From Powells.com
Ludwig Bemelmans published his first children's book, Madeline,
in 1939. Reader's tall and small so loved his diminutive heroine
so fearless, so fetching, so French Bemelmans wrote and illustrated
four sequels starring his puerile Parisian. When McCall's magazine
commisioned Bemelmans to create an insert for their 1956 Christmas issue,
Madeline was already a superstar of children's literature. Restored and published in book form in 1985, Madeline's Christmas combines
the same lighthearted storytelling and whimsical illustration that first
made Madeline one of the most recognizable characters of the twentieth
century. Farley, Powells.com
