A 2004 Caldecott Honor Book

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments

When a bus driver takes a break from his route, a very unlikely volunteer springs up to take his place — a pigeon! But you've never met one like this before. As he pleads, wheedles, and begs his way through the book, children will love being able to answer back and decide his fate. In his hilarious picture book debut, popular cartoonist Mo Willems perfectly captures a preschooler's temper tantrum.

Review

"Readers will likely find satisfaction in this whimsical show of emotions and, perhaps, a bit of self-recognition." Publishers Weekly

Review

"Willems has captured the essence of unreasonableness in the very young. The genius of this book is that the very young will actually recognize themselves in it." School Library Journal

Review

"A first picture book by an Emmy Award-winning writer and animator, listeners will be begging, pleading, lying, and bribing to hear it again and again." Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Mo Willems is a three-time Caldecott Honor-winning Dinosaur (for Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Knuffle Bunny, and Knuffle Bunny Too). He also won two Geisel Medals for There Is a Bird on Your Head! and Are You Ready to Play Outside?, and a Geisel Honor for We Are in a Book! His books are perennial New York Times bestsellers, including Knuffle Bunny Free and Hooray for Amanda & Her Alligator! Before he turned to making picture books, Mo was a writer and animator on Sesame Street, where he won six Emmys. Mo lives happily ever after with his family in Massachusetts.

The main attraction of this book is its simplicity and wry insight into the obstinate behaviour common to children and adults alike. As children become familiar with the book, it can generate some very excited comments which can only add to its enjoyment. The perfect book to develop interaction with the written word from a very early age. Excellent.

Mo Willems' pigeon has won the hearts of my students since it was released. They can't seem to get enough of it. At least once per week some child asks me to choose it for their read aloud selection. Any book that makes my students happy, makes me happy. That's why it is my favorite book of the last decade.

This is not a good book - this is a GREAT book. I bought it for a friends granddaughter - she has fallen in love with it. The drawings and pictures are fantastic and the story will grab and keep the attention of children of different ages. The ones too young to read it themselves - love the pictures and want someone to read to them. The ones who can read it - love it. Would make a wonderful holiday gift. Will help instill a love of books in children. One of the best children's book of the last ten years. Well deserving of The Caldecot Honor.

My preschool students love this book so much, they memorize the words so they can "read" it to themselves. It is always funny no matter how many million times I've read it to them.

My son asks for this book again and again. Mo Willems puts so much expression into his illustrations that kids can tell what the pigeon is thinking/feeling/saying even if they can't read yet. It's worth reading just for the page of bribery and begging.

I can't believe there aren't 100 responses to this book. This is the new classic for 21st Century kids. Funny for kids and adults. You won't hide this under the bed to avoid having to read it again. Although kids will ask for it every time, it's short enough and funy enough not to wear out your bedtime story patience. Good for two - five years. Highly recommend any Mo Willems book! Great for showers and other kid gifting.
