Architect Daniel Libeskind, known for his dynamic, fractured compositions, is also recognized for introducing a new critical discourse to architecture. In an enormous variety of projects around the world—major cultural institutions, convention centers, universities, hotels, commercial centers, and residential work—he has manifested his commitment to expanding the horizons of architecture and urbanism. Counterpoint: Daniel Libeskind is the first comprehensive portrait of the work of Studio Daniel Libeskind, which was established in Berlin in 1989 and moved to New York in 2003 after winning the World Trade Center design competition.

Drawn from a series of interviews with celebrated architecture critic Paul Goldberger, Counterpoint exemplifies Libeskind's multidisciplinary approach, which reflects a profound interest in philosophy, art, music, literature, theater, and film. Along with Memory Foundations, the master plan for the World Trade Center site, featured projects include the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Royal Ontario Museum, the extension to the Denver Art Museum, the MGM Mirage CityCenter in Las Vegas, a multi-building complex in Busan, South Korea, and projects in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Israel, Mexico, Japan, and China.

Worst Frisbee ever. I tried to throw this book towards the garbage can and it landed in the gutter. Useless book. No good for anything, not even Frisbee toy.

As this book shows, Daniel Libeskind embodies all the worst aspects of the greedy last decade. Libeskind's ego and his condescension towards other architects is well known despite the fact that there is almost no merit to his constant claims to superiority. His work owes more to speed and greed - (most of the designs look like someone detailed the first thing that came into Libeskind's head.) But like Wall Street's excesses, Libeskind now more obviously looks so much like the hack he always was. Counterpoint demonstrates that lack of substance in Libeskind's thinking and in his work. Short snippets of conversation with Paul Goldberger fizzle out as there really isn't much to say about any these projects, apart from the fact that they all look like very little thought went into them. By way of process, the book has some of Libeskind's crude doodles and copious amounts of computer renderings that look like they were outsourced to some production house in the Far East where some kid was charged with interpreting Libeskind's rough marks. It is a far cry from the informed and characterful study drawings of Aalto, Kahn, Wright or just about any other of the architects Libeskind so readily dismisses. Equally, his work is a far cry from design.

Burn BEFORE Reading!! Being famous and being a good architect have no correllation. If you are a budding architect you do not want to be influenced by this pseudo-theoretical muck. The ideas in this book are so lame that I did not know whether to laugh or cry. I only read this because I feel obliged to read any Christmas gift my family spends money on. It will be used to light our holiday fire next year!!

Slick glossy pictures. Shallow commentary. Superficial design methodology. Empty rhetoric. Plenty of self-love and meaningless jargon from Libeskind. Very forgettable.

Libeskind adoringly flatters himself as though he were the greatest architect ever. (He's not!) Goldberger looks on and absorbs it uncritically. I wasted my money. Don't waste yours.

Apart from the glittery cover, there isn't anything here you could not get for free on Libeskind's own web-site or from his PR Agent. The "conversations" are in a very short section up front, but mostly it's Libeskind who does all of the talking. So the book is an uncritical review, by Libeskind, of his own work. There's a lot of pictures of un-built projects. More a catalog than a monograph. I was very dissapointed considering the price. - Not recommended.
