Melody is a funny and amazingly intelligent nonverbal 11-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. She struggles to fit in with her verbal peers at school, and begins to feel fed up with it. With the help of her family, a speech therapist, and a family friend, she receives assistive technology to help her communicate. This is an amazing read for anyone of any age. Melody's story asserts the notion that one should always assume competence with our nonverbal peers, or those who communicate differently. Recommended By Rin S., Powells.com

Publisher Comments

Melody has a photographic memory. She remembers everything that has ever happened to her in precise, exact detail — from the words to a song she once heard when she was little to what she ate for a typical mundane breakfast. She also knows thousands and thousands of facts. Her head is like a video camera that is always recording. Always — and there’s no delete button. She’s the smartest kid in her whole school — but, NO ONE knows because she has virtually no way of communicating. Melody has cerebral palsy. All most people see is a special needs kid — never suspecting that trapped inside this eleven-year old girl is more information and insight than they ever imagined.

Being stuck inside her head is making Melody go out of her mind — that is until she discovers a computerized talking device that will allow her communicate for the first time ever. A dream come true! At last, she's able to talk, to be in a regular classroom, and have regular conversations! Melody even joins the Whiz Kids Quiz Team — and becomes one of their most valuable members. She’s showing everyone what she is really capable of and surprising even herself with the power of her computerized voice. But, what if people — teachers, classmates, friends — don’t want Melody to succeed? And what if Melody’s new voice isn’t loud enough to be heard over all her difficulties?

From multiple Coretta Scott King Award winner Sharon Draper comes a story full of heartache and hope. Melody is learning to communicate with the world... and teaching the world how to communicate with her. If you are brave enough, strong enough, if you can bear to listen, hers is a story you need to hear.

"If there is one book teens and parents (and everyone else) should read this year, Out of My Mind should be it" (Denver Post).
Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom--the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged, because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy. And she's determined to let everyone know it...somehow.
In this breakthrough story--reminiscent of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly--from multiple Coretta Scott King Award-winner Sharon Draper, readers will come to know a brilliant mind and a brave spirit who will change forever how they look at anyone with a disability.

Out of My Mind is a coming of age story and a family story. Melody, a scary smart tween who can't talk because she has cerebral palsy, wants more than anything to have friends. She would even be happy if her classmates, and her teachers, would just talk to her like she was a normal kid. I appreciated that author, Sharon Draper, did not want readers to feel pity for Melody. Draper created a character who, like most tweens, is sometimes hard to like. Melody can be demanding, whiney and uncooperative. Most people assume her brain is as damaged as her body. Her teachers ignore her, and her classmates make fun of her. When she is not overwhelmed with frustration, Melody is funny, sensitive, and kind. Her life changes when she gets a computer similar to Stephan Hawking's computer. For the first time, she can talk, and she blows everyone away with how smart she is. Draper keeps the story realistic. Melody's life does not suddenly turn around and become all good. But Melody is empowered, and she is determined to stay on a path to success and a normal life.

A great middle grade read featuring Melody, a bright, sensitive girl with cerebral palsy. Draper does a great job showing Melody's strength, but also her frustration as she deals with her physical and communication limitations.

In _Out of My Mind_, Sharon M. Draper offers an important addition to the canon of books that explore the issues surrounding disability. Her protagonist, Melody, is a 10-year-old girl with a photographic memory, an impressive vocabulary, a keen mind...and no way to show it. Misjudged and misunderstood more often than not, Melody struggles to express herself, to reveal herself, and to protect herself from repeated underestimation from peers and adults alike. But even the ability to communicate and participate doesn't entirely save Melody from disappointments and betrayals; and in the end, her biggest victory comes not from the technology that helps her communicate, but from her own strong and forgiving heart.

Avid Angler, age 10, writes the following about "Out of My Mind". This story is about a girl with cerebral palsy and she's trying to speak. She is 11 years old and she has not even spoken a word. Her name is Melody. She learns how to speak with a medi-talker. After she learns how to speak, she signs up for the school whiz kids team. She is one of the smartest kids on her team. I learned from this book that someone disabled can be very smart. This story is very long. There are basically three stories in one. My 8 year old sister really liked this story.

This is a great book about a girl named Melody who has cerebral palsy, where she can't walk, talk, or write. Melody is super smart though, she just has no way of showing it. She has to figure out a way to show her smarts and never give up. Even though Melody is different from most people, she doesn't let that stop her.

What an extraordinary book! The book is written from the perspective of an 11 year old girl who has never spoken. She has cerebral palsy which prevents her from communicating in the usual way, but she is extremely bright. With the backing of her parents, her caregiver, and an aide at school, she is encouraged to use her mind and continue to grow mentally. After being included in "inclusion" classes, she experiences the highs and lows that we all encounter in life. I could hardly put it down.

Moving and Insightful. This book will help you see differently abled children and adults with new eyes. Melody is a brilliant 11 year old girl with a photographic memory. She remembers everything she reads, hears, or sees. She is probably the smartest student in her school. Only problem is, no one knows this except her. Melody was diagnosed with cerebral palsy by doctors who don't believe she is capable of learning. She is confined to a wheelchair and cannot walk, speak, or do anything for herself. At school she spends her day in a classroom with other special needs children and teachers who recite the alphabet to her daily and have no clue what is going on inside her head. Stuck inside her head, Melody is literally "going out of her mind", not being able to communicate her needs or tell people to stop all the "baby" lessons. In 5th grade she begins attending a regular classroom for one period a day where she longs to join in the conversations and shout out all the answers to the teacher's questions.....all of which she knows. With the help of her supportive parents and a neighbor/caregiver, she is able to get a computerized talking device that allows her to speak for the first time. Melody doesn't hold back and some people are not prepared to hear what she has to say.

This book shows that even if a person can't speak or even walk, that doesn't mean that they aren't smart (no matter what the person looks like). It is just they can't express themselves. This is an amazing book. It is a must read for everyone. It helps everybody understand people with disabilities. I love the way you can't predict any of it. I want everybody I know to read it.
