An invaluable guide to identifying, tying, and untying knots for every kind of outdoor adventure—from sailing, camping, and fishing to climbing, hunting, and survival
If you think you can tie up a package the same way you’d tie a bundle of firewood, or a hammock to a tree, or a canoe to the roof of a car . . . you probably need this book. With The Field Guide to Knots, you’ll learn to use a square knot for the package and a pole lashing for the firewood (and never the other way around!).
Veteran outdoorsman Bob Holtzman explains that behind every outdoor task is the perfect knot, one that makes the job quicker, easier—and safer. In this carefully curated guide to more than 80 knots, bends, hitches, loops, and lashings, he expertly helps readers choose and tie the right knot, with step-by-step color photos that are stunningly clear.
Last but not least—although often overlooked—Holtzman also includes instructions for untying every knot. After all, from changing a sail, to repositioning a climbing rope, to splicing a broken tent pole, untying a knot is often the very first step!
