Janice P. Nimura: Stand in the Place Where They Were (0 comment)
I’ve always loved historic house museums, loved peering beyond the velvet rope into a Victorian bedroom or a colonial kitchen and imagining the ghosts that wore those dresses, or worked the handle of that butter churn, or laid the fire in that grate...

Publisher Comments

The seventy-fifth anniversary edition of the classic book about Cape Cod, “written with simplicity, sympathy, and beauty” (New York Herald Tribune)

A chronicle of a solitary year spent on a Cape Cod beach, The Outermost House has long been recognized as a classic of American nature writing. Henry Beston had originally planned to spend just two weeks in his seaside home, but was so possessed by the mysterious beauty of his surroundings that he found he “could not go.”

Instead, he sat down to try and capture in words the wonders of the magical landscape he found himself in thrall to: the migrations of seabirds, the rhythms of the tide, the windblown dunes, and the scatter of stars in the changing summer sky. Beston argued that, “The world today is sick to its thin blood for the lack of elemental things, for fire before the hands, for water, for air, for the dear earth itself underfoot.” Seventy-five years after they were first published, Bestons words are more true than ever.

A Naturalist , January 01, 2013 (view all comments by A Naturalist)
The book was written by Henry Beston (1988-1968, a naturalist/writer) in 1928. It describes the natural history of a portion of the Cape Cod beach, plus his relationship with the Coast Guardsman who routinely patrolled on foot. While the beach house he lived in and lovingly described was subsequently destroyed, it lives on through recognition of the writer and the house by various organizations.

Beston is a wonderful observer of things natural, which in turn he describes beautifully in words. I'd recommend this book, written in the 1920s, highly.
