Staff Pick
Anyanwu is a shapeshifting woman who embodies love and healing, and Doro is a feared man who destroys those who oppose him or are no longer useful to him. Octavia E. Butler uses these two immortal characters to make you question everything you've learned about love, family, hatred, and power. This is by far the most intriguing science fiction novel I have ever read, and I was unable to put it down the first time I read it! Luckily, it is the prequel to a series called Patternist. Doro is an entity who changes bodies like clothes, killing his hosts by reflex -- or design. He fears no one -- until he meets Anyanwu. Anyanwu is a shapeshifter who can absorb bullets and heal with a kiss...and savage anyone who threatens those she loves. She fears no one -- until she meets Doro. From African jungles to the colonies of America, Doro and Anyanwu weave together a pattern of destiny that not even immortals can imagine.
