In 1968, twenty-something Margaret Atwood married her first husband; in 1969 her first novel, The Edible Woman, was published. Not only is this a remarkable read in its own right, but it's my "first works" pick because of the incredible insight I felt it gave me about this important author's life. Readers could be disappointed if expecting another The Handmaid's Tale (for that, try Oryx and Crake) but anyone wishing to broaden their understanding of this writer will be rewarded.
