Bry H.: Books to Read for Orange Shirt Day (0 comment)
Like Indigenous and Native American storytelling, children’s books have the power to paint a picture for children, shared though reading aloud, the lives, values, stories, and cultures of different people. It’s important to remember the past, especially as we move further away from it, even when that history is painful. Starting in the late 1800s...

A New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book of 2011!

A picture-book delight by a rising talent tells a cumulative tale with a mischievous twist.

The bear's hat is gone, and he wants it back. Patiently and politely, he asks the animals he comes across, one by one, whether they have seen it. Each animal says no, some more elaborately than others. But just as the bear begins to despond, a deer comes by and asks a simple question that sparks the bear's memory and renews his search with a vengeance. Told completely in dialogue, this delicious take on the classic repetitive tale plays out in sly illustrations laced with visual humor — and winks at the reader with a wry irreverence that will have kids of all ages thrilled to be in on the joke.

Review

"I Want My Hat Back is a marvelous book in the true dictionary sense of marvel: It is a wonderful and astonishing thing, the kind of book that makes child laugh and adult chuckle, and both smile in appreciation." The New York Times

Review

"The joy of this book lies in figuring out the explicit plot from the implicit details in the pictures, especially a few wordless ones." Chicago Tribune

When I got to the ending, I couldn't believe that I had read what I just read. Wait, what? At first I didn't even understand what had happened, and then when I realized the full scope of it, I was shocked. I'm curious about how parents would explain the ending to their kids should the question come about-and that being said, this book is definitely not for young children-or animal lovers at that. I'm sure that adults find the ending hilarious and I guess in a way it was kind of funny-Definitely unexpected! I'm still shaking my head over this book, but if you look at it lightheartedly, it is a cute story.

Excellent repetition of phrases as the bear looks for his hat. Tests visual awareness of youngsters and teaches a lesson about lying and also ambiguity. Fun.

Like children's TV, one of my gold standards for a really brilliant kid's book is that it has to work for adults and kids at the same time. And not just because I'm going to read it 20 times a day for the next six years, but because it means that he'll enjoy it for longer as he grows and develops. I love this kid's book and so does my 18 month old! It is funny, dry, and a little bit dark. It works particularly well with silly voices. And the art is fun. Highly recommended! (although I would say in general that it probably would be even better for a slightly older kid.)

Very few picture books wed words and visuals as brilliantly and hilariously as I Want My Hat Back. As the main character goes through several emotions as he attempts to track down his treasured property, the dialogue is cleverly color-coded to match the various characters, and the deceptively simple illustrations convey emotion and expression vividly and descriptively to delight readers of all ages. The resolution of the story implies a potentially drastic action, but the overall impact of this fun and clever book is delightful.

There are only a few books that I truly enjoy reading to my kid at night and this is one of them. We both love the pictures and it's just a simple, beautifully illustrated book that I've been known to leaf through when she's not around. It's just great.

My sons and I love this book! My oldest (4) had it memorized after one reading and loves to read it to his brother. I love how much is said without words, beautiful illustrations.

Such a fun and clever book that will entertain the adults as well as the kids! I bought it for my boys (totally charmed by a chance reading in the store) and it was an instant hit. The boys love taking turns reading the characters' dialog and always scream with delight at the ending. This will be a kid's classic and it is truely beloved in our house.

Here's that giggle and grin opportunity that you long for when sharing a picture book with a child. There is something so delicious about the tradition of answer seeking in the hands of a master. And Jon Klassen is that: a master of just enough-words and illustrations to waken the giggles and have you grinning for a long, long read-it-again time.

I am SO looking forward to this book! I have been selling kids books for years and this has to be one of my very favorites!! It has everything a fantastic picture book should have--beautiful art work, brilliant design, and a clever sense of humor that kids and their big people will love!
