Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: December 2022 and January 2023 (0 comment)
It may be a new year, this may be a list of new books, but our love for literature in translation hasn’t changed at all, and we are so pleased to be enthusiastically recommending these recent releases. On this list, you’ll find a Spanish novel where controversy swirls around a Coca-Cola billboard...

Dave Cullen's examination of the tragic massacre at Columbine High School is heartbreaking (in ways both expected and unexpected) and emotionally difficult to read. But it's more important than ever that we read it anyway. In the two decades since Columbine, we've proven just how much we have to learn about the causes and effects of our rampage violence disease, and this book has something to teach. On April 20, 1999, two boys left an indelible stamp on the American psyche. Their goal was simple: to blow up their school, Oklahoma-City style, and to leave a lasting impression on the world. Their bombs failed, but the ensuing shooting defined a new era of school violence-irrevocably branding every subsequent shooting another Columbine.

When we think of Columbine, we think of the Trench Coat Mafia; we think of Cassie Bernall, the girl we thought professed her faith before she was shot; and we think of the boy pulling himself out of a school window — the whole world was watching him. Now, in a riveting piece of journalism nearly ten years in the making, comes the story none of us knew. In this revelatory book, Dave Cullen has delivered a profile of teenage killers that goes to the heart of psychopathology. He lays bare the callous brutality of mastermind Eric Harris, and the quavering, suicidal Dylan Klebold, who went to prom three days earlier and obsessed about love in his journal.

The result is an astonishing account of two good students with lots of friends, who came to stockpile a basement cache of weapons, to record their raging hatred, and to manipulate every adult who got in their way. They left signs everywhere, described by Cullen with a keen investigative eye and psychological acumen. Drawing on hundreds of interviews, thousands of pages of police files, FBI psychologists, and the boy's tapes and diaries, he gives the first complete account of the Columbine tragedy.

In the tradition of Helter Skelter and In Cold Blood, Columbine is destined to be a classic. A close-up portrait of hatred, a community rendered helpless, and the police blunders and cover-ups, it is a compelling and utterly human portrait of two killers — an unforgettable cautionary tale for our times.

Review

"Comprehensively nightmarish . . . Cullen's task is difficult not only because the events in question are almost literally unspeakable but also because even as he tells the story of a massacre that took the lives of 15 people, including the killers, he has to untell the stories that have already been told . . . Columbine is a necessary book. . . . The actual events of April 20, 1999, are exactly as appalling as you'd expect, and Cullen doesn't spare us a second of them." Time

Review

"Comprehensive...It's a book that hits you like a crime scene photo, a reminder of what journalism at its best is all about. Cullen knows his material from the inside; he covered Columbine, for Salon and Slate primarily, 'beginning around noon on the day of the attack.' But if this gives him a certain purchase on the story, his perspective is what resonates." LA Times

Review

"Cullen's book is a nerve-wracking, methodical and panoramic account...Columbine has its terrifying sections, particularly during Cullen's minute-by-minute rendering of the chaotic 49-minute assault. He puts us inside and outside the building, and he captures the disbelief viewers experienced in 'almost witnessing mass murder' live on television." Cleveland Plain Dealer

Review

"Cullen has authored a definitive history of Columbine...Columbine scrapes away the urban legends and popular analysis, and shows the reader clearly what happened.... Even while speaking hard truths, Cullen writes about the people of Columbine with compassion.” James Hart, New York Post

Review

"A chilling page-turner, a striking accomplishment given that Cullen's likely readers almost certainly know how the tragic story ends...I knew Cullen was a dogged reporter and a terrific writer, but even I was blown away by the pacing and story-telling he mastered in Columbine, a disturbing, inspiring work of art." Synopsis

EXPANDED WITH A NEW EPILOGUE
"The tragedies keep coming. As we reel from the latest horror . . . " So begins a new epilogue, illustrating how Columbine became the template for nearly two decades of "spectacle murders." It is a false script, seized upon by a generation of new killers. In the wake of Newtown, Aurora, and Virginia Tech, the imperative to understand the crime that sparked this plague grows more urgent every year.
What really happened April 20, 1999? The horror left an indelible stamp on the American psyche, but most of what we "know" is wrong. It wasn't about jocks, Goths, or the Trench Coat Mafia. Dave Cullen was one of the first reporters on scene, and spent ten years on this book-widely recognized as the definitive account. With a keen investigative eye and psychological acumen, he draws on mountains of evidence, insight from the world's leading forensic psychologists, and the killers' own words and drawings-several reproduced in a new appendix. Cullen paints raw portraits of two polar opposite killers. They contrast starkly with the flashes of resilience and redemption among the survivors.

It is fitting that I finished this book today, the 16th anniversary of the Columbine shootings. This is a story that deserves to be read. A truly amazing work of journalism. While a work of true crime non-fiction, the story unfolds much like a novel and is truly difficult to put down. Cullen has created a work that both informs and compels. I was surprised at how much I did not know about one of our country's most famous tragedies. I have to thank Mr. Cullen for such a well-penned and unbiased work. Highly recommended!

In 1999, two psychopathic students at Columbine High School went on a destructive rampage and killed 12 of their fellow classmates and one teacher in what at the time was considered the most horrendous school shooting spree in US history. Sadly, this title has passed onto other venues at Virginia Tech and Newtown Elementary. This books was both fascinating and frightening. Dave Cullen did an excellent job in weaving together the story of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the school administration, local law enforcement and the media. This book was frightening because of the ease with which these two students slipped into a darkness that only they inhabited, allowing counselors and psychologists treating them only enough space to think they were being successfully treated. Also, how easy it is to acquire guns, ingredients to make bombs, all while living at home and simply off the internet. This book reads as if a novel. Many times I found myself shouting out "They're hoarding guns, explosives, they are not being helped. Stop them now!!!". This book is a must read for any parent, administrator or law enforcement official to know what to do, what not to do, how to handle and how to react if any of these senseless tragedies occur again. As you read this book, open a dialogue with your child. Show them that trust is possible, that ferreting out the bad people is good. And once your done doing that, give them a big tight hug.

Not an easy subject, but one that is handled comprehesively, and with respect.

Not just a story about two damaged young men who decided that mass murder was a viable choice, but a study of trauma, memory, the media and all of its problems, corruption in law enforcement, religion, and 'the truth'.

The best thing about this book is the skillful choices Cullen makes; what he leaves out to tell the best story. He had me at a passage early in the book describing the principal at a gathering the week of the shooting there is now way a photo could have illustrated this image better: Mr. D buckled at the waist. He clutched his stomach and staggered around, turning his back to the audience, sobbing uncontrollably. His torso was parallel to the floor, shaking so hard it was visible from the last row.

After the media quited down about the shootings, people outside of Colorado, unless you knew someone involved, went on with their lives and didn't focus as much on this tradgedy. This book goes beyond the first week, or month after the shootings. Mr. Cullen tells of the investigation to find what went wrong to cause this and why so many lives were lost that day. People outside of Colorado never heard the rest of the story and Mr. Cullen helps fill in the blanks. Even though the story is very tragic, the book is very interesting
