Powell's Staff: Books to Fill the TV-Shaped Hole in Your Heart (0 comment)
This last week, we had to say goodbye to TV shows about a complicated, rich family; a murdery, wannabe actor; an enthusiastically kind football coach and his team; and a would-be stand-up comedian in 1950s New York. We already miss them...

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments

First published in 1971, Rules for Radicals is Saul Alinsky's impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” Written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Review

“I consider him to be one of the few really great men of our century.” — Jacques Maritain

Review

“He cannot be bought; he cannot be intimidated; and he breaks all the rules.” — The Economist (London)

Review

“Alinsky is that rarity in American life, a superlative organizer, strategist, and tactician who is also a social philosopher.” — Charles E. Silberman

Synopsis

"This country's leading hell-raiser (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know "the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one."

First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

About the Author

Saul Alinsky was born in Chicago in 1909 and educated first in the streets of that city and then in its university. Graduate work at the University of Chicago in criminology introduced him to the Capone gang, and later to Joliet State Prison, where he studied prison life.

He founded what is known today as the Alinsky ideology and Alinsky concepts of mass organization for power. His work in organizing the poor to fight for their rights as citizens has been internationally recognized. In the late 1930s he organized the Back of the Yards area in Chicago (the neighborhood made famous in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle). Subsequently, through the Industrial Areas Foundation which he began in 1940, Mr. Alinsky and his staff helped to organize communities not only in Chicago but throughout the country. He later turned his attentions to the middle class, creating a training institute for organizers. He died in 1972.

This book greatly challenged me as a relatively novice community organizer. Alinsky packs the book with good, solid advice, and it is clearly the result of many years of organizing experience. I must admit, there were some ideas I had trouble with at first. Two examples of this are: the concept of taking a system for what it is and working from there, rather operating as if a system were already what you wished it were; and the idea that one cannot judge an activist/group's means to an end, unless a person lives in that cultural and historic context - i.e. that ethics are relative. As a very idealistic person, I initially found both of these ideas difficult to accept. But the book gave me excellent food for thought. Alinsky may have idealistic visions for society, but what truly sets him apart from other armchair liberals is his ability to balance these ideals with very pragmatic methods. It's hard to argue with the amount of authority and experience he has on the subject, and I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn the art/science of realistically creating social change.

I give this work a high rating as it is essential to know the tactics of those working to overturn the Constitution and replace it with a Communist regime. Knowing the enemy is the key to defeating same, thus I recommend this book to all who hold liberty and not tyranny in high regard.
