Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Dovekeepers

Alice Hoffman is a gifted writer whose sense of place and character is so strong that I felt I was watching from a doorway. She writes about a history 2000 years old but the issues and concerns are contemporary. You might think you know about Masada. The story has been told. I thought I knew a lot. But only Hoffman has written about the people that lived there. Who doesn’t harbor remorse, yearn for love, seek justice, hope for a safe place to sleep each night? The plight of these women resonates. I wanted all of them to survive. I’ve recommended this book many times, and everyone who’s read it agrees that it’s a gripping and enchanting story. Absolutely my favorite book of 2012.

River Midnight
by
Lilian Nattel

I'm reading this book for the 3rd time, and enjoying it as much as the first. In fact, I'm reading it more slowly, the better to savor the story. Lilian Nattel is a gifted writer whose words don't paint a picture - they sculpt a world. This book is considered historical fiction, and that's what originally drew my attention to it. But what keeps me reading it is that the depth of the characters and the scope of the location are fascinating to see through her words. Nattel's story winds around and around, telling more and more about one year in the lives of ordinary and extraordinary people in a tiny shtetl in the 1800's. Just when something appears imbued with magic, commonness shows through. Unremarkable characters do the most wondrous of things. Tattered angels make grievous errors. The river itself winds through everyone's life, threatening death and offering escape. Nattel respects her readers enough to get us to the edge of so many precarious places and then she leaves us there. We must determine the ultimate conclusions, just as we must in life. As I read what I write, it sounds maudlin. Fortunately the book rises above my enthusiasm. If you love to read, you will love this book.
