Synopses & Reviews

Review

"You'll probably read this extraordinary book four times. The first time, you'll gobble it up. The second time, you'll savour it. The third time, you'll take notes in the margins. But the fourth time, the fourth time it will be part of you as you create the work you were ready to ship." — Seth Godin

Synopsis

The #1 New York Times bestseller.

"A gorgeous and inspiring work of art on creation, creativity, the work of the artist. It will gladden the hearts of writers and artists everywhere, and get them working again with a new sense of meaning and direction. A stunning accomplishment." --Anne Lamott

From the legendary music producer, a master at helping people connect with the wellsprings of their creativity, comes a beautifully crafted book many years in the making that offers that same deep wisdom to all of us.

"I set out to write a book about what to do to make a great work of art. Instead, it revealed itself to be a book on how to be." --Rick Rubin

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, as he has thought deeply about where creativity comes from and where it doesn't, he has learned that being an artist isn't about your specific output, it's about your relationship to the world. Creativity has a place in everyone's life, and everyone can make that place larger. In fact, there are few more important responsibilities.

The Creative Act is a beautiful and generous course of study that illuminates the path of the artist as a road we all can follow. It distills the wisdom gleaned from a lifetime's work into a luminous reading experience that puts the power to create moments--and lifetimes--of exhilaration and transcendence within closer reach for all of us.

As soon as I hear someone talking about 'The Universe' as if it is a sentient being that wants to make our lives better, I am skeptical. 'The Universe' is not sending anyone signs... there are no magical clues out there waiting for some special creative person to decipher. I hope this doesn't come across like I'm some stick-in-the-mud old man shouting at the kids on my block. I love fantasy, I love dreaming, I love magical realism, I love fanciful indolence. I just do not love people trying to tell other people that they have all this wisdom, all these answers - hey, just buy my book, buy my essential oils kit, follow my lifestyle technique for whole body and mind wellness... a.k.a. give me your money and I'll tell you the secrets. As creative people - I agree that everybody can be creative - we don't need a snake oil salesman, we need society at large to accept the fact that spending one's life doing this kind of stuff has value - both to ourselves individually but also to the society at large. One review of this book I read (by Michael Gonik) put it perfectly: "Working-class creatives aren't typically held up by the limits of their imagination. External factors - resources, upbringing, and the environment in which their work takes place - are far more frequent obstacles to maintaining a verdant and perpetually productive creative state." To me, that hits the nail on the head... I don't need a guru to tell me how to be imaginative... I just need food, shelter, and time.

Rick Rubin may be a talented record producer but he is a terrible writer. This book is worthless. When a book gets rave reviews from people like Anne Lamott, Russell Brand and Seth Godin, you should avoid it. Rubin has nothing of importance or even coherence to say.

This is the most intelligent and informed book on the creative process I have ever read. Rubin knows the process and how to make the most of it. The audio version is even better. His voice adds another dimension to the information. This inspires and clarifies. Read it!
