by
Carla Lalli Music
Carrie
, January 27, 2023
This book is the definition of elevated simplicity. Learn solid techniques, learn how to "spin it" (substitute ingredients to get more variety out of a single recipe) and use simple quality ingredients to make satisfying, delicious, and healthy(!) meals. Great for cooks of all levels.

Water Will Come Rising Seas Sinking Cities & the Remaking of the Civilized World
by
Jeff Goodell
Carrie
, January 27, 2023
Extremely readable, well-reported, and like most climate books, fairly upsetting. Still, it is an excellent resource on the current and future impact of climate change on the world's most vulnerable coastlines.

I didn't just read this book, I savored it. I found quiet moments to absorb it, ponder it, plan wishful vacations around it, one wonderful chapter at a time.

I kept seeing rave reviews about this book. Sand? Really?? They were not wrong! Highly entertaining and informative! I have a new respect for this humble (and limited) grain.

How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States
by
Daniel Immerwahr
Carrie
, January 26, 2023
This book is so good I've read it twice! I learned so much, and even the most mundane topics (standards & practices, anyone?) were somehow incredibly compelling. Immerwahr is an excellent writer. This will fill a lot of gaps left out of schools!

Fire in Paradise: An American Tragedy
by
Alastair Gee and Dani Anguiano
Carrie
, January 26, 2023
My elderly mother was evacuated from the Camp fire by a kind neighbor and came to stay with me for 3 months. The fire missed her house by 1500 ft. When I took her home, seeing the devastation firsthand was overwhelming. Gee's well written book is intense, personal, a staggering read.

This book is devastating and beautiful and powerful. It made me want to re-examine my life and my work and my privilege and point myself in the direction of the things that light me up inside while simultaneously making me so grateful for everything good in my life. I really loved this one - one of my favorite books of 2021 for sure.
