Celebrate Short Story Month: 7 Recommendations Based on 7 Collections We Love
(0 comment)
I love short story collections because of how much they manage to do with so little. They can dilate, expand, shatter, constellate. Within any given collection, you can move from the moon to a diner after midnight to that liminal minute right when you wake up but are still knee-deep in a dream..

Arbornaut: A Life Discovering the Eighth Continent in the Trees Above Us
by
Meg Lowman

, November 06, 2021
Must read for young females. The book is meant for adults but very inspirational for older teens. Meg discusses her journey to be one of the first two scientists to climb into the canopies of forests around the world. She educates about trees throughout the book with educational chapters on specific species and on different research of hers throughout the book. She discusses the challenges of being a female scientist in a male-dominated field, that only just started to open up to females when her career started. She discusses the me-too movement and how she actively works to open up the STEM field, especially with "arbornauts", to females and minorities. Finally, she puts emphasis on climate change and the work she has done to try and slow the change. The chapters tend to bounce around but readers can still keep track. Definitely recommend.
