As an obedient daughter, she puts family interests first promising to marry for an advantageous connection. This is a first-hand look at the struggles of the era and the life of a jeweler in Galway. The story, built around the Claddagh symbol, is very interesting and the Claddagh is applied to spiritual truths: “What better way to express love, loyalty and friendship than what our Lord did for us on the cross?” Forbidden love, clashes between countries and classes, and things done out of obligation are played out in this colorful tale in Ireland. Walking through the pages of this novel, you will find danger, attraction and dreams hoped for and quashed. But most of all you will find loyalty, friendship and love. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. “Nothing of any worth lies on the easy path.” I have come to rely on Sarah Sundin for a beautiful story in a beautiful setting. As always, her extensive research sets the stage for a memorable book. Absolutely stunning story of unexpected love under the adversity of occupied Paris. The Green Leaf Book Store in Paris captured my interest as well as did Lucie, an American dancing in a premier ballet company. The author shows a natural progression of faith and testing under dire circumstances. Lucie’s bravery and buoyancy come to the forefront. Paul Aubrey, a wealthy American producing quality cars, is also caught in Paris during increasingly perilous times. I love the logo chosen for the cars-AU- for gold, hence the gold standard Paul aspires to in his company. He realizes: “There was a far higher standard than quality, Do good. Resist Evil.” A highlight that shows the creativity of Lucie and Josie, Paul’s 4 year old daughter, was the puppet show during the Children’s Story Time in the book shop, and the of candy names Paul uses for Josie were precious. This story was full of suspense, danger, unexpected twists and a lesson in faith and courage. “Stories, dancing, music...they nourish. They make us think and feel. They distract us from the hardness of life. That is a gift from God.” *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revel through Interviews and Reviews. Outrageous fun! In the conclusion to the series we finally get to find out why Eunice dresses in all black with numerous veils to hide her identity. All is revealed when Arthur Livingston hires Eunice to find a missing heiress. When she vehemently discourages him, the fun is non-stop especially with her eclectic group of inquiry agents, a bodyguard and a Pinkerton helper. Originally wanting to marry Eunice “for her own good”, Arthur changes his opinion of Eunice: “she was a delightful mix of practical, whimsy and dry wit, with her admission about having a romantic nature adding depth to her he had not realized existed.” And what could be more romantic than a man who gifts her with Pride and Prejudice, reads it to her and “knows his way around a good kiss.” Then there is narrowing down the list of suspects in the murder of her grandfather. “Vincent should go on the list simply because there is something shifty about a bookstore owner who doesn’t sell Jane Austen.” What happens when Eunice decides the truth will set her free? You will have to see for yourself as you read this delightful, comedic book. You will want to read the whole series! *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. I love the stories that Roseanna White pens. Her cast of characters takes center stage in the story of the other Elizabeth who was introduced in book one. Beth is in search of pirate treasure on one of the small islands of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall. She has found clues to a legend of an ancestor and hopes that it more than a tall tale. Lord Theodore Sheridan, a hobby archeologist, is in the Islands with some friends. Theo is a favorite character who is totally taken with Beth. His internal thoughts are hilarious and break through to be spoken at an inopportune time. Another favorite is his valet Ainsley who tries to keep his master on the straight and narrow, dispensing advice and Godly wisdom. I like the way Theo and his friends interact. They include everyone to puzzle out the mystery, females and servants alike. It was as if I were in the Library with them. This is a story with a search for pirate treasure but also a realization that treasure takes many forms. The care that Beth takes in searching out the handed-down tales shows that there is treasure in remembering family and preserving the old stories. There are so many things in this book: adventure, danger, villiany and lessons in humility, redemption, forgiveness and godly living. Another sure winner and a top pick of the year. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. “A dream that is worth anything is worth waiting for to come true.” Flora Wingfield has had a dream to be an independent woman. It is attainable with the wealth her father is willing to bestow on her upon her marriage. But there is another dream she longs to fulfill: to make Theodore Day her groom. Teddy is one of the bachelors who lost out in the contest to wed Willow Dupre, a close friend of Flora. He is not looking to receive yet another broken heart. He is putting all his efforts into the family business of building luxury river boats. Eldest of five daughters, Flora has an ultimatum from her father: wed before the summer is done. Jealousy, competition, danger and shenanigans ensue to make this a hilarious story of Gilded Age society in the hot summer of the South. Through it all Teddy is the perfect gentleman who gets more than he bargained for and learns where to put his priorities. The faith thread was underlying and brought out some worthy lessons. I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in American Royalty series. The antics of Flora and her sisters were so much fun, as were the flock of damsels chasing after Teddy. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. After reading the author notes, I was prepared for some trigger situations. It seemed like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and I had a lot of trepidation while reading most of the book. This story seems to be a catharsis for the author. Putting that aside, it was very well written with some beautiful descriptive passages. This was a thought provoking book: “Truth has a way of working itself into any story, whether the writer means it or not.” It also was a great glimpse into the writing process of the main character. There was a mysterious aspect in that Kendra was trying to find out who had written her a letter signed A Very Disappointed Reader. Several mysteries unfold as we get to know the characters. My favorite characters were Ike, an old WWII veteran who told many stories and dispensed wisdom and Andreas, who was translating Kendra’s book into German. Andreas provided a stabilizing influence on Kendra in her search for truth. Kendra had to find answers to many questions in order to re-establish relationships and define who she really was and move forward. In the end it was a tender love story and a tale of healing. I would consider this to be a moderately clean read with some possible triggers for those who are sensitive to such. It was not written from a clear Christian perspective. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell through Interviews and Reviews. I was not required to give a favorable review. “Tis never amiss to hope...dream.” Esmee Shaw was a heart adrift. It remained to bee seen if she would find her harbor, her home, with Captain Henri Lennox. “ she wasn’t reminded at every turn of Henri Lennox, like she was when at the chocolate shop. On the other hand, she didn’t need reminding, as he’d taken up permanent residence in her head and her heart.” From the beautiful cover until the last word, this is a treasure. Characters that are worthy of emulating. Esmee is a business woman in her own chocolate shop and a patron ofthe almshouse. Henri is a Captain in the Royal Navy who has been away for a decade. Once pledged to each other, they had a parting of ways which each now regrets. The story is rich in atmosphere, showing how each has matured through the years. The author captures the colonial period with sumptuous words, taking you through the streets of York and Williamsburg realistically. Ms. Frantz gives her characters a living faith that reaches out to us in the present: “The only certainty about life was its uncertainty. Only God stayed steadfast. Only the Almighty could walk her through life’s many changes. And when she felt overwhelmed, she simply had to look back and see how faithful God had been.... The heartaches and closed doors of the past had made the present more beloved.” This is a story that brings history alive. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell.I wasn’t required to give a favorable review. With the help of well-mannered Ewan Hawkins, solicitor of the late Mr. Cluett, Amelia sets out to find out mor about her suitors. Truth tangled among the lies. Hidden passageways, secrets concealed in unused rooms and a spooky look into a precursor of hypnotism. Ms. Wilson’s prose is stunning: “A swallow sang from somewhere in the distance. Nature’s soothing hum. The sun shook free of a blanket of clouds lit the morning dew as it glinted across the flowers like tiny diamonds at our feet.” With engaging, mysterious characters and a thoroughly tantalizing plot, Ms. Wilson continues to captivate me with her gothic tales. The Finder of Forgotten Things

Sarah Loudin Thomas

, January 06, 2022
Taking a superstition concerning dowsing and building a story during the Depression in America, Ms. Thomas gives us a lesson to ponder: Are the things we are looking for selfish or should they benefit others? Sully is looking for self-worth, the lazy way. He is a con man and a rascally charmer. “I don’t think he is a bad man so much as he’s a lost one who doesn’t quite know how to get along with people for more than a day or two.” Gainey Floyd has a secret in her past and although it is not forgotten, she knows God loves her. She has hidden the Word in her heart and brings out verses to fit the occasion.” I’ve memorized a great many verses over the years, and sometimes it’s as if the world calls them out of me.” Jeremiah is steadfast and wants to do the right thing. The three become friends in an unusual way and out of necessity. This is a heartwarming, homey story with much sadness but blooming with the truth that God works in spite of us. The author gives us beauty in the midst of sorrow: “It was a perfect day-the sky that derp, rich blue that only happens in autumn when God needs just the right backdrop for the glory of red, gold and orange leaves.” A memorable story from a favorite storyteller. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. A long-time favorite author, Colleen Coble, pens another absorbing tale of mystery and danger. So many suspenseful layers and twists and turns to keep you on your toes. Torie Bergstrom has lost her best friend, Lisbeth, and goes undercover to find the truth behind her death. She cannot believe that Lisbeth took her own life or drowned by accident as is surmised. But who is trying to cover it up? And who is playing mind games with Torie? While at the resort where Lisbeth died, she meets widower Joe Abbot and his daughter Hailey. Joe is security for the resort and has a super interesting business training Sea lions for the Navy. All things ramp up with threats coming from all directions. Does Torie’s investigation and Joe’s diving troubles have any connection? Ms. Coble uses descriptions of the area to great advantage. I especially liked the baby turtles scurrying to the sea, the underwater reef diving and the interaction with the sea lion, Simon. The faith thread was natural and shows Joe quoting scripture with eight year old Hailey and using everyday observations to teach her spiritual things. “God uses all the bad things in our lives to make us more beautiful, too. Nothing is wasted-it all serves a purpose.” Another winning suspenseful story. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson Publishing through Partners In Crime Tours. A real page turner exciting and not over done! Wow! What a nail biter. I have long been a fan of Lynette Eason. What is special about this book is that it is completely believable and exciting but not over-the-top with unrealistic scenarios. Penny the chopper pilot is very smart and has even rescued FBI agent Holton Satterfield. They meet again when a serial killer is loose in a remote area on a mountain. Penny has to make an emergency landing and is not aware of the menace. Penny and Holt and their coworkers are likable. Some are Christians and I appreciate that the author shows their faith as natural. The villain was very creepy and some scenes were disturbing, i liked that Penny was strong and she used her brain as much as her defensive moves. “Things were clicking in her brain, little pieces of information swimming around up there, but she had no idea how to put it all together.” Well, She did it! Just in time. There were some surprises at the end including a second problem that Holt was working on. A fantastic start to a new series:Extreme Measures. Ms. Eason keeps proving to be a favorite. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell through Interviews and Reviews. I was not required to give a favorable review. What an incredible follow up to Come Back to Me. We now encounter Ellen Creighton as she is ravaged with a rare disease and cancer. Her trusted friend, wheelchair bound Harrison Burlington, a wealthy nobleman, has tried to make her last days as comfortable as possible while trying to keep his love for her a secret. After a miraculous recovery for both of them, they are still searching for the source of the holy water and the whereabouts of Ellen’s sister and father. But evil thwarts their plans and puts everyone in danger. They ponder if they are worthy caretakers of this secret. “In their quest for the holy water, had they unearthed something God had not wanted them to disturb? While healing and health were incredible gifts, was healing always the best course, or did the suffering and hardship that came with disease serve a purpose, too.” Lots of intrigue in this well written time travel tale. The main characters shine with their selflessness. Harrison is the best kind of hero. He is kind, thoughtful and has integrity. And Ellen has some self realization as she grows closer to Harrison: “Courage. Instead of always giving up or running away in fear, maybe it was time to pray that she could face the uncertainty of the future with courage.” Suspend belief and enjoy this captivating book! *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell through Interviews and Reviews. A superbly written dual time novel encompassing the world of Ringling Brother’s Circus and the colorful characters from the 1939 social scene in Sarasota, Florida. Although not what I was expecting, I was pleasantly surprised by this story of love lost and found and the repercussions of a scandal that effected several generations. It was very interesting to see what process the character of Chloe Whitfield used in researching a new book. “One of the reasons she liked writing historical fiction was the opportunity to walk where others had walked in earlier times.” But when a personal connection comes to light, it just got better and better. The characters were thoroughly engaging, from Nardo and Lucy, Cloe and Ian to their friends and relatives. Ms. Scmidt adeptly wove the two time lines together and I was very pleased by the ultimate connections, and romances progressed at a natural pace. Proposing Mischief

Just the chuckle I needed! “She thought she could sneak away from the consequences of her actions for just half an hour, but consequences and bad decisions were not finished with her.” Farm girl Maisie is cute as a button and can do most anything including get into trouble. After choosing the wrong beaux, she realizes his character and is forced by her family to keep out of his way. But she feels cooped up on the farm. Out fixing fences near a mine, she gets snoopy and removes boards from a nailed up entrance to a mine shaft to go exploring. Not only does she find a beautiful hidden cave, she finds the owner, Bragg Boone. They both marvel at God’s handiwork and agree that this discovery must be shared. Boone asks her to strike a deal to help him save his failing mine. A marriage of convenience for these two Christians makes for some interesting interactions. Lots of funny scenes, especially when Maisie and Boone play such games as hide the crystal, arm wrestling or walk on stilts. They grow closer and Boone has found in Maisie: “A rich treasure hidden beneath a rough surface. He was growing fonder of that type of treasure day by day.” Funny and heartwarming, the mischief was refreshing and an all around good time. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. After She Falls

This debut novel was a bit out of my comfort zone. I would never imagine me reading a book about women competing in Mixed Marshal Arts. A few things I was not fond of: the story is told in third person present which was awkward for me. Another was the descriptions of drinking, dancing and kissing were a little too graphic for me. But the author portrayed her characters realistically. They are flawed and growing in their Christian faith. The lady knows her stuff about MMA fights and I could picture the bouts like a movie in my head. My favorite character was Uncle Roman. He is forever loving and accepting of his niece Adri. He dispenses wisdom but does not push. “Reconciliation with God can lead to reconciliation with people, too. God does not want you to love Him and just forget about your neighbor.” After a slow start, I wanted to continue to read to see what would happen when Adri went back to fighting and where her relationship with Max would end up. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House and Open Book BPH. Elinor: A Riveting Story Based on the Lost Colony of Roanoke
by
Shannon McNear
Polly
, December 10, 2021
Well researched and rich in detail about Early America in the late 1500s, this novel proposed what could have happened to the lost Colony of Roanoke, Virginia. Ms. McNear has represented the time period very well from the vivid descriptions of the New World to the dialects of both the colonists and the native people. Elinor, is a brave, resolute woman who endures much hardship but is constantly comforted by her memorized scripture. Her father encouraged her: “Read it now, daughter, while there is yet time and opportunity. You know not when you may need it, laid up like treasure in your heart, when there is not the written Word to come to.” A favorite part was the baptism ceremony of Manteo a native who had come to Christ. The liturgy was very similar to our Lutheran service of baptism. I found it fascinating to read the scripture passages as they were taken from the Great Bible translation of 1539. This epic story is reminiscent of The Last of The Mohicans by Cooper but infinitely more readable. There are many spiritual lessons to take away: God keeps his people and loves and guides them. God uses Christians in many ways by their words and their behavior to bring others to Salvation. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour on behalf of the author. The Debutante's Code
by
Erica Vetsch

, December 01, 2021
This is Erica Vetsch at her very best. Absolutely everything that I love in a Regency mystery is in this story. It is satisfying, yet it whets my appetite for more. What is a debutante to do when she returns home after seven years to find her parents gone? She doesn’t know if they are in danger or just too preoccupied to care about her. When Juliette and Uncle Bertie are present at events where items are stolen, they are suspected by a detective, Daniel Swann. “The detective was handsome and interesting...and dangerous. He stirred in Juliette feelings of excitement tinged with guilt. His purpose was to dig out secrets and hers was to keep them hidden.” Daniel has secrets of his own that have direct bearing on his past and his future. Full of intrigue and clues to keep you guessing, this was an excellent start to a new series. I loved the disguises and the codes hidden in unlikely places, it reminded me of a Sherlock Holmes mystery. The characters were interesting and well represented. The plot was complex but moved at a pace that kept me turning pages. With one mystery solved, there are still things unfinished, namely what is going to happen on Daniel’s next birthday? His fate awaits in the next book. Too bad I have to wait til next year to find out! *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel as a participant in the I Read With Audra Jennings book tour. It was lovely to return to Widow’s Peak Creek at Christmas time for a story about Leah and Benton who are given joint ownership of an old Victorian house and must plan and execute a gala event there. The Gingerbread Gala has been a high point of the holiday celebration in the town but was suspended when the homeowner went into a retirement home. Leah and Benton have been tasked with resurrecting the tradition. As they repair and spruce up the house and plan the gala, they grow closer. Leah, a nurse and Benton, a pastor, have their share of obstacles. Leah needs a solution to the care of her grandmother and Benton is trying to serve his parishioners while also trying to live down past memories. Could the solutions come as they work to give the town a memorable Christmas? And could romance bloom in this cute Christmas tale? Well plotted with relatable characters that you care about. A solid faith foundation that shows us that caring for family can be rewarding and reconciliation is important. *I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author. Behind Love's Wall

, November 23, 2021
I once visited Mackinac Island and was mesmerized by the beauty and history there. I long to go back. I am so glad I get to visit anew when I read a book by Carrie Fancet Pagels. This dual time book made it doubly amazing because I saw it through two sets of eyes, in 1895 and 2020. “God could set aside the past and heal their hearts. And there were new beginnings.” Not only did Ms. Pagels do an incredible job weaving the two storylines together through an old journal, she also tied this book to others she has written. Both historical and modern settings capture the unique flavor of the island. The characters were well drafted and highly interesting. Willa and Lily are both looking for clues to their parentage and are hiding secrets about their pasts. “The wall that she had built around her heart was beginning to feel less like cement and more like an evergreen hedgerow. And those could be trimmed and even cut down.” They learn that building walls rarely helps things and to uncover the truth can set them free. Using her expertise, Ms Pagels also sheds light on psychological problems, as well as medical ailments that can masquerade as mental issues. This story was deftly layered and the plot was extremely intriguing. I loved the whole thing! *I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Spectacular WWI intrigue. I love peeking into the world created by Kate Breslin. Especially since this book encompasses a lot of my favorite things. It is an interesting, inspirational, historical book with likable characters and a very engaging, mysterious plot. It reminds me of old Hitchcock films The 39 Steps based on a book by Scottish author John Buchan or The Saboteur by Joseph Conrad. Fascinating details include pilots in WWI and girls and ladies who worked in munitions plants in Scotland and England. Very informative and even scary. This book focused on family connections showing the close and faith-filled Baird family contrasted with the distant, broken and harsh family that Rosalind came from. The lessons on friendship and trust played out well. I especially enjoyed the switched identities and the spy aspects of the story, with its tense and exciting scenes. One favorite thing was the Scots accent of Alex and his family. It was just right and not overdone. The whole novel fit together perfectly and made me smarter about one of my favorite times in history. One of the best reads of the year for me. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. “Evil wouldn’t let her forget that it existed, even for a day.” As a criminal psychologist, Erin Larson thought she knew about the criminal mind. But what she doesn’t know about her past suddenly catches up to her when multiple attempts on her life occur. Helping former boyfriend, Detective Nathan Campbell, with a cold case he is working on gets very personal. His detective father has been shot and Nathan needs to find out why. I liked the way Erin and Nathan always relied on God to protect them and offered instant prayers when they felt danger encroaching. With past paced action, this is a thrilling story that has many threads that finally came together in an exciting conclusion. You need to put your thinking caps on for this one! It is like watching a Bruce Willis or Duane Johnson dangerous adventure movie. Lots of action and an evil back story with a great romance. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. Mary Connealy has wrapped up her Bothers in Arms series with an exciting conclusion. This time it was brother Wyatt who woos Molly Garner. We finally get answers to what was going on with Oliver Hawkins at his ranch and family secrets and connections become clear. With humor, Ms Connealy showcases the women and their various skills from cooking to shooting. The theme of the story is how to honor God while trying to honor dishonorable parents. As always, faith drives the brothers and their wives and Godly principles are shown throughout the story. The family connections in this series were a bit hard to understand at the beginning but that added to the suspense and was interesting to unravel. What started out as wary, surprise kinfolk ended up as a tight knit family living out their faith in harmony. If you like cowboy adventures, be sure and read Brothers in Arms. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. Ainsley Beaumont has arrived in her hometown of Natchez to work a case for the district Park Ranger. A teen has been murdered on the Trace. Then someone trains their sights on Ainsley. She and Ranger Linc Steele were very close years ago before Ainsley chose a singing career over staying in Natchez. Now with that career behind her, Ainsley has a job that she loves as a law enforcement Ranger. While Linc and she are working together on the case, things heat up and now Ainsley’s life is in danger. Lots of twists and turns and multiple suspects. The excitement does not let up. The book kept me turning pages trying to guess who the culprits were. The characters were interesting and well drawn. I liked the dynamics between Ainsley, her grandmother and great aunt. The missing 1870s diary was an interesting focal point. The message of reconciliation between Ainsley and her dad and counting on God during the tough times rang true. The reconnection with Linc was realistic and provided just the right romantic touch. I have enjoyed the Natchez Trace series so far. I am so glad there will be a book four! *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing on behalf of the author. In the thrilling book 2 of The Quantico Files, we not only have another story about Alex Donovan but we meet up with the famous Kaely Quinn from a previous series. This was a fresh and intricately layered story of a diabolical UNSUB that the FBI team is trying to profile in hopes of aiding local law enforcement. “He’s the puppet master who expects his puppets to act out his plan perfectly.” Ms. Mehl manages to wow us with her seriously bad guys and gets her protagonists into impossible situations but the way they get out of their predicaments and solve their problems is always interesting and highly entertaining. I especially like the characters of Alex and Logan and how they grew in their spiritual journey, learning to rely on God through the really tough times. I always enjoy anything to do with Quantico, FBI and other agencies. This book series deals with the Behavioral Analysis Unit and profiling. I am looking forward to the third book in this absorbing, dramatic series. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. Wow what an up-to-the-minute, suspenseful story. I loved getting to know the gang at SNAP Agency as they team with CIA analyst Brynn Taylor. The problem is that Brynn has a history with team member Jack Hudson and when they last saw each other, it wasn’t pretty. They agree to work together to find an Egyptian spy who is missing on US soil. Oh the scary and subversive things they discover. And it is more widespread than they thought. While they are tracking down suspects and uncovering clues, Jack and Brynn are forced to confront their awkward parting. They are both Christians but still find it difficult to connect. Jack: “When our trust lies in the control we think we have, we are saying we don’t trust in the One who is completely in control and completely good.” When it came down to a critical time, Brynn realized that God was her anchor and held her firmly in His hands. The addition of a Princess Bride Movie birthday party was a great break in the tension. Dramatically told story of everything I like in modern suspense: Danger, romance, faith, a quirky but lovable cast of characters and a what-if that could certainly happen today! *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing on behalf of the author. The Wish Book Christmas

This book was filled with my childhood memories. As a post war baby, i was two when this story takes place. I am very familiar with the Sears Wish Book, the TV shows and toys of the era. We even had a Buick Roadmaster in baby blue with a white top. And I had a Davy Crockett outfit instead of Roy Rogers. “We each owe a debt that we can never repay. But God has reached down from heaven to pay it for us by giving us the gift of Jesus.” Ms. Austin captured the excitement and childish joy of the two five year old boys, Harry and Bobby. It was fun to watch what they and their mothers were up to since meeting them in If I Were You. The author used the relationship of Eve and Audrey to show how people can forgive, change for the better and have a fresh start with new goals. I liked the way the mothers tried to get the boys to refocus the their wants into doing something special for someone in need. A lesson we could all learn. A highlight was the Christmas Play with all the shenanigans but a true message of Christ came through. A great book filled with the real spirit of Christmas. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale Publishers on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. Bootlegging, speakeasies, flappers, KDKA Pittsburgh and hidden identities. Ms. McDaniel takes us to the underworld of 1920s Pittsburgh in this suspenseful tale about a daughter looking for her father. It is aptly releasing on the 101st Anniversary of the radio station, KDKA. Kate Chamberlin travels from Italy to Pittsburgh to search for her father whom she has not seen for 17 years. Is he the papa she remembers or are the rumors true that he is a mobster? After she receives a cryptic note, private detective Rhett Jennings becomes her protector, little knowing that their pasts are connected. Through all the confusion and danger, Kate holds on to her faith. “God, You are my hiding place. The prayer had become like a mending lyric to the broken melody in her heart.” An intricate and interesting story where things are not what they seem to be. Polished and well plotted with excitement, romance and a faith thread permeating it all. You will cheer when it comes to a thrilling conclusion. Lost in Darkness

Michelle Griep

, October 30, 2021
Michelle Griep has gone over to the dark side and embraces a Gothic tale in her latest book Lost in Darkness. It is 1815 and medical practices are somewhat barbaric and experimental. Mr. Peckwood, a surgeon, especially embodies the seedy side of Regency Era medicine. Amelia Balfour, a travel writer, has come home to see that her father’s last wishes are fulfilled. Her brother, Colin, suffering from a deformity, needs an operation. The upshot is that her late father contracted Mr. Peckwood to perform it. Graham Lambert, a former Navy surgeon, seeks out Mr. Peckwood based on his reputation as a forward thinker and meets Amelia and her brother. His quest to further his career changes when the case takes a personal turn. As dark and difficult this story is, it conveys hope. Colin, despite his challenges, has great faith. “God’s arm is not shortened that He cannot save. And He is my Salvation, no matter the outcome of tomorrow’s procedure.” The cast of characters are varied and each one contributes nicely to the story. Two older women, Mrs. O and Mrs. Bapp, add wisdom to the spiritual journeys of Amelia and Graham, as well as a legacy from Graham’s mother written in an old Bible. And the surprise appearance of Mary Shelley is a bonus. Well written book that teaches great spiritual truth. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. In book two of Colorado Cowboys, we see Flynn McQuaid driving a herd of cattle for his brother from Independence, Missouri to a ranch in Fairplay, Colorado. Along the way he comes on a group of scientists who are cataloging plants for the Smithsonian. Among them are botanists Linnea, a young widow, and her grandfather, Dr. Howell. After rescuing Linnea, Flynn agrees to act as a bodyguard and the two groups join for the rest of the journey. Flynn: “ When he agreed to guard her, he never bargained on having to guard his heart.” As much as they try to keep things businesslike, Flynn and Linnea are drawn to each other. Linnea loves plants. They point her to a God of creation, a God who cares for her. “Whenever she considered God’s exquisite design of something so small as a blade of grass or the petal of a flower, she was always able to put her life in better perspective.” Lots of realism, adventure and danger on the Sante Fe Trail. A realism that included fighting an attraction, dealing with fears and ultimately relying on God for their care. They learned a lesson on reconciliation and forgiveness. Hilarious! “God was enough-everything else was a gift.” Tandy and Marissa are at it again! Trouble just seems to follow these two best friends. This has been such a cute and sassy series. It is days before the wedding of Marissa and Conner but all stops as Conner is suspected of murder in the corn maze! Marissa, Tandy and their friends do all they can to prove his innocence. With less than favorite relatives in town for the wedding, and quirky residents of the nearby retirement village, chaos ensues. The setting at Halloween/Harvest time lends to the hilarity with Scary-oke at the cafe the girls share, the corn maze and the door decorating at the retirement home. My favorite resident was Birdie, a retired spy with dementia who steals cookies, cell phones and your heart! I love the way she handled Winnifred’s illness and gave her a joyful spirit and entertained us with belting out songs and naming her wigs. It is hard to believe that Ms. Strong wrote this book in the middle of a cancer diagnosis and treatment. The author can write comedy to a T. She embodies the grace of God and resilience. Any Irene Hannon novel is a suspense delight. I lived in the St. Louis suburbs for 20 years, I always take a trip down memory lane as I read each book and look for familiar places. This time it was Hanks Cheesecake which I drove past on my way to work. Nathaniel Bakery is near where I lived and was on my shopping route. Tony’s was in downtown Clayton where I went to the bank and library. Nostalgic to say the least. Cate Reilly, a County Detective, reluctantly goes undercover as a student in a posh school for girls on the western outskirts of the City. When she meets up with Zeke Sloan, also undercover for DEA, things get interesting. Cate and Zeke have a history and their parting 8 years ago was very hurtful, so this case could make or break their tenuous relationship. How are they going to work together to solve their cases of a missing teen couple and a possible drug ring? Are their cases even connected? As the story unfolds, and they ferret out the bad guys, the tension ramps up and unpredictable things happen. Ms. Hannon is very adept at crafting taut, believable characters in settings that I recognize. As always, the culprits get dealt with, the romance heats up and faith lessons are learned. I enjoyed the relationship Cate had with her sisters and the new friend she made in Kayla. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell through Interviews and Reviews. This intriguing story captured my interest. An heiress shunning her wealth and the machinations of her grasping father, comes to a remote place to make her own way in the world as a Harvey Girl. The author writes a determined heroine, Emma Grace, as she uses her wits to fit in with the working class. Ray Watkins has a new-found faith and although he is in training to take over the business from his wealthy father, he longs to put his money to a higher use, helping the less fortunate. Ray visits El Tovar Hotel where Emma is a Harvey Girl. There is interest there but Emma wants nothing to do with the rich men who seem to be about nothing but amassing more money and power. Mystery arrives in the form of threatening notes and troubling inquiries. Someone is looking for Emma Grace, Lots of interesting details about El Tovar and Hopi House, an attraction that houses an expensive art collection. The blossoming romance is sweet and Emma learns to trust and make friends among her fellow workers. Emma learns to put her trust in God as she relies on the verse: “ I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” The secondary characters are notable as some support and some thwart the hero and heroine. I am anxious to see what is next in Secrets Of The Canyon. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. It is just after the Normandy Invasion ; journalist Nellie Wilkerson wants to be at the front of the action to bring the truth to the Americans back home. After sneaking her way into France, she finds herself behind enemy lines and witnessing much more than she bargained for. “What is more important is that I captured the entire story in one shot. And that was my intention. So that, without a single word, the world would know what Hitler is doing. And that there is hope in the midst of the evil of this world.” Teaming with resistance fighter Jean-Paul, they come upon Claire, a frightened, Mongoloid child hiding from the dreaded Germans. They find refuge at a convent with three nuns. They learn much about their faith and hope from an elderly Sister, Maria-Theresa. “This suffering is meant to make our souls long for heaven. This world wearies us and weighs us down. Oh, but there is another world where we will never be weary and where we will never long for anything better.” There is much danger as they all flee to Switzerland . Ms Tolsma showcases the real heroes and heroines of WWII as she tells the story of Nellie, Jean-Paul, Claire and their companions. The real people and real-life situations are woven seamlessly into the journey from oppression, as well as a journey of faith. What seems like hopelessness turns into a hope for the future. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*

“This drought, this depression...we are in blackness. We can either shine in the dark or be overcome by it. Sometimes shining means staying. Sometimes it means going. But it never mans to quit.” This is a story of two sisters during the Dust Bowl of 1933. Melissa who stayed in dry, dusty Oklahoma and Kathryn who set out for Indianapolis and the hope for a better future. This is the debut novel by Jennifer L. Wright. The author writes with dramatic prose that puts you right there with Kathryn and her gut wrenching journey, trying to reconnect with her father. Melissa’s life is no less harrowing as she exchanges poverty for seeming affluence in the middle of dwindling resources. Melissa has to contend with an abusive husband and hide all for appearances sake. Both women are strong in different ways. Theauthor portrays them as totally believable and shows how God is in their midst no matter what. “For so long I had focused on what I lacked, what had been taken from me — while God had been trying to show me what had always and would always remain: Him.” I liked the way The Wizard of Oz was usedto connect the sisters even though they were far apart. Thank you Ms. Wright for giving us a look at a troubling time in our history and a story of hope in God. *I won a copy of this book from the author through ACFW Book Club. Based on the fairytale, The Ugly Duckling, this is a medieval tale of a wronged heroine and a flawed hero who comes to her rescue. While both are dependent on God, they still have some healing to do. For Audrey: “ She wanted to fulfill a purpose...she felt very strongly that there was something she was supposed to do, a good work God had planned for her to do since before she was born.” For Edwin: Striving to be the best lord for the people under his domain, to be a better ruler than his father. For both: calling on God for help when all looked bleak and finding refuge in Him. It is told in an easy to understand, fairytale-like way, with recognizable evil, a touching romance, some danger and a happily ever after. *I won this book from Goodreads in April 2021. “White tufts of clouds lay like sheep in the valley below. Rivers wound silver through the hills on their way to the blue waters of Puget Sound.” Ms. Scott brings the beauty of Mt. Rainier to the page in a tale of a determined woman. Cora wants to do something extraordinary in the name of Women’s Voting Rights. She also does not want to marry the disreputable man that her mother has chosen for her. If she makes the difficult climb to the summit of Mt. Rainier, she will not have to marry Cash Kincaid. Nathan Hardee is a mystery. He was once part of Tacoma society but now just longs to escape bad memories by living high in the mountains. He agrees to guide Cora and her stepfather Winston on the climb. The characters come to life and some favorites are Winston, the stepfather who has Cora’s best interests at heart and supports her. And Waldo, friend and mentor to Nathan and a bit of a matchmaker. There are dangers to be found, not to mention an interfering mother and an unwelcome suitor. But there is also beauty of creation and a time to rely on God. Cora: “Thank you, Lord, for all this, for allowing me to see, to feel. It is truly a view most glorious.” This is my favorite from this series American Wonders. *I won this book from Library Thing. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*

The Lines Between Us
by

Told through the eyes of Dorie and Gordon, sprinkled with letters and documents, this novel shows more than things unspoken between the lines of a letter. It shows what the lines are between differing convictions and when those lines can be crossed. I was drawn in immediately by the writing style and subject of the home front during WWII and the alternate roles taken up by conscientious objectors. I grew up in a denomination that espoused these views. My uncle, a trained minister, was exempt during the war. However, my father, after a soul searching discussion with my uncle, enlisted and served in China, Burma, India. Years later, during Vietnam, my cousin was a CO and served in a mental health hospital in our home town. Most of my friends and my future husband were either drafted or enlisted. Ms Green opened up the world of smoke jumpers and how COs and forestry personnel interacted. The characters were well-drawn and the tension between them were believable. Dorie, the WAC sister of Jack, was spunky, tenacious and reminded me of Nancy Drew. Not only does Ms. Green tackle the sticky situation of convictions, she addresses segregation and women’s roles in war. The story is well rounded. Humor, mystery and danger are used to great advantage. I will be reading more by this author. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Reviewers. by

Delightful trio of stories with great bonuses: a Baby Jesus devotional, a nice summary of traditions and two sweet recipes. A TEXAS CHRISTMAS CAROL Clever Texas Twist on an old favorite. Great play on names. Evan has a heart that has turned hard and cynical but Felicity is determined to thaw it. Watch as a beautiful transformation takes place, and for the true meaning of Christmas to shine through. AN ARCHER FAMILY CHRISTMAS A family Christmas gathering turns into a fight for the life of a newborn and hope for Cass and Jim Archer. The author once again brings faith and family together and shows the Archer clan can pose a formidable united front. GIFT OF THE HEART Reminiscent of the story of Ruth and Boaz. Widow Ruth with her small daughter, Naomi, starts a new life in a resort town as a cook. The only thing of value she has is an heirloom brooch that she uses for collateral. Resort owner Bo keeps it for her in exchange for rent on a cottage . Ms. Witemeyer spins a beautiful Christmas time story of new beginnings with wit and romance. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. Hostile Intent

I have not read a Lynette Eason book that I have not loved. This fourth book in the series Danger Never Sleeps reminds me of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with its cast of characters from FBI, CIA and other agencies. It is another thrilling story with cameos of characters from previous books. I like that this group of friends is there for each other when one needs support, be it physical, spiritual or emotional. This was a wild ride for Ava and Caden, childhood friends who are becoming closer as they track a killer. The story was fast-paced with lots of action and many questions to be answered, along with interesting information about puzzles, hacking, and what makes a criminal tick. Ava and Caden try their best to thwart the person who is after Ava and seek to outwit him before he succeeds in kidnapping her. But other emergencies get in the way and the killer will not let up! Fantastic ending to a terrific series that cements Ms. Eason as an all time favorite author. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell through Interviews and Reviews.
