Womens Work The First Twenty Thousand Years
by
Elizabeth Wa Barber

This book will "broad-en" (excuse the pun!)everyone's ideas about women's history. Textile artists, fashion designers, costume historians and the general public alike will enjoy this look at how women, throughout the ages, contributed to human existence through their manufacture of fabric and clothing. I particularly like the second chapter, "The String Revolution," which depicts the invention of string around 20,000 B.C. I used it as a reference in an article I wrote about bellydance costume. String skirts of of the Palaeolithic and later times advertised that the ladies sporting them were in some sense available as brides. Modern bellydance costume certainly reflects this ancient allure with its belts made of long string, fringes and beading.

Field Guide to the Little People: A Curious Journey Into the Hidden Realm of Elves, Faeries, Hobgoblins & Other Not-So-Mythical Creatures
by
Nancy Arrowsmith
clairePA
, July 06, 2011
If your only exposure to elfin lore is "The Lord of the Rings" or "Grimm's Fairy Tales" then you need to read this book and get educated! Nancy Arrowsmith's classic work on the fairy folk of Europe is delightful-- and disturbing, too. The Little People, interestingly enough, often reflect the human culture of their lands. Who came first? We suspect the fairy folk did.

Time To Be Holy Reflecting On Daily Life
by
Swami Sivananda Radha
clairePA
, June 15, 2011
There's a lot of food for thought in "Time to be Holy," a collection of talks by Swami Sivananda Radha. She discusses the ways to become a truly enlightened person, and touches on the things that impede this task. We are asked to examine our lives more carefully and objectively, to question our long-cherished beliefs and desires, and draw conclusions about who we really are from within ourselves, not from our family or society. I will read this book, choosing a topic at random, to help give me some perspective on my life and actions. Very helpful and bracing!

Practice of Dream Healing Bringing Ancient Greek Mysteries Into Modern Medicine
by
Edward Tick
clairePA
, June 15, 2011
Dr. Tick has visited the places where the cult of the ancient Greek god of healing, Asklepios, was known. From his travels with groups seeking healing at these sites, and his own research into the dream incubation practices of the Greeks, he comes up with a method modern people can use today for their health and well-being. He himself describes his own healing done in the manner of the devotees of Asklepios, with dream incubation at home. For those interested in alterative methods of medicine, and for those who work with their dreams, Dr. Tick's book is a guide and a revelation.

I use this book in my dreamwork classes. It's a basic and thorough guide to the dream realm, and it is no nonsense, something you don't often find in this genre. Use this book especially if you are doing dream interpretation on your own. DK Living is a terrific publisher!

Michael Chabon

Michael Chabon's first novel is very funny and bittersweet. Every one of the characters is fully drawn and developed. Using Pittsburgh as the setting of the novel enhances the novel's freshness and originality. This is a book you'll savor over and over again.

Burr
by
Gore Vidal
clairePA
, June 15, 2011
If you want your early American history told in a pleasurable and knowledgeable way Gore Vidal's your man. Using the figure of Aaron Burr as the basis of the novel, Vidal levels down such giants as Washington and Jefferson to human scale and also brings us a lively view of New York City in the early nineteenth century.
