cozy reader

I found this book as an adult, but I wish I'd read it as a kid, although that would have been chronologically impossible. An orphaned girl, working in a cotton mill in England slips through a gate in the wall one day and finds a life she never knew was there - in sharp contrast to the grime, noise, abuse, and hard labor of her life, here is a peaceful canal, with horses pulling barges that have tiny, beautifully decorated, and painstakingly clean cabins, and people who, although reserved and private, have a strong sense of community. I won't tell you any more, just read it - it will make your heart melt open and leave you feeling very cozy. Books that have this same effect for me: Diddakoi by Rumer Godden and The Peppermint Pig by Nina Bawdin. P.S. The writer is from Portland!
