I Capture the Castle
by
Dodie Smith

An absolutely charming read! Smith creates a vivid picture of an eccentric family struggling to survive in their falling-down home. The relationships between the sisters is touching and their plot to help their father very amusing. I really wish [a]Dodie Smith[/a] (101 Dalmations) had written another adult novel.

Companion

Susan Squires

I'm usually not a big fan of [kw]Regency [/kw]era novels, but this book by [a]Susan Squires [/a]is a real page-turner. Squires has done her homework, so no anachronistic bloopers come screaming at you. Elizabeth has trained as an archeologist under her father, spending time in ancient ruins and libraries. She's a marvelous heroine: smart, independent, brave, and a misfit in the society she now must live in. The [kw]vampire[/kw] twist is innovative. I'd give this a five except that the torture scenes go on for two long. Graceful writing and exciting action.

Devil Wears Prada

This is one of the best titles evah, but I couldn't force myself to finish this book. The writing was dull, and the characters were uninteresting sketches. Perhaps this is enough for people who want gossip about Anna Wintour, aka, Miranda Priestly.

A Confederacy of Dunces

If I could give this more stars, I would. One of the great works of American writing, a [kw]comic masterpiece[/kw]. [kw] Ignatius J. Reilly [/kw]is an oversized, outlandish, eccentric hero as he navigates various jobs in [kw]New Orleans[/kw]. It really is a love letter to the city, too. A beautifully crafted plot, outrageous characters, marvelous dialect, and wacky scenarios make this a novel that you can read more than once.

[kw]Kitty[/kw], a DJ at a radio station, was once brutally attacked and became a [kw]werewolf[/kw]. She's still trying to figure out how to live her life, and trying not to lose her humanity. Her [kw]radio show[/kw] becomes an advice line for creatures of the night and those who love them. Kitty's also standing up for the rights of weres and others. A series of gruesome crimes, a mysterious caller to her radio show, and Kitty's got to act fast to stop more violence and the retribution that will follow. [kw]Funny[/kw], action-packed, but poignant, too. I've got her next book in my reading stack.

by

I love Christopher Moore's novels and this is one of my favorites. [kw]Hilarious [/kw]story about a young woman who gets bitten by a [kw]vampire[/kw], handed a wad of cash, and left of figure out how to survive in modern day [kw]San Francisco[/kw]. Luckily for her, an intrepid grocery store clerk becomes her ally. No one who reads this will forget the [kw]Frozen Turkey Bowling[/kw]. Clear prose, crazy set-ups, intriguing characters, well-plotted, fast-paced action -- what is not to love about Christopher Moore's novels?

Happy Hour At Casa Dracula
by

[kw]Hilarious [/kw]and touching story about feisty, funny Milagro De Los Santos, a girl who can't seem to get a break. She's got a degree from a Fancy University (F.U.), but has terrible jobs, a terrible apartment, and terrible parents. When she goes to a book party for her big money ex-boyfriend, he shuns her. Milagro leaves with an attractive guest, Oswald, who says he's in publishing. A few passionate kisses later and there's an accidental exchange of blood. Milagro gets sick, really sick, weird sick. Craving raw meat sick. Her ex tries to kidnap Milagro, claiming she's infected with "vampirism." She's forced to hide out with Oswald's family at their country house. They think she's a golddigger and she's wondering, are [kw]vampires[/kw] real? As for Oswald, oh, he forgot to tell her that he's engaged to a beautiful and accomplished doctor. Fast-moving, well written, [kw]laugh out loud funny[/kw], sexy, and moving. I wanted to hang out with [kw]Milagro [/kw]and the whole vampire family.
